Abstract:There are three aims of this note. The first one is to report some advances around the dynamical Mordell-Lang (=DML) conjecture. Second, we generalize some known results. For example, the Dynamical Mordell-lang conjecture was known for endomorphisms of $\mathbb{A}^2$ over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. We generalize this result to all endomorphisms of $\mathbb{A}^2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. We generalize the weak DML theorem to a uniform version and to a version for partial orbit. Using this, we give a new proof of the Kawaguchi-Silverman-Matsuzawa' upper bound for arithmetic degree. We indeed prove a uniform version which works in both number field and function field case in any characteristic and it works for partial orbits. We also reformulate the ``$p$-adic method", in particular the $p$-adic interpolation lemma in language of Berkovich space and get more general statements. The third aim is to propose some further questions.

Abstract:We disprove the original version of the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic and propose a improved version of this pDML conjecture. We prove that this new version holds for bounded-degree self-maps of projective varieties. Moreover, we propose a geometric version of this pDML conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that if $K$ is a complete algebraically closed non-archimedian valuation field of positive characteristic and $f$ is an endomorphism of $\mathbb{P}_{K}^{N}$ which is totally inseparable and behaves as the Frobenius on the special fiber, then $f$ satisfies the dynamical Mordell-Lang (DML) property. We also discuss some corollaries and generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic dynamics in arbitrary characteristic, in particular in positive characteristic. We generalise some basic facts on arithmetic degree and canonical height in positive characteristic. As applications, we prove the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces of positive entropy, the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces and for endomorphisms of projective varieties with large first dynamical degree. We also study ergodic theory for constructible topology. For example, we prove the equidistribution of backward orbits for finite flat endomorphisms with large topological degree. As applications, we give a simple proof for weak dynamical Mordell-Lang and prove a counting result for backward orbits without multiplicities. This gives some applications for equidistributions on Berkovich spaces.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety and $f\colon X\to X$ a finite surjective endomorphism. We consider Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (ZDO), and Adelic Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (AZO). We consider also Kawaguchi-Silverman Conjecture (KSC) asserting that the (first) dynamical degree $d_1(f)$ of $f$ equals the arithmetic degree $\alpha_f(P)$ at a point $P$ having Zariski dense $f$-forward orbit. Assuming $X$ is a smooth affine surface, such that the log Kodaira dimension $\bar{\kappa}(X)$ is non-negative (resp. the étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$ is infinite), we confirm AZO, (hence) ZDO, and KSC (when $\operatorname{deg}(f)\geq 2$) (resp. AZO and hence ZDO). We also prove ZDO (resp. AZO and hence ZDO) for every surjective endomorphism on any projective variety with ''larger'' first dynamical degree (resp. every dominant endomorphism of any semiabelian variety).

Abstract:We prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture (KSC), about the equality of arithmetic degree and dynamical degree, for every surjective endomorphism of any (possibly singular) projective surface. In high dimensions, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Kawamata log terminal projective variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism, provided that KSC holds for any surjective endomorphism with the ramification divisor being totally invariant and irreducible. In particular, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any rationally connected smooth projective threefold admitting an int-amplified endomorphism. The main ingredients are the equivariant minimal model program, the effectiveness of the anti-canonical divisor and a characterization of toric pairs.

Intersection of orbits of loxodromic automorphisms of affine surfaces

Abstract:We show the following result: If $X_0$ is an affine surface over a field $K$ and $f, g$ are two loxodromic automorphisms with an orbit meeting infinitely many times, then $f$ and $g$ must share a common iterate. The proof uses the preliminary work of the author in [Abb23] on the dynamics of endomorphisms of affine surfaces and arguments from arithmetic dynamics. We then show a dynamical Mordell-Lang type result for surfaces in $X_0 \times X_0$.

Abstract:The Jacobian conjecture is a well-known open problem in affine algebraic geometry that asks if any polynomial endomorphism of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^{n}$ ($n\geq2$) with jacobian $1$ is an automorphism. We present a survey about some results around this conjecture and we discuss an arithmetic aspect of this conjecture due to Essen-Lipton. We investigate some cases of this arithmetic approach showing the close relationship between the Jacobian Conjecture and the problem of counting $\mathbb{F}_p$-points of an affine scheme.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove a Calabi theorem for metrized line bundles over non-archimedean analytic spaces, and apply it to endomorphisms with the same polarization and the same set of preperiodic points over a complex projective variety. The proof uses Arakelov theory on Berkovich’s non-archimedean analytic spaces even though the results on dynamical systems can be purely stated over complex numbers. Abstract: We prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0. Our proof is complex analytic, which applies the classical Brody lemma to construct entire curves on complex varieties. Our key ingredients includes a new notion of partial height and its non-degeneracy in a suitable sense. The non-degeneracy is required in the application of the Brody lemma.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial klt projective variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism $f$, i.e., the modulus of any eigenvalue of $f^*|_{\text{NS}(X)}$ is greater than $1$. We prove Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for $f$ and also any other surjective endomorphism of $X$: the first dynamical degree equals the arithmetic degree of any point with Zariski dense orbit. This generalizes an early result of Kawaguchi and Silverman for the polarized $f$ case, i.e., $f^*|_{\text{NS}(X)}$ is diagonalizable with all eigenvalues of the same modulus greater than $1$.

Abstract:We define an “ample canonical height” for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call–Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mordell–Lang type result on the intersection of two Zariski dense orbits of two endomorphisms on a common variety.

On the dynamical Bogomolov conjecture for families of split rational maps

Abstract:We prove that Zhang's dynamical Bogomolov conjecture holds uniformly along $1$-parameter families of rational split maps and curves. This provides dynamical analogues of recent results of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne. In fact, we prove a stronger Bogomolov-type result valid for families of split maps in the spirit of the relative Bogomolov conjecture. We thus provide first instances of a generalization of a conjecture by Baker and DeMarco to higher dimensions. Our proof contains both arithmetic and analytic ingredients. We establish a characterization of curves that are preperiodic under the action of a non-exceptional split rational endomorphism $(f,g)$ of $(\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}})^2$ with respect to the measures of maximal entropy of $f$ and $g$, extending a previous result of Levin-Przytycki. We further establish a height inequality for families of split maps and varieties comparing the values of a fiber-wise Call-Silverman canonical height with a height on the base and valid for most points of a non-preperiodic variety. This provides a dynamical generalization of a result by Habegger and generalizes results of Call-Silverman and Baker to higher dimensions. In particular, we establish a geometric Bogomolov theorem for split rational maps and varieties of arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:Let \mathbb{K} be an algebraically closed field, X a smooth projective variety over \mathbb{K} and f \colon X\rightarrow X a dominant regular morphism. Let N^{i}(X) be the group of algebraic cycles, of codimension i , modulo numerical equivalence. Let \chi (f) be the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l})\rightarrow H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l}) on l -adic cohomology groups, and \lambda (f) the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon N^{*}(X)\rightarrow N^{*}(X) . We prove in this paper, by using consequences of Deligne's proof of Weil's Riemann hypothesis, that \chi (f)=\lambda (f) . This answers affirmatively a question posed by Esnault and Srinivas. Consequently, the algebraic entropy \log \chi (f) of an endomorphism is both a birational invariant and étale invariant. More general results are proven if either \mathbb{K}=\bar{\mathbb{F}}_{p} or the Standard Conjecture D holds (this applies specially to Abelian varieties). Among other results in the paper, we show that if some properties of dynamical degrees, known in the case \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{C} , hold in positive characteristics, then simple proofs of Weil's Riemann hypothesis follow. More generally, the analogy in positive characteristic of Serre's famous result on polarized endomorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds also follows.

Abstract:We introduce a new generalization of the notion of preperiodic hypersurface and explore some of its basic ramifications. We also prove that among nonlinear endomorphisms of projective space, those with a periodic critical point are Zariski dense. This answers a question of Ingram.

Abstract:We establish the dynamical Northcott property for polarized endomorphisms of a projective variety over a function field $\mathbf{K}$ of characteristic zero, and we relate this property to the notion of stability in complex dynamics. This extends previous results of Benedetto, Baker and DeMarco in dimension $1$, and of Chatzidakis-Hrushovski in higher dimension. Our proof uses complex dynamics arguments and does not rely on the previous ones. We first show that, when $\mathbf{K}$ is the field of rational functions of a normal complex projective variety, the canonical height of a subvariety is the mass of an appropriate bifurcation current and that a marked point is stable if and only if its canonical height is zero. We then establish the geometric dynamical Northcott property characterizing points of height zero in this setting, using a similarity argument. Moving from points to subvarieties, we propose, for polarized endomorphisms, a dynamical version of the geometric Bogomolov conjecture, recently proved by Cantat, Gao, Habegger, and Xie in the original setting of abelian varieties.

Abstract:Let $f:X\to X$ be a non-isomorphic (i.e., $\text{deg } f>1$) surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold $X$. We prove that any birational minimal model program becomes $f$-equivariant after iteration, provided that $f$ is $\delta$-primitive. Here $\delta$-primitive means that there is no $f$-equivariant (after iteration) dominant rational map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$ to a positive lower-dimensional projective variety $Y$ such that the first dynamical degree remains unchanged. This way, we further determine the building blocks of $f$. As the first application, we prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for every non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold. As the second application, we reduce the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for $f$ to a terminal threefold with only $f$-equivariant Fano contractions.
