Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes were prepared in a clear synthesis solution without the aid of nanoseeds. To improve the properties of the membranes formed in a clear solution, alumina hollow fibers were fabricated by adding silica powder to the conventional spinning slurry, resulting in hollow fibers with a mullite phase. Prior to the membrane synthesis, the hollow fibers were pretreated by dipping in an aged synthesis solution diluted with isopropanol. Dense zeolite NaA membranes on mullite-containing alumina hollow fibers were successfully obtained at 100 degrees C for 2 h without the aid of nanoseeds. The membranes have a good pervaporation performance with a high flux of 10.8 kg m(-2) h(-1) and a separation factor of over 10,000. The abundant mullite-phase hydroxyl groups on the support surface promote the nucleation and growth of zeolite crystals on the support, resulting in dense membranes. Preparation of Zeolite NaA Membranes on Macroporous Alumina Supports by Secondary Growth of Gel Layers

Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes are synthesized on tubular alpha-Al(2)o(3) supports by the secondary growth of gel layers. The gel layer is prepared by wetting rubbing hydrogel with a composition similar to the secondary synthesis solution xNa(2)O:2SiO2:Al2O3:150H(2)O. The hydrogel's good uniformity makes it easier to gain a uniform gel layer. Zeolite NaA membranes are characterized by SEM and pervaporation separation of a 90 wt % ethanol/water mixture at 75 degrees C. The effects of the pretreatment time, pretreatment temperature, gel loading, and Na2O/Al2O3 ratio of the hydrogel on properties of zeolite NaA membranes are investigated. It is found that zeolite NaA membranes with high separation factors up to 10 000 can be obtained by secondary growth of gel layers. The optimal pretreatment conditions of the hydrogel are as follows: pretreatment temperature, 50 degrees C; pretreatment time, >= 18 h; and gel loading, 0.6-0.9 mg/cm(2). The optimal composition of the hydrogel is 2.2Na(2)O:2SiO(2):Al2O3:150H(2)O, which is the same as the synthesis solution. Like crystal seeds, the gel layer improves the zeolite membrane formation on the support surface, and the role of the gel layer becomes more significant with greater amounts of crystals.
Manipulation of the Surface Microstructure and Its Effects on the Flux of NaA Zeolite Membranes in Pervaporation

Abstract:NaA membranes with different microstructures are synthesized on macroporous alumina tubes with the addition of crystallization improving agents (CIAs) which have the same composition with the synthesis hydrogel but are aged for a longer time (e.g., 24 h). The as-synthesized membranes are characterized by SEM, contact angle measurement and pervaporation test. It is found that the addition of the CIAs in the synthesis hydrogel has significant influence on the surface roughness of zeolite membrane, resulting in the change of the hydrophilicity and thus flux of the zeolite membrane. Dense NaA membranes with high flux of 4.53 kg m(-2) h(-1) can be obtained at 100 degrees C for 3 h with the addition of 10 wt% CIAs in the synthesis hydrogel. The flux is increased by 14% compared with the membrane synthesized at the same condition without CIAs. The surface roughness of the membranes can also be changed by the method of polishing and re-synthesizing with the assist of nano-seeds. After polishing, the flux decreases to 3.83 kg m(-2) h(-1); however, the flux can be recovered to 4.45 kg m(-2) h(-1) after re-synthesizing. This study provides a good method to enhance the separation efficiency and indicates that the surface microstructure of membranes influences their pervaporation performance. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:The influences of size (90-1500 nm) and amount (1-4 wt %) of as-synthesized seed crystals on the properties of zeolite NaA membranes on alumina hollow fibers are investigated. Seeds and membranes are characterized by dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. It is found that in order to prepare dense NaA membranes with high separation performance, for seeds smaller than 100 and 200 nm, the optimal concentrations are 1 and 3 wt %, respectively; while for large-sized seeds (>1500 nm), membranes obtained using the seed suspension with 4 wt % seed concentration still have defects. Furthermore, the influence of crystal fragments (similar to 50 nm) obtained by ball-milling available crystals (e.g., 1500 nm) on the formation of zeolite membrane is also studied. Based on the morphology and performance of membranes grown from different seeds, seed-assisted membrane formation process is briefly discussed.

Abstract:NaA zeolite membranes were first applied in industrial organic solvent dehydration in 1999. However, issues such as poor reproducibility, low flux, and high cost of NaA zeolite membrane preparation have hindered its industrial progress. In this work, a direct secondary growth of wet gel layer method is employed. Specifically, a wet gel layer is coated to the outer surface of the seeded support, which is then placed into the Teflon-lined autoclave without additional hydrogel inside. Under the conditions of conventional secondary growth (100 degrees C for 4 h), high flux NaA zeolite membranes can be prepared. The pervaporation performance in the 90 wt% ethanol/water solution is tested at 75 degrees C, showing the flux up to 4.59 kg m- 2 h-1 and the separation factor above 10,000. The controlling factors involved in the preparation of high flux NaA zeolite membranes using the direct secondary growth of wet gel layer are investigated. It is found that the introduction method of the seed layer and wet gel layer, the size of the seed, the state of the gel, and the immersion time play significant roles in the formation of zeolite membranes with superior separation performance. This method provides a new idea for the preparation of high performance, low cost and reproducible zeolite membranes with prospects for industrial application.

Abstract:Micro-sized crystals of mesoporous zeolite NaA (meso-NaA) are prepared and their mechanical strength is compared with conventional NaA crystals. Crystals are characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy and dynamic light scattering. It is found that micro-sized meso-NaA crystals composed by numerous domains of interconnected nanocrystals can be easily smashed by hand-grinding, showing lower mechanical strength than conventional crystals. The suspension of zeolite NaA nanocrystals (similar to 110 nm) can be easily obtained after removing micro-sized crystals by centrifuging the suspension of the grinded crystals at 1000 rpm and can be used to seed hollow fiber supports. Zeolite membranes with high separation performance are obtained on the seeded hollow fiber supports by seeded growth. Preparation of Mordenite Composite Membranes with Seeding

Abstract:Mordenite composite membranes were prepared by means of coating a porous α-alumina support with nanosized mordenite seeds followed by hydrothermal crystallization. A systematic investigation was performed on the influence of several factors such as ageing of the reaction mixture, alkalinity, salt addition and temperature on the formation of a mordenite membrane on the seeded support. The ageing of the reaction mixture reduces the growth rate of mordenite crystal along a-axis and b-axis but hardly influences the growth rate along c-axis. As a result, the boundaries between the surface crystals become a little larger with prolonging the period of ageing time. The growth rate of the mordenite crystal along individual axes increases first and then decreases with increasing concentration of sodium hydroxide. A higher alkalinity is unfavorable for the formation of a continuous mordenite membrane. The addition of salt in the reaction mixture has different effect on the growth rate of the mordenite crystal along each axis. With increasing the amount of salt, there was hardly influence on the growth rate along c-axis, whereas an obvious decline was observed in the growth rate along either a-axis or b-axis, which enlarges the boundaries between the surface crystals. The growth rate of the mordenite crystal increases more along c-axis than that along a-axis or b-axis with increasing temperature for hydrothermal crystallization. The use of a temperature as high as 473 K produces a membrane composed of bar-like crystals with larger boundaries.

Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes with excellent water/ethanol separation factors are successfully prepared on the inner surface of hollow fibers in a rotating autoclave for the first time. NaA/PES composite hollow fibers (CHF) are first used to investigate the effects of different synthesis conditions such as synthesis composition, synthesis time and synthesis method (static and dynamic) because there are uniform seed crystals on the inner surface of CHF supports. The seeded growth of zeolite NaA membranes on the inner surface of alumina hollow fibers (AHF) supports (1.0mm i.d.) are carried out at 373K. The optimal synthesis conditions obtained are applied to AHF supports to investigate the effects of seed suspensions by the dip-coating seeding method. The effects of the synthesis conditions for AHF supports on the membrane morphology and properties are also investigated. The synthesized membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The separation properties of the membranes are evaluated by pervaporation of 90wt.% ethanol/water mixture at 348K. Zeolite membranes with high separation factor up to 10,000 can be obtained under the conditions: synthesis composition of 7.5Na2O:2SiO2:Al2O3:600H2O, synthesis time of 5h, using a rotating autoclave (30rpm).

Abstract:Polycrystalline zeolite MFI (silicalite-1) membranes are successfully prepared by the secondary growth method on the α-Al2O3 hollow fibers with a high surface/volume ratio. Influences of the seed suspension concentration, the crystallization time and the content of the structure-directing agent (SDA, e.g., TPAOH) in the synthesis solution are investigated. As-synthesized zeolite seeds and membranes are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The membrane formation and integrity are found to be sensitively depending on the SDA contents in the synthesis solution and the seed amount of the seeded layer. High TPAOH content may cause aluminum leaching from the alumina support seriously and low TPAOH content may lead to non-continuous zeolite layer, leading to poor separation performance. A continuous and dense zeolite seed layer is necessary to obtain the silicalite-1 membrane with good quality. However, too thick seed layer may cause peeling and cracking of the membrane and thus decrease the separation performance. Appropriate TPAOH and seed amount may prevent the α-Al2O3 support leaching effectively. The silicalite-1 membranes prepared in this paper show the highest flux and relatively high separation factor of ethanol/water mixtures compared with the literature data.

Abstract:High quality zeolite MFI membranes are successfully synthesized on inexpensive defective macroporous alumina tubes by the seeded growth method. A novel seeding method of wetting assisted rubbing (wetting–rubbing, WR) technique is developed and with this new WR method alumina supports are first wetted with a liquid agent followed by rubbing dry MFI seed crystals. Effects of two typical wetting agents, i.e., alcohol solvents (n-butanol) and water on the seed layer formation and membrane performance are investigated. Experimental data suggest that n-butanol is much more effective than water for preparation of a uniform and continuous MFI seed layer on the defective alumina support, which is attributed to the hydrophobic nature of MFI crystals and their better dispersion in alcohols. The zeolite membranes synthesized at 175°C for 4h on the well-seeded supports have a separation layer thickness of ∼3.5μm, and exhibit a high pervaporation performance with the ethanol/water separation factor of 62 and permeation flux of 1.82kgm−2h−1 for the 5:95 (wt%) ethanol/water mixture separation at 60°C. The WR seeding method may lead to reproducible preparation of zeolite membranes on defective low-cost supports.

Abstract:A-type zeolite membranes were synthesized on seeded Al_2O_3 particles under hydrothermal conditions.The crystal structure and surface morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Raman spectroscope and scanning electron microscope techniques.The effects of seeds and multi-stage synthesis on the quality of the membranes were investigated.The quality of A-type zeolite membranes is improved by the multi-stage synthesis methods,a thin and continuous membranes is formed on the surface of Al_2O_3 particle.The thickness is increased from 15 μm to 50 μm after three-stage growth compared with two-stage growth.
Preparation of Asymmetric Zeolite NaA Membrane Layers by Vapor Phase Transfer and Seeded Growth Method

Abstract:Asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layers are synthesized on tubular α-Al2O3 supports by the vapor phase transfer method followed by seeded growth. The preparation of the asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layer includes the preparation of porous zeolite NaA membrane sublayer by vapor phase transfer method and the preparation of dense top layer by seeded growth. The effects of the Na2O/Al2O3 ratio, pretreatment time and water content of the hydrogel, as well as the vapor phase transfer time on properties of porous zeolite NaA membranes are investigated. The optimal conditions of the hydrogel are as follows:pretreatment temperature 50 ℃, pretreatment time 5 h, and the composition of the hydrogel 7.5Na2O:2SiO2:Al2O3:150H2O. The seeds of 120 nm are coated on the porous zeolite NaA membrane by wetting-rubbing. Asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layers are synthesized with the secondary growth method from the seeded membranes. Zeolite NaA membranes are characterized by SEM and pervaporation separation of 90% ethanol aqueous solution at 75 ℃. The flux of the membrane is up to 3.43 kg/(m2·h), while the separation factor is 3 685.

Abstract:Template-free nanosized ZSM-5 seeds were prepared from commercially available ZSM-5 powder. By use of these seeds, thin and hydrophilic ZSM-5 zeolite membranes were prepared on the outer surface of a porous α-alumina tube in a clear solution free from organic template. The membranes showed high thermal stability to withstand pretreatment at 400 °C. At 270 °C, the ideal selectivities for H2/i-butane and N2/SF6 were 61 and 20, respectively. The membrane was effective to separate butane isomers at high temperatures. The maximum of the n/i-butane ideal selectivity was 36 at 300 °C. The separation factors for a 50/50 n/i-butane mixture were as high as 13 in the temperature range from 300 to 400 °C.

Abstract:Zeolite membranes are broadly applied in separation, catalysis, and sensor, yet challenges remain in the preparation process. The design of support is an important component to simplify the synthesis protocol and improve the repeatability. Herein, we present a facile and universal strategy to fabricate high-performance zeolite membranes via engineering the skeleton of hollow fiber supports, on which a variety of high-performance zeolite membranes (e.g., MFI, LTA and FAU) can be obtained just by in-situ crystallization without any modification. The "reactive" support is fabricated by implanting zeolite crystals (e.g., NaA) in the precursor of porous ceramic alumina support. Being dissolved under alkaline condition of the synthesis solution, the zeolite calcination transformant (e.g., NaA-Cal) produced in the support during sintering process can effectively form nucleation sites on the support surface, and continuously provide active species to ensure the continuity of the membrane. This study contributes new insights into the importance of supports for high-performance zeolite membranes. Meanwhile, the synthetic methodology is expected to expand the preparation method of zeolite membranes and promote the large-scale application of zeolite membranes.

Abstract:We report a new strategy: use of polymer-zeolite composite hollow fibers as supports. Zeolite membranes with high performance (flux = 8.0-9.0 kg m(-2) h(-1), alpha >10000) can be synthesized directly on polymer-zeolite composite hollow fiber supports by a single in situ hydrothermal crystallization. The zeolite crystals imbedded in the polymer hollow fiber serve as seeds for the zeolite membrane growth, and they also "anchor" the zeolite membrane to the support to increase the adhesion of the zeolite membrane. Therefore, a separate and often complex seeding process can be omitted. A very uniform crystal distribution can be obtained easily, so continuous zeolite membranes can be prepared with high reproducibility. These composite hollow fibers can be produced simply by blending zeolite crystals into the polymer feed before the hollow fiber extrusion and thus are expected to be inexpensive.
Ultrasonic-assisted Fabrication of High Flux T-type Zeolite Membranes on Alumina Hollow Fibers

Abstract:Ultrasonic-assisted pretreatment prior to hydrothermal synthesis is employed for the first time in the preparation of T-type zeolite membranes on α-Al2O3 hollow fibers by secondary growth. The synthesis time can be shortened from 40h to 24h with only 0.5h ultrasonic pretreatment of the synthesis solution. Elongating ultrasonic treatment time to 1.0h has no further improvement for the formation of dense membrane. Typically, the pure phase T-type zeolite membrane synthesized in 24h with 0.5h ultrasonic pretreatment has a separation factor of > 10,000 and a flux of 12.2kgm−2h−1 for 90.0wt% isopropanol aqueous solution at 75°C. When the porosity of the hollow fiber support is 68%, the flux is as high as 14.3kgm−2h−1, which is the highest flux ever reported. The high flux of the membrane can be mainly ascribed to the special structure and porosity of the α-Al2O3 hollow fiber support. Finally, a mechanism for ultrasonic-assisted membrane preparation is proposed.

Abstract:Rubbing it in: Zeolite membranes with a high separation performance and reproducibility are synthesized on supports with large pores by rubbing a seed paste onto the surface of the support. A smooth seeded surface can be obtained by applying an additional shaving process. Depositing seed paste on the support surface is likely to open up a new route for seeding large-pores support, thus greatly decreasing the cost of zeolite membranes. Abstract:Thin MFI-type zeolite membranes are prepared on α-Al2O3 hollow fibers by secondary growth. Nanoseeds with different gel amounts have been prepared and the influences of silicalite-1 nanoseeds on membrane formation and separation performance of the membrane are investigated. Both the as-synthesized zeolite seeds and membranes are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The separation properties of as-synthesized membranes are evaluated by pervaporation of 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 60 °C. It is found that the gel amount in the nanoseeds is critical in obtaining continuous membranes with high separation performance. Membranes prepared via nanoseeds from ball-milled crystals show higher hydrophobicity and denser microstructure, and thus exhibit higher pervaporation performance than those prepared from as-synthesized nanoseeds.
Synthesis of zeolite NaA membrane from fused fly ash extract

Abstract:Zeolite-NaA membranes were synthesized from an extract of fused South African fly ash on a porous titanium support by a secondary growth method. The influence of the synthesis molar regime on the formation of zeolite NaA membrane layer was investigated. Two synthesis mixtures were generated by adding either aluminium hydroxide or sodium aluminate to the fused fly ash extract. The feedstock material and the synthesized membranes were characterized by X-diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). It was found by XRD and SEM that the cubic crystals of a typical zeolite NaA with a dense intergrown layer was formed on the porous Ti support. The study shows that the source of Al used had an effect on the membrane integrity as sodium aluminate provided the appropriate amount of Na(+) to form a coherent membrane of zeolite NaA, whereas aluminium hydroxide did not. Morphological, the single hydrothermal stage seeded support formed an interlocked array of zeolite NaA particles with neighbouring crystals. Also, a robust, continuous and well-intergrown zeolite NaA membrane was formed with neighbouring crystals of zeolite fused to each other after the multiple stage synthesis. The synthesized membrane was permeable to He (6.0 × 10(6) L m(-2)h(-1) atm(-1)) and CO2 (5.6 × 10(6) L m(-2)h(-1) atm(-1)), which indicate that the layer of the membrane was firmly attached to the porous Ti support. Membrane selectivity was maintained showing membrane integrity with permselectivity of 1.1, showing that a waste feedstock, fly ash, could be utilized for preparing robust zeolite NaA membranes on Ti support.

Abstract:<p>Dense and pure zeolite FAU membrane was obtained with dry gel modified α-alumina support. Before aging-microwave (AM) process, α-alumina support was covered with dry homogenous gel layer. Compared to membrane synthesized with the single AM process, zeolite FAU membrane prepared with dry gel modified AM method displayed high pervaporation performance with flux of 2.19 kg/m<sup>2</sup>·h (average value) and water permeation of 99.5% (average value) for the mixture of water/ethanol (10/90) at 60 °C. Characterizations revealed that high local alkalinity over the dry gel layer could promote the nucleation and the growth of zeolite FAU membrane. However, excessive content of dry gel caused the formation of Sodalite (SOD) impurities. Furthermore, the synthesis conditions of zeolite FAU membrane with dry gel modified AM method were optimized systematically. The synthesis of high-performance membrane with the optimal conditions showed good reproducibility and high efficiency, implying that dry gel modified AM method was a promising method to synthesize pure zeolite FAU membrane.</p>
