Abstract:Herein, a Nd-doped GdLaNbO4 (Nd: GLNO) single crystal has been grown successfully using the Czochralski method. The segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions in the Nd: GLNO crystal is measured to be 0.71. The X-ray power diffraction patterns of the Nd: GLNO crystal confirm that the as-grown crystal has the same crystal structure as pure GdNbO4. The structural parameters of the as-grown crystal are obtained via an X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and fluorescence decay curve of Nd: GLNO were obtained at room temperature. The small emission cross-section at 1065 nm and long fluorescence lifetime of Nd3+ ions (176.4 mu s) indicate that the Nd: GLNO crystal is suitable for generating an ultrashort pulse laser. A maximum continuous wave (CW) laser output power of 957 mW is achieved at 1.06 mm, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 30.3% and slope efficiency of 34.2%. All the obtained results imply that this crystal is a novel mixed niobate-based laser host suitable for laser diode pumps.

Abstract:A new mixed laser crystal Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3NbO4 (Nd:GYNO) with high quality was grown successfully by Czochralski method. Its structure parameters are obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions is 0.61 in GYNO host. The maximum absorption cross section at 809 nm and peak emission cross section at 1065.6 nm of Nd: GYNO crystal are 11.6 x 10(-20) and 20.5 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of F-4(3/2) manifold for Nd3+ in Nd:GYNO crystal is fitted to be 156 mu s. Diode-pumped continuous-wave laser operations at 1.06 mu m with Nd: GYNO crystals cut perpendicular to crystallographic a, b, and c axes (denoted as a-, b-c-cut, respectively) were demonstrated. A maximum output power of 0.98 W was obtained with c-cut crystal, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 31.3% and a slope efficiency of 30.4%. All these results imply that the Nd: GYNO crystal has great potential application in low and even moderate lasers. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A mixed laser crystal of Nd-doped GYNO crystal was grown successfully by Czochralski method. The crystal belongs to monoclinic system with space group I2/a, the structural parameters are obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The defects and dislocations along three crystallographic orientations were studied by using the chemical etching method with the phosphoric acid etchant. The mechanical properties (including hardness, yield strength, fracture toughness, and brittle index) of the crystal were estimated by Vickers hardness test. The transmission spectrum was measured at room temperature, and the absorption peaks were assigned. Spectral properties of the as-grown crystal were investigated by Judd–Ofelt theory, and the Judd–Ofelt intense parameters Ω2,4,6 were obtained to be 9.674 × 10−20, 2.092 × 10−20, and 4.061 × 10−20 cm2, respectively.

Abstract:A Nd-doped GdNbO 4 crystal was grown successfully by Czochralski method. Its monoclinic structure was determined by X-ray diffraction; the unit-cell parameters are a = 5.38 Å, b = 11.09 Å, c = 5.11 Å, and β = 94.56°. The morphological defects of Nd:GdNbO 4 crystal were investigated using the chemical etching with the phosphoric acid etchant. For a new crystal, the physical properties are of great importance. The hardness and density of Nd:GdNbO 4 were investigated first. Thermal properties of Nd:GdNbO 4 , including thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat, were measured along a-, b- , and c -crystalline axes. Thermal properties indicate that the Nd:GdNbO 4 pumped along c -axis can reduce the thermal lensing effect effectively. The specific heat is 0.53 J g −1 K −1 at 300 K, indicating a relatively high damage threshold of Nd:GdNbO 4 . The transmission and emission spectrum of Nd:GdNbO 4 were measured, and the absorption peaks were assigned. The strongest emission peak of Nd:GdNbO 4 is located at 1065.3 nm in the spectral range of 850–1420 nm excited by 808 nm laser. The refractive index of Nd:GdNbO 4 was calculated with the transmission spectrum and fitted with Sellmeier equation. All these obtained results is of great significance for the further research of Nd:GdNbO 4 .

Abstract:A new laser crystal Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3TaO4 (Nd:GYTO) with high quality was grown by Czochralski method. The physical properties, including temperature dependent density, specific heat, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity, were systematically characterized. The maximum absorption cross section at 809 nm and the stimulated emission cross section at 1066.6 nm are 6.886 x 10(-20) cm(2) and 22 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The fluorescence lifetime is measured to be 182.4 mu s. Up to 2.37 W of continuous wave (CW) laser operating at 1066.5 nm has been successfully realized, corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 36.5% and a slope efficiency of 38%. Compared with Nd:GdTaO4, Nd:GYTO shows an enhancement of the laser performance. These results demonstrate that Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3TaO4 is a novel laser crystal with low symmetry and has great potential as low to moderate power lasers. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A new crystal of Yb-doped gadolinium niobate, 5 at.% Yb:GdNbO4, is grown by Czochralski method for the first time. The structure of Yb:GdNbO4 is determined by Rietveld refinement to the X-ray powder diffraction data and it belongs to the monoclinic space group of I-2/a. With the center of 955 nm, the FWHM of absorption spectra is 57 nm and the absorption cross section is calculated to be 0.97 x 10(-20) cm(2). Spectral parameters are calculated with absorption spectrum. In emission spectra, the strongest peak is at 1001 rim and the FWHM is 49 rim. In comparison with corresponding emission cross section of Yb:YSO and Yb:GSO, Yb:GdNbO4 exhibits a relatively larger emission cross section. In addition, a maximal output power of 270 mW is obtained and the slope efficiency is 7.5%. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A Nd-doped niobate mixed laser crystal of Nd-0.01:Gd0.89La0.1NbO4 (Nd:GLNO) has been grown successfully by Czochralski method. The absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum and fluorescence decay curve of Nd: GLNO crystal were measured at room temperature. The spectral parameters of Nd:GLNO crystal were obtained based on Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory calculation. The three intensity parameters Omega(t)(t= 2, 4, 6) were calculated to be 6.61, 1.43 and 3.31x10(-20) cm(2), respectively. On the base of the Ot calculation, the branching ratios, spontaneous radiative probabilities, radiative lifetime and fluorescence quantum efficiency of the F-4(3/2) level have been evaluated. Compared with other Nd-doped niobate laser crystal, Nd:GLNO shows a special spectral properties due to the large structure disorder caused by La3+. All the results demonstrate that this crystal is a specific low symmetrical laser material different from other niobates family crystals such as Nd:GdNbO4 (Nd:GNO) and Nd:YNbO4 (Nd:YNO) and can be considered as a promising laser material suitable for laser diode pumping.
Growth, Structure, Spectral Properties and Crystal-Field Analysis of Monoclinic Nd:Ynbo4 Single Crystal

Abstract:A Nd:YNbO4 single crystal was successfully grown by Czochralski (Cz) method, its structural and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The X-ray rocking curve of the (010) diffraction face of Nd:YNbO4 crystal was measured, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of this diffraction peak is 0.05°, which indicates a high crystalline quality of the as-grown crystal. Its lattice parameters, atomic coordinates and so on were obtained by Rietvield refinement to X-ray diffraction data. According to the Archimedes drainage method, the crystal density of Nd:YNbO4 is calculated to be 5.4g/cm3. The Mohr′s hardness value along (010) face was determined to be 6.0. The transmission spectrum along (010) face at room temperature was recorded and the excitation and emission spectra at 8K were measured. Photoluminescence peaks of Nd:YNbO4 were assigned, and the crystal-field splitting of Nd3+ in YNbO4 was obtained. The fluorescence lifetime of the 4F3/2→4I11/2 transition of Nd3+ in YNbO4 is fitted to be 152μs These spectroscopic and energy splitting data give an important reference for the research of laser property of Nd:YNbO4 crystal.

Abstract:Since the first stimulated optical radiation in ruby crystal laser was devised by Maiman in 1960[1], lasers have undergone a rapid development for over half a century. In 1964, especially, continuous wave (CW) laser oscillation was successfully generated using an Nd:YAG crystal[2], and after that CW laser technology and laser gain materials has attracted tremendous attentions, which affects the application and development of lasers. Abstract:A novel mixed laser crystal of Nd:GdLaNbO4 (Nd:GLNO) was grown successfully by conventional Czochralski method. The unit cell parameters were obtained by Rietveld refinement method. The density of the as-grown crystal was measured by Archimedean buoyancy method and calculated in theory. Absorption spectrum of Nd:GLNO crystal was recorded at room temperature, and 11 absorption peaks were assigned. The defects of Nd:GLNO crystal were revealed by using chemical etching method with phosphoric acid as etchant. The mechanical properties (including hardness, yield strength, elastic stiffness constant, fracture toughness and brittleness index) were systemically estimated based on Vickers hardness test. All these obtained results play a quite important role in further investigation of Nd:GLNO crystal.

Abstract:Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals with the size 25 mm×100 mm were grown by the Czochralski method.The habit of as-grown crystal was discussed and the phase of crystal was analyzed by XRD.The characteristics of thermal expansion were measured and the coefficient of thermal expansion of c axis was twice as much as a axis.Polarized absorption spectra,fluorescence spectra,and fluorescence decay curve were measured at room temperature.The standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theories have been performed to analyze the absorption spectra and the spectroscopic parameters.Results show that Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals have relatively large luminescent quantum efficiency.The Nd3+∶NaY(WO4)2 crystal was made into laser stick and and the laser experiment was performed using a xenon flash lamp as a pump source.Maximum pulse energy of 786 mJ with a repetition rate of 1Hz has been obtained.A maxinum output power of 87 mW and the double-frequency conversion efficiency is more than 25%,slope efficiency is 7.98%.

Abstract:The growth and characterization of Cr,Nd:Y3Al5O12 (YAG) crystal are reported. By improving the synthesis and sintering processes of polycrystalline materials, as well as the temperature gradient and annealing atmosphere, a high quality crystal with size of ϕ30 mm × 110 mm is obtained by using the Czochralski technique. After measuring the concentrations of dopant Cr3+ and Nd3+ within the different parts of the grown crystal, it is found that the distribution of dopant ions is uniform throughout the crystal. The fluorescence spectra of Cr,Nd:YAG crystal exhibit intense emissions at 1064 nm under excitations of 808 and 450 nm. The fluorescence lifetime of Nd: 4F3/2 level is obtained to be 234.2 µs. The maximum average output power reaches 7.87 W with a slope efficiency of 31.2% for near‐infrared laser at 1063.9 nm. The above results indicate that Cr,Nd:YAG crystal is a promising gain media for all‐solid state lasers.

Abstract:By adopting proper temperature field, growth parameters and pulling–annealing technique a series of high quality ZnO doped lithium niobate (LN) crystals were grown by Czochralski method from the congruent melt. The defect structure of Zn:LN crystals was studied by X-ray analyses, IR and Raman spectrum. It is suggested that Zn ions first occupied Nb ions on Li sites, then Zn ions occupied the ordinary Li sites. Its photo-refraction threshold indicated crystal containing 6mol% Zn:LN has the highest resistance to optical damage, similar to Mg doped LN (5mol% MgO), having increased two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:We have demonstrated continuous wave (CW) laser operation of Nd:YNbO4 crystal at 1066 nm for the first time. A maximum output power of 1.12 W with the incident power of 5.0 W is successfully achieved corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 22.4% and a slope efficiency of 24.0%. The large absorption cross section (8.7 x 10(-20) cm(2)) and wide absorption band (6 nm) at around 808 nm indicates the good pumping efficiency by laser diodes (LD). The small emission cross section (29 x 10(-20) cm(2),) and relative long lifetime of the F-4(3/2) -> (4)l(11/2) transition indicates good energy storage capacity of Nd:YNb04. Moreover, the raw materials of Nd:YNbO4 are stable, thus, it can grow high-quality and large-size by Czochralski (CZ) method. Therefore the Nd:YNbO4 crystal is a potentially new laser material suitable for LD pumping. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Nd-GGG crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method, and its structure was studied by laser Micro-Raman spectra. The Raman peaks and fluorescence peaks were discerned by using two excitation wavelengths (Ar+ 325 nm and 514.5 nm), the appeared fluorescence peaks were analyzed the tetrahedral, octahedral and dodecahedral structure of Nd:GGG crystal were contacted with the Raman peaks, and the vibration modes were also recognized. The obtained results are helpful to research the structure of solid-liquid boundary layer during the Nd:GGG growth and the change rule of the growth unit in the boundary layer.

The defects structure morphology of Nd:GSAG and Nd:YSAG crystals were investigated by chemical etching method with phosphoric acid as etchant.
