Abstract:The forced high-frequency vertical vibrations of a rigid circular disk on a saturated poroelastic stratum supported by a rigid rock foundation are studied. An exact formulation is developed for the dual integral equations governing the mixed boundary-value problem of the vertical vibration. By finding an approximate solution to the exact governing dual integral equations, an evaluation of the amplitude response of the rigid disk is presented for the case of a frictionless contact both between the disk and the stratum and between the stratum and the foundation. The influences of parameters regarding the disk and the elastic stratum on the amplitude response of the disk are discussed. It is concluded that the amplitude response of the disk is dependent on the exciting frequency, the depth of the stratum, the Poison’s ratio of the solid skeleton, the porosity of the medium and the radius and mass of the disk.

Abstract:Self-excited vibration of a flexibly supported shafting system in a gravity water tunnel was investigated by experiment and numerical simulation. Vibration of the flexibly supported shafting system, such as the acceleration responses of the shaft and the dynamic reaction forces at the propeller support, were measured at different shaft speeds. Experimental results demonstrated that the self-excited vibration, characterized by a single-mode vibration modulated by the shaft speed, emerges as the shaft speed decreases in a speed range. To reveal the mechanism of the self-excited vibration, a fluid-structure coupling model was established. Simulation results show that the instable modes are associated with the rotational vibration modes of the flexible support, which can be easily excited by the circumferential friction, and the coupling between the vibration of the flexible support and the friction of the water-lubricated rubber bearing is the main factor leading to the vibration instability in the flexibly supported shafting system.

Abstract:Self-excited vibration of a flexibly supported shafting system in a gravity water tunnel was observed in the testing of friction of water-lubricated rubber bearings. The measured vibrations indicated that the self-excited vibration, characterized by a single-mode vibration modulated by the shaft speed, emerged at a specific speed and grew stronger as the shaft speed decreased, but it would cease at a very low-speed. To explain the mechanism of instability, a dynamic model of the system was built. The substructure synthesis method was employed to model the dynamics of the shafting system, which was divided into two subsystems: the flexible support and the shaft. Before the synthesis, natural frequencies and modes of the subsystems were computed by the finite element method. According to the modal parameters and connecting conditions, a synthesized model was built to take into account the friction between the shaft and the bearing. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the dynamic equations, and the influences of physical parameters on vibration stability were analyzed. The results have shown that certain vibration modes of the flexible support tend to be unstable under the excitation of the friction. Both the simulation and experimental results have exhibited that the unstable modes are associated with the torsional vibration of the flexible support, which are in fact lightly damped and accordingly can be easily excited by the circumferential friction. Therefore, the coupling between the torsional vibration of the flexible support and the friction of the water-lubricated rubber bearing is the main factor leading to the vibration instability.

Abstract:Friction-induced vibration is a phenomenon that has received extensive attention by the dynamics community. This is because of the important industrial relevance and the evolving development of new friction models. In this paper, the friction model we use was that developed by Popp and Stelter, and that is receiving increasing acceptance from the mechanics community. Using this model, the velocity of belt was selected as the bifurcation parameter and the fixed points and the stability of the fixed points were investigated as the parameter changes. It is found that the unstable Hopf bifurcation occurs. When the fixed point is unstable, self-excited oscillation arises. Moreover, for certain parameters, the numerical technique which allows not only to find the solutions for the freely chosen parameter sets but also to obtain their stability demonstrated the result of theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The parametrically excited lateral vibration of a mass-loaded string is investigated in this paper. Supposing that the mass at the lower end of the string is subjected to a vertical harmonic excitation and neglecting the higher-order vibration modes, the equation of motion for the mass-loaded string can be represented by a Mathieu's equation with cubic nonlinearity. Based on the stability criterion for Mathieu's equation, the critical conditions inducing parametric resonance are clarified. Theoretical analysis shows that when the natural frequency fs of the string lateral vibration and the vertical excitation frequency f satisfy fs= (n/2)f, n= 1, 2, 3, ..., parametric resonance occurs in the case of no damping. For a damped system, parametric resonance most likely occurs when f is close to 2fs, and depends on the damping of the system and the vertical excitation. The critical excitation has been derived at different frequencies. If the natural frequency of the mass vertical vibration happens to be twice that of the string lateral vibration, the parametric resonance may occur due to a small disturbance. Numerical simulations show that the lateral vibration of the string does not increase infinitely at parametric resonance because the parametric excitation is self-tuned due to the coupling between the vertical and lateral vibrations. Finally, the theoretical results are supported by some experimental work.

Abstract:The coupling between torsional vibration and nonlinear friction can induce a self-excited vibration in a propeller shaft system. In order to obtain the excitation mechanism and basic characteristics of the friction induced vibration,a nonlinear dynamic model of the friction induced self-excited torsional vibration was built. The dynamic friction characteristic was described with a Stribeck curve. The equations of motion were derived using Lagrangian approach in conjunction with the modal superposition method. Using the multi-scale method,the critical parameter condition and the basic law of the self-excited vibration were analyzed. The numerical integration method was used to compute the dynamic responses and the effects of the main physical parameters on the self-excited oscillation were studied. The study method and results provided a theoretical reference for structural design of propeller shaft systems.

Abstract:Self-excited vibration characteristics and its mechanism of a flexibly supported shafting system pIaced in a gravity water tunnel and excited by a friction force from water-lubricated rubber bearings were investigated.Test results indicated that the system's self-excited vibration appears at a specific rotating speed and remains unchanged with decrease in the shaft rotating speed,it disappears at a lower rotating speed due to inadequate driving force;the system's self excited vibration under a certain rotating speed reveals a single mode to be unstable under rotating speed modulation.To study self-excited vibration mechanism,the dynamic model of the system was built.In modeling,the system was divided into two substructures including a flexible support and a shaft to get their natural frequencies and modal shapes,respectively.According to compatible conditions and boundary conditions,a support-shaft coupled dynamic model under the action of a friction force on bearing interface was built,the mode superposition method was adopted to reduce orders of the model.The fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to numerically solve the dynamic equations.The influences of the main physical parameters on the system's vibration instability were analyzed.The test results agreed well with those of simulation.The results showed that the unstable mode is the support's weakly damped torsional vibration one;the interaction between support vibration and bearing friction force is the main reason to cause the system unstable.

Abstract:Friction-induced self-excited vibration in a propeller-shaft system supported by water-lubricated stern-tube bearing was studied. Nonlinear dynamic equations of the propeller-shaft system were formulated by using the Lagrange approach in conjunction with the modal superposition technique to exhibit the excitation mechanism. The model accounted for the lateral-torsional vibrations interaction of the shaft and the bearing-shaft friction represented by the velocity-dependent Stribeck friction model in the low velocity region. Dynamic analyses were carried out using the Newmark- β method with the Newton-Raphson iteration. Analytical and numerical investigations reveal that the instability induced by the negative friction damping gives a rise to the self-excited vibrations and the lateral-torsional vibrations interaction is a reasonable source to enhance the instability.

Abstract:The resonant responses of a self-excited system with time delay under weak harmonic excitations were explored. Existence of principal resonance, or frequency entrainment, or phase locking phenomenon, was examined by the well-known KBM asymptotic method. Principal resonance curves on amplitude-detuning parametric plane are obtained, which reveal that bistable principal resonance, together with associated vibration hysteresis, or jump phenomenon, may exist under certain conditions. This kind of vibration hysteresis resulting from saddle-node bifurcation often occurs in driven Duffing oscillator, but seldom occurs in driven van der Pol oscillator. The probabilities for occurrence of either one of the bistable principal resonances were discussed qualitatively. On the other hand, through qualitative analysis of limit cycles on the van der Pol plane by the Poincaré-Dulac theorems, the existence of a unique stable combined resonance, or a beat phenomenon, in the neighborhood outside the frequency entrainment band is confirmed. The above results clearly describe the various situations of forced vibrations in the system considered and deepen one's understanding of nonlinear phenomena.
Elasto-plastic friction modeling toward reconstructing measured bowed-string transients

Abstract:Physical modeling may be used to simulate the motion of a vibrating string under frictional excitation by a bow. This study compares the measured transient behavior of a bowed string with predictions from a physics-based simulation that assumes a finite-width bow, incorporates bow-hair compliance, considers the string's torsional motion, and utilizes an elasto-plastic friction model. The model is first evaluated by comparing simulated Guettler playability diagrams to a measured diagram obtained from a robot arm bowing a monochord. The playability regions are qualitatively similar, but some significant differences in the underlying waveforms are not captured. In order to improve the reconstructions of individual waveforms, inverse modeling is employed to derive parameter values for the elasto-plastic friction model, demonstrating the ability to generate accurate reconstructions of measured signal transients. The findings highlight the importance of accounting for variable friction coefficients that change with bow force and bow acceleration. This observation is consistent with prior research indicating that static and dynamic friction coefficients vary within a Guettler diagram.

Abstract:The vibration faults of aero-engine high-pressure compressor rotor blade were analyzed.The high-intensity sound waves contained in the high-strength noise generated by the compressor in a non-normal working condition one of the reasons for rotor blade excitation resonance or flutter.By theoretical analysis and experimental verification,the following conclusions were obtained: If the high stress caused by mechanical excitation and aerodynamic excitation and the superposition of the resonance stress caused by sound waves together affect the rotor blade,it can produce cracks and damages.

Abstract:To the underwater vehicle, its self-excited vibration induced by friction in the stern bearing is the non-ignorable component of the propeller vibration and noise. This paper describes how to solve the self-excited vibration, and discuss the effects on the self-excited vibration and its stick-slip phenomenon. After making the analysis about the supporting characteristics between shaft and hull substructures, this paper takes the shaft-hull coupled system as the analysis object, and constructs the FEM (Finite Element Method) model of the system. Based on the FEM model validated by the experiment, the required modal frequencies and the shapes of the shaft and the hull are calculated. Then, the friction force between shaft and water-lubricated rubber bearing is calculated, according to the Stribeck friction curve. Hereafter, through the friction force, the modal shapes of the shaft and the hull are combined to establish the nonlinear differential governing equations of the shaft-hull coupled system, by employing the modal synthesis method of substructures. Subsequently, the self-excited vibration responses induced by the friction can be obtained by solving the nonlinear differential governing equations, by Runge-Kutta method. On this basis, the discussions about the effects of friction coefficient, damping ratio, rotation speed and support stiffness on the self-excited vibration of the shaft-hull coupled system are conducted. The results show that the larger the damping is, or the faster the rotation of shaft is, or the stronger the supporting stiffness is, the more difficultly the shaft-hull coupled system's self-excited vibration will happen. The works on how to solve the self-excited vibration induced by friction in the stern bearing will be of great significance to accurately predict the propeller vibration and noise and optimize the acoustic design of the underwater vehicle.
Study on Vibration of Dragon Wash Basin and Free Surface Waves Inside

Abstract:We conducted experimental and numerical studies on the vibrating modes of a dragon wash basin (DWB) and the free surface waves inside the DWB. Both the vibration of the DWB and the sound produced were studied carefully. It was found that the DWB can be excited at different intrinsic modes under different excitation, including striking and rubbing it fast/slowly. However, with gentle rubbing, the DWB will be excited mainly at the first vibrating mode. We showed that the concave side wall of a DWB decreases the intrinsic frequencies (compared with a straight side wall), and the ears of a DWB lead to breaking of the vibrating-axisymmetry and cause the separation of modes I/II and IV/V as well. A theoretical model, in which the water is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, is applied to the first order vibration and predicts the relation of vibrating frequency versus water depth in the system. The measurement shows that both the radial and azimuthal waves are produced as DWB is working. The frequency of the first component of the surface wave is twice as large as the second one induced by non-linear effects. For both the radial and azimuthal waves, the dispersion relation is presented in the framework of capillary wave theory.

Abstract:The Guzheng string vibration was simplified into a bounded string vibration,and the vibrations during plucking and sweeping strings were dynamically analysed.A dynamic model of the process that the string vibration passes from the bridge to the Guzheng panel was built.The accuracy of the model proposed was verified through the comparison between the numerical results by using the Matlab simulation and the experimental data.The work of this paper provides a reliable theoretical model for the analysis of the string vibration and the bridge transmission process.The simplification of the structural model in analyzing the Guzheng vibro-acoustic characteristics was achieved and it will provide more or less support and guidance for the improvement of future Guzhengs.

Measurement and Analysis of the Vibration Responses of Piano Soundboards with Different Structures

Abstract:The effect of structure on the vibration response was explored for four piano soundboards with different but commonly adopted structures. The vibration response was obtained using the free-vibration method, and the values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-vibration frequency method (EF and GF) were compared with the dynamic modulus of elasticity obtained using the Euler beam method (EE) and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-plate torsional vibration method (GT), respectively. It was found that the soundboards with different structures had different vibration modes and that excitation at different locations highlighted different vibration modes. For all the soundboards analyzed, the EE and GT were higher than EF and GF by 2.2% and 24.3%, respectively. However, the trends of the results of these methods were the same. The four piano soundboards with different structures possessed varying dynamic moduli of elasticity and dynamic shear moduli. These rules are consistent with the grain directions of the soundboards and the anisotropy of the wood (the direction of the units of the soundboards). The results show that the vibration mode of the piano soundboard is complex. The dynamic elastic modulus of the soundboard can be calculated using the Euler beam method. The results provide a reference for studies on the vibration response, material selection, production technology, and testing of piano soundboards.
Self-excited vibration analysis for wheel/rail lateral contact system

Abstract:To study the influence of self-excited vibration on the curve squeal noise in the wheel/rail contact,the dynamical equation for 1-DOF wheel/rail lateral contact system is derived.A new friction coefficient model based on De Beer model is adopted to calculate the friction force in the wheel/rail contact surface.The influence of kinetic and static friction coefficients as well as the lateral creepage on the stability of self-excited vibration system is investigated.The calculation results show that wheel＇s inherent modes will be excited by the unstable self-excited vibration.If the structural damping of wheel/rail contact system is larger than the equivalent damping of the friction force,or the value of lateral creepage is less than 0.0024,the self-excited vibration system will be stable,and thus the curve squeal noise can be restrained.

Abstract:After discussing the relationship between taper and camber typically used by bowmakers, energy methods are then employed to develop nonlinear boundary value problems describing both the hair tightening problem and static deflection analysis of the violin bow under playing loads, including an analysis of possible hair tension asymmetry by employing a linear springs in series model of the hair. A simple algebraic condition for the distance the frog travels in reaching maximum tension is also presented. Boundary value problems are then applied using tools in scilab, comparing the idealized Tourte taper exhibiting a linear stiffness profile and an alternative design with a significantly different profile, revealing small differences in their behavior under static playing loads and validating previously observed significant increase in hair tension when approaching the tip. While the difference in vertical hair deflection as a function of bow position is extremely small, the Tourte design exhibits somewhat more compliance in the stick when approaching the tip, possibly desirable by players given increasing hair tension. An interesting small loss of hair tension in the lower section of the bow stroke is also discussed, representing additional slight differences in the initial compliance felt by the player when engaging the strings.
