Abstract:High-quality Dy3+ doped GdScO3 (Dy:GdScO3) single crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method for the first time. The lattice parameters of the as-grown crystal were obtained by Rietveld refinement to its XRD patterns. The effective segregation coefficient of Dy3+ is calculated to be 0.68. The spectroscopic characteristics of Dy:GdScO3 are investigated, with special attention to the yellow emission that could be pumped directly by the rapidly developed blue GaN LD. The absorption cross section of Dy:GdScO3 at 453 nm is 1.8 × 10–21 cm2 and the FWHM of this absorption band is about 9 nm at 300 K. Meanwhile, Dy:GdScO3 exhibits strong yellow emission at 577 nm corresponding to the transition 4F9/2→6H13/2 with stimulated emission cross section of 4.1 × 10–21 cm2. The relatively long fluorescence lifetime (459 μs) and high radiative quantum efficiency of the 4F9/2 level indicate a high laser efficiency of Dy:GdScO3 crystal. All results suggest that Dy:GdScO3 crystal could be a promising candidate for yellow laser at 577 nm pumped by blue GaN LD.

Abstract:A new laser crystal Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3TaO4 (Nd:GYTO) with high quality was grown by Czochralski method. The physical properties, including temperature dependent density, specific heat, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity, were systematically characterized. The maximum absorption cross section at 809 nm and the stimulated emission cross section at 1066.6 nm are 6.886 x 10(-20) cm(2) and 22 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The fluorescence lifetime is measured to be 182.4 mu s. Up to 2.37 W of continuous wave (CW) laser operating at 1066.5 nm has been successfully realized, corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 36.5% and a slope efficiency of 38%. Compared with Nd:GdTaO4, Nd:GYTO shows an enhancement of the laser performance. These results demonstrate that Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3TaO4 is a novel laser crystal with low symmetry and has great potential as low to moderate power lasers. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A mixed laser crystal of Nd-doped GYNO crystal was grown successfully by Czochralski method. The crystal belongs to monoclinic system with space group I2/a, the structural parameters are obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The defects and dislocations along three crystallographic orientations were studied by using the chemical etching method with the phosphoric acid etchant. The mechanical properties (including hardness, yield strength, fracture toughness, and brittle index) of the crystal were estimated by Vickers hardness test. The transmission spectrum was measured at room temperature, and the absorption peaks were assigned. Spectral properties of the as-grown crystal were investigated by Judd–Ofelt theory, and the Judd–Ofelt intense parameters Ω2,4,6 were obtained to be 9.674 × 10−20, 2.092 × 10−20, and 4.061 × 10−20 cm2, respectively.

Abstract:Tm,Ho:GdScO3 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. Its quality and effective segregation coefficient of crystal were characterized, and spectral properties of crystal (1 0 0) plane were studied. The absorption cross-section of Tm,Ho:GdScO3 at 793 nm is 1.61 x 10(-20) cm(2) and emission cross-section at 2020 nm is 1.39 x 10(-20) cm(2). The laser performance of the crystal by 793 nm LD end-pumped was investigated. The maximum output power of 240 mW was obtained with a slope efficiency of 9.1 % in CW(continuous wave) pump mode. In pulse mode, the maximum average output power of 507 mW was achieved. The maximum slope efficiency of 13.7 % was obtained with 100 Hz and 400 mu s. The laser wavelength was 2096 nm. The beam quality factors M-x(2)/M-y(2) were fitted to be 1.81/1.80. These results indicate that Tm,Ho:GdScO3 crystal is a promising candidate medium for near-infrared laser application.

Abstract:A good quality (5 at.% Yb:GdScO 3 ) single crystal of φ30 mm×37 mm was grown successfully by the Czochralski method. Its structure was studied by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its atomic coordinates were obtained by Rietveld refinement. The crystal field energy level splitting of Yb 3+ in GdScO 3 was determined from the absorption and photoluminescence spectra at 8 K. Only 2 F 7/2 (4) is far from the ground state 2 F 7/2 (1) by 710 cm -1 among the crystal field energy levels splitted from 2 F 7/2 , so it is more easier to realize the laser operation of 2F5/2(1)→ 2 F 7/2 (4) with wavelength 1060 nm. The spin-orbit coupling parameters and intrinsic crystal field parameters (CFP) (k = 2, 4, 6) of the crystal were fitted by the superposition model. The CFP evaluated with and coordination factor were taken as the initial parameters to fit the crystal field energy levels of the crystal, and are obtained finally with the root-mean-square deviation 9 cm -1 . It is suggested that the ligand point charge, covalency and overlap interaction are weaker a little than charge interpenetration and coulomb exchange interaction for Yb 3+ in GdScO 3 . The obtained Hamiltonian parameters can be used to calculate crystal field energy levels and wave functions of Yb:GdScO 3 to analyze the mechanism of the luminescence or laser.

Abstract:A new crystal of Yb-doped gadolinium niobate, 5 at.% Yb:GdNbO4, is grown by Czochralski method for the first time. The structure of Yb:GdNbO4 is determined by Rietveld refinement to the X-ray powder diffraction data and it belongs to the monoclinic space group of I-2/a. With the center of 955 nm, the FWHM of absorption spectra is 57 nm and the absorption cross section is calculated to be 0.97 x 10(-20) cm(2). Spectral parameters are calculated with absorption spectrum. In emission spectra, the strongest peak is at 1001 rim and the FWHM is 49 rim. In comparison with corresponding emission cross section of Yb:YSO and Yb:GSO, Yb:GdNbO4 exhibits a relatively larger emission cross section. In addition, a maximal output power of 270 mW is obtained and the slope efficiency is 7.5%. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:1at% Er3+ doped Er: GdTaO4 laser crystal with high optical quality was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The structural parameters were obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement. A high crystalline quality of Er: GdTaO4 was determined by the X-ray rocking curve. The transition intensity parameters of Er3+ ions were fitted according to the absorption spectra along three principal polarization directions. The relatively larger emission cross section (1.022×10−20cm2), long fluorescence lifetime ( 5.66ms) and relatively weaker reabsorption phenomenon around 1.6µm indicate that 1at% Er: GdTaO4 crystal can be used as a promising NIR laser material. Meanwhile, the stimulated emission cross-section spectra along three principal polarization directions were investigated for 4I13/2 →4I15/2 transitions at 1.5–1.6µm which indicates a great potential of Er: GdTaO4 for multi-wavelength emission at 1.5–1.6µm. In addition, the possibility of generating green and red lasers in Er: GdTaO4 was also analyzed and evaluated.

Abstract:A Nd-doped GdNbO 4 crystal was grown successfully by Czochralski method. Its monoclinic structure was determined by X-ray diffraction; the unit-cell parameters are a = 5.38 Å, b = 11.09 Å, c = 5.11 Å, and β = 94.56°. The morphological defects of Nd:GdNbO 4 crystal were investigated using the chemical etching with the phosphoric acid etchant. For a new crystal, the physical properties are of great importance. The hardness and density of Nd:GdNbO 4 were investigated first. Thermal properties of Nd:GdNbO 4 , including thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat, were measured along a-, b- , and c -crystalline axes. Thermal properties indicate that the Nd:GdNbO 4 pumped along c -axis can reduce the thermal lensing effect effectively. The specific heat is 0.53 J g −1 K −1 at 300 K, indicating a relatively high damage threshold of Nd:GdNbO 4 . The transmission and emission spectrum of Nd:GdNbO 4 were measured, and the absorption peaks were assigned. The strongest emission peak of Nd:GdNbO 4 is located at 1065.3 nm in the spectral range of 850–1420 nm excited by 808 nm laser. The refractive index of Nd:GdNbO 4 was calculated with the transmission spectrum and fitted with Sellmeier equation. All these obtained results is of great significance for the further research of Nd:GdNbO 4 .

Abstract:A new mixed laser crystal Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3NbO4 (Nd:GYNO) with high quality was grown successfully by Czochralski method. Its structure parameters are obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions is 0.61 in GYNO host. The maximum absorption cross section at 809 nm and peak emission cross section at 1065.6 nm of Nd: GYNO crystal are 11.6 x 10(-20) and 20.5 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of F-4(3/2) manifold for Nd3+ in Nd:GYNO crystal is fitted to be 156 mu s. Diode-pumped continuous-wave laser operations at 1.06 mu m with Nd: GYNO crystals cut perpendicular to crystallographic a, b, and c axes (denoted as a-, b-c-cut, respectively) were demonstrated. A maximum output power of 0.98 W was obtained with c-cut crystal, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 31.3% and a slope efficiency of 30.4%. Abstract:Dy3+:YAP and Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP single crystals have been successfully obtained by Czochralski (CZ) method aiming for ∼3 μm emission. The optical absorption and emission features of both crystals were studied in detail. A narrow and weak absorption band around 800 nm as well as the up-conversion emissions under the excitation of 802 nm in Dy3+:YAP crystal, along with a weak ∼3 μm emission were observed, indicating that Dy3+:YAP crystal was not suitable for direct pumping under 800 nm excitation. Tm3+ ion was introduced as a sensitizer for enhancing ∼3 μm emission. It was found that co-doping with Tm3+ greatly improved the absorption capacity around 800 nm. And thus an enhanced ∼2.84 μm emission was realized in Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP crystal under 795 nm excitation. The energy transfer mechanisms between Tm3+ and Dy3+ ions were discussed, and high microscopic energy transfer constants between Tm3+ and Dy3+ ions were obtained, proving that Tm3+ ion could act as an effective sensitizer for Dy3+ ion in YAP crystal. Following the obtained spectroscopic results, Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP crystal could be a promising medium for ∼3 μm laser operation under 795 nm laser diode for practical applications.

Abstract:The rare-earth sesquioxides (RE2O3, RE=Lu, Y and Sc) are promising host materials for solid-state lasers due to their low phonon energy and high thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Tm3+ and Yb3+ are preferable activators for advanced laser diode pumped solid-state lasers. In addition to that, Tm-doped materials can be used for eye-safe lasers application. Tm-doped Y2O3 single crystals were grown using the micro-pulling-down method. Crystals were transparent with gray and blue colors of 4.2mm in diameter and 13–20mm in length. The crystallinity was characterized using X-ray rocking curve analysis. Tm-doped Y2O3 single crystals have a good compositional homogeneity along the growth axis and their thermal conductivity was calculated from the measurements of thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and density. We have also recorded absorption, fluorescence spectra and measured fluorescence lifetimes as a function of the Tm content, we have found a very attractive fluorescence around the eye-safe wavelength of 1.9mm which corresponds to a 3F4→3H6 transition of Tm3+.

Abstract:Two distinct compositions of mixed garnet crystals, codoped with Dy3+ and Tb3+ ions, were grown using the Czochralski method. The structures and thermal properties of these crystals were thoroughly examined, and the influence of the doping ions on their structure and thermal properties was analyzed. Additionally, a straightforward and reliable method was introduced for accurately determining the specific heat and thermal diffusivity of garnet crystals across a wide temperature range, extending from room temperature to elevated temperatures. The absorption properties of the crystals were investigated, and their bandgap energies were determined using the Tauc formula. The relationship between the bandgap energy of garnet crystals and the radius of cations corroborates Yadav's prediction. Furthermore, the emission characteristics of the crystals under blue, UV, and VUV excitation were thoroughly studied. A proposed mechanism for energy transfer between Dy3+ and Tb3+ ions in the mixed garnet crystals was elucidated based on the absorption and emission characterizations. The results indicate that the mixed garnet crystals possess distinct advantages for the development of blue laser diode pumped yellow lasers. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the structural, thermal, optical, and energy transfer properties of mixed garnet crystals, highlighting their potential applications in all solid-state yellow laser technology.

Abstract:A Nd3+-doped Y2.8ScAl4.2O12 (Nd:YSAG) single crystal was grown successfully via the Czochralski technology. The crystal structure and crystalline quality of the as-grown Nd:YSAG crystal were determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray rocking curve, respectively. By X-ray fluorescence analysis, the effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ is calculated to be 0.33 in the YSAG crystal. Using the chemical etching method, the dislocation density on the (111)-crystalline face is obtained to be about 3.45 × 102 cm−2. The large absorption cross-section (2.95 × 10−20 cm2) and wide FWHM (9.8 nm) around 808.8 nm imply a high LD pumping efficiency. The high emission cross-section (3.53 × 10−20 cm2) at 1336.3 nm and long fluorescence lifetime of Nd3+ ions (286.20 μs) are beneficial to realize laser output. Thereby, all the results indicate that the Nd:YSAG crystal is a potentially new gain material pumped by a LD for near-infrared laser at 1336.3 nm.

Abstract:Spectra and laser operation at 2 μm of Tm:GdScO3 crystal are investigated for the first time. The low symmetry in GdScO3 crystal broadens emission spectrum (269 nm) of Tm3+:3F4 → 3H6 transition, which is the widest in Tm3+ doped crystals. The emission cross-sections at 1975 nm are approximately 0.23 (E//X), 0.23 (E//Y) and 0.28 (E//Z) × 10-20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of Tm3+:3F4 is 3.68 ms. Pumped by a 793 nm laser diode, the output power yields 4.53 W with the slope efficiency of 25%. All results indicate Tm:GdScO3 a promising candidate for 2 μm tunable and ultrashort lasers.

Abstract:A novel mixed laser crystal of Nd:GdLaNbO4 (Nd:GLNO) was grown successfully by conventional Czochralski method. The unit cell parameters were obtained by Rietveld refinement method. The density of the as-grown crystal was measured by Archimedean buoyancy method and calculated in theory. Absorption spectrum of Nd:GLNO crystal was recorded at room temperature, and 11 absorption peaks were assigned. The defects of Nd:GLNO crystal were revealed by using chemical etching method with phosphoric acid as etchant. The mechanical properties (including hardness, yield strength, elastic stiffness constant, fracture toughness and brittleness index) were systemically estimated based on Vickers hardness test. All these obtained results play a quite important role in further investigation of Nd:GLNO crystal.

Abstract:The Nd-GGG crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method, and its structure was studied by laser Micro-Raman spectra. The Raman peaks and fluorescence peaks were discerned by using two excitation wavelengths (Ar+ 325 nm and 514.5 nm), the appeared fluorescence peaks were analyzed the tetrahedral, octahedral and dodecahedral structure of Nd:GGG crystal were contacted with the Raman peaks, and the vibration modes were also recognized. The obtained results are helpful to research the structure of solid-liquid boundary layer during the Nd:GGG growth and the change rule of the growth unit in the boundary layer.
