Abstract:Hypoeutectic Al-Mg 2 Si alloys are distinguished as premier structural materials for transportation purposes, celebrated for their superior ductility and exceptional corrosion resistance. Enhancing strength and evaluating castability are critical for broadening their applicability. This study meticulously explores the influence of copper (Cu) on the mechanical attributes and castability of AlMg5.4Si2 alloys through detailed tensile testing and casting experiments utilizing constrained rod casting and spiral molds. Our findings reveal that increasing Cu levels refine grain size and condense the spacing of secondary dendrite arms, although this leads to a diminishing effect on the beneficial modifications introduced by bismuth (Bi). Specifically, the addition of 0.1 wt% Cu elevates the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength by 19 and 31 MPa, respectively. However, when Cu concentration exceeds 0.1 wt%, there is a marked degradation in mechanical properties due to the formation of the agglomerated S-Al 2 CuMg phase. Furthermore, the Cu enrichment escalates the hot tearing sensitivity and diminishes fluidity, predominantly due to an expanded freezing temperature range and an increased propensity for dendritization. The comparisons between experimental castability outcomes, numerical simulations and theoretical benchmarks have validated the predictive potential of these methodologies. These insights afford a nuanced comprehension of the multifaceted impacts of microalloying on the Al-Mg 2 Si cast alloys, and pave the way for compositional refinements in industrial practices. Critically, this research not only underscores the delicate balance required in alloy design, but also opens new pathways for enhancing the performance of transportation materials through strategic microalloying.
