Abstract:We report extremely strong cavity tuning by photorefraction in LiNbO3 photonic crystal nanocavities, with a tuning rate up to similar to 84 MHz/photon. In particular, we report for the first time intriguing quenching of photorefraction in these devices.

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) exhibits unique material characteristics that have found many important applications. Scaling LN devices down to a nanoscopic scale can dramatically enhance light-matter interaction that would enable nonlinear and quantum photonic functionalities beyond the reach of conventional means. However, developing LN-based nanophotonic devices turns out to be nontrivial. Although significant efforts have been devoted in recent years, LN photonic crystal structures developed to date exhibit fairly low quality. Here we demonstrate LN photonic crystal nanobeam resonators with optical Q as high as 10^5, more than two orders of magnitude higher than other LN nanocavities reported to date. The high optical quality together with tight mode confinement leads to extremely strong nonlinear photorefractive effect, with a resonance tuning rate of 0.64 GHz/aJ, or equivalently 84 MHz/photon, three orders of magnitude greater than other LN resonators. In particular, we observed intriguing quenching of photorefraction that has never been reported before. The devices also exhibit strong optomechanical coupling with gigahertz nanomechanical mode with a significant f*Q product of 1.47*10^12 Hz. The demonstration of high-Q LN photonic crystal nanoresonators paves a crucial step towards LN nanophotonics that could integrate the outstanding material properties with versatile nanoscale device engineering for diverse intriguing functionalities.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:Energy-efficient optical control of photonic device properties is crucial for diverse photonic signal processing. Here we demonstrate extremely efficient optical tuning of photonic nanocavities, with only photon-level optical energy. With a lithium niobate photonic crystal nanocavity with an optical Q up to 1.41 million and an effective mode volume down to 0.78$(\lambda/n)^3$, we are able to achieve a resonance tuning rate of about 88.4~MHz/photon (0.67~GHz/aJ), which allows us to tune across the whole cavity resonance with only about 2.4 photons on average inside the cavity. Such a photon-level resonance tuning is of great potential for energy-efficient optical switching, wavelength routing, and reconfiguration of photonic devices/circuits that are indispensable for future photonic interconnect.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN), known as the silicon of photonics, exhibits outstanding material characteristics with great potential for broad applications. Enhancing light-matter interaction on the nanoscale would result in intriguing device characteristics that enable new physical phenomena to be revealed and novel functionalities inaccessible by conventional means to be realized. High-Q 2D photonic crystal (PhC) slab nanoresonators are particularly suitable for this purpose, which, however, remains an open challenge to be realized on the lithium niobate platform. Here, an important step is taken toward this direction, demonstrating 2D LN PhC slab nanoresonators with optical Q as high as 3.51 x 10(5), about three orders of magnitude higher than other 2D LN PhC structures reported to date. The high optical quality, tight mode confinement, together with specific polarization characteristics of the devices enable the peculiar anisotropy of photorefraction quenching and unique anisotropic thermo-optic nonlinear response to be revealed. They also allow the observation of third-harmonic generation in on-chip LN nanophotonic devices, and a strong orientation-dependent generation of the second harmonic.

Abstract:Numerous bulk crystalline materials exhibit attractive nonlinear and luminescent properties for classical and quantum optical applications. A chip-scale platform for high quality factor optical nanocavities in these materials will enable new optoelectronic devices and quantum light-matter interfaces. In this article, photonic crystal nanobeam resonators fabricated using focused ion beam milling in bulk insulators, such as rare-earth doped yttrium orthosilicate and yttrium vanadate, are demonstrated. Operation in the visible, near infrared, and telecom wavelengths with quality factors up to 27,000 and optical mode volumes close to one cubic wavelength is measured. These devices enable new nanolasers, on-chip quantum optical memories, single photon sources, and non-linear devices at low photon numbers based on rare-earth ions. The techniques are also applicable to other luminescent centers and crystal.

Abstract:Photonic devices based on a high-Q cavity are commonly constrained by narrow operation bandwidth, slow charging, and releasing speed. Here, we analytically and numerically demonstrate that this limitation can be broken via dynamically tuning the Q factors of a single nanocavity and driving controllable photonic transitions between a low-Q cavity mode and an ultrahigh-Q mode by temporal refractive index modulations inside a multimode cavity. During this dynamic process, the bandwidth of signal light is also reversibly compressed. As a result, the fundamental link between the photon lifetime and the operation bandwidth is broken, and a delay-bandwidth product of ∼76 is achieved, which is far greater than that of the usual optical resonator systems. This approach may pave the way for dynamic control of on-chip all-optical information processing.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The demonstrated high-Q 2D LN PhC nanoresonators not only offer an excellent device platform for the exploration of extreme nonlinear and quantum optics at single-photon and few-photon level, but also open up a great avenue towards future development of large-scale integrated LN photonic circuits for energy efficient nonlinear photonic and electro-optic signal processing.

Abstract:We demonstrate flexible nonlinear frequency up-conversion in high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanobeam resonators. The high optical Q together with strong optical mode confinement allows us to observe clear second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation with an optical power around only tens of microWatts. These demonstrations show that high-Q lithium niobate photonic crystal nanoresonators are of great promise for nonlinear photonic applications.

Abstract:The expansive spectral coverage and superior optical properties of lithium niobate (LN) offer a comprehensive suite of tools for exploring novel functionalities. Achieving high-quality (Q) photonic resonator cavities is crucial for enhancing light-matter interactions. However, this task is challenging as the device performance is heavily dependent on the fabrication quality of the LN. In this paper, we present experimental validation of an etchless approach to fabricating high-Q photonic crystal nanobeam cavities (PCNBCs). We successfully fabricate PCNBCs with Q factors exceeding 105 while maintaining high transmittance by capitalizing on the low waveguide loss and high fabrication tolerance of TE-polarized mode. Remarkably, the Q factor achieved here exceeds previous reports on etchless LN PCNBCs by over an order of magnitude. Benefiting from this advancement, we further explore a variety of optical functions, including thermo-optic tuning, optically induced bistability, and Fano line shapes generation. These findings present promising prospects for a versatile platform technique, facilitating the development of high-performance electro-optic or acousto-optic modulators, optical logic devices, and quantum photonics, highlighting its significant impact in the field of photonic integration.

Abstract:A deterministic design of an ultrahigh Q-factor, wavelength-scale photonic crystal nanobeam cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using this approach, cavities with Q>106 and on-resonance transmission T>90% are designed. The devices, fabricated in silicon and capped with a low refractive index polymer, have experimental Q=80 000 and T=73%. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest transmission measured in deterministically designed, wavelength-scale high-Q cavities.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities with high Q factor and low volume have been applied in nonlinear, electro-optic and acoustic-optic devices due to the enhancement of the light-matter interactions. However, there are few devices and research on LiNbO3 (LN) PhC cavities due to the difficulty in making hyperfine structures on LN platform. In this work, we propose a PhC nanobeam cavity on the etchless x-cut LiNbO3-On-Insulator (LNOI). The fabrication-friendly device has been designed based on photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) exhibiting a high Q factor of over 10,000 with the device length of only about 100 µm. Utilizing the electro-optical effect γ13 of LN, we demonstrate an ultra-compact electro-optic modulator based on the PhC nanobeam cavities, which has the modulation efficiency of 1.5 pm/V and the 3 dB bandwidth of 28 GHz.

Abstract:Wavelength-scale, high Q-factor photonic crystal cavities have emerged as a platform of choice for on-chip manipulation of optical signals, with applications ranging from low-power optical signal processing and cavity quantum electrodynamics, to biochemical sensing. Many of these applications, however, are limited by the fabrication tolerances and the inability to precisely control the resonant wavelength of fabricated structures. Various techniques for post-fabrication wavelength trimming and dynamical wavelength control -- using, for example, thermal effects, free carrier injection, low temperature gas condensation, and immersion in fluids -- have been explored. However, these methods are often limited by small tuning ranges, high power consumption, or the inability to tune continuously or reversibly. In this letter, by combining nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) and nanophotonics, we demonstrate reconfigurable photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that can be continuously and dynamically tuned using electrostatic forces. A tuning of ~10 nm has been demonstrated with less than 6 V of external bias and negligible steady-state power consumption.
