Abstract:Over the past decades, much attention has been paid to develope novel approaches towards water treatment, in particular the membrane filtration, to deal with the severe environmental crisis. One of the research foci is the organic-inorganic composite membranes for their advantages from both polymers and inorganics. In this review, we focus on the composite porous membranes and outline the advances in this field. In recent years, numerous of methods have been developed to fabricate such membranes, including blending, in situ generation, surface modification, atomic layer deposition, and biomineralization. The membranes can be categorized into two models according to the distribution of inorganics in the membrane: the embedding model and enveloping model. In addition, we summarize the practical applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes in antifouling and anti-bacterial uses, oil/water separation, catalysis, absorption, battery separator and enzyme immobilization. We suggest the "enveloping model" a better choice to construct the novel organic-inorganic composite membranes with high performance for its high surface mineral coverage.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

This paper reviews the present status of research and development of porous separation membranes and perspectives of the future. Some new progresses of micro-filtration, ultra-filtration, nano-filtration and zeolite membranes are discussed. The emerging application of porous ceramics membranes in gas-solid separation was briefly reviewed.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic composite membranes are of great interest in modern water treatment processes because they offer potentially superior separation efficiency and advanced functionality by integrating the properties of polymers and inorganics. The biggest challenge in the fabrication and applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes is the incompatibility of organic-inorganic interfaces. In this minireview, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular engineering to tailor the properties of interfaces in composite membranes. Three typical models (i.e. mixed matrix models, interface composite models, and dual-layer composite models) are presented to demonstrate how to regulate these interfaces via molecular engineering and how the interfacial properties ultimately affect the membrane performance.

Abstract:The shortage of water resource has severely impacted on the development of social economy and the enhancement of the people living standard of our nation. Seawater desalination technology is one of the important means to solve current water resource deficient problem. Reverse osmosis membrane process has won the bid in international calling for tenders of seawater desalination, because its low capital invest, low energy consumption, low cost price and shorter construction period in recent years. On basis of a brief introduction of the development history of reverse osmosis membranes, this paper reviews the research progress of the functional materials of reverse osmosis composite membranes, with authors's work in preparation of the functional materials of reverse osmosis composite membranes referred. The possible topics of reverse osmosis membranes in the future investigation are discussed.
Organic-inorganic composite ultrafiltration membrane with anti-fouling and catalytic properties by in-situ co-casting for water treatment

Abstract:Organic-inorganic composite membranes have received much attention for superior water-treatment performance, where manipulating distribution of inorganic nanoparticles in membrane matrix remains a great challenge. Therefore, an in-situ co-casting was developed to modulate distribution of nanoparticles in membrane matrix for preparing multifunctional dual-layer manganese dioxide-polyvinylidene fluoride (MnO2-PVDF) composite ultrafiltration membrane. Results showed MnO2-PVDF membranes possessed apparent bi-layer structure and nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface and upper layer. Such a configuration improved hydrophilicity with a maximum pure water permeance of 1012.97 L/m2·h·bar and displayed excellent mechanical strength. From anti-fouling tests, 7.5 wt% MnO2-PVDF membrane presented the highest flux recovery of 83.2%, and low fouling propensity in either bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution or secondary effluent. The enhanced anti-fouling resulted from less attractive or even repulsive interactions between MnO2-PVDF membranes and foulants. Furthermore, the MnO2-PVDF membrane could accomplish ∼100.0% water flux recovery by a facile peroxymonosulfate (PMS) cleaning, following BSA fouling. Similarly, the catalytic capability of MnO2-PVDF membrane for PMS was evidenced through the removal of various organic pollutants. In long-term operation, the composite membrane displayed excellent stability and low Mn ion leaching. Our results provide a promising route for structural regulation and development of organic-inorganic composite membranes for water treatment.

Development status and prospect of inorganic ceramic membrane in China

Abstract:After more than ten years developments,inorganic ceramic membrane has been successfully adopted in medical,chemical,food and environmental industries,and became one of the rapidest developed materials with huge potentials in the high performance membranes area.This article presents national policies related to membrane industry in the " 12~(th) Five Year Plan" period,major domestic research institutions and manufactories,and analyses inorganic ceramic membrane s technology developments, application areas and potential markets.It suggests theoretical frame for ceramic membrane material researches shall integrate with parameter designs in processing industries,in order to further promote ceramic membranes application techniques.According to nationwide energy-saving and emission reduction purpose,base on advanced performances,inorganic ceramic membrane will play an important part in hash conditions of processing industries.Its value for integrated applications shall be further noticed,and will be adopted into more application areas,and bring unprecedented opportunities for ceramic membranes.

Abstract:The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:During the last 60 years,ion exchange membranes evolved from a laboratory tool to industrial products with significant technical and commercial impact.Today ion exchange membranes are receiving considerable attention and are successfully applied for desalination of sea and brackish water and for treating industrial effluents.Due to their superiority in selective transport of different ions,they are efficient tools for the concentration/ separation of food and pharmaceutical products containing ionic species and the manufacture of basis chemical products.The evolvement of an ion exchange membrane not only makes the process cleaner and more energy-efficient but also recovers useful effluents that are now going to wastes,and thus makes sustaining development of the society.In request to the current national policy on industries,this review focuses on the significant requirements in China and recent novel developments in the field of ion exchange membranes including preparations,applications and process integrations.The future developments are also prospected.

Abstract:The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Abstract:The classification of inorganic-organic hybrid materials was introduced. The main examples were polyoxometallate-organic hybrid materials. The important preparation methods of inorganic-organic hybrid materials including sol-gel, hydrothermal, blending and self assembly were reviewed. The excellent performances of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which possessed the advantages of both inorganic and organic materials were described. Their applications in fields of mechanics, electrics, optics, catalysis, biology and others were also briefly introduced. The future development and research trends of inorganic-organic hybrid materials were stated.

Preparation and applications of hybrid ion exchange membranes

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid ion exchange membranes have been developing into a fascinated new field of research since their emergence in 1980s, because of their potential applications in such fields as fuel cells, electrochemical analysis and sensing, electro-membrane separation, diffusion dialysis, etc. Based on the work of our research group, the recent development of the preparation and application technologies (especially during the latest 5 years) is reviewed in this paper. Preparation methods including sol-gel process, blending, in situ infiltration and precipitation are elaborated, and the applications in fuel cells, electrochemical analysis, sensing, electro-membrane separation, diffusion dialysis, microfiltration, nanofiltration and pervaporation are summarized. Finally, the brief summary and comments on their future development are prospected.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging porous materials with the characteristics of uniform metal center distribution and adjustable pore size. They have important applications in the fields of energy, environment, and catalysis. However, the practical application of MOFs is limited due to insolubility, brittleness, and hard processing. Shaping MOFs into a useful structure is an urgent need. In this review, the research progress in the fabrication of MOF membranes is introduced with emphasis on two paths: the preparation of pure MOF membranes and the incorporation of MOFs into polymer matrix. The classic and emerging principles to prepare pure MOF membranes and MOF/polymer hybrid membranes are summarized. Through the analysis of classic cases, the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation strategies and products are compared, to provide general knowledge for the needs of different application scenarios. Finally, the important role that the MOF membrane plays in the applications of separation, adsorption, and catalysis is highlighted. The opportunities and challenges of MOF membranes in this new era are also proposed. This review summarizes the developments on the synthesis methods for pure metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes and MOF/polymer hybrid membranes. Their applications in the energy and environmental fields are highlighted, and the limitations and challenges of the MOF membranes are also discussed.

Abstract:Membrane filtration is an effective water recycling and purification technology to remove various pollutants in water. Inorganic membrane filtration (IMF) technology has received widespread attention because of its unique high temperature and corrosion resistance. Commonly used inorganic membranes include ceramic membranes and carbon-based membranes. As novel catalytic inorganic membrane processes, IMF coupled with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), can realize the separation and in situ degradation of pollutants, thus mitigating membrane contamination. In this paper, the types and performance of IMF are discussed. The influencing factors of inorganic membranes in practical wastewater treatment are summarized. The applications, advantages, and disadvantages of the coupled process of IMF and AOPs are summarized and outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects of IMF and IMF coupled with AOPs are presented, respectively. This contributes to the design and development of coupled systems of membrane filtration with inorganic materials and IMF coupled with AOPs for practical wastewater treatment.
