Abstract:In this article, the core of an atmospheric-microwave-induced air plasma torch is resolved and measured by adjusting the exposure time of a high-speed camera. Gas temperature measurements of the microwave plasma core are achieved by molecular emission spectrometry of the ${A}^{2}{\Sigma }^{+}\to {X}^{2}{\Pi }_{r}$ electronic system of OH radicals. How the geometric features and gas temperature of the plasma core are related to the magnetron power and gas flow rate is explored, and the radial temperature distribution of the microwave plasma is measured. In these experiments, the magnetron power is 1033–2023 W and the gas flow rate is 10–20 L/min. The results show that microwave plasma has two parts, namely, its core and outer shell. The core radius increases approximately linearly with the magnetron power, whereas it does not change substantially with the gas flow rate. Gas temperature can be used to distinguish the core from the outer shell because the former can reach 8000 K, while the latter cools down from 5500 K. Moreover, the core temperature changes with neither the magnetron power nor the gas flow rate. Finally, a method to control the radial distribution of gas temperature of microwave plasma torch is presented.
Exploring Microwave Resonant Multi-Point Ignition Using High-Speed Schlieren Imaging

Abstract:Microwave plasma offers a potential method to achieve rapid combustion in a high-speed combustor. In this paper, microwave resonant multi-point ignition and its control method have been studied via high-speed schlieren imaging. The experiment was conducted with the microwave resonant ignition system and the schlieren optical system. The microwave pulse in 2.45 GHz with 2 ms width and 3 kW peak power was employed as an ignition energy source to produce initial flame kernels in the combustion chamber. A reflective schlieren method was designed to illustrate the flame development process with a high-speed camera. The bottom of the combustion chamber was made of a quartz glass coated with indium tin oxide, which ensures sufficient microwave reflection and light penetration. Ignition experiments were conducted at 2 bars of stoichiometric methane-air mixtures. Schlieren images show that flame kernels were generated at more than one location simultaneously and flame propagated with different speeds in different flame kernels. Ignition kernels were discussed in three types according to their appearances. Pressure curves and combustion duration also show that multi-point ignition plays a significant role in accelerating combustion.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal motion characteristics of the microwave plasma torch (MPT) source were for the first time investigated with a high-speed camera. It was found that the cone shape with a central channel of the Ar MPT, which is beneficial for the introduction of the sample analyzed, is formed by the regular and highspeed rotary motion of the discharge filament(s), and it is also the origin of the unique performance compared with other microwave plasma sources. The rotational frequency of the plasma filament is typically 100 Hz, which is affected by the flow-rates and microwave forward power level. To investigate their relationship, the parametric analysis was used, suggesting that the support gas flow-rate is the major factor, followed by microwave power and the carrier gas flow rate. It was also illustrated that the structural symmetry of the torch is important for the stability of the excitation source. In addition, the excitation process of MgCl2 aerosol in the MPT was preliminary studied on the microscopic time scale. Knowledge of this spatiotemporal behaviour is relevant to studies of the fundamental properties of the MPT and its applications.
Gas Temperature Measurements and Imaging Analysis in Atmospheric-Pressure Microwave Air Induced Plasma Torch

Abstract:As a type of plasma can be an efficient source of highly active species, atmospheric microwave plasma torch (MPT) has achieved good results in many fields.1, 2 Although the gas temperature of MPT has been studied by previous research, they don't realize that MPT may have two parts what we called “Plasma Core” and “Outer Shell” because the clear boundary of it has been captured in visible light.3 We can imagine that the phenomenon would influence the results of the previous studies. In this experiment, the core of an atmospheric microwave induced plasma torch is resolved and measured by calibration of the exposure time of a high-speed camera. The molecular emission spectrometry of the $A^{2}\Sigma^{+}\rightarrow X^{2}\Pi_{1}$, electronic system of OH radicals has been applied to measure the gas temperature of plasma core. How the geometric features and gas temperature of the plasma core are related to the magnetron power and gas flow rate is explored, and the radial temperature distribution of the microwave plasma is measured. In the experiment, we show that (i) An atmospheric microwave plasma torch has two parts, namely a core and an outer shell, which can be distinguished by visible boundary and gas temperature. In this paper, microwave multi-point ignition and spatial ignition had been confirmed via high-speed Schlieren imaging technique. The experiment was implemented with the microwave resonant ignition system and the Schlieren optical system. 2ms-3000W-2.45GHz microwave pulse was employed as the ignition energy source to produce initial flame kernel in the combustion chamber. Abstract:To study the combustion process of fuel in the microwave plasma torch, we designed a butane microwave plasma device exploiting a tungsten rod as an electrode. Through analysis of the image record by high-speed camera, we found that the discharge of butane microwave plasma torch is a cyclic process at atmospheric pressure at a frequency of around 100 Hz. During the discharge, the active particles continuously diffuse from the electrode to the outside like the bloom of the flower. Then, the variation of plasma torch of jet height and temperature with microwave power is obtained. In addition, we studied the effects of different butane flow rates on the plasma torch. The results illustrate that excessive butane will lead to carbon deposition on the electrode. All in all, this work provides a new understanding of the combustion of the microwave plasma torch, which is conducive to the further development of microwave plasma in the fields of waste gas treatment, fuel combustion, and plasma engine.

Abstract:This study proposes a coaxial structure atmospheric pressure microwave cold plasma device that utilizes argon as the main working gas. It achieves stable formation of atmospheric pressure cold plasma jet at low power (<50 W) with a jet length ranging from 1 mm to 32 mm. The paper analyzes the composition of the cold plasma using spectroscopy and investigates its composition changes at different positions along the jet. It also studies the appearance and reaction composition of the plasma filament under different shielding gases. Furthermore, it explores the effects of continuous and modulated microwave power on the length, appearance, and composition of the plasma filament. Finally, it examines the bactericidal effect of the plasma filament on Escherichia coli under various gas conditions, providing a foundation for further application research.

Abstract:In this paper, a method is introduced to get global observation of microwave plasma ignition process at high pressure. A microwave resonator was designed with an indium tin oxide coated glass at bottom. Microwave plasma ignition was implemented in methane and air mixture at 10 bars by a 2 ms-3 kW-2.45 GHz microwave pulse, and the high speed images of the ignition process were obtained. The images visually proved that microwave plasma ignition could lead to a multi-point ignition. The system may also be applied to obtain Schlieren images, which is commonly used to observe the development of flame kernel in an ignition process.

Abstract:We studied the characteristics of a microwave argon plasma torch at atmospheric pressure. The electron temperature of the plasma was measured by optical-emission spectroscopy and increases nonlinearly from 3000 to 3800 K with the increase of the microwave power from 1.0 to 4.0 kW. The spatial distribution of the electron density was measured with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to be on the order of 10(17)/cm(3) and characterized by fluctuating with the time under the same experimental conditions. Based on the plasma parameters measured, it can be concluded that the plasma is in the state of local thermodynamic equilibrium.

Abstract:We employ a suite of optical techniques, namely, visual imaging, optical emission spectroscopy and cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS), to characterize a low power, low gas flow rates, atmospheric-pressure argon microwave induced plasma. The plasma is created by a microwave plasma torch, which is excited by a 2.45 GHz microwave with powers ranging from 60 to 120 W. A series of plasma images captured in a time-resolution range of as fine as 10 µs shows that the converging point is actually a time-averaged visual effect and the converging point does not exist when the plasma is visualized under high time resolution, e.g. <2 ms. Simulations of the emission spectra of OH, N2 and in the range 200–450 nm enable the plasma electronic excitation temperature (Texc) to be determined at 8000–9000 K, while the vibrational temperature (Tv), the rotational temperature (Tr) and the gas temperature (Tg) at different locations along the axis of the plasma column are all determined to be in the range 1800–2200 K. Thermal equilibrium properties of the plasma are discussed. OH radical concentrations along the plasma column axis are measured by CRDS and the concentrations are in the range 1.6 × 1013–3.0 × 1014 cm−3 with the highest density at the tail of the plasma column. The upper limit of electron density ne is estimated to be 5.0 × 1014 cm−3 from the Lorentzian component of the broadened lineshape obtained by ringdown spectral scans of the rovibrational line S21 of the OH A–X (0–0) band.

Abstract:In order to obtain a stable plasma and improve the performance of the torch for atomic emission spectroscopy( AES), the structure of microwave plasma torch(MPT) was analyzed. The transmission and distribution characteristics of the electromagnetic field of the torch configuration with two or three concentric tubes, as well as the metal spacer between inner and intermediate tubes with different depths were simulated with electromagnetic simulation software and verified by experiments. The results indicate that the inner tube of MPT plays an important role in strengthening the electric field intensity at the opening end of the MPT and redistributing the electromagnetic field in the whole torch by forming a double resonance configuration, and contributes to enhancing the macroscopic stability and the self-sustainment of the plasma. The stability of the plasma is proved to be excellent when the metal spacer between the inner and intermediate tubes is located at a place 20—30 mm away from the top opening of the torch. A proper location of the spacer can also avoid the formation of a static filament plasma or a rotating plasma rooted from the outer wall of the inner tube. With the help of morphological analysis, the underlying reason why MPT possesses a great tolerance to wet aerosols and air introduction was clearly made, that is, the formation region of the plasma formed with MPT is apparently separated from the reaction zone of it.

High-speed imaging was used to record the ignition characteristics via high-speed camera. Ignition experiments were conducted at high pressure of 2 bars of stoichiometric methane-air mixtures. It can be observed in the image and the pressure curves that multiple flame kernels are generated simultaneously. Faster combustion speed is achieved by pulsed microwave power ignition than traditional spark plug ignition in constant volume chamber.

Abstract:Microwave-induced plasmas (MIPs) are used in various fields where the effect of high-energy electrons is needed. In the case of plasma-assisted combustion (PAC), a range of combustion properties are significantly affected by the introduced and absorbed microwave power. MIPs are well-studied in the case of mono-component gases, but less knowledge is available regarding the effect of introduced microwave power on multicomponent gases, like in the case of combustion. Previous research has primarily relied on the effect of introduced microwave power on the flammability limits and the flame speed enhancement during fuel-lean conditions, but less knowledge is available on the effect of introduced microwave power on the flue gas components. Here, we report a quantitative analysis of dry flue gas of premixed methane (CH4)-air flame coupled with 2.45-GHz microwave power using a self-designed mono-mode plasma cavity. A rapid increase in NOx concentration in the flue gas was found by the formation of plasma. The carbon dioxide concentration in the dry flue gas is found to decrease with the applied microwave power to the premixed CH4-air flame, while the oxygen concentration increases, which can be originated from the flame temperature increase. This is also supported by the rotational temperature calculations of OH radicals, which are based on the flame’s spectral emissivity measurements.

Abstract:Traditional low power-microwave plasma torch(MPT) excitation source of atomic emission spectrometry was shown to be good for the introduction of dry aerosols, but poor for wet sample aerosols. In this work, some significant modifications have been made to traditional MPT. A new MPT excitation source working at kilowatt microwave power has been developed. The kilowatt MPT source can sustain stable plasmas with double or even more filaments, presenting a “bell” form, where the region around the converging point is the optimum region for analysis. The tolerance to aqueous aerosol of the torch is enhanced significantly compared to the traditional one. Therefore, the desolvation system that the low power MPT source has to be relied on can be gotten rid of. A set of favorable detection results have been obtained with direct wet sample aerosol introduction. The kilowatt MPT source is expected to become a practical excitation source for atomic emission spectrometry that will be widely used.

Abstract:Successful implementation of plasma-assisted combustion in applied thermal processes heavily relies on how the plasma can be formed as it interacts with the reactive flow and what the effects are of such a plasma on the combustion process. The current study is an experimental investigation of a plasma-assisted lifted flat methane–air flame by a nanosecond pulsed discharge at atmospheric pressure. The nanosecond pulsed discharge, with a pulse duration of 4 ns and an amplitude of 30 kV to 50 kV, is used to stimulate the flame with a repetition rate of 1 Hz. The flame/plasma interactions are investigated with electrical and optical/laser diagnostics to study plasma-formation and its effect on the temperatures and formaldehyde formation. The flame speed seems to be accelerated for tens of milliseconds after the plasma stimulation, without noticeable gas temperature increase at the flame front and in the post-flame region. Formaldehyde is formed in the unburnt region while there is a slight increase in formaldehyde signal in the preheat zone. These results show that a volumetric effect of plasma-assisted combustion can be achieved with a short nanosecond plasma from a single excitation.

Abstract:The gas temperature is a key parameter that affects the process of microwave plasma chemistry in industrial applications. Based on the molecular emission spectrometry of the A2Σ+→X2Πr electronic system of OH radicals, the gas temperature of the atmospheric air microwave plasma core at different absorbed microwave power levels, gas flow rates, gas humidities, and volume fractions of CO2 in air was analyzed. In the experiment, the absorbed microwave power, gas flow rate, gas humidity, and volume ratio of CO2 in air was varied from 560 to 1750 W, 10 to 24 l min−1, 30% to 95%, and 0% to 40%, respectively. Moreover, the axial gas temperature distribution of the plasma torch was measured. The experimental results showed that (i) the plasma gas temperature mainly ranged from 4000 to 7000 K, (ii) the plasma gas temperature rose with increasing absorbed microwave power but was hardly affected by the feeding gas flow rate, (iii) the plasma gas temperature decreased by ∼400 K for every 20% increase in the fraction of CO2 in air and decreased with increasing gas humidity, and (iv) the plasma torch gas temperature decreased along the axial direction. Due to the lack of a prevailing microwave discharge theory, an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of gas temperature variation was performed based on the heat balance equation.
Time and space resolved diagnostics for plasma thermal-chemical instability of fuel oxidation in nanosecond plasma discharges

Abstract:Abstract An instability in a nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma occurring in methane–oxygen–argon mixtures is experimentally observed and measured by 1D time-resolved in situ electric field measurements. This instability, which seems to be created by the positive feedback between plasma kinetics and plasma-assisted low temperature fuel oxidation, is studied using electric field induced second harmonic generation and direct ICCD imaging. The rapid formation of streamers from an originally uniform discharge appears to be caused by the chemical kinetics of plasma-assisted low temperature methane oxidation, which may be resulting in a new type of plasma instability: a thermal-chemical instability. The results also revealed that the occurrence of this possible thermal-chemical instability in a reactive flow drastically changes the plasma properties by forming multiple secondary discharges and possibly leads to micron-sized non-uniform electric distributions. Single shot uncalibrated measurements of the electric field of the micron sized streamers appears to show much greater strengths than the average electric field. Furthermore, one-dimensional data analysis shows the positive feedback loop between the streamers and the low temperature plasma assisted oxidation chemistry in the plasma thermal-chemical instability. The present finding advances the understanding plasma instability growth and provides a new way to control plasma uniformity in plasma-assisted combustion and plasma fuel reforming.

Abstract:<p>The Microwave Assisted Spark Ignition system is a novel and potential ignition method to improve efficiency of spark ignition engines. To better understand the coupling mechanisms/characteristics between microwaves and spark plasma, experiments were conducted to visualize spark discharge and flame development with microwave emitted in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber. The operation parameters varied included equivalence ratio, ambient pressure, microwave pulse repetition frequency, and peak power. To clearly illuminate the coupling mechanism between microwave and spark plasma, a small-diameter antenna device was specifically designed to minimize heat loss. The microwave assisted spark ignition and flame propagation characteristics of methane-air premixed spherical flames were studied first. Subsequently, non-reactive discharge was experimented to exclude the effects from combustion. Results showed that microwave increased the development speed of an early flame kernel by 60% with 1 kHz microwave pulse repetition frequency and 1000 W peak power under the condition of equivalence ratio 0.6 and ambient pressure 0.1 MPa. The enhancement was believed to be the result of enhanced chemical reaction and the induced flame deformation by collisions between high energy electrons and other particles. As the ambient pressure increased, the enhancement effect of microwaves on flame kernels was found to diminish. In this situation, non-reactive discharge and related MAI experiments showed that a higher pulse repetition frequency or peak power was beneficial to strengthen the effect of microwave as much higher energy absorption efficiency was achieved.</p>
