Abstract:To produce next generation flexible electronics, a lot of effort has been made to develop organic photovoltaic textiles that may deform in three dimensions and that are also breathable from fiber-shaped polymer solar cells where the cathode and anode fibers are twisted together. However, a desired organic photovoltaic textile has not been realized at an applicable size, because it is challenging or even impossible to effectively connect a large amount of twisted fiber electrodes in it. Herein, through the design of an interlaced structure of cathode and anode fibers, we have realized expected organic photovoltaic textiles at the applicable scale of meters for the first time using an industrial loom. This novel structure has successfully integrated the device fabrication, textile weaving and circuit connection all in one process, which significantly enhances the performance of the organic photovoltaic textiles and facilitates their commercialization. The polymer solar cell textiles were thin, lightweight and flexible with high working stability, and were very close to materials used for daily clothes, affording them potential in a variety of emerging new application fields such as wearable electronics, biomedical electronics and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:AbstractAn all‐solid‐state, lightweight, flexible, and wearable polymer solar cell (PSC) textile with reasonable photovoltaic performance has been developed. A metal textile electrode made from micrometer‐sized metal wires is used as the cathode, and the surfaces of the metal wires are dip‐coated with the photoactive layers. Two ultrathin, transparent, and aligned carbon nanotube sheets that exhibit remarkable electronic and mechanical properties were coated onto the modified metal textile at both sides as the anode to produce the desired PSC textile. Because of the designed sandwich structure, the PSC textile displays the same energy conversion efficiencies regardless of which side it is irradiated from. As expected, the PSC textiles are highly flexible, and their energy conversion efficiencies varied by less than 3 % after bending for more than 200 cycles. The PSC textile shows an areal density (5.9 mg cm−2) that is lower than that of flexible film‐based PSCs (31.3 mg cm−2).

Abstract:We present a strategy to fabricate polymer solar cells in inverted geometry by self-organization of alcohol soluble cathode interfacial materials in donor-acceptor bulk heterojunction blends. An amine-based fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl)(methyl)amino)ethyl ester (PCBDAN) is used as an additive in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and 6,6-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend to give a power conversion efficiency of 3.7% based on devices ITO/P3HT:PCBM:PCBDAN/MoO3/Ag where the ITO alone is used as the cathode. A vertical phase separation in favor of the inverted device architecture is formed: PCBDAN is rich on buried ITO surface reducing its work function, while P3HT is rich on air interface with the hole-collecting electrode. The driving force of the vertical phase separation is ascribed to the surface energy and its components of the blend compositions and the substrates. Similar results are also found with another typical alcohol soluble cathode interfacial materials, poly[(9,9-bis(3'-(N, N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN), implying that self-organization may be a general phenomenon in ternary blends. This self-organization procedure could eliminate the fabrication of printing thin film of interlayers or printing on such thin interlayers and would have potential application for roll-to-roll processing of polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Novel wire-shaped polymer solar cells that have high performance are developed by introducing a thin layer of titania nanoparticles that increases the charge separation and transport and an aligned carbon nanotube fiber electrode that increases their stability. Abstract:An all-solid-state, coaxial and self-powered "energy fiber" is demonstrated that simultaneously converts solar energy to electric energy and further stores it. The "energy fiber" is flexible and can be scaled up for the practical application by the well-developed textile technology, and may open a new avenue to future photoelectronics and electronics.

Abstract:Hybrid conjugated polymer/fullerene filaments based on MEH-PPV/PVP/PCBM are prepared by electrospinning, and their properties assessed by scanning electron, atomic and lateral force, tunnelling, and confocal microscopy, as well as by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence quantum yield and spatially-resolved fluorescence. Highlighted features include ribbon-shape of the realized fibers, and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in this way in terms of homogeneous charge transport behavior and formation of effective interfaces for diffusion and dissociation of photogenerated excitons. The interaction of the organic filaments with light, exhibiting specific light-scattering properties of the nanofibrous mat, might also contribute to spreading incident radiation across the active layers, thus potentially enhancing photovoltaic performance. This method might be applied to other electron donor-electron acceptor material systems for the fabrication of solar cell devices enhanced by nanofibrillar morphologies embedding conjugated polymers and fullerene compounds.

Abstract:Most previous fiber-shaped solar cells were based on photoelectrochemical systems involving liquid electrolytes, which had issues such as device encapsulation and stability. Here, we deposited classical semiconducting polymer-based bulk heterojunction layers onto stainless steel wires to form primary electrodes and adopted carbon nanotube thin films or densified yarns to replace conventional metal counter electrodes. The polymer-based fiber cells with nanotube film or yarn electrodes showed power conversion efficiencies in the range 1.4% to 2.3%, with stable performance upon rotation and large-angle bending and during long-time storage without further encapsulation. Our fiber solar cells consisting of a polymeric active layer sandwiched between steel and carbon electrodes have potential in the manufacturing of low-cost, liquid-free, and flexible fiber-based photovoltaics.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have triggered a rapid development of new photovoltaic devices because of high energy conversion efficiencies and their all-solid-state structures. To this end, they are particularly useful for various wearable and portable electronic devices. Perovskite solar cells with a flexible fiber structure were now prepared for the first time by continuously winding an aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube sheet electrode onto a fiber electrode; photoactive perovskite materials were incorporated in between them through a solution process. The fiber-shaped perovskite solar cell exhibits an energy conversion efficiency of 3.3%, which remained stable on bending. The perovskite solar cell fibers may be woven into electronic textiles for large-scale application by well-developed textile technologies.

Abstract:Flexible solar cells are one of the most significant power sources for modern on-body electronics devices. Recently, fiber-type or fabric-type photovoltaic devices have attracted increasing attentions. Compared with conventional solar cell with planar structure, solar cells with fiber or fabric structure have shown remarkable flexibility and deformability for weaving into almost any shape and assembling with any portable electronic equipment as a sustainable power supply. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress of wearable fiber-type and fabric-type solar cells as well as its applications in hybrid energy textiles. For solar cells of dye-sensitized type, organic type and perovskite type, the discussion involves working mechanism, structural design, material selection, preparation technology and potential applications. In addition, challenges and technical difficulties that may hinder its large-scale commercial application are also summarized and discussed. It is hoped that, this review will be of help for future researches on textile-type energy devices, to finally make it an everyday lifestyle in a near future.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have been widely studied due to the advantages of easy fabrication, low cost, light weight, good flexibility and sufficient transparency. In this work, flexible and semitransparent OSCs were successfully fabricated with the adoption of both polyimide/silver nanowires (PI/AgNW) and a conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS named PH1000 as the transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs). It is demonstrated that PI/AgNW is more suitable as a cathode rather than an anode in the viewpoint of its work function, photovoltaic performance, and simulations of optical properties. It is also found that the light incidence from PH1000 TCE can produce more plasmonic-enhanced photon absorption than the PI/AgNW electrode does, resulting in more high power conversion efficiency. Moreover, a high light transmittance of 33.8% and a decent efficiency of 3.88% are achieved for the whole all-flexible semitransparent device with only 9% decrease of resistance in PI/AgNW after 3000 bending cycles. This work illustrates that PI/AgNW has great potential and bright prospect in large-area OSC applications in the future.

Abstract:<p>Morphological stability is crucially important for the long‐term stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Many high‐efficiency PSCs suffer from metastable morphology, resulting in severe device degradation. Here, a series of copolymers is developed by manipulating the content of chlorinated benzodithiophene‐4,8‐dione (T1‐Cl) via a random copolymerization approach. It is found that all the copolymers can self‐assemble into a fibril nanostructure in films. By altering the T1‐Cl content, the polymer crystallinity and fibril width can be effectively controlled. When blended with several nonfullerene acceptors, such as TTPTT‐4F, O‐INIC3, EH‐INIC3, and Y6, the optimized fibril interpenetrating morphology can not only favor charge transport, but also inhibit the unfavorable molecular diffusion and aggregation in active layers, leading to excellent morphological stability. The work demonstrates the importance of optimization of fibril network morphology in realizing high‐efficiency and ambient‐stable PSCs, and also provides new insights into the effect of chemical structure on the fibril network morphology and photovoltaic performance of PSCs.</p>

Abstract:Hybrid halide perovskites have made significant progress in achievably high photoconversion efficiencies (> 25%) and stability as a function of their chemical engineering realized by isomorphous substitution at all three sites in AMX3 composition. Whereas the focus of current research lies on planar (2D) devices, this work brings forth an innovative structural engineering concept based on direct electrospinning of the three major perovskite solar cell components namely photoabsorber, hole- and electron- transport materials as continuous single triaxial fibers of µm radial dimensions (< 5 µm). These perovskite fibers lay the foundation of materials engineering for fabricating tiny solar cells, which can either be woven into fabrics or incorporated as single fibers to power wearables and a variety of devices or sensors, forming the internet of things. The structures of the here presented coaxial CuSCN/MAPbI3 (MA=CH3NH3+) and triaxial CuSCN/MAPbI3/ZnO-Zn(OAc)2 composite fibers were verified by X-ray diffraction data and electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy and cross-sectional analysis with focussed ion beam. This work demonstrates the first report where the entire PV device and material configuration is achieved as concentric axial cables fabricated via single-step electrospinning process.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Currently, fiber-shaped solar cells are materialized in two types of solar cells, the polymer solar cell (PSC) and the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC), whose structures are technically feasible for transforming into one-dimensional configuration. In this chapter, we discuss the polymer solar cell first including its developing history and working mechanisms. It is widely acknowledged that the electrode plays a pivotal role in the performance of solar cells. On this account, we proceed from remolding different materials into fiber shape as electrodes and shed light on their impact on flexibility, stability, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the polymer solar cell. Moreover, we present our attempts towards application pertaining to wearable devices. Specifically, we fabricated the stretchable polymer solar cells and integrated the solar cell with supercapacitors, which is discussed in detail in this chapter.

Abstract:Recently, polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on low bandgap thienothiophene-benzodithiophene copolymer have exhibited rapidly raised efficiency, but light soaking phenomena has caused a great impact on device performance. Herein, Al3+ was introduced between indium tin oxides (ITO) electrode and poly[(9,9-bis(3 '-(N,Ndimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) electron extraction layer of PSCs. The incorporated Al3+ could not only effectively fill the defects on the surface of ITO, but also decrease electron transport barrier, which facilitates charge transfer and increases the dissociation of photogenerated excitons. As a consequence, the optimal buffer layer improves the photoconductivity response and suppresses the photocurrent hysteresis phenomena.

Abstract:Bilayer polymer anode composed of poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) (PH500) and PEDOT:PSS (Baytron P VP Al 4083) was used to construct flexible polymer solar cells on plastic substrates polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a device structure of PET/polymer anode/APFO-3:PCBM/LiF/Al. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the indium tin oxide (ITO)-free solar cells achieved 2.2% under illumination of AM1.5 (100 mW cm(-2)), which is 80% of the PCE of the reference cells with ITO on glass. The simplicity of preparing bilayer polymer anode and the comparable performance achieved in the flexible solar cells made the bilayer polymer anode an alternative to ITO for flexible solar cells produced by printing technology. A Facile Approach to Fabricate High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells with an Annealing-Free and Simple Device of Three Layers

Abstract:With the rapid development of polymer solar cells research, "annealing-free" and simplifying the device structure become the main problems of commercialization of polymer solar cells (PSCs). To resolve these challenges, a novel, facile approach to develop favorably vertical separation in poly(3-hexylthiophene):(6,6)-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester : 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8,-tetracyano-quinodimethane (P3HT:PC61BM:F4TCNQ) ternary blend through the interaction between P3HT and F4TCNQ has been demonstrated, consequently high efficient PSCs only with three layers realized. Driven by the low surface energy of F4TCNQ, a spontaneously P3HT-F4TCNQ layer was enriched on the surface of active layer. The device can escape the annealing treatment and interfacial modification due to the well-defined vertical separation and favorable work function gradient in the activelayer. As a result, without thermal annealing and additional interlayer, PSCs only with three layers based on the ternary blend obtain a PCE of up to 4.1%. It also demonstrates good adaptation for all solution processed and flexible method. This simple device structure and "annealing-free" method of efficient polymer solar cells provide an opportunity for large-scale commercial production in the near future.

Abstract:Solid additive engineering has been intensively explored on morphology tuning for highly efficient all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), a promising photovoltaic technology towards multi-scenario application. Although the nano-fibrillar network of the active layer induced by additive treatment is confirmed as the key factor for power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all-PSCs, its formation mechanism is not clearly revealed, for lack of precise and convincing real-time observation of crystallization and phase separation during the liquid-to-solid transition process of spin-coating. Herein we report an in-situ grazing incidence wide-angle/small-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS/GISAXS) screening that reveals the fact that naphthalene derived solid additives can suppress the aggregation of the polymer acceptor (PY-IT) at the beginning stage of spin coating, which provides sufficient time and space for the polymer donor (PM6) to form the fibril structure. Moreover, guided by this knowledge, a ternary all-polymer system is proposed, which achieves cutting-edge level PCEs for both small-area (0.04 cm 2 ) (also decent operational stability) and large-area (1 cm 2 ) devices.

Abstract:In this paper, foldable polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated on woven fabrics by a free-standing, wet transfer method. A new concept of 'water-borne PSCs' was proposed to show the ultra-stability of organic photoactive materials under extremely humid conditions and even in water. There were a series of particular designs in the fabrication process: (1) flexible conductive woven fabrics were fabricated by polymer-assisted metal deposition; (2) a free-standing, wet transfer method was applied to laminate an active layer and a top electrode onto the as-prepared fabric electrodes simultaneously; (3) an interface modification layer was formed by diffusing a dilute polymer solution through fibers. The best device performances were achieved for the PSC on fabric A with a power conversion efficiency almost equal to those of the conventional devices using the same active materials, which would enrich wearable electronics by utilizing more comfortable and flexible un-modified woven fabrics.

Abstract:Highly efficient and cost-effective polymer solar cells (PSCs) fabricated on textured fluorine doped transparent conductive (FTO) electrodes are achieved. Such electrodes with rough surface in combination with reflective back contacts provide efficient light-trapping by light scattering and multiple reflections to increase the path length of the light. Due to the increased light absorption in active layer, the resultant PSCs base on polymer:fullerene system show 10% and 8% improvement in short current density and efficiency, respectively, compared with the reference cell based on the flat electrodes.

Abstract:A novel crosslinkable amino-functionalized conjugated polymer PFN-V is used as the cathode interlayer for high performance polymer solar cells, as reported by Lei Ying, Fei Huang, and co-workers in article number 1502563. The film can be rapidly crosslinked by UV-curing within 5 s in a nearly quantitative yield based on "thiol-ene" click reaction. This time- and labor-saving strategy may have practical applications in high throughput industrial production.
