Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a natural class of groups that act as affine transformations of $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$. We investigate whether these solvable, “abelian-by-cyclic," groups can act smoothly and nonaffinely on $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$ while remaining homotopic to the affine actions. In the affine actions, elliptic and hyperbolic dynamics coexist, forcing a priori complicated dynamics in nonaffine perturbations. We first show, using the KAM method, that any small and sufficiently smooth perturbation of such an affine action can be conjugated smoothly to an affine action, provided certain Diophantine conditions on the action are met. In dimension two, under natural dynamical hypotheses, we get a complete classification of such actions; namely, any such group action by $$C^r$$ diffeomorphisms can be conjugated to the affine action by $$C^{r-\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. Next, we show that in any dimension, $$C^1$$ small perturbations can be conjugated to an affine action via $$C^{1+\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. The method is a generalization of the Herman theory for circle diffeomorphisms to higher dimensions in the presence of a foliation structure provided by the hyperbolic dynamics.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit description of the endomorphisms of free-abelian by free groups together with a characterization of when they are injective and surjective. As a consequence we see that free-abelian by free groups are Hopfian and not coHopfian, and we investigate the isomorphism problem and the Brinkmann Problem for this family of groups. In particular, we prove that the isomorphism problem (undecidable in general) is decidable when restricted to finite actions, and that the Brinkmann Problem is decidable both for monomorphisms and automorphisms.

Chaos for endomorphisms of completely metrizable groups and linear operators on Fréchet spaces

Abstract:Using the techniques in topological dynamics, we give a uniform treatment of Li-Yorke chaos, mean Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos for continuous endomorphisms of completely metrizable groups, and characterize three kinds of chaos (resp. extreme chaos) in term of the existence of corresponding semi-irregular points (resp. irregular points). We demonstrate some inner automorphisms of Polish groups to illustrate the results. We also apply the results to the chaos theory of continuous linear operators on Fréchet spaces, which improves some results in the literature.

Abstract:The concepts of the scale and tidy subgroups for an automorphism of a totally disconnected locally compact group were defined in seminal work by George A. Willis in the 1990s, and recently generalized to the case of endomorphisms (G. A. Willis, Math. Ann. 361 (2015), 403--442). We show that central facts concerning the scale, tidy subgroups, quotients, and contraction groups of automorphisms extend to the case of endomorphisms. In particular, we obtain results concerning the domain of attraction around an invariant closed subgroup.

Abstract:We consider the dynamics associated with an arbitrary semigroup of transcendental entire functions. Fatou-Julia theory is used to investigate the dynamics of these semigroups. Several results of the dynamics associated with iteration of a transcendental entire function have been extended to transcendental semigroup case. We also investigate the dynamics of conjugate semigroups, Abelian transcendental semigroups and wandering and Baker domains of transcendental semigroups.

Abstract:Let X be a compact metric space, G be a countable discrete infinite amenable group continuously acting on X and F be a Følner sequence of G . In this paper, we acquire some ergodic properties of the discrete amenable group action (X,G) . By virtue of these properties, we prove the existence of syndetic sensitivity of the minimal F -centre of attraction of a point x∈X provided that the minimal F -centre of attraction of x is not S -generic and admits a dense set of quasi-weakly almost periodic points relative to F of (X,G) . The presented results enhance some main results of [Z. Chen and X. Dai, Chaotic dynamics of minimal centre of attraction of discrete amenable group actions , J. Math. Anal. Appl. 456 (2017), pp. 1397–1414.].

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of the asymptotically almost automorphic solution of the following type of abstract nonlinear integro-dynamic equation \begin{eqnarray*} y^{\Delta}(s) &=&Ay(s)+\mathcal{F}\left(s,y(s),\int\limits_{t_0}^{s}{\mathcal{H}(s,\tau,y(\tau))}\Delta\tau\right),~ s\in\mathbb{T}^k, y(0)&=&y_0 \end{eqnarray*} in the Banach space of continuous function on a time scale $\mathbb{T}$. We apply the Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem to show the existence of an almost automorphic solution of the above dynamic equation.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set and $f:A\rightarrow A$ a bijective function. Necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ are determined which makes it possible to endow $A$ with a binary operation $*$ such that $(A,*)$ is a cyclic group and $f\in \mbox{Aut}(A)$. This result is extended to all abelian groups in case $|A|=p^2, \ p$ a prime. Finally, in case $A$ is countably infinite, those $f$ for which it is possible to turn $A$ into a group $(A,*)$ isomorphic to ${\Bbb Z}^n$ for some $n\ge 1$, and with $f\in \mbox{Aut} (A)$, are completely characterised.

Infinite systems of equations in abelian and nilpotent groups

Abstract:Every abelian (and even every nilpotent) group contains a solution of any finite unimodular system of equations over itself. However, this is not true for infinite systems. We deduced a criterion for a periodic abelian group to contain a solution of any infinite unimodular system of equations over itself. Using this criterion, we show that nilpotent groups of bounded period also contain solutions of all infinite unimodular systems of equations over themselves. Solvability of every nonsingular infinite system of equations in each divisible nilpotent group is shown as well.

Fuchs' problem for endomorphisms of nonabelian groups

Abstract:In 1960, László Fuchs posed the problem of determining which groups $G$ are realizable as the group of units in some ring $R$. In \cite{chebolu2022fuchs}, we investigated the following variant of Fuchs' problem, for abelian groups: which groups $G$ are realized by a ring $R$ where every group endomorphism of $G$ is induced by a ring endomorphism of $R$? Such groups are called fully realizable. In this paper, we answer the aforementioned question for several families of nonabelian groups: symmetric, dihedral, quaternion, alternating, and simple groups; almost cyclic $p$-groups; and groups whose Sylow $2$-subgroup is either cyclic or normal and abelian. We construct three infinite families of fully realizable nonabelian groups using iterated semidirect products.
