Abstract:In this paper, we study the regularity of optimal mappings in Monge's mass transfer problem. Using the approximation to Monge's cost function c(x, y) = vertical bar x - y vertical bar through the costs c(x, y) = root epsilon(2) + vertical bar x - y vertical bar(2), we consider the optimal mappings T-epsilon for these costs, and we prove that the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix DT epsilon, which are all positive, are locally uniformly bounded. By an example we prove that T-epsilon is in general not uniformly Lipschitz continuous as epsilon -> 0, even if the mass distributions are positive and smooth, and the domains are c-convex. Abstract:This paper mainly investigates the approximation of a global maximizer of the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem in higher dimensions through the approach of nonlinear partial differential equations with Dirichlet boundary. Using an approximation mechanism, the primal maximization problem can be transformed into a sequence of minimization problems. By applying the systematic canonical duality theory, one is able to derive a sequence of analytic solutions for the minimization problems. In the final analysis, the convergence of the sequence to an analytical global maximizer of the primal Monge-Kantorovich problem will be demonstrated.

Abstract:We consider the evolution of two incompressible, immiscible fluids with different densities in porous media, known as the Muskat problem [21], which in two dimensions is analogous to the Hele-Shaw cell [26]. We establish, for a class of large and monotone initial data, the global existence of weak solutions. The proof is based on a local well-posedness result for the initial data with certain specific asymptotics at spatial infinity and a new maximum principle for the first derivative of the graph function.

Abstract:We prove that if $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ is a (not necessarily strictly) convex, $C^1$ domain, and $\mu$ and $\bar{\mu}$ are probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure on $\partial \Omega$, with densities bounded away from zero and infinity, whose $2$-Monge-Kantorovich distance is sufficiently small, then there exists a continuous Monge solution to the optimal transport problem with cost function given by the quadratic distance on the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. This result is also shown to be sharp, via a counterexample when $\Omega$ is uniformly convex but not $C^1$. Additionally, if $\Omega$ is $C^{1, \alpha}$ regular for some $\alpha$, then the Monge solution is shown to be Hölder continuous.

Abstract:We propose an extension of the computational fluid mechanics approach to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem, which was developed by Benamou-Brenier. Our extension allows optimal transfer of unnormalized and unequal masses. We obtain a one-parameter family of simple modifications of the formulation in [4]. This leads us to a new Monge-Ampere type equation and a new Kantorovich duality formula. These can be solved efficiently by, for example, the Chambolle-Pock primal-dual algorithm. This solution to the extended mass transfer problem gives us a simple metric for computing the distance between two unnormalized densities. The L1 version of this metric was shown in [23] (which is a precursor of our work here) to have desirable properties.

Abstract:We prove the existence of solutions to the Monge problem with an absolutely continuous initial measure by solving a secondary variational problem with any strictly convex function, the so-called secondary variational method. The cost function is given by an arbitrary norm on R-n. In addition, if a norm satisfies the uniform smoothness and convexity estimates, and two measures are absolutely continuous, then for the Monge problem with such a norm cost function, we can find a same optimal transport map via the secondary variational method even with different strictly convex functions (the classical Monge problem is a special case). This optimal transport map is just the one which uniquely satisfies a monotone condition. Finally, we construct an example with the L-1 norm cost function, which is not a strictly convex norm, to show that one can get different optimal transport maps by solving secondary variational problems with different strictly convex functions. In view of this example, for the Monge problem between two absolutely continuous measures, if a norm cost function does not satisfy the uniform smoothness and convexity estimates, there can be no uniqueness of optimal transport maps obtained via the secondary variational method.
Numerical Optimal Transport from 1D to 2D using a Non-local Monge-Ampère Equation

Abstract:We consider the numerical solution of the optimal transport problem between densities that are supported on sets of unequal dimension. Recent work by McCann and Pass reformulates this problem into a non-local Monge-Ampère type equation. We provide a new level set framework for interpreting this non-linear PDE. We also propose a novel discretisation that combines carefully constructed monotone finite difference schemes with a variable-support discrete version of the Dirac delta function. The resulting method is consistent and monotone. These new techniques are described and implemented in the setting of 1D to 2D transport, but can easily be generalised to higher dimensions. Several challenging computational tests validate the new numerical method.

Abstract:We prove that the solution map for a family of non-linear transport equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a velocity field given by the convolution of the density with a kernel that is smooth away from the origin and homogeneous of degree $-(n-1)$, is continuous in both the little Hölder class and the little Zygmund class. For particular choices of the kernel, one recovers well-known equations such as the 2D Euler or the 3D quasi-geostrophic equations.

Abstract:We investigate metric conditions that allow to prove existence and uniqueness of a map solving the Monge problem between two marginals in a metric (measure) space, proving two main results. Firstly, we introduce a nonsmooth version of the Riemannian twist condition that we call local metric twist condition, showing, under this assumption on the cost function, existence and uniqueness of optimal transport maps. Secondly, we prove the same result for cost equal to $d^2$ in a metric space $(X, d)$ satisfying a quantitative non-branching assumption, that we call locally-uniformly non-branching.

Abstract:The theory of Monge-Kantorovich Optimal Mass Transport (OMT) has in recent years spurred a fast developing phase of research in stochastic control, control of ensemble systems, thermodynamics, data science, and several other fields in engineering and science. Specifically, OMT endowed the space of probability distributions with a rich Riemannian-like geometry, the Wasserstein geometry and the Wasserstein $\mathcal W_2$-metric. This geometry proved fruitful in quantifying and regulating the uncertainty of deterministic and stochastic systems, and in dealing with problems related to the transport of ensembles in continuous and discrete spaces. We herein introduce a new type of transportation problems. The salient feature of these problems is that particles/agents in the ensemble, that are to be transported, are labeled and their relative position along their journey is of interest. Of particular importance in our program are closed orbits where particles return to their original place after being transported along closed paths. Thereby, control laws are sought so that the distribution of the ensemble traverses a closed orbit in the Wasserstein manifold without mixing. This feature is in contrast with the classical theory of optimal transport where the primary object of study is the path of probability densities, without any concern about mixing of the flow, which is expected and allowed when traversing curves in the Wasserstein space. In the theory that we present, we explore a hitherto unstudied sub-Riemannian structure of Monge-Kantorovich transport where the relative position of particles along their journey is modeled by the holonomy of the transportation schedule. From this vantage point, we discuss several other problems of independent interest.

A system of continuity equations with nonlocal interactions of Morse type

Abstract:We study a system of two continuity equations with nonlocal velocity fields using interaction potentials of both attractive and repulsive Morse type. Such a system is of interest in many contexts in multi-population modelling. We prove existence, uniqueness and stability in the 2-Wasserstein spaces of probability measures via Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme and gradient flow solutions in the spirit of the Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré theory. We then formulate a deterministic particle scheme for this model and prove that gradient flow solutions are obtained in the many particle limit by discrete densities constructed out of moving particles satisfying a suitable system of ODEs. The ODE system is formulated in a non standard way in order to bypass the Lipschitz singularity of the kernel, with difference quotients of the kernel replacing its derivative.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Neumann problem of Monge-Ampère equations in Semi-space. For two dimensional case, we prove that its viscosity convex solutions must be a quadratic polynomial.
