Abstract:Plato advanced the question of what is beauty firstly in his works,which commences the history of seeking the beauty's nature in the West.But the nature of beauty ceases to be an issue to Heidegger.That is to say,the beauty creating and showing by itself,and the beauty's basis is the beauty itself,but not regulated by others.The fundamentality character of the traditional west aesthetics is reasen,and the modern aesthetics'starting point is Being.Heidegger's phenomenology aesthetics promotes the development of modern aesthetics effectively in the opposing and exceeding to the tradition.

Abstract:From the 1990s, with deeper influence of modernity, Chinese aesthetic research often regards aesthetics as the activity full of pure individuality, which transcends or gives priority to sociality. However,this understanding misunderstands modernity,and this understanding also sees both individuality and sociality, which seems fixed and divisive each other, as the preexistent things. Hence this understanding also insists on metaphysical standpoint.To clear up the long time controversy of this significant aesthetic problem, this paper is based on Practice-ontology aesthetics and the purpose of transcending metaphysics, and points that aesthetics is generative oneness of individuality and sociality. Marx and Heidegger left important thinking clues. What's more,the actual aesthetic activities prove this nature.
Aesthetics: from Narrow Sense to Broad Sense

Abstract:Aesthetics is just defined as the definition of art after the influence of analytic philosophy. Aesthetics in narrow sense makes itself isolated from social life and art practice. In order to get rid of this state, some contemporary western aestheticians look back to Alexander Baumgarten and his original definition of aesthetics. According to Baumgarten, aesthetics should cover all of the aesthetic life. Some aestheticians even advocate it can be further regarded as the fundament of philosophy. This inclining of aesthetics in broad sense can be found in Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, which is very famous in the beginning of the modernization process of Chinese aesthetics. This comparative study between Cai Yuan-Pei and Baumgarten is not only helpful to re-understand Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, but also useful for Chinese aestheticians to find the direction of future aesthetics.

Abstract:Adorno' s criticism of phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger is essentially a dialogue between freedom and truth,whereas as a conscientious consciousness of non - identity,negative dialectics signifies different approaches to their directions of truth and freedom in the conflict between the critical theory and Heidegger' s phenomenology.No excuses or reasons for criticisms of principls and standpoints should be resorted to Adorno' s criticism of phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger, which should be made a turning point at which such questions as how to develop contemporary aesthetics in China are to be reflected.

Abstract:Aesthetic transcendence is a problem that the Chinese literary theory and aesthetics are facing in the 21th century.The peculiar nature of aesthetic transcendence lies in the realization of inner freedom in one's life.Cultural studies are only complement and improvement to the conception and methods of traditional literary studies,therefore can not take the place of aesthetic transcendence,but rather,takes it as its ultimate pursuit.Aesthetic transcendence is an organic unity between individuality and sociality in the sense of becoming,for which modern artistic activity like surrealism has provided a convincing evidence.The aesthetic can only transcend the reasonable,but can not transcend reason manifested in the protective forces of existence,thus realizing the organic unity between sensibility and reason through consciousness that transcends its temporary relief to itself,through individual consciousness that transcends universal consciousness,and through man's changing nature that transcends the nature of general freedom.

Abstract:A metaphysics of aesthetics aims for an understanding of the meaning of life and a pursuit of spiritual liberty, an idyllic state where truth, goodness and beauty are in harmony.It is a special form of man′s ultimate concerns.There are three thought paths in a metaphysics of aesthetics in the tradition of eastern and western aesthetic wisdom, namely, external transcendence, internal transcendence and transcendence of the here and now.Religion is the supreme cultural form of im-mortality and spiritual transcendence.Modern Chinese metaphysics of aesthetics manifests a tension between new and old el-ements characteristic of a transitional period in society and culture.

Abstract:In the last century, many Asian scholars often discussed various aesthetic questions chiefly according to the model of the Western tradition, because it has been generally thought as the birthplace and the nursery of aesthetics itself as a science'. In fact, however, Asian countries do have their own aesthetic traditions rather different from the Western one. This essay will try to present a striking contrast between traditional Chinese and Western aesthetics and thereby show the worldwide significance of Chinese aesthetic tradition in the 21st century. Viewed from the perspective of Chinese aesthetics, beauty is not only of the aesthetic significance in the relation of human being to beautiful things and artworks, but also of the metaphysical significance in human life as a whole, and human being is not only the creator of beautiful things and artworks, but also the creator of her/his own beautiful existence. Indeed, one can both create beautiful things and artworks as aesthetic objects in the external world and feel aesthetic pleasure in the inner world through aesthetic activities only when one's own existence itself becomes beautiful in the metaphysical sense. The insight would definitely enlarge the horizon of the aesthetics of the 21st century and enrich its research contents, and even lift it to the metaphysical level of human existence and make it go beyond the limits of traditional Western aesthetics. Moreover, in consideration of the beautiful as one of the highest states of human life, the aesthetics of the 21st century would make much greater contributions to humankind as well when it tries to reveal the ways in which one is able to beautify one's existence itself in the metaphysical sense.

Abstract:One of the most significant breakthroughs of China's contemporary aesthetics is to transcend epistemology and approach ontology.Ecological aesthetics is no exception.Ecological aesthetics,not considered as a discipline but as an important dimension of aesthetic research,aims at harmony and coordination as its ultimate goal when confronted with the relationship between man and nature,hence an ontological philosophical foundation is inevitable.Marx considers practice and ontology not contrasting but totally consistent.Based on Marx's practical materialism or materialist outlook on history,critically absorbing Heidegger's valuable points on being,we attempt to expound the connotation of ontology which Marx fails to further illustrate,bringing into full play and enrichment Marxist outlook on practice.As a tentative research and attempt,it will not lead astray Marx's materialist outlook on history or add a Heidegger flavor to Marxism,conversely,it will bring about a restoration and extension of ontology inherent in Marx's materialist perspective on history.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:In 1926, Chen Wangdao published Introduction to Aesthetics which was an important achievement in the initiative period of modern Chinese Aesthetics, and paved the way for Chen’s debate with Pan Jiao focusing on the and particular characteristics of in 1927. In this book, Chen postulated aesthetic perception instead of nature of beauty as the main point of research within a theoretic frame which is common to Chinese aesthetics in the 1920s, and his constructive speculation of aesthetics as a descriptive science instead of philosophy is consistent with the approach of Marxist aesthetics. Both Chen’s book and his debate with Pan are still instructive to contemporary aesthetic research and many of his theoretical contributions remain to be uncovered.

Abstract:As a vague and ambiguous concept, modernity presents various characters in different fields. As an inseparable aspect of modernity, the aesthetic self-awareness pursues modernity as emancipation of sensation rather than cult of rationality as can be seen in the Enlightenment. While the aestheticist for art's sake helps to clarify the modern understanding of artistic liberty, the establishment of aesthetics proves to be an aesthetic self-awareness and the modernist art based on for art's sake turns to be an artistic self-awareness.

Abstract:Modern aesthetics regards objecting metaphysics as its major task, and forms two thought tradition: Intuitionism and Hermeneutics. The former wants to overcome the contradiction between subject and object through clearing up the preconceived idea of the subject, while the latter through hermeneutic circle. However, all of these efforts are denied by postmodern aesthetics, for the latter thinks that western thought could not surpass metaphysics thoroughly because western languages are alphabetic writings. In my opinion, the key to surpassing metaphysics is to abandoning logocentrism of language. From this angle, the language of literature and art itself has the power of surpassing metaphysics.

Abstract:In Chinese and Western aesthetics,there are different views about the presence and the absence in art.In Chinese aesthetics the absence is advocated while in Western aesthetics the presence is advocated.Though Plato and the Renaissance masters were totally different in their judgments for art,their criteria of judgment were almost the same.Plato depreciated art due to its absence,while the Renaissance masters appreciated art due to its presence.But in Chinese aesthetics art is appreciated due to its absence rather than its presence,and so it is different from both Plato and the Renaissance masters.In Chinese aesthetics,the appeal of art lies in its capacity for the spiritual transfiguration of the real or actual things instead of their representation.20th-century Western aestheticians have come to see the important role the absence plays in art,but their concept of the absence is quite different from that their Chinese counterparts hold.The former understands the absence as"an atmosphere of theory"which consists of systematic knowledge of art theory,history,and criticism;whereas the latter understands it as an internal self-understanding on which the ordinary life is hopefully transfigured into a work of art.

Abstract:Today, modern aesthetics itself has become the victim of the art-praxis rebellion, which indicates the end of modern aesthetics, whereas no contemporary aesthetic theory has yet opened a new road but sunk into a crisis. Now the discriminating mark between art and not-art has been marred both theoretically and practically. Therefore we must go back to the starting-point of modern aesthetics, i.e., Kant's aesthetics, to make clear the origin of the crisis. The concept of the imaginative faculty, presented by Kant, surpasses the boundary of his rationalist aesthetics. This reveals the difficulty of getting over the substantialization of beauty. The only exit of this predicament lies in overcoming the rational metaphysics and entering the existential vision of the contemporary ontology, which will lead to the demonstration of the existential essence of art, beauty and truth.

How to grasp the function of contem- porary aesthetic culture and its ways of practising is a complex problem worth attaching importance to,because both creator and appreciater's sense of role have changed subtly,market tendency of aesthetic culture is increasingly clear,and the populace colour of aesthetic culture activities is strong gradually. To gain aesthetic depth,improve artistic taste,and adjust relations between amusement and development,we should pay attention to recreational and communicational functions of aesthetic culture on reality level,emotion- experiencing and character- promoting functions on transcendence lev- el;we should adjustrelations between creation and appreciation,production and consumption and we should make double subjects'construction machanism,regulate relations between adaptation and sub- jugation.
