Abstract:Methods toward the dimerization and homocoupling of terminal alkynes have been established that employ Co complexes along with tBuOK under different atmosphere. A variety of Z-1,3-enynes were furnished with a high Z:E (up to 93:7) ratio in moderate to very good yields under inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the Glaser homocoupling reaction of terminal alkynes was also accomplished with a Co catalyst, successfully affording various 1,3-diynes in excellent yields (up to 93%) under oxygen.

Abstract:Catalytic semireduction of internal alkynes to alkenes is very important for organic synthesis. Although great success has been achieved in this area, switchable Z/E stereoselectivity based on a single catalyst for the semireduction of internal alkynes is a longstanding challenge due to the multi-chemo- and stereoselectivity, especially based on less-expensive earth-abundant metals. Herein, we describe a switchable semireduction of alkynes to (Z)- or (E)-alkenes catalyzed by a dinuclear cobalt complex supported by a macrocyclic bis pyridyl diimine (PDI) ligand. It was found that cis-reduction of the alkyne occurs first and the Z–E alkene stereoisomerization process is formally controlled by the amount of H2O, since the concentration of H2O may influence the catalytic activity of the catalyst for isomerization. Therefore, this protocol provides a facile way to switch to either the (Z)- or (E)-olefin isomer in a single transformation by adjusting the amount of water.

Abstract:Direct utilization of allylic alcohols as allylic reagents without metal reductants has drawn significant attention. Herein, we report a practical, diastereoselective photoredox/Ni(II)-dual-catalyzed reductive allylation reaction of aldehydes with readily accessible allylic alcohols in the presence of CO2. This methodology allows the branched regioselective direct allylation of a wide range of aldehydes with various allylic alcohols in good to high yield and up to >20:1 d.r. ratio. Accurate DFT calculations revealed the rationale behind the diastereoselectivity differences via Zimmerman-Traxler transition state for different substrates, while also delineated the energetically most favorable mechanistic pathway for this allylation reaction.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Carboxylation of allylic alcohols with carbon dioxide is accomplished by photoredox/nickel dual catalysis, generating linear acids exclusively with good Z/E stereoselectivity. Hantzsch ester is employed as the reductant instead of stoichiometric metallic reductants, and the reaction can be conducted under room temperature with a blue LED light source. Mechanistic studies reveal that the presence of water in this catalytic system is critical to the success of the reaction, and the reaction is more likely to proceed in oxidative addition of the in situ formed allylic hydrogen carbonate.

Abstract:A Co-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective reductive coupling of alkynes and aldehydes has been developed under visible light photoredox dual catalysis. A variety of enantioenriched allylic alcohols have been obtained by using unsymmetrical internal alkynes and commercially available catalyst, chiral ligand, and reagents. Abstract:Herein, we report an efficient one-pot iridium-catalyzed reductive hydroamination of terminal alkynes with amines. A variety of primary amines and secondary amines are amenable to this catalytic system, leading to the complicated aliphatic amines in excellent yields. More broadly, this straightforward and convenient transformation do not just employ inexpensive and easy to handle HCO 2 H as reducing agent, but also employs H 2 O as reaction media, which makes this strategy be in accordance with green and sustainable chemistry principles.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a nickel catalyzed hydrogenation of alkenes with water as the sole hydrogen source. Employing Zn as reductant and water as solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of nickel catalyst led to direct hydrogenation of a series of electron-rich and electron-deficient alkenes in high yields. This protocol features unprecedented heterocycle and functional group tolerance under facile and mild conditions. Selective hydrogenation of the substrates containing additional reducible functionalities, such as alkenyl, alkynyl, chloride, ketone, and benzyl group etc, was also realized.

Abstract:α-Diazoesters belong to significantly important carbenoid precursors in synthetic chemistry, diazomethylation-based difunctionalization of alkenes is highly valuable but remain nontrivial. Herein, we reported a general and modular approach for the direct 1,2-hydroxyl-diazomethylation of alkenes through visible-light photoredox catalysis. This process exploits photocatalyzed strategy to convert alkenes to γ-hydroxyl-α-diazoesters using α-diazo iodonium salts as carbyne precursors, featuring wide substrate tolerance and broad late-stage diversiﬁcations. Mechanistic studies suggest that the formation of γ-carbocation-tethered α-diazoesters plays a crucial role in trapping H2O to allow for this transformation.

Abstract:We introduce an innovative nickel/photoredox dual catalytic sulfonyl-arylation method for synthesizing heterocyclic compounds directly from unactivated alkynes and aryl iodides. This green chemistry approach sidesteps traditional Heck reactions, eliminating reliance on excess metal catalysts and reagents. The method ensures high chemical selectivity, curbing side reactions and facilitating the stereoselective 6-exo-dig cyclization. It simplifies the production of nitrogen- or oxygen-containing heterocyclics, such as 3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-ones, tetrahydroisoquinolines, and isochroman derivatives, with potential applications in medicinal chemistry. The dual catalytic system enhances reactivity with unactivated substrates, marking a significant step in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:Abstract A base-assisted metal species modulation mechanism enables Ni-catalyzed stereodivergent transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes with water, delivering both olefinic isomers smoothly using cheap and nontoxic catalysts and additives. Different from most precedents, in which E -alkenes derive from the isomerization of Z -alkene products, the isomers were formed in orthogonal catalytic pathways. Mechanistic studies suggest base as a key early element in modulation of the reaction pathways: by adding different bases, nickel species with disparate valence states could be accessed to initiate two catalytic cycles toward different stereoisomers. The practicability of the method is showcased with nearly 70 examples, including internal and terminal triple bonds, enynes and diynes, affording semi-hydrogenated products in high yields and selectivity.
