Abstract:We introduce a new generalization of the notion of preperiodic hypersurface and explore some of its basic ramifications. We also prove that among nonlinear endomorphisms of projective space, those with a periodic critical point are Zariski dense. This answers a question of Ingram.

Abstract:Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us to generalize results in the plane of Cook, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel Faenzi, and Vallés to higher dimensions. In particular, we give a criterion to determine if a set Z admits very unexpected hypersurfaces in the case Z is invariant under the action of an irreducible reflection group on the ambient projective space. Our approach has new applications even in the projective plane where we are able to place strong conditions on sets of points Z which admit certain types of unexpected curves. We close relating Terao's Freeness Conjecture for line arrangements to a conjecture due to G. Dirac on configurations of points in the real plane.

Abstract:An endomorphism $f:\mathbb{P}^k\to\mathbb{P}^k$ of degree $d\geq2$ is said to be postcritically finite (or PCF) if its critical set $\mathrm{Crit}(f)$ is preperiodic, i.e. if there are integers $m>n\geq0$ such that $f^m(\mathrm{Crit}(f))\subseteq f^n(\mathrm{Crit}(f))$. When $k\geq2$, it was conjectured by Ingram, Ramadas and Silverman that, in the space $\mathrm{End}_d^k$ of all endomorphisms of degree $d$ of $\mathbb{P}^k$, such endomorphisms are not Zariski dense. We prove this conjecture. Further, in the space $\mathrm{Poly}_d^2$ of all regular polynomial endomorphisms of degree $d\geq2$ of the affine plane $\mathbb{A}^2$, we construct a dense and Zariski open subset where we have a uniform bound on the number of preperiodic points lying in the critical set. The proofs are a combination of the theory of heights in arithmetic dynamics and methods from real dynamics to produce open subsets with maximal bifurcation.

Periodic points of post-critically algebraic endomorphisms

Abstract:A holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is post-critically algebraic if its critical hypersurfaces are periodic or preperiodic. This notion generalizes the notion of post-critically finite rational maps in dimension one. We will study the eigenvalues of the differential of such a map along a periodic cycle. When $n=1$, a well-known fact is that the eigenvalue along a periodic cycle of a post-critically finite rational map is either superattracting or repelling. We prove that when $n=2$ the eigenvalues are still either superattracting or repelling. This is an improvement of a result by Mattias Jonsson. When $n\geq 2$ and the cycle is outside the post-critical set, we prove that the eigenvalues are repelling. This result improves one which was already obtained by Fornaess and Sibony under a hyperbolicity assumption on the complement of the post-critical set.

Ample canonical heights for endomorphisms on projective varieties

Abstract:We define an “ample canonical height” for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call–Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mordell–Lang type result on the intersection of two Zariski dense orbits of two endomorphisms on a common variety.

The author obtains the estimates of the rate of the distance between two fixed points and the derivatives of the second fundamental form. Abstract:We study the dynamics of algebraic families of maps on $\mathbb{P}^N$, over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, and the geometry of their preperiodic points. The goal of this note is to formulate a conjectural characterization of the subvarieties of $S \times\mathbb{P}^N$ containing a Zariski-dense set of preperiodic points, where the parameter space $S$ is a quasiprojective complex algebraic variety; the characterization is given in terms of the non-vanishing of a power of the invariant Green current associated to the family of maps. This conjectural characterization is inspired by and generalizes the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties, recently proved by Gao and Habegger, and it includes as special cases the Manin-Mumford Conjecture (theorem of Raynaud) and the Dynamical Manin-Mumford Conjecture (posed by Ghioca, Tucker, and Zhang). We provide examples where the equivalence is known to hold, and we show that several recent results can be viewed as special cases. Finally, we give the proof of one implication in the conjectural characterization.

Abstract:We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety and $f\colon X\to X$ a finite surjective endomorphism. We consider Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (ZDO), and Adelic Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (AZO). We consider also Kawaguchi-Silverman Conjecture (KSC) asserting that the (first) dynamical degree $d_1(f)$ of $f$ equals the arithmetic degree $\alpha_f(P)$ at a point $P$ having Zariski dense $f$-forward orbit. Assuming $X$ is a smooth affine surface, such that the log Kodaira dimension $\bar{\kappa}(X)$ is non-negative (resp. the étale fundamental group $\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$ is infinite), we confirm AZO, (hence) ZDO, and KSC (when $\operatorname{deg}(f)\geq 2$) (resp. AZO and hence ZDO). We also prove ZDO (resp. AZO and hence ZDO) for every surjective endomorphism on any projective variety with ''larger'' first dynamical degree (resp. every dominant endomorphism of any semiabelian variety).

Scanning the moduli of smooth hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Rigidity of periodic points for loxodromic automorphisms of affine surfaces

Abstract:We show that two automorphisms of an affine surface with dynamical degree strictly larger than 1 share a Zariski dense set of periodic points if and only if they have the same periodic points. We construct canonical heights for these automorphisms and use arithmetic equidistribution for adelic line bundles over quasiprojective varieties following the work of Yuan and Zhang. Finally, we extend the local arithmetic Hodge index theorem to a certain class of vertical adelic line bundles over quasiprojective varieties to conclude the proof.

Almost holomorphic curves in real analytic hypersurfaces

Abstract:Using the theory of exterior differential systems, we study the existence of germ of pseudo-holomorphic disk in a real analytic hypersurface locally defined in a complex manifold equipped with J a real analytic almost complex structure. The integrable case in C n with J the multiplication by i has been intensively studied by several authors [DF], [DA1] and [DA2] for example. The non integrable case is drastically different essentially due to the following fact : in generic case, there is no J-invariant objects of dimension bigger than one. This simple observation leads to the non existence of some equivalents of Segree varieties or ideals of holomorphic functions which play a fundamental role in the complex case. Nevertheless in the almost complex case, we adopt the exterior differential system point of view of E.Cartan developed and clarified in [BCGGG].

Abstract:We derive basic differential geometric formulae for surfaces in hyperbolic space represented as envelopes of horospheres. The dual notion of parallel hypersurfaces is also studied. The representation is applied to prove existence and regularity theorems for Weingarten surfaces in H^3, which satisfy (1-a)K = a(2-H), for an a < 0, and have a specified boundary curve at infinity. These surfaces are shown to be closely connected to conformal mappings of domains in S^2 into the unit disk and provide Riemannian interpretations for some conformal invariants associated to such mappings.

Abstract:We show the existence of large $\mathcal C^1$ open sets of area preserving endomorphisms of the two-torus which have no dominated splitting and are non-uniformly hyperbolic, meaning that Lebesgue almost every point has a positive and a negative Lyapunov exponent. The integrated Lyapunov exponents vary continuously with the dynamics in the $\mathcal C^1$ topology and can be taken as far away from zero as desired. Explicit real analytic examples are obtained by deforming linear endomorphisms, including expanding ones. The technique works in nearly every homotopy class and the examples are stably ergodic (in fact Bernoulli), provided that the linear map has no eigenvalue of modulus one.

Low-action holomorphic curves and invariant sets

Abstract:We prove a compactness theorem for sequences of low-action punctured holomorphic curves of controlled topology, in any dimension, without imposing the typical assumption of uniformly bounded Hofer energy. In the limit, we extract a family of closed Reeb-invariant subsets. Then, we prove new structural results for the U-map in ECH and PFH, implying that such sequences exist in abundance in low-dimensional symplectic dynamics. We obtain applications to symplectic dynamics and the geometry of surfaces. First, we prove generalizations to higher genus surfaces and three-manifolds of the celebrated Le Calvez-Yoccoz theorem. Second, we show that for any closed Riemannian or Finsler surface a dense set of points have geodesics passing through them that visit different sections of the surface. Third, we prove a version of Ginzburg-Gürel's "crossing energy bound" for punctured holomorphic curves, of arbitrary topology, in symplectizations of any dimension.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a boundaryless infinite-type surface with finitely many ends and consider an end-periodic homeomorphism $f$ of S. The end-periodicity of $f$ ensures that $M_f$, its associated mapping torus, has a compactification as a $3$-manifold with boundary; further, if $f$ is atoroidal, then $M_f$ admits a hyperbolic metric. Such maps admit invariant \emph{positive and negative Handel-Miller laminations}, $\Lambda^+$, $\Lambda^-$, whose leaves naturally project to the arc and curve complex of a given compact subsurface $Y\subset S$. As an end-periodic analogy to work of Minsky in the finite-type setting, we show that for every $\epsilon>0$ there exists $K> 0$ (depending only on $\epsilon$ and the \emph{capacity} of $f$) for which $d_Y (\Lambda^+, \Lambda^-)\geq K$ implies $\inf_{\sigma\in \text{AH}(M_f)}\{\ell_\sigma(\partial Y)\} \leq \epsilon$. Here $\ell_\sigma (\partial Y)$ denotes the total geodesic length of $\partial Y$ in $(M_f, \sigma)$, and the infimum is taken over all hyperbolic structures on $M_f$. This work produces the following: given a closed surface $\Sigma$, we provide a family of closed, fibered hyperbolic manifolds in which $\Sigma$ is totally geodesically embedded, (almost) transverse to the pseudo-Anosov flow, with arbitrarily small systole.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a klt projective variety with numerically trivial canonical divisor. A surjective endomorphism $f:X\to X$ is amplified (resp.~quasi-amplified) if $f^*D-D$ is ample (resp.~big) for some Cartier divisor $D$. We show that after iteration and equivariant birational contractions, an quasi-amplified endomorphism will descend to an amplified endomorphism. As an application, when $X$ is Hyperkähler, $f$ is quasi-amplified if and only if it is of positive entropy. In both cases, $f$ has Zariski dense periodic points. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we give and compare several cohomological and geometric criteria of amplified endomorphisms and endomorphisms with countable and Zariski dense periodic points (after an uncountable field extension).

Abstract:Bifurcations within holomorphic families of rational maps on the Riemann sphere are well understood since the works of Mañé-Sad-Sullivan and, independently, Lyubich in the eighties. Their techniques are however totally inoperant in a higher dimensional setting and one has therefore to adopt a different approach. For holomorphic families of endomorphisms on P this has been done in a joint work with Fabrizio Bianchi and Christophe Dupont. Our point of view on bifurcation phenomena combines ergodic and pluripotential-theoretic tools. In particular the Lyapunov exponents of the maximal entropy measure play an important role.
