Abstract:A highly chemoselective conversion of α,β-disubstituted nitroalkenes to ketones is developed. An acid-compatible iridium catalyst serves as the key to the conversion. At a 2500 S/C ratio, nitroalkenes were readily converted to ketones in up to 72% isolated yields. A new mechanistic mode involving the reduction of nitroalkene to nitrosoalkene and N-alkenyl hydroxylamine is proposed. This conversion is ready to amplify to a gram-scale synthesis. The pH value plays an indispensable role in controlling the chemoselectivity.

Abstract:Herein, we report an efficient one-pot iridium-catalyzed reductive hydroamination of terminal alkynes with amines. A variety of primary amines and secondary amines are amenable to this catalytic system, leading to the complicated aliphatic amines in excellent yields. More broadly, this straightforward and convenient transformation do not just employ inexpensive and easy to handle HCO 2 H as reducing agent, but also employs H 2 O as reaction media, which makes this strategy be in accordance with green and sustainable chemistry principles.

Abstract:In hydrothermal reactions at 260−300 °C, ketones can be reduced into corresponding alcohols by hydrogen transferring from another alcohols or formic acid without a metal catalyst. When using formic acid as a hydrogen donor, the yield of alcohols at respective better conditions was considerably high at a much lower ratio of hydrogen source to ketones compared to traditional Meerwein−Poundrof−Verley (MPV) reduction, reaching 60% for isopropanol from acetone and 70% for lactic acid from pyruvic acid. The proposed possible mechanism for the hydrogen transfer reduction of ketones in high-temperature water (HTW) is similar to the pathway elucidated in the traditional MPV reduction via a transition state. Rather than metal-alkoxides catalysts in MPV reduction, water molecules in HTW as a catalyst may directly participate in the transition state by making a hydrogen-bond ring network with three molecules, that is, ketone, formic acid, and water.

Abstract:The hydrothermal experiments with ketones and formic acid showed that the hydrogen transfer reduction of ketones can be conducted using formic acid as a hydride donor in the presence of NaOH at 300 °C. The yield of alcohols was considerably higher at a much lower ratio of hydrogen source to ketones than the traditional Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction, reaching 60% for isopropanol from acetone and 70% for lactic acid from pyruvic acid. Abstract:AbstractAsymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of ketones by formate in neat water is shown to be viable with Rh‐TsDPEN and Ir‐TsDPEN catalysts, derived in situ from [Cp*MCl2]2 (M=Rh, Ir) and TsDPEN. A variety of ketones were reduced, including nonfunctionalized aryl ketones, heteroaryl ketones, ketoesters, and unsaturated ketones. In comparison with Ir‐TsDPEN and the related RuII catalyst, the RhIII catalyst is most efficient in water, affording enantioselectivities of up to 99 % ee at substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratios of 100–1000 even without working under an inert atmosphere. The aqueous phase reduction is shown to be highly pH‐dependent; the optimum pH windows for TOF greater than 50 mol mol−1 h−1 for Rh‐ and Ir‐TsDPEN are 5.5–10.0 and 6.5–8.5, respectively. Outside the pH window, the reduction becomes slow or stagnant depending on the pH. However, the enantioselectivities erode only under acidic conditions. At a higher S/C ratio, the aqueous ATH by Rh‐TsDPEN is shown to be product‐ as well as byproduct‐inhibited; the product inhibition appears to stem at least partly from the reaction being reversible. The aqueous phase reduction is simple, efficient and environmentally benign, thus presenting a viable alternative for asymmetric reduction.

Abstract:Reduction of a well-known single electron oxidant [IrCl 6 ] 2– by aliphatic hydrazides, viz. formic hydrazide, acethydrazide and butyrohydrazide, was investigated by use of several techniques including 1 H NMR and rapid scan spectroscopies. It was demonstrated that the redox reactions exclusively follow second-order kinetics over a wide pH range; the observed second-order rate constants k ' versus pH profiles have been established. When the features revealed by the rapid scan spectra, the reaction stoichiometry and the oxidation products were considered together, a reaction mechanism was proposed involving three parallel rate-determining steps in which [IrCl 6 ] 2– reacted with all the three protolytic forms of the hydrazides. Rate constants of the rate-determining steps and the dissociation constants of hydrazides at 25.0 °C and 1.0 M ionic strength were derived from the kinetic data. Activation parameters were determined for the reactions of [IrCl 6 ] 2– with the neutral forms of the hydrazides, and an outer-sphere electron transfer mode was implied. The reactivity of each protolytic form of the hydrazides was elucidated and its distribution versus pH was calculated. The reactivity of the protolytic forms was compared with that of the corresponding forms of aryl hydrazides, revealing that both the neutral and enolate forms of aliphatic hydrazides are less reactive than those of the aryl hydrazides towards reduction of [IrCl 6 ] 2– . It was concluded that aryl hydrazides are more important than aliphatic ones in the development of new hydrazide-based antioxidants in the future. Additionally, the protolysis equilibria of these aliphatic hydrazides in aqueous solution and their redox properties have been characterized and the dissociation constants in the case of butyrohydrazide are reported for the first time.

Abstract:The synthesis of pyrrolidinones from reductive amination of levulinic acid (LA) with primary amines is reported. Pyrrolidinones have various applications such as surfactants, pharmaceutical intermediates, dispersants, and solvents. The half-sandwich Cp* Ir complex (Cp* is 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene) coordinated by bipyridine ligand bearing both dimethylamino and ortho-hydroxyl groups showed high catalytic activity for the reductive amination of LA. A range of primary amines, such as aromatic and benzyl amines, were readily converted to corresponding pyrrolidinones in good yields.

Abstract:This study describes a catalyst-free α-acyloxylation of ketones and a KBr-mediated α-acyloxylation of cyclic ethers. These conversions are effectively mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents serving dual roles as the oxidant and nucleophilic source. Consequently, esters are produced directly in moderate to excellent yields. The proposed method features good functional group compatibility, a broad substrate scope, and high synthetic efficiency and is remarkably environmentally friendly.

Abstract:We report herein a series of Cp*Ir complexes containing a rigid 8-aminoquinolinesulfonamide moiety as highly efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA). The complex [Cp*Ir(L)-Cl] (HL = N-(quinolin-8-yl)benzenesulfonamide) displayed a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 2.97 x 10(4) h(-1) and a good stability (>100 h) at 60 degrees C. Comparative studies of [Cp*Ir(L)Cl] with the rigid ligand and [Cp*Ir(L')Cl] (HL' = N-propylpypridine-2-sulfonamide) without the rigid aminoquinoline moiety demonstrated that the 8-aminoquinoline moiety could dramatically enhance the stability of the catalyst. The electron-donating ability of the N,N'-chelating ligand was tuned by functionalizing the phenyl group of the L ligand with OMe, Cl, and CF3 to have a systematical perturbation of the electronic structure of [Cp*Ir(L)Cl]. Experimental kinetic studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on this series of Cp*Ir complexes revealed that (i) the electron-donating groups enhance the hydrogen formation step while slowing down the beta-hydride elimination and (ii) the electron-withdrawing groups display the opposite effect on these reaction steps, which in turn leads to lower optimum pH for catalytic activity compared to the electron-donating groups.
