Abstract:Social networking services have become very popular in recent years, especially among younger people. While many people still sit behind a desktop computer to upload photos, write blogs and communicate with friends in the virtual world, an increasing trend enabled by the development of wireless networks and location sensing technologies is to track and share personal location information on the fly with mobile devices. By adding a location dimension, social networking has now been brought from the virtual world back to real life and our real-life experiences can be shared in the virtual world in a convenient fashion. We define Location Based Social Networks (LBSN) as social networking services where people can track and share location-related information with each other, via either mobile or desktop computers. As location is one of the most important aspects in people's everyday lives, a lot of novel application scenarios can be supported by LBSN, e.g., trustworthy location recommendations can be collected and shared within LBSN and used to rank interesting locations, discover new places, people and activities.

Abstract:Social networks have been prevalent on the Internet, attracting many professionals from a variety of fields. By adding a location dimension, we can bring online social networks back to the physical world and share our real-life experiences in the virtual world conveniently. In Location Based Social Networks (LBSN), people cannot only track and share location-related information with each other via either mobile devices or desktop computers, but also leverage collaborative social knowledge learned from user-generated and location-related contents. As location is one of the most important properties in people's daily lives, LBSN will bridge the gap between online societies and the physical world and enable a lot of novel applications changing the way we live, such as travel planning, location/friend recommendations, community discovery, human mobility modeling and user activity analysis. The technology derived from LBSN, e.g., location trajectory mining and retrieval, can also be applied to a multitude of other research areas including biology, sociology, geography, and climatology, etc. The objective of this workshop is to provide professionals, researchers, and technologists with a single forum where they can discuss and share the state-of-the-art of LBSN development and applications, present their ideas and contributions, and set future directions in emerging innovative research for location based social networks.

Abstract:The development of mobile devices and positioning technology has facilitated the rapid growth of location-based social networks (LBSNs). Users in these networks can share geo-related information in real-time, including locations, trajectories, geo-tagged pictures, and tweets. LBSNs record massive amounts of spatiotemporal data and offer a great opportunity to analyze human and location-specific spatiotemporal characteristics. It plays an important role in various applications, such as marketing, recommendations, and urban planning. In this study, we collect relevant literature about LBSNs research in the past 10 years and use a topic model, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), to uncover the highly heterogeneous area of research related to LBSNs. Then, we conduct a systematic review of those works. In doing so, we organize identified literature into eight fine-grained directions. For each direction, we sum up the major research focus and contributions. We also systematize future research into four main themes concerning data simulation and fusion, privacy-aware methods, new applications and services, and technological innovations.

Abstract:The burgeoning domain of social media has infiltrated general populations and has achieved broad applicability [10]. This domain has been studied extensively but there is a deficiency of research in the area of social media and mobile access and use [1] [11]. This study examines not only the use of social media on mobile devices but extends the ideas of this area of research to evaluate how social media is being used on mobile devices. It reports the findings of an online survey of 73 participants recruited from different listservs in the world. The study shows that the majority of participants use social networks as consumers (e.g. read other people posts), more than producers (i.e. post status update or a photo). It also reveals some differences between the topics participants share through a mobile device and a personal computer.

Abstract:Nowadays, people tend to photograph with mobile phones more and more, in which way photo sharing in online SNS are much more convenient. But there remain challenges such as automatic sharing, album management and social sensing. This paper presents a participatory sensing based social photo sharing system-SoPhoNet. With the involved model "People, Photos and Photo Events", the participators of the social activities with photos (photo events) are sensed based on the combination of co-presence in photographing and the relations from the online SNS. Algorithms are proposed to build the relation of photo events. Applications based on SoPhoNet system are implemented to improve automatic photo sharing, event-based photo management and exploration of the social relations and relations of social activities beyond photos.

Abstract:Due to the proliferation of GPS-enabled smartphones, Location-Based Social Networking (LBSNs) services have been experiencing a remarkable growth over the last few years. Compared with traditional online social networks, a significant feature of LBSNs is the coexistence of both online and offline social interactions, providing a large-scale heterogeneous social network that is able to facilitate lots of academic studies. One possible study is to leverage both online and offline social ties for the recognition and profiling of community structures. In this chapter, the authors attempt to summarize some recent progress in the community detection problem based on LBSNs. In particular, starting with an empirical analysis on the characters of the LBSN data set, the authors present three different community detection approaches, namely, link-based community detection, content-based community detection, and hybrid community detection based on both links and contents. Meanwhile, they also address the community profiling problem, which is very useful in real-world applications.

Abstract:This study systematically traces the development of SNS (social network service) in China, and divides it into 4 stages: traditional networked socializing, the budding stage of SNS, the rapid growth of real-name socializing, and the thriving stage of socialized media. At the same time, the author analyses the characteristics of Chinese SNS in different stages. The study illustrates the role SNS has played in filling a gap of the traditional media, promoting social governance and economic development, by means of case studies of the high-speed train crash in Wenzhou, the protest of Wukan villagers in Guangdong, and the selling of green onions on Weibo (the Chinese version of Twitter). The study also theoretically explores how the SNS emerged and its relationship with social interaction and demonstrates that the difference between SNS and the traditional Internet is the identification of identity constructed by people-centered and social relationships. The changes in the way people use the Internet have an impact on the interaction structure of SNS and also on the evolution of social relationships on and off line, generating both positive and negative forces in the SNS development process. The SNS we expect is a rational and orderly social interaction structure which can promote continuous social progress.

Abstract:The emergence of social software tools in recent years, such as blogs and Wikis, has provided new opportunities in supporting an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) digital literacy pedagogy. This study explored the student evaluation of blogging for Doing English Digital, a project-based course at Peking University that aims to develop students’ English digital literacy skills. Findings from the focus group interview suggest that from the student perspective, blogging has the potential to help construct individual identities with a variety of semiotic resources and to provide the social, affective, and metacognitive support essential to the development of digital literacy skills. However, the value of blogging for knowledge co-construction is limited. To maximize the value of blogging for the development of EFL digital literacy skills in the Web 2.0 era, EFL instructors need to integrate blogs with other social networking technologies and design meaningful activities that not only encourage peer interaction within the class community, but also support learners in developing social networking skills to connect to a valuable public beyond the class.

Abstract:In the era of big data, the massive public opinion data on social media has challenged the traditional top-down framework analysis methods. In 2022, Fudan University published the core teaching material of network and new media communication, Computational Public Opinion in the Era of Big Data: Theories, Methods and Cases. In addition to analyzing the challenges faced by the traditional framework theory, the authors Zhou Baohua and Liang Hai also introduce how to use network analysis methods to cope with the transformation of social relations increased by technological progress. The data of CNNIC's 52nd report revealed that China has driven the whole people to go online, and social media is an important carrier for empty-nest youth to fight against weak localization. Therefore, how empty-nest youth use social media to become citizens, localization and family has become a landscape worthy of attention. By using the data of "Investigation on the use of social media by empty Nest Youth" from 2021 to 2023, this paper focuses on the degree of weak localization resistance of social networks and finds that the short video content produced is not only determined by technology or social factors, but a new communication scene jointly constructed by technology and society. In view of the "aphasia" characteristic of the vulnerable groups using social media in the previous research on rural communication, this paper puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions from three perspectives: ideological and political education, intergenerational support and digital inclusion.
