Abstract:Organic-inorganic composite membranes are of great interest in modern water treatment processes because they offer potentially superior separation efficiency and advanced functionality by integrating the properties of polymers and inorganics. The biggest challenge in the fabrication and applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes is the incompatibility of organic-inorganic interfaces. In this minireview, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular engineering to tailor the properties of interfaces in composite membranes. Three typical models (i.e. mixed matrix models, interface composite models, and dual-layer composite models) are presented to demonstrate how to regulate these interfaces via molecular engineering and how the interfacial properties ultimately affect the membrane performance.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Over the past decades, much attention has been paid to develope novel approaches towards water treatment, in particular the membrane filtration, to deal with the severe environmental crisis. One of the research foci is the organic-inorganic composite membranes for their advantages from both polymers and inorganics. In this review, we focus on the composite porous membranes and outline the advances in this field. In recent years, numerous of methods have been developed to fabricate such membranes, including blending, in situ generation, surface modification, atomic layer deposition, and biomineralization. The membranes can be categorized into two models according to the distribution of inorganics in the membrane: the embedding model and enveloping model. In addition, we summarize the practical applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes in antifouling and anti-bacterial uses, oil/water separation, catalysis, absorption, battery separator and enzyme immobilization. We suggest the "enveloping model" a better choice to construct the novel organic-inorganic composite membranes with high performance for its high surface mineral coverage.

Abstract:Surface and interface engineering provides a powerful tool to tailor the structures and properties of polymer membranes, sharpening their applications in sustainable development. Tremendous progress has been achieved in this field over the past 20 years. In this Perspective, we overview the conventional and emerging strategies for membrane surface engineering and present the current trends in surface and interface engineering for both porous and thin-film composite membranes. For porous membranes, the rise of Janus membranes motivates the evolution from uniform functionalization to asymmetric performance construction. For thin-film composite membranes, the research foci are moving to the surface modification of substrates, the fabrication of nanostructured interlayers, and especially the regulation of interfacial polymerization.

Abstract:Superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces constitute a branch of surface chemistry involving the two extreme states of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity combined on the same surface in precise patterns. Such surfaces have many advantages, including controllable wettability, enrichment ability, accessibility, and the ability to manipulate and pattern water droplets, and they offer new functionalities and possibilities for a wide variety of emerging applications, such as microarrays, biomedical assays, microfluidics, and environmental protection. This review presents the basic theory, simplified fabrication, and emerging applications of superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces. First, the fundamental theories of wettability that explain the spreading of a droplet on a solid surface are described. Then, the fabrication methods for preparing superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces are introduced, and the emerging applications of such surfaces that are currently being explored are highlighted. Finally, the remaining challenges of constructing such surfaces and future applications that would benefit from their use are discussed.

Abstract:The field of organic electronics has been developed vastly in the past two decades due to its promise for low cost, lightweight, mechanical flexibility, versatility of chemical design and synthesis, and ease of processing. The performance and lifetime of these devices, such as organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), photovoltaics (OPVs), and field‐effect transistors (OFETs), are critically dependent on the properties of both active materials and their interfaces. Interfacial properties can be controlled ranging from simple wettability or adhesion between different materials to direct modifications of the electronic structure of the materials. In this Feature Article, the strategies of utilizing surfactant‐modified cathodes, hole‐transporting buffer layers, and self‐assembled monolayer (SAM)‐modified anodes are highlighted. In addition to enabling the production of high‐efficiency OLEDs, control of interfaces in both conventional and inverted polymer solar cells is shown to enhance their efficiency and stability; and the tailoring of source–drain electrode–semiconductor interfaces, dielectric–semiconductor interfaces, and ultrathin dielectrics is shown to allow for high‐performance OFETs.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging porous materials with the characteristics of uniform metal center distribution and adjustable pore size. They have important applications in the fields of energy, environment, and catalysis. However, the practical application of MOFs is limited due to insolubility, brittleness, and hard processing. Shaping MOFs into a useful structure is an urgent need. In this review, the research progress in the fabrication of MOF membranes is introduced with emphasis on two paths: the preparation of pure MOF membranes and the incorporation of MOFs into polymer matrix. The classic and emerging principles to prepare pure MOF membranes and MOF/polymer hybrid membranes are summarized. Through the analysis of classic cases, the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation strategies and products are compared, to provide general knowledge for the needs of different application scenarios. Finally, the important role that the MOF membrane plays in the applications of separation, adsorption, and catalysis is highlighted. The opportunities and challenges of MOF membranes in this new era are also proposed. This review summarizes the developments on the synthesis methods for pure metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes and MOF/polymer hybrid membranes. Their applications in the energy and environmental fields are highlighted, and the limitations and challenges of the MOF membranes are also discussed.

Abstract:<p>Due to the versatile structures and functionalities as well as good compatibility with polyamide (PA) matrix, organic nanomaterials are promising candidates as fascinating nanofillers in PA selective layer to improve separation efficiency of thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes, which consist of a nanomaterials-embedded PA layer and a porous support layer. This review specially focuses on the current development of organic nanomaterials based TFN membranes for various aqueous-/organic-based separation processes, as organic nanomaterials are effective in avoiding the non-selective defects caused by the poor interfacial compatibility between inorganic nanoadditives and PA matrix. The synthesis, modification and utilization of organic nanofillers for constructing state-of-the-art TFN membranes as well as the proposed transport mechanism are highlighted. Encouraging results have demonstrated that the embedded organic nanomaterials not only provide possibility in breaking the trade-off between membrane permeability and selectivity and improving antifouling performance, but also render membrane with attractive properties for targeted applications, such as antimicrobial performance and boron removal. Despite of the excellent properties imparted by functional organic nanomaterials, significant challenges still exist for in-depth study and scale-up of TFN membranes. Thus, this review also attempts to offer insights on future directions of advanced TFN membranes with organic-based nanomaterials.</p>

Abstract:Third generation solar cells including organic solar cells, perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention due to their advantages of low cost, solution processability and flexibility. The rapid progress in this field is attributed to the development of absorbing layers, interfacial materials or interfacial modification, device architectures and so on. Especially, the interfaces in the devices significantly affect the exciton dissociation, charge carrier transport and collection, and subsequently affect the device performance. This review focuses on the interface engineering in organic solar cells, polymer/nanocrystal hybrid solar cells and perovskite solar cells in our group. We summarize the strategies of designing effective interfacial materials including hole-transporting materials, electron-transporting materials and their modification to achieve ohmic contact at the interface of active layer and electrodes. A series of low-temperature solution processed low-cost inorganic materials and organic small molecules are developed. With appropriate energy levels, high mobility and low defect or ability to passivate perovskites, highly efficient organic and perovskite solar cells are achieved. Self-assembly monolayer technologies are also discussed here. It is an efficient way to modify the work function of electrodes to obtain ohmic contact between electrodes and active layer. On one hand, the self-assembly monolayer can also be used to passivate the defect of metal oxide buffer layer such as ZnO or TiO2 to reduce recombination, which may improve the morphology of perovskite film to enhance the performance. Plasmonic effect is introduced to enhance the light absorption of active layer by incorporating Au or Ag nanoparticles into the interface layers. At last, the optimized strategies for interface modification between polymer and nanocrystals to improve the exciton dissociation and charge transport are discussed in details. By attaching benzenedithiol ligands onto the surface of CdSe nanocrystals in the "face-on" geometry, the nanocrystal-nanocrystal or polymer-nanocrystal distance is minimized. Furthermore, the "electroactive" p-orbitals of the benzenedithiol can further enhance the electronic coupling, which facilitates charge carrier dissociation and transport. On the other hand, judicious choice of ligands with appropriate molecular dipoles has a strong impact on chemical and electronic structures at the polymer-nanocrystal interface and subsequently on photovoltaic device performance. With these strategies, highly efficient polymer/CdSe nanocrystal hybrid solar cells have been achieved. A few viewpoints on further developing interface engineering for high-performance solar cells are also provided.

The organic-aqueous interface determines the diffusion dynamics of monomers and the chemical environment for polymerization, exerting a critical influence on the formation of polymer thin films. This review summarizes recent advances in tailoring interfacial polymerization using interfaces beyond the conventional alkane-water interface to achieve high-performance separation films with designed structures. Diverse liquid-liquid interfaces are introduced for synthesizing separation films by adding co-solvents into the organic phase and/or the aqueous phase, respectively, or by replacing one of the liquid phases with other solvents. Innovative liquid-gel and liquid-gas interfaces are then summarized for the synthesis of polymer thin films for separation. Novel strategies to form reaction interfaces, such as spray-coating, are also presented and discussed. In addition, we discuss the details of how a physically or chemically patterned substrate affects interfacial polymerization. Finally, the potential of unconventional interfaces in interfacial polymerization is forecast with both challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Surfaces and interfaces are two key parameters to maneuver the performance of photocatalytic materials, particularly for hybrid structures, in various reaction systems. In this Focus Review, we highlight the recent progress on surface and interface engineering toward designing highly efficient photocatalysts, and elucidate the fundamental principles behind the designs. We first introduce the roles of surfaces and interfaces in different models of charge kinetics-a key process determining the quantum efficiency of photocatalysis-followed by the definitions of surface and inter-face in basic photocatalytic architectural structures. We then outline the design rules and important parameters for surface and interface engineering, respectively. As an interplay effect, the relationships between surface and interface parameters in photocatalyst design are also presented. We further summarize the synthetic methods for surface and interface control. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for photocatalysis research in terms of surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:Synthetic polymer membranes are widely used in many applications, including, among others, water purification, protein separation, and medicine. However, the use of existing polymer membranes faces major challenges, such as the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, membrane fouling, and poor mechanical strength. To address these problems the authors have focused their research on surface/interfacial tailoring and the structure-property relationship of polymer membranes used in liquid separation systems. Progress has been made as follows: (1) a methodology for membrane surface functionalization and nanofiltration (NF) membrane preparation based on mussel-inspired catecholic chemistry was proposed and established; (2) a class of mechanically robust and environmentally-responsive composite membranes with hydrogel pore-filled in rigid macroporous supports was designed and developed; (3) a methodology for surface tailoring and antifouling modification of polymer membranes based on amphiphilic copolymers was created and the scientific implications for amphiphilic polymer membranes elaborated; (4) an adsorption membrane with both filtration and adsorption functions was designed and developed to achieve rapid removal of trace micropollutants, including heavy metal ions, organic dyes, plasticizer, antibiotics, and others. This mini-review briefly summarizes this work.

Abstract:Janus membranes show great promise toward various applications and are undergoing a fast‐paced development in materials science. The asymmetric surface engineering on surface wettability, layer thickness, and pore structure enables Janus membranes with superiority in mass transport over conventional membranes. This review aims to provide an overview on the role of asymmetric surface engineering in membrane fabrication, structure control, and property tuning. The relationship between asymmetric surface engineering and performance optimization of Janus membranes is then elucidated based on an understanding of the underlying mass transport mechanism for target applications. Finally, current challenges in this field are highlighted, hopefully inspiring more researches to address the controllability and tunability of surface engineering for Janus membranes in future.

Abstract:The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:<p>Organic solar cells (OSCs) have drawn considerable attention in the last decade, owing to the great potential of light weight, flexibility, and low-cost solution processing. Especially, non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF–OSCs) have become a research hot spot due to their excellent power conversion efficiency. Interfacial engineering to facilitate charge transport and collection is crucial to achieve high efficiency of OSC. However, the interfacial engineering of NF–OSCs remains less understanding and systematically reviewed. This min-review provides a brief review of the recent developments in interfacial engineering for NF–OSCs with a special focus on the design and application of cathode/anode interface materials for NF–OSCs and interconnecting materials for non-fullerene organic tandem solar cells. This mini-review also provides useful guidance and challenge regarding interface materials for NF–OSCs.</p>
