Abstract:A highly chemoselective conversion of α,β-disubstituted nitroalkenes to ketones is developed. An acid-compatible iridium catalyst serves as the key to the conversion. At a 2500 S/C ratio, nitroalkenes were readily converted to ketones in up to 72% isolated yields. A new mechanistic mode involving the reduction of nitroalkene to nitrosoalkene and N-alkenyl hydroxylamine is proposed. This conversion is ready to amplify to a gram-scale synthesis. The pH value plays an indispensable role in controlling the chemoselectivity.

Abstract:A highly efficient and selective Rh nanocatalyst was demonstrated for the reduction of nitroarenes with hydrazine monohydrate under mild conditions. Functional groups such as halides (F, Cl, Br and I), CN, NH2, OH, alkene, ester and amide groups were untouched during the hydrogenation of the nitroarenes, and the corresponding anilines were obtained quantitatively.

Abstract:Herein, we report an efficient one-pot iridium-catalyzed reductive hydroamination of terminal alkynes with amines. A variety of primary amines and secondary amines are amenable to this catalytic system, leading to the complicated aliphatic amines in excellent yields. More broadly, this straightforward and convenient transformation do not just employ inexpensive and easy to handle HCO 2 H as reducing agent, but also employs H 2 O as reaction media, which makes this strategy be in accordance with green and sustainable chemistry principles.

Abstract:The chemoselective catalytic reduction of nitro scaffolds to value-added amine functions is desirable but challenging. We developed a combined KOtBu/BEt3 catalyst for deoxygenative reduction of nitroarenes, nitro heteroarenes and even notoriously challenging nitroalkanes using pinacolborane under mild reaction conditions. The novel transition-metal-free strategy is readily applicable to the preparation of commercially available pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Control of chemoselectivity is a special challenge for the reduction of nitroarenes bearing one or more unsaturated groups. Here, we report a flower-like Rh/alpha-FeOOH catalyst for the chemoselective hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to vinylaniline over full conversion, which benefits the new functionalized aminostyrene because the multisubstituted aminostyrenes are usually commercially unavailable. This catalyst does not only show desirable selectivity for the vinylanilines, but also exhibits the inertness to various other reducible groups over wide reaction duration. The catalytic selectivity for the reduction of the nitro group towards vinyl group was investigated by the control experiments and FT-IR analysis. We have found that the abundant hydroxyl groups in the alpha-FeOOH may contribute to the improvement of catalytic activity and selectivity. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability and keeps its catalytic performance even after 6 cycles.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:The present work reported the convenient preparation of Pd-based catalyst over α-Fe2O3 as support via a UV light-induced reduction process. The resulting Pd/α-Fe2O3 catalyst exhibited good performance for the hydrogenation reduction of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB), yielding completely o-CNB conversion and 91.4% selectivity of o-CAN at high substrate/catalyst ratio (6000:1) under mild conditions.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a nickel catalyzed hydrogenation of alkenes with water as the sole hydrogen source. Employing Zn as reductant and water as solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of nickel catalyst led to direct hydrogenation of a series of electron-rich and electron-deficient alkenes in high yields. This protocol features unprecedented heterocycle and functional group tolerance under facile and mild conditions. Selective hydrogenation of the substrates containing additional reducible functionalities, such as alkenyl, alkynyl, chloride, ketone, and benzyl group etc, was also realized.

Abstract:The carbon wrapped magnetic nanosphere Fe3O4@C (similar to 300 nm) was prepared under simple hydrothermal conditions, and it served as the carrier of Rh nanoparticles (2-3 nm), which acted as the highly efficient catalyst for reduction of nitro compounds, and reutilization of catalyst is convenient to achieve because the catalyst particles are magnetic. A scope of nitroarene derivatives were reduced to corresponding anilines in water, and the reactions completed in 10 min with nearly quantitative conversions and 100% selectivity. In addition, the abundant oxygen-containing functionality on the carbon shell which can strongly binds the Rh-NPs to offer extraordinary stability is investigated by using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR).

Abstract:The discovery that supported gold catalysts can promote CO/H2O-mediated reduction at ambient temperatures is important to chemoselective synthesis and has gained significant attention in recent years. Whether the alternative Pt group metal (PGM) catalysts can exhibit such exceptional performance is thus an interesting research issue. So far, no PGM catalyst shows activity for CO/H2O-mediated reduction at ambient temperatures. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to transform nonactive into highly active and selective catalysts for CO/H2O-mediated reduction by modulating the interfacial structure and electronic properties at the metal-support interfaces. Thus, highly active and chemoselective hydrogenation Pt, Ir, Rh and Pd catalysts can be prepared by decorating the exposed metal faces with partially reduced support species by means of a simple catalyst activation procedure. In this way, it has been possible to dramatically facilitate the previously unappreciated PGM-catalyzed activation of CO molecules under mild conditions, which can make a significant contribution not only to reveal the intrinsic catalytic potential of supported PGMs but also to establish a more sustainable and industrially-relevant process.

Abstract:The chemical activation and functionalization of water are considered an ideal method for converting earth-abundant sources into valuable chemicals. Here, we show that a non-activated free water molecule can be applied directly as a hydrogen donor to achieve the carbanion-mediated alkene reduction with 9-HTXTF serving as an organophotocatalyst. Notably, direct syntheses of high-value-added drugs and bioactive molecules are readily achieved by utilizing plentiful energy and an earth-abundant resource, showcasing the usefulness of the protocol in chemical synthesis.

Abstract:A facile, gram-scale and sustainable approach has been established for the synthesis of single-atomic-site iron on N-doped carbon (FeSA@NC-20A) via the pyrolysis of aniline modified FeZn-ZIFs, in which the synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can be accomplished in water at room temperature, and no acid etching is required. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits better performance on the chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes with a broad substrate scope (turnover frequency (TOF) up to 1,727 h−1, 23 examples) than most of previously reported works. Based on high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), electron spin resonance (ESR), and Mössbauer spectroscopy, Fe is dispersed as single atoms via forming FeNx (x = 4–6). This work not only determines the active sites of FeSA@NC-20A for hydrogenation (FeN4), but also proposes tentative pathways for both N-H activation of hydrazine and the reduction of nitroarene on FeN4 site, both of which are the key steps for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. In addition, this catalyst shows excellent stability, and no significant activity degradation is observed when recycling for 10 times or restoring in air for 2 months.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to arylamines is a great challenge because of the complicated mechanism and competitive hydrogenation of reducible functional groups. Isolated single-atomic site catalysts, benefitting from their uniform and well-defined catalytic sites, are promising to achieve high activity and selectivity. Herein, we prepared an isolated iron single-atomic catalyst supported on ordered mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe1/N-C). The as-prepared Fe1/N-C showed excellent activity and tolerance for functional groups in the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes over hydrazine hydrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the single atomically dispersed, partially positively charged Fe atoms and the lowered energy barrier collectively contribute to the superior hydrogenation performances for nitroarenes.

Abstract:An example is reported for using green and inexpensive water as the reductant and the proton source to enable photocatalytic hydrogenation of alkenes under an unprecedented cooperative catalysis between Pt/g‐C3N4 and HCl, in which HCl can accelerate the desired water oxidation half‐reaction and suppress the undesired oxidation of alkenes. Utilization of clean and low‐cost water as the reductant to enable hydrogenation of alkenes is highly attractive in green chemistry. However, this research subject is considerably challenging due to the sluggish kinetics of the water oxidation half‐reaction. It is also very difficult to avoid the undesired oxidation of alkenes because that this oxidation is far easier to occur than the desired oxidation of water from thermodynamic standpoint. Herein, this challenge is overcome by applying a cooperative catalysis where HCl is used as the cocatalyst to accelerate Pt/g‐C3N4‐catalyzed water oxidation and suppress the undesired oxidation of the alkene. This provides an example for using water as the reductant and the proton source to enable the photocatalytic hydrogenation of alkenes. The present method exhibits broad substrate applicability, and allows various arylethenes and aliphatic alkenes to undergo the hydrogenation smoothly.
