Abstract:The effect of Ti/Cr additive on He diffusion and segregation properties in dilute vanadium alloys is investigated using first-principles calculations. First we determined the He preference site and investigated the He-Cr/He-Ti interactions. Energetically, He prefers to segregate to Ti regions rather than Cr regions. The most stable site for interstitial He is a tetrahedral site near Ti. He-Ti interactions have a weak attraction while He-Cr interactions have a weak repulsion. Kinetically, He diffusion to Ti has a lower energy barrier; contrarily the He barrier increases towards Cr. Furthermore, we discuss the stability of He-n-Cr/Ti complexes and He-n-vacancy-Cr and Ti complexes with n = 1-8. It is found that the HenTi complexes are more stable than the HenCr complexes while the Hen-vacancy-Ti complexes are less favorable than He-n-vacancy-Cr. The findings give a reference for understanding the mechanism of He embrittlement under irradiation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Microstructural analysis of the thermal fatigue tested Be/CuCrZr joint with artificial defects between Ti/Cu interlayers

Abstract:The ITER enhanced-heat-flux (EHF) FW fingers undertook by China are made by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) method to bond beryllium armor tiles to CuCrZr/316L(N) heat sinks with 10 mu m-thick Ti coating on beryllium tiles and 0.5 mm-thick oxygen free copper sheet as interlayer. To study its thermal fatigue behavior, small scale mock-up was manufactured with artificial defects (AD) on the beryllium tile surface with Ti coating. Thermal cycling of the mockup was carried out at 4.7 MW/m2 high heat flux (HHF) for 5000 cycles. The interface between Be/Ti/Cu and the fracture surface on beryllium tiles were observed by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy spectrometer. The Be/Ti/Cu interfacial phase composition and the behaviors of defects after high heat flux test were analyzed. In addition, the generation and propagation mechanism of thermal fa-tigue defects were preliminarily studied in this paper. The results show that uniform bonding between Be and Cu was achieved and the interfacial phases are Be base/ Be-Ti intermediate/ alpha-Ti/ Ti2Cu/ TiCu /Cu base in the sequence. The formation of complex brittle phases reported in previous study, such as Ti3Cu4 or alpha-TiCu4, can be avoided by using Ti single interlayer. When the original defect dimension is only 3 x 3 mm2, the defect will not propagate after 5000 cycles 4.7 MW/m2 HHF testing (HHFT). Besides, decreasing beryllium tile size can reduce the possibility of thermal fatigue failure. In addition, from the research on fracture surface on beryllium tiles, the final fracture made for beryllium detachment mainly happened in Ti layer near the beryllium side. While thermal fatigue cracks preferentially originated at Be/Ti interface and the oxidation of beryllium surface under thermal cycling test would accelerate the generation and propagation of thermal fatigue defects.

Abstract:The chemical bonding and elastic properties as well as the effect of atomic radii for A element in the Ti3AC2 phases (A=Si, Ge, and Sn) were studied by ab initio total energy calculations using plane-wave pseudopotential method based on DFT. The atomic radii of A element has a weak effect on the electronic structure. However, the bond stiffness was quantitatively examined, which shows that the bond stiffness is affected by the atomic radii of A element. The calculated results including lattice constants, internal coordinate, elastic modulus, sound velocity, and Debye temperature agree with experimental values very well. With the increase of atomic radii of A element from Si, Ge to Sn, the cohesive energy and elastic moduli as well as Debye temperature decrease, but the elastic anisotropy increases. This is related to the change of bond stiffness. It can be predicted that the fracture toughness of Ti3SnC2 would be comparable with that of Ti3SiC2 and Ti3GeC2.

Abstract:First-principles calculations within density functional theory have been carried out to investigate α2 phase in the Ti3Al based alloy with Zr, Hf, and Sn (6.25at%) elements doped. The lattice constants, total energies and elastic constants were calculated for the supercells. The formation enthalpies, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, and intrinsic hardness were investigated. The ductility of the doped α2 phases was analyzed by the Cauchy pressure, G/B and Poisson’s ratio. The results show that the substitution of Ti(6 h) by Zr, Hf, and the substitution of Al(2n) by Sn can make the doped α2 phase more stable. The inflexibility and hardness of α2 phase can be enhanced by doping with Zr and Hf, while Sn brings the opposite effect. Sn is more powerful to improve the ductility of the doped α2 phase than Hf, but Zr can increase the brittleness. The densities of states (DOS and PDOS) and the difference charge density are obtained to reveal the underlying mechanism of the effect of alloying elements.

Abstract:To better understanding the effect of group-A atoms on the properties in Ti 2 AC (A = Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) compounds, the phase stability, elastic properties, electronic structures and thermal properties of the compounds were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The results revealed that the A-site elements affect largely the lattice constant c than the lattice constant a . The compounds are thermodynamically and mechanically stable. Ti 2 SiC has higher bulk modulus with 163.7 GPa, which makes it has higher compression resistance among the Ti 2 AC family. Ti 2 InC has the lowest hardness because of it has the smallest shear modulus (103.8 GPa) and C 44 (95.1 GPa) among the Ti 2 AC family. The chemical bond of all compounds is a combination of metallic and covalent bonds characteristic. In addition, Ti 2 AlC has the largest Debye temperature of 751.5 K, while Ti 2 InC and Ti 2 SnC possess the smallest value of 546.9 K, which indicate that Ti 2 InC and Ti 2 SnC compounds are potential materials for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. This work will provide a valuable theoretical basis for further study of Ti 2 AC ternary carbides with excellent mechanical and thermal properties.

Abstract:The diffusion path of single He atom in Ti3SiC2 was investigated by first principle calculations, showing that the He atoms generated homogenously in the material will quickly migrate into the Si layer at higher temperatures (>500°C) although a small fraction of them may be trapped by vacancies in the C layer at room temperature. Our further calculations showed that the largest He clusters formed in the Si layer consists of no more than 7 He atoms, corresponding to volume swelling of only 2% at most, and the other He atoms may flow into the grain boundaries because the barrier for a He atom diffusing in the Si layer is only 0.05eV. These results indicate that Ti3SiC2 owns good tolerance of He damage.
Tensile Properties and Fracture Mechanism of the Ti2AlC(0001)/TiAl(111) Interface: Insights from a First-Principles Study

Abstract:A combination of three methods, Griffith theory, work of interface separation, and first-principles tensile simulations, has been applied to uncover the Ti2AlC/TiAl interface’s tensile properties and fracture mechanisms. The results show that the three methods give consistent fracture locations when considering the interface elastic energy for work of interface separation, i.e., C-hcp-hollow-BCA fractures inside the TiAl bulk, while Al-fcc-hollow-ACB, Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC, and Ti(Al)-hcp-hollow-BAC all fracture at the interface; Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC has a maximum critical strain (20%) and the strongest ideal tensile strength (29.32 GPa), because it has a greater deformation energy at the inflection point and it doesn’t fracture when Ti(Al)-hcp-hollow-BAC is fully fractured, and the PDOS shape of the interface’s Ti atoms exhibits a higher degree of consistency during the tensile process, and the C atoms of the Ti2AlC-2 layer in the Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC exert a strong influence on the Ti atoms at the interface; the fracture mechanism of the Ti2AlC/TiAl interface structure includes the formation of electron holes, the holes increasing, the formation of microcracks, microcracks increasing, the formation of electron depletion region due to a sharp increase in the bond length and the interlayer spacing, followed by a complete fracture.
The Combined Effects of an External Field and Novel Functional Groups on the Structural and Electronic Properties of TMDs/Ti3C2 Heterostructures: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:The stacking of Ti3C2 with transition metal dihalide (TMDs) materials is an effective strategy to improve the physical properties of a single material, and the tuning of the related properties of these TMDs/Ti3C2 heterostructures is also an important scientific problem. In this work, we systematically investigated the effects of an external field and novel functional groups (S, Se, Cl, Br) on the structural and electronic properties of TMDs/Ti3C2X2 heterostructures. The results revealed that the lattice parameters and interlayer distance of TMDs/Ti3C2 increased with the addition of functional groups. Both tensile and compressive strain obviously increased the interlayer distance of MoS2/Ti3C2X2 (X = S, Se, Cl, Br) and MoSe2/Ti3C2X2 (X = Se, Br). In contrast, the interlayer distance of MoSe2/Ti3C2X2 (X = S, Cl) decreased with increasing compressive strain. Furthermore, the conductivity of TMDs/Ti3C2 increased due to the addition of functional groups (Cl, Br). Strain caused the bandgap of TMDs to narrow, and effectively adjusted the electronic properties of TMDs/Ti3C2X2. At 9% compressive strain, the conductivity of MoSe2/Ti3C2Cl2 increased significantly. Meanwhile, for TMDs/Ti3C2X2, the conduction band edge (CBE) and valence band edge (VBE) at the M and K points changed linearly under an electric field. This study provides valuable insight into the combined effects of an external field and novel functional groups on the related properties of TMDs/Ti3C2X2.

Abstract:This study investigates the dissolution and diffusion of H atom in TiCrTaV of two body-centered cubic (BCC) high-entropy alloys and their effects on the mechanical properties and electronic structure of the alloys by first-principles calculations. Results show that the solution energy of H atom and local lattice distortion vary depending on the local environment. Meanwhile, the site occupancy of H atoms in tetrahedral interstitials are slightly advantageous in the two structures. Diffusion of H also presents a sluggish effect. The dramatic increases and decreases of diffusion barrier disrupted the periodicity and symmetry of H diffusion in the two BCC structures, thereby slowing down the H accumulation. After hydrogenation, TiCrTaV high-entropy alloys (HEAs) still maintain resistance to deformation, indicating that they are the potential candidate structural materials for fusion reactors. Our investigation indicates that this low-activation HEA may exhibit promising irradiation resistance due to its special H behavior.

Abstract:The strengthening method of multi-element M-site solid solution is a common approach to improve mechanical properties of MAX phase ceramic. However, the research on capability of multi-element A-site solid solution to improve mechanical properties has rarely been reported. Thereupon, quasi-high-entropy MAX phase ceramic bulks of Ti2(Al1−xAx)C and Ti3(Al1−xAx)C2 (A = Ga, In, Sn, x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) were successfully synthesized by in situ vacuum hot pressing via multi-elements solid solution. The multi-elements solid solution in single-atom thick A layer was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mappings. Effects of doped multi-elements contents on the phase, microstructure, mechanical properties, and high temperature tribological behaviors were studied. Results demonstrated that the Vickers hardness, anisotropic flexural strength, fracture toughness, and tribological properties of Ti–Al–C based MAX ceramics could be remarkably improved by constitution of quasi-high-entropy MAX phase in A layers. Moreover, the strengthening and wear mechanisms were also discussed in detail. This method of multi-element solid solution at A-site provides new way to enhance mechanical properties of other MAX phase ceramics.

Abstract:By use of the self-consistent field Xalpha scattered-wave method, the electronic structure was calculated for two models of the Ti6Al12X (X=Al, Cr, or Mn) cluster for the tetragonal DO22 crystal structure as well as the Ti4Al14X (X=Al, Cr, or Mn) cluster for the cubic Ll2 Crystal structure in Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds for contrast. The results are presented for density of states and one-electron properties, such as the relative binding tendency between the atom and the model cluster and the hybrid bonding tendency between the atoms introduced by us. Comparisons are made among the three models of the Ti6Al12X cluster, among those of the Ti4Al14X cluster, and between Ti6Al12X and Ti4Al14X clusters. The effect of the Cr or Mn atom on the physical properties of Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds is analyzed. The calculations indicate that the addition of the Cr or Mn atom weakens the relative binding tendency between the Ti2 atom and the Ti6Al12X cluster and intensifies that between the Ti1 atom and the Ti4Al14X cluster. Thus the addition of the Cr or Mn atom may promote crystal structure transformation from DO22 to Ll2 in Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds. Comparison of the density of states between the Ti6Al12X and Ti4Al14X clusters shows that the stable crystal structure for a given compound is the one in which the Fermi level E(F) lies in or comes near a minimum in the density of states. The calculation also shows that the Cr or Mn atom strengthens the hybrid bonding tendency between the central atom and the host atoms for the Ti6Al12X and Ti4Al14X clusters and thereby may lead to the constriction of the lattice constant of Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds. The results also show that the addition of the Cr or Mn atom provides more d electrons to strengthen the p-d and d-d directional bondings for the Ti6Al12X and the Ti4Al14X clusters. Thus, Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds with the addition of the Cr or Mn atom still remain brittle.
Electronic-Structure Effect on Model Cluster for L1(2) Structure of Al3ti Intermetallic Compound with an Addition of Alloying Elements Fe, Ni and Cu

The Ti(4)Al(14)X cluster was developed based on L1(2) Al3Ti-base intermetallic compound. The results are presented using the density of states (DOS) and one-electron properties, such as relative binding tendency between the atom and the model cluster, and hybrid bonding tendency between the alloying element and the host atoms. By comparing the four models of Ti(4)Al(14)X cluster, the effect of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom on the physical properties of Al3Ti-based L1(2) intermetallic compounds is analyzed. The results indicate that the addition of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom intensifies the relative binding tendency between Ti atom and Ti(4)Al(14)X cluster. It was found that the Fermi level (E(F)) lies in a maximum in the DOS for Ti4Al14Al cluster; pn the contrary, the E(F) comes near a minimum in the DOS for Ti(4)Al(14)X(X=Fe, Ni and Cu) cluster. Thus the L1(2) crystal structure for binary Al3Ti alloy is unstable, and the addition of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom to Al3Ti is benefical to stabilize L1(2) crystal structure. The calculation also shows that the Fe, Ni or Cu atom strengthens the hybrid bonding tendency between the central atom and the host atoms for Ti(4)Al(14)X cluster and thereby may lead to the constriction of the lattice of Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds.
First Principles Investigation of the Effects of Chemical Short-Range Ordering Clusters on the Ideal Tensile Strength and Ductility of Aluminum Alloys

Abstract:As important structural features of the metal materials, chemical short-range ordering clusters play a critical role in the mechanical properties of the materials. They have been discovered in dilute Al-alloy systems and are usually generated by annealing processes at high temperatures or by severe plastic deformation at room temperature. In the present work, systematic first-principle calculations were conducted to evaluate the influences of the chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr on the mechanical properties of the pure Al supercell. Results showed that the mechanical properties including both ideal tensile strength and ductility were improved simultaneously when the chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr were introduced to the pure Al. The larger the volume fraction of chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr, the larger the ideal tensile strength. The deformation charge density, the electron localization function and the density of state were computed to reveal the nature of the strengthening of the chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr on the pure Al supercell. It was found that excellent ideal tensile strength for the Al supercell with the chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr was due to strong charge accumulations and strong electronic interactions between the solute atoms Zr and the host Al atoms. In addition, the Pugh ratio (B/G) and ratio (Wsep/Gdisl) of the work of the separation Wsep to the work of dislocation emission Gdisl were computed to reveal the effect of the chemical short-range ordering clusters L12-Al3Zr on the ductility of the Al supercell. Results showed that the addition of L12-Al3Zr chemical short-range ordering clusters addition to pure Al supercell brought about an increase in ductility as compared to pure Al supercell, which is ascribed to large the Pugh ratio B/G and ratio (Wsep/Gdisl) of the work of the separation Wsep to the work of dislocation emission Gdisl. This work is important for simultaneously improving the tensile strength and ductility of Al alloys.

Role of the A-Element in the Structural, Mechanical, and Electronic Properties of Ti 3 AC 2 MAX Phases

Abstract:Combining metallic and ceramic properties, and as precursors for MXenes, MAX phases have attracted extensive attention. In recent years, A-element substitution has been demonstrated as an effective scheme to enrich the MAX family. To explore more possible MAX members, the structural, mechanical, and electronic properties and stabilities of 31 Ti3AC2 (A = Al, Si, P, S, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, TI, Pb, Bi, and Po) configurations are investigated in this work. Moreover, the interfacial strength implicating the possibility of exfoliating MAX into MXenes is examined. The A-element plays a crucial role in the lattice parameters and mechanical strength of Ti3AC2, and their variations are well explained by the synergistic effects of d-d and p-d hybridizations between the valence orbitals of Ti and A. Ti3SC2 presents the largest Young's modulus of 360 GPa, which is 6.82% higher than that in the well-studied Ti3SiC2. Ti3SbC2 is a mechanical quasi-isotropic configuration. After checking the mechanical, dynamical, and thermodynamic stability, Ti3AC2 (A = Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Au, Hg, Pb, TI, and Po) are stable, while Ti3AC2 (A = Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Te, Ir, Pt, and Bi) are metastable. Compared to Ti3AlC2, Ti3AC2 (A = Ag, Sb, Te, Bi, and Po) exhibit much lower interfacial strength in Ti-A interfaces and larger ratios between the interfacial strengths of neighboring Ti-C and Ti-A interfaces. This implies that these configurations are promising precursors for the synthesis of Ti3C2Tx (Tx denotes surface groups) with a large flake size. All of the configurations are metallic, and Ti3AC2 (A = Fe and Co) are magnetic. Based on the phonon dispersion and electronic structure, these Ti3AC2 configurations might have potential applications in phononic crystals and topological materials.

Abstract:The work adopted the method of combining calculations and experiments to explore the mechanism of the influence of Ti content on the microstructure and properties of AlCoCrFeNiTi x high-entropy alloy coatings. The change mechanism of the Ti molar ratio was analyzed concerning the phase, microstructure, and properties of the coating based on the first principles. The results showed that AlCoCrFeNiTi x HEAs were BCC single-phase solid solutions. The lattice constant increased with the increased Ti molar ratio, and the density decreased as the ratio increased. The coating structure was composed of equiaxed grains, and the addition of Ti could significantly refine the grains. The theoretical structural mechanics was stable with the Ti molar ratio ≥ 0.8. The experimental results showed that the average microhardness of the coating increased with increased Ti content. The friction coefficient together with the wear area was reduced, while the wear resistance was enhanced. The coating-wear mechanisms changed from adhesive wear to abrasive wear. The experimental results agree with the pattern of first-principles calculations. The research results of the work can provide a theoretical reference and basis for the composition design, synthesis, and performance research of laser cladding high-entropy alloy materials.

Abstract:The effects of Zr doping on the properties of the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase and the behavior of helium are investigated by first-principles calculations. The doping of Zr at different non-equivalent Wyckoff positions, including Ti1 and Ti2, in the Ti3SiC2 is considered. The lattice parameters and the interlayer spacing of Ti3SiC2 are slightly expanded due to the substitution of Ti by Zr. Compared with Ti1 positions, the substitution of Ti2 positions by Zr has a greater impact on the electronic properties of the Ti3SiC2 system. Meanwhile, He interstitials energetically prefer to occupy the Ti2-Si layer for both the Zr-substituted and the original Ti3SiC2 systems. And the interaction between He and its nearby atoms is weakened more dramatically with Zr doping into Ti2, compared to Ti1. This results in the solution energy of He interstitials decreasing upon Zr substitution for Ti in Ti3SiC2, especially, the substitution of Zr for Ti2. The doped Zr may play a positive role in the resistance of Ti3SiC2 to helium damage.

Abstract:To understand the role of α-Fe/TaC interface on the clustering behavior of helium (He) atoms inside castable nanostructured alloys under irradiation, we built two models (Ta13C14@Fe215 and {100}<110>Fe//{100}<100>TaC interface) and perform systemical ab initio calculations to investigate the energetics of point defects (vacancy, anti-site defect and He), substitutional defect clusters CrFem (1 ≤ m ≤ 4), and Hen (1 ≤ n ≤ 4) clusters, the migration behavior of He atom as well as the effect of Cr atoms and vacancies on the stability of Hen clusters. Vacancy and He at the α-Fe/TaC interface of the Ta13C14@Fe215 are more stable than that in Ta13C14 cluster and Fe matrix. Ta atom at this interface escapes from the lattice site more easily than C atom. In addition, the Cr atoms substituting Fe sites are more stable than Fe vacancies, which reduces the formation energies of Hen clusters in α-Fe/TaC on the Ta13C14@Fe215. Both formation energy and migration energy of He atom in {100}<110>Fe//{100}<100>TaC interface are lower than those in bulk TaC and α-Fe. Hence, {100}<110>Fe//{100}<100>TaC interface as a sink can trap more helium atoms and vacancies than α-Fe matrix.

Abstract:The phase stability and mechanical properties of Ti2AC (A=Ga, Cd, Sn, In, and Pb) have close relationship with the behavior of group-A element atoms in these compounds. This letter shows that although the Al, Ga, and In (or Si, Sn, and Pb) are in the same group, the migration energy and vacancy formation energy of group-A atom in Ti2GaC/Ti2InC (or Ti2SnC/Ti2PbC) are noticeable lower than those in Ti2AlC (or Ti3SiC2). The present results are helpful for a better understanding of easy out diffusion and self-extrusion of group-A atoms in these compounds.

Abstract:AlCoCrFeNiTi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted much attention because of their excellent mechanical properties. Here, we systemically studied the effects of elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlCoCrFeNiTi HEAs. The results showed that the phase composition and morphology are significantly affected by the elements. With increasing Ti addition, the lattice parameters of the solid solution phase increased slightly, and lattice distortion occurred. Al changes the crystal structure of FCC to BCC and reduces the lattice distortion energy of the alloy. The BCC phase obviously increases with increasing Al content. However, excessive Al, Ti and Cr promote the formation of intermetallic compound phases, while Ni, Fe and Co promote the transformation of the alloy into a solid solution. The properties of AlCoCrFeNiTi HEAs are closely related to their phase composition and morphology. When HEAs consist only of FCC and BCC phases, their ductility and strength are greatly improved. The presence of an intermetallic compound phase in the microstructure can significantly reduce the configurational entropy of adjacent solid solutions, thus reducing the strengthening effect of solid solutions. Additionally, the AlCoCrFeNiTi HEAs with different microstructures show different deformation mechanisms. The deformation of FCC + BCC HEAs with cellular structures is uniform and presents great plasticity and strength. When the cellular-structure HEAs contain equiaxed BCC, thick lamellar BCC/FCC or intermetallic compound phases, cracks tend to occur and propagate along the phase boundary due to the local nonuniform deformation. For AlCoCrFeNiTi HEAs with dendrite structures, after initiation at the phase boundary, the crack does not easily spread to the dendrite FCC phase but causes the interdendritic BCC phase to crack.

Abstract:The elastic constants and the mechanical properties of doped Ti3Al alloys are studied by using embedded-atom method. The calculated formation enthalpies and volumes of some Ti75-xAl25-yMx+y (M = V, Nb and Ta) decrease with increasing the additional concentrations. The effects of mechanical properties are different by doping different elements. As a result, small amounts of doping Nb and Ta elements would reduce the fracture of Ti3Al alloy; while Nb and Ta doping into Ti sites would improves the hardness. Most doped Ti3Al are good ductile materials and the alloying elements Nb and Ta significant decrease the brittleness. Our results consist with the experiments.
