Abstract:Let $$\sigma =\{\sigma _i |i\in I\}$$ be some partition of all primes $${\mathbb {P}}$$ and G a finite group. A subgroup H of G is said to be $$\sigma $$ -subnormal in G if there exists a subgroup chain $$H=H_0\le H_1\le \cdots \le H_n=G$$ such that either $$H_{i-1}$$ is normal in $$H_i$$ or $$H_i/(H_{i-1})_{H_i}$$ is a finite $$\sigma _j$$ -group for some $$j \in I$$ for $$i = 1, \ldots , n$$ . We call a finite group G a $$T_{\sigma }$$ -group if every $$\sigma $$ -subnormal subgroup is normal in G. In this paper, we analyse the structure of the $$T_{\sigma }$$ -groups and give some characterisations of the $$T_{\sigma }$$ -groups.

Abstract:This is one of a series of papers which aims towards a classification of imprimitive affine groups of rank $3$. In this paper, a complete classification is given of such groups of characteristic $p$ such that the point stabilizer is not $p$-local, which shows that such groups are very rare, namely, the two non-isomorphic groups of the form $2^4{:}\mathrm{GL}_3(2)$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup are the only examples.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, and let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a formation of finite groups. We say that a subgroup H of G is $\mathfrak{F}_h $-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that HT is a normal Hall subgroup of G and (H ∩ T)H G /H G is contained in the $\mathfrak{F}$-hypercenter $Z_\infty ^\mathfrak{F} $ (G/H G ) of G/H G . In this paper, we obtain some results about the $\mathfrak{F}_h $-normal subgroups and then use them to study the structure of finite groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, and let F be a formation of finite groups. We say that a subgroup H of G is F-h-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that HT is a normal Hall subgroup of G and (H boolean AND T) H-G/H-G is contained in the F-hypercenter Z(infinity)(F) (G/H-G) of G/H-G. In this paper, we obtain some results about the F-h-normal subgroups and then use them to study the structure of finite groups.

Abstract:We prove an accessibility theorem for finite-index splittings of groups. Given a finitely presented group G there is a number n(G) such that, for every reduced locally finite G-tree T with finitely generated stabilizers, T/G has at most n(G) vertices and edges. We also show that deformation spaces of locally finite trees (with finitely generated stabilizers) are maximal in the partial ordering of domination of G-trees.

Abstract:In this paper we first state a conjecture on the lower bound of the maximal height of characters in a p-block of a finite group. Then we show that our conjecture holds for all blocks of covering groups of a sporadic simple group, for all blocks of a quasi-simple group G with G/Z(G) isomorphic to A6,A7 or a simple group of Lie type with an exceptional covering group, for all blocks of a symmetric group, as well as for all blocks of finite general linear or unitary groups. For the proof of the case with symmetric groups, it relates to an open question of Olsson on the existence of t-core partitions, where t≥3 is an integer. As a byproduct, our investigation on heights of characters of the symmetric groups and of the general linear or unitary groups also gives evidence for the Isaacs-Moretó-Navarro-Tiep Conjecture, claiming that the number of distinct irreducible character degrees of a Sylow p-subgroup P of an arbitrary finite group G is at most one more than the number of irreducible character degrees of G that are multiples of p.

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

In this paper, we obtain some results about the J(h)-normal subgroups and use them to study the structure of finite groups. Some new characterizations of supersoluble groups, soluble groups and p-nilpotent groups are obtained and some known results are generalized.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group. A proper subgroup $H$ of $G$ is said to be large if the order of $H$ satisfies the bound $|H|^3 \ge |G|$. In this note we determine all the large maximal subgroups of finite simple groups, and we establish an analogous result for simple algebraic groups (in this context, largeness is defined in terms of dimension). An application to triple factorisations of simple groups (both finite and algebraic) is discussed.

A subgroup A of a finite group G is said to be: (i) sigma-subnormal in G if there is a subgroup chain A = A (0) <= A (1) <= center dot center dot center dot <= A (n) = G such that either A( i - 1) (sic) A (i) or A( i) / ( A( i - 1 )) A (i) is a sigma( j)-group, j = j( i), for all i = 1 , ... , n; (ii) modular in G if the following conditions are held: (1) < X, A boolean AND Z) = < X, A >boolean AND Z for all X <= G, Z <= G such that X <= Z, and (2) < A, Y boolean AND Z > = < A, Y >boolean AND Z for all Y <= G, Z <= G such that A <= Z; (iii) sigma-quasinormal in G if A is sigma-subnormal and modular in G.
