Abstract:We investigate group actions in which certain primitive elements fix a point, while not all group elements possess this property when acting upon some space. Using similar dynamical tools, we introduce the notion of Nielsen girth and prove the existence of groups with infinite girth but having finite Nielsen girth.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.

Rigidity of braid group actions on $\mathbb{R}$ and of low-genus mapping class group actions on $S^1$

Abstract:Every nontrivial action of the braid group $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms yields, up to conjugation by a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$, a representation $\rho : B_n \rightarrow \mathrm{H\widetilde{ome}o}_+(S^1)$ and therefore determines a translation number for every element of $B_n$. In this manuscript we offer a simple characterisation of which actions of $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ produce translation numbers that agree with those arising from the standard Nielsen-Thurston action on $\mathbb{R}$. Our approach is to prove an analogous statement concerning left orderings of $B_n$ via a technique that uses the space of left orderings of $B_n$, the isolated points in this space, and the natural conjugacy action of $B_n$. We use this result to extend recent rigidity results of Mann and Wolff concerning mapping class group actions on $S^1$ to the case of low-genus surfaces with marked points.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of primitive elements in arbitrary truncated $p$-divisible groups. By design, the scheme of primitive elements is finite and locally free over the base. Primitive elements generalize the "points of exact order $N$," developed by Drinfeld and Katz-Mazur for elliptic curves.

Abstract:This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.

On the Girth of Groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes

Abstract:We obtain a sufficient condition for lattices in the automorphism group of a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex to have infinite girth. As a corollary, we get a version of Girth Alternative for groups acting geometrically: any such group is either {locally finite}-by-{virtually abelian} or it has infinite girth. We produce counterexamples to show that the alternative fails in the general class of groups acting cocompactly on finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes by obtaining examples of non virtually solvable groups which satisfy a law.

On Primitive Subgroups Of Finite Groups

Abstract:A subgroup H of a group G is called primitive if it is a proper subgroup in the intersection of all subgroups of G containing H as its proper subgroup. In 1971, Johnson proved that a finite group G is supersoluble if every primitive subgroup of G has a prime-power index in G. It is known that the converse of this result is generally not true. In this note, we investigate the structure of finite groups satisfying the Johnson's property. In particular, by extending the main result of Johnson, we prove that a finite group G is supersoluble if every primitive subgroup of G has a nilpotent Hall supplement in G. Thus, the result of Johnson is strengthened.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable group and $(X, \Gamma)$ a compact topological dynamical system. We study the question of the existence of an intermediate $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ $$C^{*}_{r}(\Gamma)<\mathcal{A}<C(X)\rtimes_r\Gamma,$$ which is not of the form $\mathcal{A} = C(Y) \rtimes_r \Gamma$, corresponding to a factor map $(X,\Gamma) \to (Y,\Gamma)$. Here $ C^{*}_{r} (\Gamma)$ and $C(X) \rtimes_r \Gamma$ are the reduced $C^*$-algebras of $\Gamma$ and $(X,\Gamma)$ respectively. Our main results are (1) For $\Gamma$, which is not $C^*$-simple, if $(X,\Gamma)$ admits a $\Gamma$-invariant probability measure, then such a sub-algebra always exists. (2) For $\Gamma = \mathbb{Z}$ and $(X, \Gamma)$ an irrational rotation of the circle $X = S^1$, we give a full description of all these non-crossed-product subalgebras.

Dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for group actions and groupoids

Abstract:We introduce the notion of dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for actions of discrete groups on compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids with compact unit space. Using the work of Bartels, Lück, and Reich to bridge our notion for group actions with asymptotic dimension growth for groups, thus providing many concrete examples for our notion. Moreover, we show that the asymptotic dimension growth for a discrete metric space of bounded geometry is equivalent to the dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for its associated coarse groupoid, hence deducing that the coarse groupoid with subexponential dynamic asymptotic dimension growth is amenable. More generally, every $\sigma$-compact locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid with compact unit space having dynamic asymptotic dimension growth at most $x^{\alpha}$ $(0<\alpha<1)$ is amenable.

Abstract:In this article, we define amorphic complexity for actions of locally compact $\sigma$-compact amenable groups on compact metric spaces. Amorphic complexity, originally introduced for $\mathbb Z$-actions, is a topological invariant which measures the complexity of dynamical systems in the regime of zero entropy. We show that it is tailor-made to study strictly ergodic group actions with discrete spectrum and continuous eigenfunctions. This class of actions includes, in particular, Delone dynamical systems related to regular model sets obtained via Meyer's cut and project method. We provide sharp upper bounds on amorphic complexity of such systems. In doing so, we observe an intimate relationship between amorphic complexity and fractal geometry.

Abstract:In ergodic theory, given sufficient conditions on the system, every weak mixing $\mathbb{N}$-action is strong mixing along a density one subset of $\mathbb{N}$. We ask if a similar statement holds in topological dynamics with density one replaced with thickness. We show that given sufficient initial conditions, a group action in topological dynamics is strong mixing on a thick subset of the group if and only if the system is $k$-transitive for all $k$, and conclude that an analogue of this statement from ergodic theory holds in topological dynamics when dealing with abelian groups.

Abstract:Based mainly on examples of interest in mechanics, we define the notion of a polite group action. One may view this as not only trying to give a more general notion than properness of a group action, but also to more fully understand the role of invariant functions in describing just about everything of interest in reduction. We show that a polite action of a symmetry group of a dynamical system admits reduction and reconstruction.

Abstract:In this paper we study chaotic behavior of actions of a countable discrete group acting on a compact metric space by self-homeomorphisms.For actions of a countable discrete group G, we introduce local weak mixing and Li-Yorke chaos; and prove that if G is infinite then local weak mixing implies Li-Yorke chaos, and if G is an infinite countable discrete amenable group then positive topological entropy implies local weak mixing. Moreover, when considering a shift of finite type for actions of an infinite countable amenable group G, if the action has positive topological entropy then its homoclinic equivalence relation is non-trivial, and if additionally G is residually finite and the action contains a dense set of periodic points then the converse holds true.

Abstract:We extend the classical Baire category approach, used in proving the finite generator theorem of Krieger, the homomorphism theorem of Sinai and the isomorphism theorem of Ornstein, applying a similar reasoning to the case of actions of countably infinite amenable groups. In principle we follow the lines of the paper by Burton, Keane and Serafin (\cite{BKS}), showing that measures defining homomorphisms or isomorphisms form residual subsets in suitably chosen spaces of joinings.

Abstract:In this paper we survey some recent results on actions of finite groups on topological manifolds. Given an action of a finite group $G$ on a manifold $X$, these results provide information on the restriction of the action to a subgroup of $G$ of index bounded above by a number depending only on $X$. Some of these results refer to the algebraic structure of the group, such as being abelian, or nilpotent, or admitting a generating subset of controlled size; other results refer to the geometry of the action, e.g. to the existence of fixed points, to the collection of stabilizer subgroups, or to the action on cohomology.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of sufficiently large degree $n$, then either $G$ is primitive and Frobenius, or the proportion of derangements in $G$ is larger than $1/(2n^{1/2})$. This is sharp, generalizes substantially bounds of Cameron--Cohen and Guralnick--Wan, and settles conjectures of Guralnick--Tiep and Bailey--Cameron--Giudici--Royle in large degree. We also give an application to coverings of varieties over finite fields.

History and Overview

Abstract:Students having had a semester course in abstract algebra are exposed to the elegant way in which finite group theory leads to proofs of familiar facts in elementary number theory. In this note we offer two examples of such group theoretical proofs using the action of a group on a set. The first is Fermat's little theorem and the second concerns a well known identity involving the famous Euler phi function. The tools that we use to establish both results are sometimes seen in a second semester algebra course in which group actions are studied. Specifically, we will use the class equation of a group action and Burnside's theorem.

Abstract:Consider a finite primitive solvable group. We observe that a result of Y. Yang implies that there exist two points whose pointwise stabilizer has derived length at most $9$. We show that, if the group has odd cardinality, then there exist two points whose pointwise stabilizer is abelian.

Abstract:We introduce several approaches to studying the Cantor-Bendixson decomposition of and the dynamics on the (topological) space of subgroups for various families of countable groups. In particular, we uncover the perfect kernel and the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space of subgroups of many new groups, including for instance infinitely ended groups, limit groups, hyperbolic 3-manifold groups and many graphs of groups. We also study the topological dynamics of the conjugation action on the perfect kernel, establishing the conditions for topological transitivity and higher topological transitivity. As an application, we obtain many new examples of groups in the class A of Glasner and Monod, i.e. admitting faithful transitive amenable actions. This includes for example right-angled Artin groups, limit groups, finitely presented C'(1/6) small cancellation groups, random groups at density d<1/6, and more generally all virtually compact special groups.
