Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN), known as the silicon of photonics, exhibits outstanding material characteristics with great potential for broad applications. Enhancing light-matter interaction on the nanoscale would result in intriguing device characteristics that enable new physical phenomena to be revealed and novel functionalities inaccessible by conventional means to be realized. High-Q 2D photonic crystal (PhC) slab nanoresonators are particularly suitable for this purpose, which, however, remains an open challenge to be realized on the lithium niobate platform. Here, an important step is taken toward this direction, demonstrating 2D LN PhC slab nanoresonators with optical Q as high as 3.51 x 10(5), about three orders of magnitude higher than other 2D LN PhC structures reported to date. The high optical quality, tight mode confinement, together with specific polarization characteristics of the devices enable the peculiar anisotropy of photorefraction quenching and unique anisotropic thermo-optic nonlinear response to be revealed. They also allow the observation of third-harmonic generation in on-chip LN nanophotonic devices, and a strong orientation-dependent generation of the second harmonic.

Enhancing light-matter interaction in the nanoscopic scale would result in intriguing device characteristics that enable revealing new physical phenomena and realizing novel functionalities inaccessible by conventional means. High-Q two dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) slab nanoresonators are particularly suitable for this purpose, which, however, remains open challenge to be realized on the lithium niobate platform. Here we take an important step towards this direction, demonstrating 2D LN PhC slab nanoresonators with optical Q as high as $3.51 \times 10^5$, about three orders of magnitude higher than other 2D LN PhC structures reported to date. The high optical quality, tight mode confinement, together with pure polarization characteristics of the devices enable us to reveal peculiar anisotropy of photorefraction quenching and unique anisotropic thermo-optic nonlinear response, which have never been reported before. They also allow us to observe third harmonic generation for the first time in on-chip LN nanophotonic devices, and strong orientation-dependent generation of second harmonic. The demonstrated high-Q 2D LN PhC nanoresonators not only offer an excellent device platform for the exploration of extreme nonlinear and quantum optics at single-photon and few-photon level, but also open up a great avenue towards future development of large-scale integrated LN photonic circuits for energy efficient nonlinear photonic and electro-optic signal processing.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) exhibits unique material characteristics that have found many important applications. Scaling LN devices down to a nanoscopic scale can dramatically enhance light-matter interaction that would enable nonlinear and quantum photonic functionalities beyond the reach of conventional means. However, developing LN-based nanophotonic devices turns out to be nontrivial. Although significant efforts have been devoted in recent years, LN photonic crystal structures developed to date exhibit fairly low quality. Here we demonstrate LN photonic crystal nanobeam resonators with optical Q as high as 10^5, more than two orders of magnitude higher than other LN nanocavities reported to date. The high optical quality together with tight mode confinement leads to extremely strong nonlinear photorefractive effect, with a resonance tuning rate of 0.64 GHz/aJ, or equivalently 84 MHz/photon, three orders of magnitude greater than other LN resonators. In particular, we observed intriguing quenching of photorefraction that has never been reported before. The devices also exhibit strong optomechanical coupling with gigahertz nanomechanical mode with a significant f*Q product of 1.47*10^12 Hz. The demonstration of high-Q LN photonic crystal nanoresonators paves a crucial step towards LN nanophotonics that could integrate the outstanding material properties with versatile nanoscale device engineering for diverse intriguing functionalities.

Abstract:Microresonators of ultrahigh quality (Q) factors represent a crucial type of photonic devices aiming at ultra-high spectral resolution, ultra-high sensitivity to the environmental perturbations, and efficient nonlinear wavelength conversions at low threshold pump powers. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microdisks of high Q factors are particularly attractive due to its large second-order nonlinear coefficient and strong electro-optic property. In this letter, we break through the long standing bottleneck in achieving the Q factors of LNOI microresonators beyond 108, which approaches the intrinsic material absorption limit of lithium niobate (LN). The ultra-high Q factors give rise to a rich family of nonlinear optical phenomena from optical parametric oscillation (OPO) to harmonics generation with unprecedented characteristics including ultra-low pump threshold, high wavelength conversion efficiency, and ultra-broad operation bandwidth. Specifically, the threshold of OPO is measured to be only 19.6 μW, and the absolute conversion efficiency observed in the second harmonic generation reaches 23%. The record-breaking performances of the on-chip ultra-high Q LNOI microresonators will have profound implication for both photonic research and industry.

Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) is a versatile material for applications in integrated nonlinear optics; however, due to its stable physical and chemical properties, efficient nonlinear conversion with nanostructured LN is not easy to implement. Here, we propose a resonant nanostructure composed of a SiO2 grating and a lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) layer, which has been proven to support bound states in the continuum (BIC) modes through simulations. By experimentally measuring the angle-resolved transmittance spectra of the fabricated sample, we confirm that our proposed nanostructure exhibits quasi-BIC modes transitioning from BIC modes, resulting in strong localized field confinement. In the nonlinear experiment, our results show the significant potential of the nanostructure in enhancing second harmonic generation (SHG). By pumping at the resonant wavelength, we achieve a SHG enhancement factor of 6400, compared to a flat LNOI thin film under a fundamental wave (FW) peak intensity of 460 MW/cm2. The SHG conversion efficiency reaches up to 1.741 × 10−7, leading to a normalized conversion efficiency of 3.785 × 10−7 cm2/GW. Although the experimental results are two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical maximum SHG conversion efficiency of approximately 10−5, we believe that our proposed etchless LNOI nanostructure highlights the tremendous potential for applications in nonlinear resonant nanophotonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate flexible nonlinear frequency up-conversion in high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanobeam resonators. The high optical Q together with strong optical mode confinement allows us to observe clear second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation with an optical power around only tens of microWatts. These demonstrations show that high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanoresonators are of great promise for nonlinear photonic applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate high quality (intrinsic Q factor ~2.8×106) racetrack microresonators fabricated on lithium niobate (LN) thin film with a free spectral range (FSR) of ~86.38 pm. By integrating microelectrodes alongside the two straight arms of the racetrack resonator, the resonance wavelength around the 1550 nm can be red shifted by 92 pm when the electric voltage is raised from -100 V to 100 V. The microresonators of the tuning range spanning over a full FSR is fabricated using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching, PLACE).

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) is the workhorse for modern optoelectronics industry and nonlinear optics. High quality (Q) factor LN microresonators are promising candidates for applications in optical communications, quantum photonics, and sensing. However, the phase-matching requirement of traditional evanescent coupling methods poses significant challenges to achieve high coupling efficiencies of the pump and signal light simultaneously, ultimately limiting the practical usefulness of these high Q factor LN resonators. Here, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate deformed chaotic LN microcavities that feature directional emission patterns and high Q factors simultaneously. The chaotic LN microdisks are created using conventional semiconductor fabrication processes, with measured Q factors exceeding 106 in the telecommunication band. We show that our devices can be free-space-coupled with high efficiency by leveraging directional emission from the asymmetric cavity. Using this broadband approach, we demonstrate a 58-fold enhancement of free-space collection efficiency of a second harmonic generation signal, compared with a circular microdisk.

Abstract:On-chip optical microresonators are essential building blocks in integrated optics. The ability to arbitrarily engineer their resonant frequencies is crucial for exploring novel physics in synthetic frequency dimensions and practical applications like nonlinear optical parametric processes and dispersion-engineered frequency comb generation. Photonic crystal ring (PhCR) resonators are a versatile tool for such arbitrary frequency engineering, by controllably creating mode splitting at selected resonances. To date, these PhCRs have mostly been demonstrated in isotropic photonic materials, while such engineering could be significantly more complicated in anisotropic platforms that often offer more fruitful optical properties. Here, we realize the spectral engineering of chip-scale optical microresonators in the anisotropic lithium niobate (LN) crystal by a gradient design that precisely compensates for variations in both refractive index and perturbation strength. We experimentally demonstrate controllable frequency splitting at single and multiple selected resonances in LN PhCR resonators with different sizes, while maintaining high Q-factors up to 1 million. Moreover, we experimentally construct a sharp boundary in the synthetic frequency dimension based on an actively modulated x-cut LN gradient-PhCR, opening up new paths toward the arbitrary control of electro-optic comb spectral shapes and exploration of novel physics in the frequency degree of freedom.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities with high Q factor and low volume have been applied in nonlinear, electro-optic and acoustic-optic devices due to the enhancement of the light-matter interactions. However, there are few devices and research on LiNbO3 (LN) PhC cavities due to the difficulty in making hyperfine structures on LN platform. In this work, we propose a PhC nanobeam cavity on the etchless x-cut LiNbO3-On-Insulator (LNOI). The fabrication-friendly device has been designed based on photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) exhibiting a high Q factor of over 10,000 with the device length of only about 100 µm. Utilizing the electro-optical effect γ13 of LN, we demonstrate an ultra-compact electro-optic modulator based on the PhC nanobeam cavities, which has the modulation efficiency of 1.5 pm/V and the 3 dB bandwidth of 28 GHz.
High quality factor nanophotonic resonators in bulk rare-earth doped crystals

Abstract:Numerous bulk crystalline materials exhibit attractive nonlinear and luminescent properties for classical and quantum optical applications. A chip-scale platform for high quality factor optical nanocavities in these materials will enable new optoelectronic devices and quantum light-matter interfaces. In this article, photonic crystal nanobeam resonators fabricated using focused ion beam milling in bulk insulators, such as rare-earth doped yttrium orthosilicate and yttrium vanadate, are demonstrated. Operation in the visible, near infrared, and telecom wavelengths with quality factors up to 27,000 and optical mode volumes close to one cubic wavelength is measured. These devices enable new nanolasers, on-chip quantum optical memories, single photon sources, and non-linear devices at low photon numbers based on rare-earth ions. The techniques are also applicable to other luminescent centers and crystal.

Abstract:We report our recent development in pursuing high Quality-Factor (high-Q factor) plasmonic resonances, with vertically aligned two dimensional (2-D) periodic nanorod arrays. The 2-D vertically aligned nano-antenna array can have high-Q resonances varying arbitrarily from near infrared to terahertz regime, as the antenna resonances of the nanorod are highly tunable through material properties, the length of the nanorod, and the orthogonal polarization direction with respect to the lattice surface,. The high-Q in combination with the small optical mode volume gives a very high Purcell factor, which could potentially be applied to various enhanced nonlinear photonics or optoelectronic devices. The 'hot spots' around the nanorods can be easily harvested as no index-matching is necessary. The resonances maintain their high-Q factor with the change of the environmental refractive index, which is of great interest for molecular sensing.
