Abstract:Novel Zr-modified nano-CaO sorbents with cage-like hollow sphere structure were prepared for increasing the durability of CO2 sorption via an ion precipitation method using carbon spheres as a template. A thorough study on the influence of the Ca/Zr molar ratio and the effect of cage-like structure on the CO2 sorption durability of the prepared sorbents was performed using thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that the optimum Ca/Zr molar ratio of 5 maintained the most favorable CO2 sorption stability, which maintained a CaO conversion of 76% after 30 cycles, whereas the CaO conversion of a nano-CaO cage-like hollow sphere sorbent without Zr-modification decayed to 20%. The combination of the Zr-modification and the cage-like structure demonstrates a synergistic effect in enhancing the CaO conversion and sorption stability due to the formation of CaZrO3 with a cage like porous structure, which facilitated CO2 diffusion and minimized thermal sintering. Furthermore, a detailed comparison was made among the Zr-, Mg- and Al-stabilizers. It was found that the Zr-stabilized sorbents exhibited better durability than that of Al- and Mg-stabilized sorbents due to the formation of CaZrO3 with a high Tammann temperature (T-T).

Abstract:Calcium looping (CaL) belongs to a promising high-temperature CO2 capture technology because of adopting cheap and extensive source CaO-based sorbents. However, CaO-based sorbents are prone to occur the issues of sintering and elutriation in the fluidized-bed reactors. To further enhance the practicability, the Zr-supported, CaO-based sorbent pellets were produced using the graphite-moulding method. Different synthesis modes (i.e., sol-gel, hydration-mixing, and wet-mixing) were compared for preparing CaO-based composite slurry before pelletization. Sol-gel is the promising synthesis mode to prepare Zr-supported, CaO-based pellets with outstanding CO2 capture performance due to achieving a more uniform distribution of inert CaZrO3 spacer. Moreover, the Zr-based stabilizer content within sorbent pellets produced by the combined method of sol-gel and graphite-moulding was further studied. The higher content of Zr-based stabilizer promotes the enhancement of cyclic stability and mechanical strength of Zr-supported, CaO-based pellets. After 17 cycles, the sorbent pellets containing 20 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer display a high CaO carbonation conversion of 74.1 %. Moreover, CaO-based pellets with 20 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer possess a higher compression strength of 4.84 ± 1.08 MPa, which is as high as 1.8 times that of the pellets with 5 wt% of Zr-based stabilizer.

Abstract:To decrease the sintering deterioration of CaO sorbents in multiple CO2 capture and release cycles, we synthesized a series of stabilized CaO sorbents incorporated with silica through freeze-drying and heat-drying, the latter of which was referred to as benchmark. The ratio of Ca and Si precursors was varied to control the reactive loadings of CaO (from 70 to 100 wt %) and the fraction of spacers in the sorbents. The characterization results show that the freeze-drying method produces sorbents with higher specific area and larger pore volume than the heat-drying method. Moreover, the stability test of over 30 cycles demonstrated that the freeze-dried samples exhibited better performance with higher stability and total CO2 uptake. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image shows that Ca2SiO4 crystallites as spacers are distributed within the matrix of CaO crystallites. Abstract:One of the post-combustion CO2 capture technologies that have sufficiently been proved to be the best candidates for practical large scale post-combustion application is the calcium looping cycle. However, the CO2 capture capacity of a calcium based sorbent derived from natural limestone decays through long-term cyclic utilization; thus, the development of novel sorbents to achieve a high CO2 capture capacity is an critical challenge for the calcium looping cycle technology. In this paper, we report the preparation and character of a new calcium based sorbent produced via the combustion of a dry gel. The results show that the novel calcium-based sorbent has a much higher residual carbonation conversion as well as a better performance of anti-sintering when compared with the calcium based sorbent derived from commercial micrometer grade CaCO3 and manometer grade CaCO3. It is reasonable to propose that the different final carbonation performances are induced by their different pore structures and BET surface areas rather than by different particle sizes. Compared with the commercial nano CaO, the morphology of the new sorbent shows a more rough porous appearance with hollow nanostructure. During carbonation, CO2 diffused more easily through the hollow structure than through a solid structure to reach the unreacted CaO. Besides, there is less chance for the hollow nanostructured particles to be merged together during the high temperature reactions.

Abstract:Regeneratable CaO-based sorbents for CO2 capture during coal combustion process are receiving more and more attention.Unfortunately,the CO2 sorbtion capacity of CaO-sorbents based on natural limestone decreases rapidly with times of capture-and-release cycle because of severe sintering.This sintering can be effectively mitigated by properly doping metal oxides.In this paper an attempt was done to prepare a class of synthetic CaO/La2O3 and CaO/MgO sorbents by sol-gel method.The CO2 sorption capacity of these doped CaO-based sorbents in multi-cycles and the effect of additive La3+ or Mg2+ were investigated in a fixed bed reactor.The results show that additive of La2O3 or MgO plays a positive role in the multiple capture/regeneration reactions.Based on XRD analysis,it is concluded that addition of La3+ or Mg2+ can significantly reduced the crystalline size of CaO.Furthermore,it is also showed from FSEM images analysis that the CaO-based sorbents doped La3+ also have certain degree sintering.However,the La3+ can get into CaO crystal,resulting in activation of CaO lattice and increase of cation vacancy,which can plays a positive role in the process of capturing CO2,thereby greatly improve the reactivity of these sorbents.

Abstract:The sintering deactivation of CaO sorbents limits the commercialization and application of calcium looping. Improving resistance to sintering and the synergy with cement manufacture are two effective paths to reduce the cost of this CO2 capture technology. In this work, a series of Ca-based sorbents stabilized with six kinds of spacers was prepared by freeze drying. The multicycle CO2 capture tests under the severe conditions (carbonation in 15 vol % CO2 at 650 degrees C for 10 min and calcination in 15 vol % CO2 at 900 degrees C with no dwell time) indicated that the sorbents stabilized with Y2O3, CaZrO3, and MgO showed superior sintering-resistant ability. The stabilization mechanism was explored via material characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy. The sorbent stabilized with CaZrO3 was chosen to incorporate into the cement raw meals to prepare the cement clinker samples. It was found that the moderate introduction of CaZrO3 had little impact on the 3CaO center dot SiO2 (tricalcium silicate, providing the early compressive strength of cement) generation in the cement clinkers, which first proved the feasibility of preparing the qualified cements by use of calcium sorbents stabilized with the specific spacer.

Abstract:The calcium looping cycles method has been identified as an attractive method for CO2 capture during coal combustion and gasification processes. However, it is well-known that the capture capacity of CaO undergoes a rapid decrease after mutiple cycles. In order to improve the stability of CO2 capture capacity in CaO, this paper focuses on the development and performance of the synthetic CaO/La2O3 sorbents for calcium looping cycles. The sorbents were synthesized by three different methods: dry physical mixing, wet chemistry, and sol-gel combustion synthesis (SGCS). Their multicyclic CO2 capture capacity and the effect of the additive La2O3 were investigated in a fixed bed reactor system. The results indicate that the additive of La2O3 plays a positive role in the carbonation/calcination reactions, and the SGCS-made synthetic sorbent is composed of ultrafine well-dispersed hollow structured particles which are beneficial to the gas-phase diffusion on the surface area and can prevent small CaO particles from agglomeration effectively. As a result, the novel synthetic sorbent with the molar ratio of Ca to La of 10:1 made by the SGCS method provides the best performance of a carbonation conversion of 72% under mild calcination conditions and a carbonation conversion of 36% under severe calcination conditions (high temperature and high CO2 concentration) after 20 cycles.

Abstract:ZnO was doped into nano-CaO adsorbents to increase the sorption durability in the calcium looping (CaL) process. The preparation of a nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was studied in detail by varying the ZnO additive amounts and thermal pretreatment conditions. Also, the performance of the nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was evaluated under different CaL operation conditions. The results showed that the carbonation conversion of CaO in the adsorbent was stably kept as 57.4% after 15 cycles when the optimum values of the molar ratio of CaO to ZnO was 8, thermal pretreatment temperature and time were 850 °C and 1 h, respectively, and the carbonation and regeneration temperatures were 700 and 750 °C, respectively. The anti-sintering performance of ZnO was close to that of ZrO2 and TiO2 and better than that of MgO and Al2O3. The reason for the high durability of the nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was that low thermal expansibility dopant ZnO, could promote the recurrence of nano-CaO grains, leading to self-reactivation in the CaL process.

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO) is considered a promising candidate for CO2 capture owing to its high theoretical capacity, low price, and high working temperature. However, one key issue associated with CaO is its low cyclic stability during long-term CO2 capture cycles due to particle agglomeration. Here, we introduced low-cost MgAl2O4, Y3+-MgAl2O4 spinels, and La3+-MgAl2O4 spinels into CaO as structural supports to enhance its CO2 capture stability. XPS and EPR analyses show that there were more structure defects in Y3+-MgAl2O4 and La3+-MgAl2O4, which could improve the initial kinetics. The spinels and ion-doped spinels were found to significantly improve the CO2 capture performances, including both capture stability and carbonation kinetics, providing a new strategy for the development of CaO-based materials. CaO@La3+-MgAl2O4 sorbents had the most enhanced CO2 capture stability, namely 0.50 g-CO2/g-sorbent after 10 cycles or a capacity retention of 75.8% (over 48.6% for pristine CaO), which resulted from the improved antisintering property. Moreover, the carbonation rate constants of each CO2 capture cycle, composed of an initial chemically controlled region and a further diffusion-controlled region, were analyzed by a gas-solid reaction model. This further demonstrated that the restrained material sintering via the introduction of spinels could enhance the reaction between CaO and CO(2 )in both regions.

Abstract:CaO-based adsorbents for carbon capture represent a promising technology for reducing carbon emission. In this study, we prepare metal oxide-doped multifarious CaO-based adsorbents using the hydration method. We investigate the effect of various working conditions, such as temperature and carbonation time, on different adsorbents in a fixed-bed reactor under multiple carbonation-calcination cycles. We examine the behavior of different metal oxides-doped synthetic adsorbents using density functional theory calculation based on experiments. The results prove that 5 wt% ZrO2-doped adsorbents show excellent CO2 adsorption efficiency, which reaches up to 38.4% after 20 carbonation-calcination cycles at 700 degrees C with 15 vol% CO2. The adsorbents doped with other metal oxides are also useful for CO2 capture to varying degrees. The adsorption energy of CO2 molecules on modifiequationed adsorbents is higher than that on pure CaO, especially for Zr, where the adsorption energy reached 2.37 eV. The calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Calcium-looping technology has been identified as one of the most favorable CO2 capture techniques for the implementation of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS); however, the rapid deactivation of CaO sorbents due to sintering is currently a major barrier of this technology. We report for the first time an environmentally benign and cost-effective strategy to reduce sintering by adding waste-derived nanosilica, synthesized from photovoltaic waste (SiCl4), into Cao-based sorbents through a simple dry mixing procedure. The as-synthesized sorbent (90% CaCO3-W) resulted in final CO2 uptake of 0.32 g(CO2) g(CaO)(-1) within 5 min of carbonation. Even under the most severe calcination conditions (at 920 degrees C in pure CO2), it still maintained a stable capture capacity, with CO2 uptake of 0.23 g(CO2) g(CaO)(-1) after 30 cycles. Additionally, the CO2 uptake percentage reached similar to 90% in the fast carbonation stage (similar to 20 s), which is of great significance for real applications. The most likely stabilization mechanism was considered on the basis of N-2 physisorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction patterns. It was concluded that stable and refractory larnite (Ca2SiO4) particles were formed during 2-h thermal pretreatment at 900 degrees C, leading to sintering resistance. This strategy significantly enhanced the cyclic stability and carbonation rate of CaO-based sorbents through the reuse of SiCl4 and is thus a green technology for scaled-up fast CO2 capture.
Durability of CaO-CaZrO3 Sorbents for High-Temperature CO2 Capture Prepared by a Wet Chemical Method

Abstract:Powders of CaO sorbent modified with CaZrO3 have been synthesized by a wet chemical route. For carbonation and calcination conditions relevant to sorbent-enhanced steam reforming applications, a powder of composition 10 wt % CaZrO3/90 wt % CaO showed an initial rise in CO2 uptake capacity in the first 10 carbonation-decarbonation cycles, increasing from 0.31 g of CO2/g of sorbent in cycle 1 to 0.37 g of CO2/g of sorbent in cycle 10 and stabilizing at this value for the remainder of the 30 cycles tested, with carbonation at 650 degrees C in 15% CO2 and calcination at 800 degrees C in air. Under more severe conditions of calcination at 950 degrees C in 100% CO2, following carbonation at 650 degrees C in 100% COD the best overall performance was for a sorbent with 30 wt % CaZrO3/70 wt % CaO (the highest Zr ratio studied), with an initial uptake of 0.36 g of CO2/g of sorbent, decreasing to 0.31 g of CO2/g of sorbent at the 30th cycle. Electron microscopy revealed that CaZrO3 was present in the form of <= 0.5 mu m cuboid and 20-80 nm particles dispersed within a porous matrix of CaO/CaCO3; the nanoparticles are considered to be the principal reason for promoting multicycle durability.

Abstract:In this work, a series of Ce-doped, Zr-doped and Zr-Ce co-doped CaO-based sorbents were prepared by the sol-gel method. The multi-cycle CO2 sorption performance test under mild conditions showed that the Zr-doped sorbents had better stability than the Ce-doped sorbents. This is because CaZrO3 had a higher Tammann temperature than CeO2, which could inhibit the growth and agglomeration of sorbent particles more effectively. However, compared with the Zr-doped sorbents, the Ce-doped sorbents had a higher CO2 sorption rate at cycle 1. This is because CeO2 has abundant oxygen vacancies to facilitate the mobility of O2−, thus promoting the carbonation reaction. It is worth noting that the Zr-Ce co-doped CaO-based sorbents combined the advantages of high Tammann temperature and oxygen vacancy of two inert materials, so it had a more balanced CO2 sorption performance. Since higher calcination temperature (950 °C) and CO2 concentration (90 vol.%) accelerated the sintering of the sorbents, the selected sorbents showed faster deactivation under severe conditions. SGZr10 exhibited excellent CO2 capture performance under both mild and severe conditions.

Abstract:Cyclic CO2 capture using CaO-based sorbents derived from commercial pure micro-sized CaCO3 and nano-sized CaCO3 was investigated, focusing on the different characteristics of carbonation conversions, carbonation rates, surface areas, pore volumes, morphological changes, and microstrains of two sorbents during high-temperature reactions. The results indicated that the CaO-based sorbent derived from nano-sized CaCO3 (NC-CaO) provided higher carbonation conversions and carbonation rates than the CaO-based sorbent derived from micro-sized CaCO3 (MC-CaO) in the cyclic CO2 capture reactions. Furthermore, NC-CaO retained its fast carbonation rate at the beginning of each cycle for several tens of seconds. In contrast, the carbonation rate of MC-CaO diminished with an increase in the cycle number. Unfortunately, NC-CaO sintered more easily. Its grains, which were composed of numerous spherical nanocrystallites, suffered from dramatic morphological changes during high-temperature reactions. A mechanism of grain boundary migration was employed to explain the sintering of CaO-based sorbent. The smaller crystallites were more susceptible to be merged by the bigger crystallites during high-temperature reactions.

Abstract:Calcium looping (CaL) has being considered a CO2 capture technology with great promise because of its wide suitability and low-cost. In this work, the Ca(OH)2 core was coated with porous alumina coverings via a dip-coating approach to produce CaO-based sorbent pellet with core-shell structure. The coating shell was prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly sol-gel strategy using P123 as the pore-forming agent with different acidic conditions (i.e., acid-alcohol ratio varied from 0.05 to 3). It reveals that the cyclic CO2 capture performance of core-shell structured CaO-based sorbent pellets decreases with the increase of acidity of sol-gel using for covering spherical cores. When coating gel with excessive acidity, the formation of dense alumina shell and the irreversible chlorination inactivation, which together lead to the low cyclic CO2 capture performance. Particularly, the CO2 capture capability of core-shell structured CaO-based sorbent pellets whose shell gel used for coating in low acid-alcohol ratio of 0.05 is as high as 1.4 times that of non-shell CaO-based pellets after 17 cycles. Meanwhile, the core-shell structured CaO-based sorbent holds good potentials to inhibit the adverse impact of in-situ coal combustion compared with conventional non-shell pellets in practical CaL system.

Abstract:The cyclic calcination/carbonation reaction of calcium-based sorbents is an effective approach for capturing CO2 from coal combustion and gasification processes.It was introducesd that effect of different precursors on CO2 cyclic absorption performance of CaO sorbents,and also introduces some approaches solving the problem about sharp decay of absorbing CO2 ability for limestone with a number of cycle.
Improved performance of modified CaO-Al2O3 based pellets for CO2 capture under realistic Ca-looping conditions

Abstract:Calcium looping (CaL) technology implementation under realistic conditions is limited due to some problems related with sorbents' deactivation at high temperatures, being the incorporation of inert additives or supports identified as a promising alternative to overcome these issues. In this work, alumina was incorporated to CaO-based pellets containing limestone and waste marble powder (WMP) as Ca source by extrusion followed by calcination at 800 °C and granulation, using different CaO/Al2O3 ratios (50/50, 60/40 and 70/30) and Methocell™ as pore forming agent. Sorbents were tested in a laboratory scale fixed and fluidized bed reactor. The carbonation was carried out with 25% of CO2 at 700 °C, while the calcination was performed under realistic industrial conditions (70 – 80% of CO2 at 930 °C), foreseeing the subsequent CO2 utilization. During the CaL tests calcium aluminates (CaAl2O4 and Ca3Al2O6) were formed, reducing the amount of CaO available for capture (31–42% of free CaO) but improving the sorbents’ CO2 capture performance due to the role of these inert compounds as structural supports and the increase of sorbents’ surface area. The high amount of calcium aluminate support (58–69%) improved the mechanical resistance of the sorbents, with reduced fragmentation and abrasion problems during the fluidization. For both reactors, the highest CaO conversion was achieved for 60/40 CaO/Al2O3 based pellets. Considering the pure WMP sorbent as reference, the total amount of CO2 captured after 10 cycles by 60/40 CaO/Al2O3 based pellets (g CO2/g CaO) increased 93% and 135%, in the fixed and fluidized bed reactors, respectively.
