Abstract:Organic additives with amino moieties are effective in improving the properties of archetypical formamidinium (FA)-based hybrid perovskites for photovoltaic and light-emitting applications. However, a detailed understanding of how amino additives affect the perovskite materials is lacking, impeding developments in this area. Here, by investigating the interactions of lead bromide perovskite precursors with phenethylamine (PEA) and its derivatives with small variations in chemical structure, we reveal that only the secondary amine (N-methyl-2-phenylethylamine (N-PEA)) results in strengthened hydrogen bonds with FABr in precursor solutions, allowing the formation of high-quality perovskite films. The photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs) of the resultant perovskite samples on widely used charge-transport substrates are retained to 82% of their original values, indicating reduced sensitivity to interfacial nonradiative traps critical to device applications. Using a standard device structure, green perovskite light-emitting diodes with peak external quantum efficiencies of 12.7% at ∼500 cd m-2 and operational lifetimes (T50) exceeding 10 h (at 100 cd m-2) are obtained.
Enhanced Moisture Stability of Cesium‐Containing Compositional Perovskites by a Feasible Interfacial Engineering

Abstract:The compositional perovskites have attracted broad attention due to the improved photovoltaic performance and enhanced stability compared with the single cation perovskite, such as methylammonium lead iodide and formamidinium lead iodide. In this study, the moisture stability of the widely used cesium and bromide-containing mixed perovskites is carefully studied by characterizing the morphology, crystallization, and device performance before and after the exposure to moisture. Though the mixed perovskites possess strong resistance to moisture in the ambient air, a rapid degradation is observed when the perovskites are exposed to a high relative humidity (RH) up to 70%. The degradation is evidenced by the obvious appearance of CsPbI3 phase along with needle-like morphology after several hours' storage in 70% RH. Moreover, to suppress the erosion of perovskites by the high-level moisture, an interfacial engineering is introduced with phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI). The PEAI passivation not only shows a retarded degradation but also delivers an enhanced photovoltaic performance from 13% to > 17% with much improved stability under high-level moisture. The results imply the efficacy of interfacial engineering in fabricating high-efficiency and stable perovskite solar cells.
Ab initio study of the moisture stability of lead iodine perovskites

Abstract:The stability of hybrid lead iodine perovskite in a humid environment has been a major obstacle to developing long-term photovoltaic devices. However, understanding the detailed degradation mechanism of lead iodine perovskite in moisture is still challenging. Herein, using first-principles calculations, we show that embedded water molecules will facilitate the decomposition of lead iodine perovskite. Alloying FAPbI3 and CsPbI3 to form mixed-cation lead iodine perovskites not only can optimize the tolerance factor to obtain better phase stability, but also can improve the moisture stability of them. With the accumulation of water molecules in the perovskite lattice, the optical absorption spectra show a blue-shift and decreased intensity, and the moisture stabilities of lead iodine perovskites are further lowered. The iodine vacancy in lead iodine perovskites can facilitate the water molecule migration and thus is a disadvantage in improving the moisture stability of them, which should be minimized during perovskite growth. These findings provide new insight in understanding the poor moisture stability of lead iodine perovskites, which should be helpful for the future design and optimization of stable perovskite solar cells.
Improved Crystallinity and Self-Healing Effects in Perovskite Solar Cells Via Functional Incorporation of Polyvinylpyrrolidone

Abstract:Air moisture is the key issue for perovskites which invades the films and accelerates the damage of devices. Here, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is introduced to the methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite precursor to control crystal growth and endow the devices with self-healing ability in a moisture environment. The strong C = O center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen bonding interactions between PVP and MAPbI(3) was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. By introducing hydrogen bonding in the MAPbI(3)-based PSCs, we form a compact perovskite film of excellent electronic quality with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 20.32%. Furthermore, the O center dot center dot center dot H-N hydrogen bonding interactions at the grain boundaries suppress the decomposition of methylammonium cations and improve the recyclable dissolution-recrystallization of perovskite. As a result, the MAPbI(3)-PVP based cells exhibited striking moisture stability and self-healing behavior, with negligible decay in efficiency after 500 h of operation in high humidity (65% +/- 5% relative humidity) and rapid recovering ability after their removal from the humid environment. A Universal Strategy of Intermolecular Exchange to Stabilize α ‐FAPbI 3 and Manage Crystal Orientation for High‐Performance Humid‐Air‐Processed Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Preparation of high-performance perovskite solar cells without strict environmental control is an inevitable trend of commercialization. Humidity is considered the main factor hindering perovskite performance. Formamidine (FA)-based perovskites suffer from the instability of photoactive black α-FAPbI3, especially in humid air, and numerous defects in the surface and bulk of perovskite films limit their performance. In this work, long-chain n-heptylamine (nHA) is introduced via antisolvent engineering into an FA-based perovskite film. nHA removes the negative intermediate adduct and promotes the formation of α-FAPbI3 at room temperature in humid air via intermolecular exchange behavior. Moreover, the existence of nHA in the final perovskite film also reduces the defects and suppresses ion migration. The champion device delivers a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.7% (certificated 22.76%) with negligible hysteresis, and the fabricated devices exhibit superior reproductivity. The device stability is also enhanced, maintaining 95% of its initial PCE after 1500 h in ambient air. Moreover, the PCE has no attenuation at the maximum power point under continuous 1-sun light soaking for 500 h. The universality of this method is also demonstrated by other perovskite compositions, including methylamine lead iodine (MAPbI3 ) and FAx MA1- x PbI3 in humid air.

Enhanced Optoelectronic Quality of Perovskite Films with Excess CH3NH3I for High-Efficiency Solar Cells in Ambient Air

Abstract:Solution-processed polycrystalline perovskite films contribute critically to the high photovoltaic performance of perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs). The inevitable electronic trap states at grain boundaries and intrinsic defects such as metallic lead (Pb0) and halide vacancies in perovskite films cause serious carrier recombination loss. Furthermore, the film can easily decompose into PbI2 in a moist atmosphere. Here, we introduce a simple strategy, through a small increase in methylammonium iodide (CH3NH3I, MAI), molar proportion (5%), for perovskite fabrication in ambient air with ∼50% relative humidity. Analysis of the morphology and crystallography demonstrates that excess MAI significantly promotes grain growth without decomposition. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that no metallic Pb0 exists in the perovskite film and the I/Pb ratio is improved. A time-resolved photoluminescence measurement indicates efficient suppression of non-radiative recombination in the perovskite layer. As a result, the device yields improved power conversion efficiency from 14.06% to 18.26% with reduced hysteresis and higher stability under AM1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2). This work strongly provides a feasible and low-cost way to develop highly efficient PSCs in ambient air.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHP) have attracted a great deal of attention as promising light-emitting materials, because of their low-cost production via simple solution processing, high color purity, and easily tunable bandgaps. Nevertheless, the fabrication of OIHP films for light-emitting diodes generally requires complicated post-treatments, such as an anti-solvent dripping process, owing to the poor film forming property of the perovskite precursor solution. In this work, we employed an ionic liquid, methylammonium acetate (MAAc), as an additive to optimize the growth of FAPbBr(3)perovskite films via an anti-solvent-free approach. The influence of MAAc on the crystallization kinetics of FAPbBr(3)phase and optoelectronic properties of the resulting perovskite films have been systematically investigated. Our results demonstrate that MAAc is an effective modifier for creating perovskite films with reduced grain size, homogeneous grain distribution, and smooth surface, leading to an enhanced average lifetime of the excitons. Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) containing FAPbBr(3)films obtained via incorporating 10 vol% MAAc as an additive exhibited considerably suppressed leakage current, and a significant enhancement in current efficiency (CE) from 0.027 to 4.85 cd A(-1). These findings reveal that the incorporation of a suitable additive could play a beneficial role in the formation of well-optimized perovskite films, which would ultimately lead to the realization of PeLEDs with improved performance.

Abstract:Formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) has a broader absorption spectrum and better thermal stability than the most famous methylammonium lead iodide, thus exhibiting great potential for photovoltaic applications. In this report, the light‐induced photoluminescence (PL) evolution in FAPbI3 thin films is investigated. The PL intensity evolution is found to be strongly dependent on the atmosphere surrounding the samples. When the film is exposed to air, its photoluminescence intensity is enhanced more than 140 times after continuous ultraviolet laser illumination for 2 h, and the average lifetime is prolonged from 17 to 389 ns. The enhanced photoluminescence implies that the trap density is significantly reduced. The comparative study of the photoluminescence properties in air, nitrogen, and oxygen/helium environment suggests that moisture is important for the PL enhancement. This is explained in terms of moisture‐assisted light‐healing effect in FAPbI3 thin films. With this study, a new method is demonstrated to increase and control the quality of hybrid perovskite thin films.
Moisture‐induced High‐quality Perovskite Film in Air for Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:The quality of perovskite light‐harvesting layer is known to be the most critical factor for the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We herein adopt a facile ambient air‐aging process (AAP, 20‐30% RH) to realize the fabrication of high‐quality Cs0.15FA0.75MA0.1PbI3 perovskite films, thereby upgrading device performance. We find that the perovskite crystallinity after AAP for 10 d is greatly intensified, with large grain size and preferred crystal orientation along (110) and (220) planes. Comparative studies on the Ag‐based devices employing the perovskite films upon exposing to different atmospheres i.e. dry N2, dry O2, N2 & H2O (20‐30% RH), and ambient air (20‐30% RH) demonstrate that H2O molecules in air rather than O2 molecules induce an effective defect‐passivation that holds the multiple functions in enhancing the quality of perovskite film, inhibiting the nonradiative recombination, prolonging the carrier lifetime and improving the energy level matching, etc. Moreover, the positive effect of H2O in ambient atmosphere on cell performance is irreversible and remains even if moisture escapes. Finally, the average PCE of device based on the AAP‐induced film is increased from 18.24±1.49 to 21.34±0.76, with the champion PCE up to 22.60%. Also, the device with AAP exhibits better moisture resistance capability. This work offers a viable AAP‐induced route for the perovskite films with superb optoelectronic properties that can be subsequently extend to the design and construction of other photovoltaic devices for practical application. Abstract:Formamidine (FA)-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are promising candidates for photoelectric conversion devices due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, the instability of perovskites, especially moisture instability, remains one of the biggest obstacles to the commercialization of perovskite devices. Therefore, it is very important to explore and target the effect of moisture on FA-based perovskites to prevent this effect and improve device stability. Herein, we studied the degradation process of commonly used FA-based perovskite films by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy characterization and analyzed the reasons for their humidity-induced degradation. Subsequently, we further adopted a strategy by adding methylammonium bromine powder into a PbI 2 precursor solution to prepare a seed solution in a two-step preparation process to enhance the performance and stability of FA-based PSCs. Finally, the degradation rate of the obtained perovskite film was significantly slowed down under high humidity compared to that of perovskite films prepared by a two-step method without applying a seed solution. The corresponding device achieved a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 23.22%, and the efficiency of this device showed no attenuation after 900 h of exposure to air.

Abstract:The grain size of perovskite films is a key factor to optimize the performance of perovskite photovoltaic devices. Herein, a new route is developed in this paper to prepare CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) films with a better morphology and crystallization. This method includes the spin coating deposition of perovskite films with a precursor solution of PbI2 and CH3NH3I at the molar ratio 1 : 1 and thermal annealing (TA). The thermal annealing is conducted with a thermal-induced process to realize grain growth with solvent evaporation. In addition, a mixed solvent vapor treatment in acetic acid with chlorobenzene (HAc/CB) improves the morphology and crystallization of films further. As a result, the photovoltaic device based on the perovskite film treated by mixed HAc/CB solvent exhibits the best efficiency of 13.15% in comparison to the control device with 11.44% under AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm-2).

Abstract:Applications of organic–inorganic formamidinium (FA) lead triiodide (FAPbI 3 ) perovskites in high-efficiency solar cells often suffer from spontaneous α-to-δ phase transitions. However, current efforts to inhibit this phenomenon based on simple cation and anion alloying strategies continue to suffer from unintended consequences, such as unfavorable shifts in the bandgap energy and unwanted phase separation during operation. The present work compares the effects of bromine (Br) anion and dimethylamine (DMA) cation alloying on the structure and properties of FAPbI 3 perovskite in detail. DMA-incorporated FAPbI 3 perovskites show significantly improved structural stability and photovoltaic performance, while the inherent bandgap energy of the original material is maintained. Rigorous analyses demonstrate that the relatively large size and free isotropic motion of the incorporated DMA cations constrain the dynamic space of neighboring FA cations, which increases the degree to which the FA cations interact with the inorganic lattice and therefore stabilizes the PbI 6 lattice structure without significant lattice distortion. Hence, this work demonstrates an efficient method for improving the phase stability of FAPbI 3 perovskite materials while providing a plausible molecular mechanism for the stability engendered by the alloying of DMA and FA.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are known to be sensitive to the exposure to ambient humidity, which typically results in degradation and deterioration of performance, although positive effects of exposure to moisture have also been reported, due to recrystallization of the perovskite. To improve the PSCs stability, common approach is to use 3D/2D perovskite active layer, where 2D capping layer is prepared by spin‐coating the bulky organic cation halide. Here we show that optimizing the exposure of the capping layer prepared by spin‐coating phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI) to ambient atmosphere results in substantial improvement of the PSC performance. Furthermore, we show that initial effects of PEAI treatment are dependent on the NiOx/perovskite interface, but in all cases except at very high humidity (80‐85% RH) optimized exposure to ambient results in improved performance. The variations in device performance with PEAI treatment and ambient exposure can be attributed to defect passivation and changes in the charge extraction due to energy level alignment at the interfaces. The best performing devices had passivation of NiOx/perovskite interface and PEAI treatment of top surface followed by exposure to ambient atmosphere at RH of 40‐45%, which resulted in the power conversion efficiency increase from 20.3% to 22.4%.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In this work, different from the commonly explored strategy of incorporating a smaller cation, MA(+) and Cs+ into FAPbI(3) lattice to improve efficiency and stability, it is revealed that the introduction of phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI) into FAPbI(3) perovksite to form mixed cation FA(x)PEA(1-x)PbI(3) can effectively enhance both phase and ambient stability of FAPbI(3) as well as the resulting performance of the derived devices. From our experimental and theoretical calculation results, it is proposed that the larger PEA cation is capable of assembling on both the lattice surface and grain boundaries to form quais-3D perovskite structures. The surrounding of PEA(+) ions at the crystal grain boundaries not only can serve as molecular locks to tighten FAPbI(3) domains but also passivate the surface defects to improve both phase and moisture stablity. Consequently, a high-performance (PCE: 17.7%) and ambient stable FAPbI(3) solar cell could be developed.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the function of moisture on perovskite is challenging since the random environmental moisture strongly disturbs the perovskite structure. Here, we develop various N 2 -protected characterization techniques to comprehensively study the effect of moisture on the efficient cesium, methylammonium, and formamidinium triple-cation perovskite (Cs 0.05 FA 0.75 MA 0.20 )Pb(I 0.96 Br 0.04 ) 3 . In contrast to the secondary measurements, the established air-exposure-free techniques allow us directly monitor the influence of moisture during perovskite crystallization. We find a controllable moisture treatment for the intermediate perovskite can promote the mass transportation of organic salts, and help them enter the buried bottom of the films. This process accelerates the quasi-solid-solid reaction between organic salts and PbI 2 , enables a spatially homogeneous intermediate phase, and translates to high-quality perovskites with much-suppressed defects. Consequently, we obtain a champion device efficiency of approaching 24% with negligible hysteresis. The devices exhibit an average T 80 -lifetime of 852 h (maximum 1210 h) working at the maximum power point.

Abstract:Moisture, in the form of ambient humidity, has a significant impact on methylammonium lead halide perovskite films. In particular, due to the hygroscopic nature of the methylammonium component, moisture plays a significant role during film formation. This issue has so far not been well understood and neither has the impact of moisture on the physical properties of resultant films. Herein, we carry out a comprehensive and well-controlled study of the effect of moisture exposure on methylammonium lead halide perovskite film formation and properties. We find that films formed in higher humidity atmospheres have a less continuous morphology but significantly improved photoluminescence, and that film formation is faster. In photovoltaic devices, we find that exposure to moisture, either in the precursor solution or in the atmosphere during formation, results in significantly improved open-circuit voltages and hence overall device performance. We then find that by post-treating dry films with moisture exposure, we can enhance photovoltaic performance and photoluminescence in a similar way. The enhanced photoluminescence and open-circuit voltage imply that the material quality is improved in films that have been exposed to moisture. We determine that this improvement stems from a reduction in trap density in the films, which we postulate to be due to the partial solvation of the methylammonium component and "self-healing" of the perovskite lattice. This work highlights the importance of controlled moisture exposure when fabricating high-performance perovskite devices and provides guidelines for the optimum environment for fabrication. Moreover, we note that often an unintentional water exposure is likely responsible for the high performance of solar cells produced in some laboratories, whereas careful synthesis and fabrication in a dry environment will lead to lower-performing devices.

Abstract:Formamidinium (FA)-based perovskite material holds great potential to deliver highly efficient commercial solar cells. However, the FA-based perovskite films are commonly processed under a strictly controlled environment, which would eventually hinder their way to commercialization. Herein, a systematic study is conducted to investigate the sequential deposition of FA-based perovskite films that are annealed under ambient conditions. Unexpectedly, the films prepared in low humidity condition possess less pinholes and defects and exhibit better device performances than those prepared in the moisture-free condition. A series of in situ and ex situ investigations are conducted which reveal defects in perovskite films are continuously healed during the film annealing process under the humid condition. This extraordinary effect is attributed to the interaction between water molecules and perovskite. The current study should shed light on the ambient fabrication of FA-based perovskite solar cells and foster their real-world applications.

Abstract:As one of the most competitive light-harvesting materials, organometal halide perovskites have attracted great attention due to their low-cost and top-down solution fabricability. However, the instability of perovskites in a moist environment reduces the potential for their commercialization. In this study, novel 2,4-fluorobenzylamine (FBA) was employed as the passivation material, which could successfully suppress the defects and improve the moisture resistance of perovskites, resulting in an ultrahigh power conversion efficiency of 17.6% for the carbon-based perovskite solar cells with good stability. Meanwhile, the whole process of interactions between the H2O molecule and the perovskite lattice was first elucidated by density functional theory calculations, which demonstrated the underlying mechanism of the improvement of moisture stability with the FBA treatment. This work opens up a new route toward addressing the main obstacles in the practical application of perovskite devices under ambient conditions.

Realization of Moisture-Resistive Perovskite Films for Highly Efficient Solar Cells Using Molecule Incorporation

Abstract:The development of highly crystalline perovskite films with large crystal grains and few surface defects is attractive to obtain high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with good device stability. Herein, we simultaneously improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and humid stability of the CH3NH3PbI3 (CH3NH3 = MA) device by incorporating small organic molecule IT-4F into the perovskite film and using a buffer layer of PFN-Br. The presence of IT-4F in the perovskite film can successfully improve crystallinity and enhance the grain size, leading to reduced trap states and longer lifetime of the charge carrier, and make the perovskite film hydrophobic. Meanwhile, as a buffer layer, PFN-Br can accelerate the separation of excitons and promote the transfer process of electrons from the active layer to the cathode. As a consequence, the PSCs exhibit a remarkably improved PCE of 20.55% with reduced device hysteresis.
