Abstract:Let $\X$ be a class of finite groups closed under taking the subgroups, homomorphic images and extensions. By $\D_\X$ denote the class of finite groups $G$ in which every two $\X$-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate. In the paper, the following statement is proven. Let $A$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$. Then \centerline{$G\in\D_\X$ if and only if $A\in \D_\X$ and $G/A\in \D_\X$.} This statement implies that the $\X$-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate if and only if the so called $\X$-sub\-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate. Thus we obtain an affirmative solution to a problem posed by H.Wielandt in 1964.

Abstract:We distinguish 2-maximal and strictly 2-maximal subgroups of a finite group and give examples of soluble and simple groups in which every 2-maximal subgroup is strictly 2-maximal. Let M be a maximal subgroup of a group G. We prove that every maximal subgroup of M is strictly 2-maximal in G if M is normal in G or if G is p-soluble and |G:M|=p. We describe the structure of a finite group in which all 2-maximal subgroups are Hall subgroups. In particular, it has a Sylow tower and all its Sylow subgroups are elementary abelian.

Abstract:In 1962, V.A. Belonogov proved that if a finite group $G$ contains two maximal subgroups of coprime orders, then either $G$ is one of known solvable groups or $G$ is simple. In this short note based on results by M. Liebeck and J. Saxl on odd order maximal subgroups in finite simple groups we determine possibilities for triples $(G,H,M)$, where $G$ is a finite nonabelian simple group, $H$ and $M$ are maximal subgroups of $G$ with $(|H|,|M|)=1$.

Abstract:Let 𝔛 be a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Following H. Wielandt, we call a subgroup H of a finite group G a submaximal 𝔛-subgroup if there exists an isomorpic embedding ϕ: G ↪ G* of the group G into some finite group G* under which Gϕ is subnormal in G* and Hϕ = K ∩Gϕ for some maximal 𝔛-subgroup K of G*. We discuss the following question formulated by Wielandt: Is it always the case that all submaximal 𝔛-subgroups are conjugate in a finite group G in which all maximal 𝔛-subgroups are conjugate? This question strengthens Wielandt’s known problem of closedness for the class of Open image in new window -groups under extensions, which was solved some time ago. We prove that it is sufficient to answer the question mentioned for the case where G is a simple group.

Abstract:Given a finite group G, two elements are ≡ m -related if they lie in exactly the same maximal subgroups of G. This equivalence relation was introduced by P. J. Cameron, A. Lucchini and C. M. Roney-Dougal to understand better the generated set for finite groups. We study the relation ≡ m in a conjugacy class of G and determine sufficient conditions to ensure that such conjugacy class is contained in the Fitting subgroup F(G) of G. If G is soluble and x, y are two ≡ m -related elements of G such that (|xG |, |yG |) = 1, we prove that they lie in F(G).

Abstract:Let 𝔛 be a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Following H. Wielandt, we call a subgroup H of a finite group G a submaximal 𝔛- subgroup if there exists an isomorphic embedding ϕ : G ↪ G * of G into some finite group G * under which G ϕ is subnormal in G * and H ϕ = K ∩ G ϕ for some maximal 𝔛- subgroup K of G * . In the case where 𝔛 coincides with the class of all π-groups for some set π of prime numbers, submaximal 𝔛- subgroups are called submaximal π-subgroups . In his talk at the well-known conference on finite groups in Santa Cruz in 1979, Wielandt emphasized the importance of studying submaximal π-subgroups , listed (without proof) certain of their properties, and formulated a number of open questions regarding these subgroups. Here we prove properties of maximal and submaximal 𝔛- and π - subgroups and discuss some open questions both Wielandt’s and new ones. One of such questions due to Wielandt reads as follows: Is it always the case that all submaximal 𝔛- subgroups are conjugate in a finite group G in which all maximal 𝔛- subgroups are conjugate?

Abstract:Let F be a class of groups. A chief factor H/K of a group G is called F-central in G provided (H/K)⋊(G/CG(H/K))∈F. We write ZπF(G) to denote the product of all normal subgroups of G whose G-chief factors of order divisible by at least one prime in π are F-central. We call ZπF(G) the πF-hypercentre of G. A subgroup U of a group G is called F-maximal in G provided that (a) U∈F, and (b) if U⩽V⩽G and V∈F, then U=V. In this paper we study the properties of the intersection of all F-maximal subgroups of a finite group. In particular, we analyze the condition under which ZπF(G) coincides with the intersection of all F-maximal subgroups of G.

Wilson's recent results, we prove the existence of triples such that is a complete (i.e., closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions) class of finite groups, is a finite simple group, and is its -maximal subgroup nonpronormal in . This disproves a conjecture stated earlier by the second author and W. Guo.

A group [math] is said to be autocapable if there exists a group [math] such that [math] is isomorphic to the absolute central factor group [math] of [math]. In this paper, we first prove that if [math] is a characteristic subgroup of an autocapable group [math], then [math] is neither the generalized quaternion group nor the semi-dihedral group. Next, we give the classification of finite groups [math] if [math] is a 2-group of maximal class.

Abstract:It is shown by means of a generalization of a result of R. Baer and D. H. McLain that if G is a locally polycyclic group and if the chief factors of every finitely generated subgroup of G have finite rank at most equal to r, then every maximal subgroup of G has index dividing the r th power of some prime. This answers a question about locally supersoluble groups raised by the first author. In addition, examples are furnished to show that neither of the properties "all chief factors are finite" and "all maximal subgroups have finite index" implies the other.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and assume that a group of automorphisms A is acting on G such that A and G have coprime orders. We prove that the fact of imposing specific properties on the second maximal A -invariant subgroups of G determines that G is either soluble or isomorphic to a few non-soluble groups such as PSL(2, 5) or SL(2, 5).
