Abstract:The well-being of participants at major destination events has received little empirical attention in the literature. This paper explores LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & other sexual minority) event participants' hedonic and eudaimonic well-being at the iconic Hangzhou Rainbow Marathon (HRM) in China. PERMA (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement) psychological model of human flourishing was adopted to analyze hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. Mixed qualitative methods, in the form of semi-structured in-depth interviews and a focus group, were used to address the research aim. This data was supported by informal personal observations at the marathon site. Distinctions among participants' experiences were identified, resulting in slightly different perceptions of PERMA elements for paraders, volunteers and organizers. Through this role-based perspective, an event specific PERMA model emerged. Implications for event organizers and marketing specialists are provided.

This manuscript serves as a good reminder to all health educators regarding the importance of professional association membership and attending professional conferences. The co-editors hope that established health education professionals—whether serving as faculty members teaching in professional preparation programs or those practitioners mentoring the next generation—will share this article with students and/ or colleagues regarding the benefits of attending professional conferences and joining professional organizations. Joining professional organizations like the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and attending professional conferences can provide tremendous career development, skill-building, and professional networking opportunities.

Abstract:The second IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Students Symposium on Power Electronics (SSPEL)—Asia 2024 was successfully held in Hangzhou, China, from 13 to 14 January 2024 with both in-person and virtual attendees. The event was organized through the joint efforts of the IEEE PELS Membership Committee—China (MCC), PELS Zhejiang/Jiangsu/Anhui Chapter, and PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter (SBC), with technical co-sponsorship of the China Power Supply Society (CPSS), as well as seven SBCs and the IEEE PELS Students and Young Professional (S&YP) Committee. The Symposium attracted 478 students and young professionals from seven countries, including, but not limited to, China, Singapore, and South Korea ( Figure 1 ).

Social VR for Professional Networking: A Spatial Perspective

Abstract:One essential function of professional events, such as industry trade shows and academic conferences, is to foster and extend a person's connections to others within the community of their interest. In this paper, we delve into the emerging practice transitioning these events from physical venues to social VR as a new medium. Specifically, we ask: how does the spatial design in social VR affect the attendee's networking behaviors and experiences at these events? To answer this question, we conducted in-situ observations and in-depth interviews with 13 participants. Each of them had attended or hosted at least one real-world professional event taking place in social VR. We identified four elements of VR spatial design that shaped social interactions at these events: area size, which influenced a person's perceived likelihood of encountering others; pathways connecting areas, which guided their planning of the next activity to perform; magnets in areas, which facilitated spontaneous gatherings among people; and conventionality, which affected the assessment of a person's behavior appropriateness. Some of these elements were interpreted differently depending on the role of the participant, i.e., event hosts vs. attendees. We concluded this paper with multiple design implications derived from our findings.

Abstract:Conferences provide excellent opportunities for academics, HDR students and social work practitioners to network, learn and contribute to the general body of knowledge, and establish or maintain credibility, yet there is little research about the possible opportunities conferences may provide to undergraduate students. This article introduces the notion that undergraduate social work students have much to gain from participation in academic conferences, particularly for generating a research culture among students. It follows a specific case study of undergraduate students' attendance at an international conference by analysing their learning in the development of a greater appreciation of the links between social work research, theory and practice.

Abstract:Abstract. Capacity Building in promoting geospatial technologies and their applications has its significance in ensuring good governance and resources management at local, regional and global scales. To emphasize this strongly in young generation, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) has been engaged for more than 16 years by having an exclusive Technical Commission on Education and Outreach elements. Every 4 years, this Commission has been addressing different aspects of geospatial technologies by setting up theme specific Working Groups (WGs). ISPRS Student Consortium (SC) is part of the Commission and promotes the profession to the youth. The Consortium serves as a platform of communication and information exchange among members, enabling professional networking and fostering collaborations.The Technical Commission V (TC-V) on Education and Outreach (2016–2021) has constituted eight theme WGs with different roles and activities to work upon following areas (i) multi-tier training for all levels (ii) collaborative effort at national, regional and international level (iii) dissemination through distance learning mode and web-based resource sharing & (iv) use of best practices to implement through citizen science approach, open source tools & geo web services. These WGs have made significant contributions by engaging actively workshops and new scientific initiatives in past four years. TC-V with support of International Policy Advisory Committee conducted a full-day program on International Cooperation on Earth Observation.I am happy to note that for XXIV Congress 2020, there were 33 submissions of research papers on Education and Outreach. Of these, 21 were submitted for Archives and 13 for Annals. These papers include several disciplines covering surveying, new methodologies in geoinformatics, robotic vision, citizen science in disasters bringing education to the capacity development in different disciplines. Besides these, a total of 13 papers were accepted from an initial total of 29 submissions under the Youth Forum track. All these papers were reviewed by selected experts. These papers include several disciplines covering surveying, new methodologies in geoinformatics mapping of urban landscapes, burnt area detection, morphological analysis of landslides, 3D reconstruction of buildings, classification and analysis of point clouds, applications of UAVs for aquatic vegetation and evaluation of existing image processing and interpretation techniques. The current research from the youth also demonstrate the increased use of multi-source imagery, mapping different landscapes using UAVs and the potential of 3D models.We sincerely thank all the reviewers and acknowledge strong efforts made by Area Chairs to ensure quality of all accepted papers. We greatly appreciate the perseverance and dedication of the Scientific and Organizing Committee. We are confident that the present 2020 edition of ISPRS Congress Proceedings will serve as platform for discussion on the current research efforts on the Education and Outreach themes cutting across different disciplines.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The third International Student Symposium on Animal Behaviour and Cognition (ISSABC) aimed to address barriers for early career researchers, hosting a conference both in-person and online at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The conference, attended by 101 in-person and 79 virtual participants from 24 countries, featured 81 presentations, 29 posters, five plenary talks, three workshops, and a career development round-table discussion. A user-friendly website and digital platforms facilitated communication and real-time discussions between in-person and online participants. Transparent fund management, support from sponsors and societies, and sustainable practices ensured financial accountability and minimised environmental impact. The conference emphasised sustainability measures, including eco-friendly catering and local reusable mugs. Future organisers of similar events are encouraged to prioritise local representation, plan contingencies, select plenary speakers rigorously, and employ effective marketing. With this meeting review, we highlight how hybrid conferences like the third ISSABC, through innovative approaches and sustainable practices, enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and empower the next generation of scientists.

Abstract:A major activity in the life of an academic is the professional conference. It is common knowledge that this is a place to present your research, but what about other benefits of attending a conference? Online surveys were distributed to delegates of the 3rd and 4th International Marine Conservation Congresses (IMCCs), with respondents' (n = 100) feedback including that the congresses provided useful new information that will aid: (1) their research (58%); (2) in-the-field conservation (29%); (3) conservation communication (46%); and (4) conservation and management policy making (45%). They also reported gaining new techniques (56%), skills (64%), and novel ideas (70%) to further their research/careers. Nearly all (91%) gained new contacts that improved their research, in-the-field conservation, science communication, and/or conservation policy making. Two thirds (64%) gained ideas, contacts, and/or lessons could lead to publications. Over a third (39%) gained new ideas, contacts and/or lessons that led to grant proposals, and 36% gained contacts that led to funding. A conference is not just an avenue for a scientist to present their research to the wider community, but it can be an important venue for brainstorming, networking and making vital connections that can lead to new initiatives, papers and funding, in a way that virtual, online meetings cannot. This is why conferences matter.

Abstract:The event industry has rapidly adopted social media as a key marketing tool, leveraging platforms with millions of users. Social media has become a crucial tool in event marketing and holds the power to greatly influence the decision-making processes of event attendees. The study's objectives include examining the relationships between attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and attendees' satisfaction concerning the use of social media. Data was collected through a descriptive survey methodology, with respondents consisting of undergraduate students in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Selangor, Puncak Alam Campus. The study findings revealed significant relationships between these variables and attendee satisfaction, underlining the importance of social media in enhancing event experiences. The majority of respondents learned about events through Instagram, emphasizing the platform's prominence in event promotion. This research suggests that event organizers should leverage social media to improve attendee satisfaction and engage with their audience effectively. Future research can explore the impact of emerging platforms like TikTok and extend the study to different age groups to provide broader insights into social media's role in event satisfaction.

Abstract:The IEEE Computational Society (CIS) offers many financially-sponsored conferences each year. All of these depend on the hard work and effort of volunteers who propose and then organize these events in the pursuit of a healthy exchange of information and improvement in the application and theory of computational intelligence approaches. The last few years in particular have been a challenging time for conferences as the pandemic required rapid conversion to virtual programming. Only now are we finally seeing a return to largely in-person events with some hybrid components. The IEEE CIS Conferences Committee and Administrative Committee recently approved a motion to list the general chairs, program chairs, and financial chairs for IEEE CIS financially-sponsored conferences in IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine on an annual basis as a way of recognizing these volunteers for their service. Abstract:This article examines a unique aspect of the business travel industry whereby organizations worldwide are conducting corporate meetings within a socially responsible context. The aim of this study is to identify drivers of employee citizenship behaviors for staff participating in a novel program called MICE for COMMUNITY in Thailand. A mixed method approach included interviews and a self-report questionnaire of 245 employees visiting a rural community. Interview findings found that community understanding, self-esteem, and community fit were critical aspects of a positive staff experience. The strongest predictors of positive word of mouth and positive attitude toward revisiting the host community were community understanding and perceived community value. Novel predictors tested extend our understanding of employee citizenship. Key recommendations are made for government agencies involved in facilitating corporate meetings with a social responsibility orientation, nongovernment organizations, and corporate policy-makers involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.
