Abstract:In this work, Gibbs paradox was discussed from the view of observer. The limitations of real observer are analyzed quantitatively. The entropy of mixing was found to be determined by both the identification ability and the information already in hand of an observer.

Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Abstract:The classical Gibbs paradox concerns the entropy change upon mixing two gases. Whether an observer assigns an entropy increase to the process depends on their ability to distinguish the gases. A resolution is that an "ignorant" observer, who cannot distinguish the gases, has no way of extracting work by mixing them. Moving the thought experiment into the quantum realm, we reveal new and surprising behaviour: the ignorant observer can extract work from mixing different gases, even if the gases cannot be directly distinguished. Moreover, in the macroscopic limit, the quantum case diverges from the classical ideal gas: as much work can be extracted as if the gases were fully distinguishable. We show that the ignorant observer assigns more microstates to the system than found by naive counting in semiclassical statistical mechanics. This demonstrates the importance of accounting for the level of knowledge of an observer, and its implications for genuinely quantum modifications to thermodynamics.

Abstract:Information (I) is defined as the amount of the data after data compression. The first law of information theory: the total amount of data L (the sum of entropy S and information I) of an isolated system remains unchanged. The second law of information theory: Information I of an isolated system decreases to a minimum at equilibrium. The third law of information theory: For a solid structure of perfect symmetry (e.g., a perfect crystal), the information I is zero and the (information theory) entropy (called by me as static entropy for solid state) S is at the maximum. Gibbs Paradox has been resolved. Spontaneously mixed substances at gaseous state can be spontaneously separated at condensed phases (solid or liquid states), driving only by information loss or by the increase in (information theory) entropy. None of the typical pure mixing or separation processes are driving by free energy minimization and the free energy (or total amount of chemical potential) has no change during the processes of ideal mixture formation or ideal mixture separation. The thermodynamic entropy change for the formation of ideal mixtures of gases, liquids or solids is always zero.

Abstract:By following the spirit of arXiv:1003.5665, we define a new Tolman temperature of Kodama observer directly related to its acceleration. We give a generalized integral form of thermodynamics relation on virtual sphere of constant $r$ in non-static spherical symmetric spacetimes. This relation contains work term contributed by `redshift work density', `pressure density' and `gravitational work density'. We illustrate it in RN black hole, Dilaton-Maxwell-Einstein black hole and Vaidya black hole. We argue that the co-moving observers are not physically related to Kodama observers in FRW universe unless in the vacuum case. We also find that a generalized differential form of first law is difficult to be well defined, and it would not give more information than the integral form.

Abstract:The Gibbs paradox of the first kind (GP1) refers to the false increase in entropy which, in statistical mechanics, is calculated from the process of combining two gas systems S1 and S2 consisting of distinguishable particles. Presented in a somewhat modified form, the GP1 manifests as a contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics. Contrary to popular belief, this contradiction affects not only classical but also quantum statistical mechanics. This paper resolves the GP1 by considering two effects. (i) The uncertainty about which particles are located in S1 and which in S2 contributes to the entropies of S1 and S2. (ii) S1 and S2 are correlated by the fact that if a certain particle is located in one system, it cannot be located in the other. As a consequence, the entropy of the total system consisting of S1 and S2 is not the sum of the entropies of S1 and S2.

Abstract:The limit of small entropy production is reached in relaxing systems long after preparation, and in stationary driven systems in the limit of small driving power. Surprisingly, for extended systems this limit is not in general the Gibbs-Boltzmann distribution, or a small departure from it. Interesting cases in which it is not are glasses, phase-separation, and certain driven complex fluids. We describe a scenario with several coexisting temperatures acting on different timescales, and partial equilibrations at each time scale. This scenario entails strong modifications of the fluctuation-dissipation equalities and the existence of some unexpected reciprocity relations. Both predictions are open to experimental verification, particularly the latter. The construction is consistent in general, since it can be viewed as the breaking of a symmetry down to a residual group. It does not assume the presence of quenched disorder. It can be -- and to a certain extent has been -- tested numerically, while some experiments are on their way. There is furthermore the perspective that analytic arguments may be constructed to prove or disprove its generality.

Abstract:Stochastic thermodynamics allows us to define heat and work for microscopic systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium, based on observations of their stochastic dynamics. However, a complete account of the energetics necessitates that all relevant nonequilibrium degrees of freedom are resolved, which is not feasible in many experimental situations. A simple approach is to map the visible dynamics onto a Markov model, which produces a lower-bound estimate of the entropy production. The bound, however, can be quite loose, especially when the visible dynamics only have small or vanishing observable currents. An alternative approach is presented that uses all observable data to find an underlying hidden Markov model responsible for generating the observed non-Markovian dynamics. For masked Markovian kinetic networks, one obtains the tightest possible lower bound on entropy production of the full dynamics that is compatible with the observable data. The formalism is illustrated with a simple example system.

Abstract:The article reveals the error that in classical thermodynamics leads to the Gibbs paradox. The essence of the error lies in the fact that the entropy of an ideal gas is attributed to additive quantities, but it is not correct. The value of an additive quantity for a whole object is equal to the sum of its values for the parts of the object in any division of the object into parts. The entropy of an ideal gas in classical thermodynamics is expressed by the equation that contains the term Rnln(V/n), where n is the number of moles of gas, V is the volume of gas, R is the universal gas constant, or by equations equivalent to it. As a result, the entropy of an ideal gas is equal to the sum of the entropies of its parts only if the parts of the gas are in different places (separated by an impermeable partition). If the parts of the gas form a mixture, then the sum of the entropies of the parts is not equal to the entropy of the gas. Despite this, the entropy of an ideal gas is considered to be an additive quantity. This gives rise to a series of inexplicable conclusions known as various formulations of the Gibbs paradox.

Abstract:This letter presents a new, solely thermodynamical argument for considering the states of the quantum isolated horizon of a black hole as distinguishable. We claim that only if the states are distinguishable, the thermodynamic entropy is an extensive quantity and can be well-defined. To show this, we make a comparison with a classical ideal gas system whose statistical description makes only sense if an additional 1/N!-factor is included in the state counting in order to cure the Gibbs paradox. The case of the statistical description of a quantum isolated horizon is elaborated, to make the claim evident.
Entropy Production Analysis of Burnett Equations Using Classical Thermodynamics with Gibbs Equations

Abstract:An expression describing the entropy production in the Burnett equations is constructed from the classical thermodynamic theory using the continuum conservation relations for mass, momentum and energy in conjunction with Gibbs equation in both oneand three-dimensions. The entropy production is transformed into a polynomial in Mach number and Knudsen number which is employed to analyze the thermodynamic properties of both expanding and compressed gases. Each term in the entropy production polynomial in three-dimensions is studied separately due to the complexity of the polynomial expression in three-dimensions. The results indicate that the irreversible entropy production in conventional Burnett equations, augmented Burnett equations and simplified conventional Burnett equations is not positive semi-definite for an expanding but is positive semi-definite for a gas under compression. Thus these equations may violate the second law of thermodynamics in a flow undergoing both compression and expansion. This result may explain the numerical instability encountered in the numerical solution of the Burnett equations.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics stipulates that entropy production is non-negative in macroscopic systems, reaching zero at thermodynamic equilibrium. As a corollary, this implies that the state trajectory of macroscopic systems is inherently time-irreversible under out-of-equilibrium conditions. However, over the past half-century, various studies have demonstrated that this principle does not hold for the composition sample path of some isothermal reactive systems. Theoretical frameworks leading to this unexpected observation primarily focus on zero-dimensional (perfectly homogeneous) systems, which exclude the effect of local fluctuations. This oversimplification might account for the paradoxical theoretical prediction. In the absence of pertinent experimental data, this paper aims to investigate this phenomenon through microscopic simulations.

Abstract:Small systems consisting of a few particles are increasingly technologically relevant. In such systems, an intense debate in microcanonical statistical mechanics has been about the correctness of Boltzmann's surface entropy versus Gibbs' volume entropy. Both entropies have shortcomings -- while Boltzmann entropy predicts unphysical negative/infinite absolute temperatures for small systems with unbounded energy, Gibbs entropy entirely disallows negative absolute temperatures, in disagreement with experiments. We consider a relative energy window, motivated by the Heisenberg energy-time uncertainty principle and eigenstate thermalization in quantum mechanics. The proposed entropy ensures positive, finite temperatures for systems without a maximum limit on their energy and allows negative absolute temperatures in bounded energy systems, e.g., with population inversion. It also closely matches canonical ensemble predictions for prototypical systems, thus correctly describing the zero-point energy of an isolated quantum harmonic oscillator. Overall, we enable accurate thermodynamic models for isolated systems with few degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Information based thermodynamic logic is revisited. It consists of two parts: Part A applies the modern theory of probability in which an arbitrary convex function \phi is employed as an analytic "device" to express information as statistical dependency contained in the topological sub-\sigma-algebra structure. Via thermo-doubling, Fenchel-Young equality (FYE) that consists of \phi(x) and its conjugate \psi(y) establishes the notion of equilibrium between x and y through duality symmetry and the principle of maximum entropy/minimum free energy. Part B deals with a given set of repetitive measurements, where an inherent convex function emerges via the mathematics of large deviations. Logarithm-based Shannon entropy with \phi(x)=-\log x figures prominently for i.i.d. sample statistics. Information can be a measure of the agreement between a statistical observation and its theoretical models. Maximum likelihood principle arises here and FYE provides a thermodynamic energetic narrative of recurrent data.

Abstract:In quantum gravity, it has been argued that a proper accounting of the role played by an observer promotes the von Neumann algebra of observables in a given spacetime subregion from Type III to Type II. While this allows for a mathematically precise definition of its entropy, we show that this procedure depends on which observer is employed. We make this precise by considering a setup in which many possible observers are present; by generalising previous approaches, we derive density operators for the subregion relative to different observers (and relative to arbitrary collections of observers), and we compute the associated entropies in a semiclassical regime, as well as in some specific examples that go beyond this regime. We find that the entropies seen by distinct observers can drastically differ. Our work makes extensive use of the formalism of quantum reference frames (QRF); indeed, as we point out, the 'observers' considered here and in the previous works are nothing but QRFs. In the process, we demonstrate that the description of physical states and observables invoked by Chandrasekaran et al. [

Abstract:Thermodynamics as limiting behaviors of statistics is generalized to arbitrary systems with probability a priori where the thermodynamic infinite-size limit is replaced by a multiple-measurement limit. A duality symmetry between Massieu's and Gibbs's entropy arises in the limit of infinitely repeated observations, yielding the Gibbs equation and Hill-Gibbs-Duhem equation (HGDE) as a dual pair. If a system has a thermodynamic limit satisfying Callen's postulate, entropy being an Eulerian function, the symmetry is lost: the HGDE reduces to the Gibbs-Duhem equation. This theory provides a de-mechanized foundation for classical and nanothermodynamics and offers a framework for distilling emergence from large data, free from underlying details.

Abstract:People are well aware that, inherently, certain small-scale nonchaotic particle movements are not governed by thermodynamics. Usually, such phenomena are studied by kinetic theory and their energy properties are considered "trivial". In current research, we show that, beyond the boundary of the second law of thermodynamics where Boltzmann's H-theorem does not apply, there are also large-sized systems of nontrivial energy properties: when the system is isolated, entropy can decrease; from a single thermal reservoir, the system can absorb heat and produce useful work without any other effect. The key concept is local nonchaoticity, demonstrated by using a narrow energy barrier. The barrier width is much less than the nominal particle mean free path, so that inside the barrier, the particle-particle collisions are sparse and the particle trajectories tend to be locally nonchaotic. Across the barrier, the steady-state particle flux ratio is intrinsically in a non-Boltzmann form. With a step-ramp structure, the nonequilibrium effect spreads to the entire system, and a global flow is generated spontaneously from the random thermal motion. The deviation from thermodynamic equilibrium is steady and significant, and compatible with the basic principle of maximum entropy. These theoretical and numerical analyses may shed light on the fundamentals of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.

Abstract:We prove that information-theoretic maximum entropy (MaxEnt) approach to canonical ensemble is mathematically equivalent to the classic approach of Boltzmann, Gibbs and Darwin-Fowler. The two approaches, however, "interpret" a same mathematical theorem differently; most notably observing mean-energy in the former and energy conservation in the latter. However, applying the same MaxEnt method to grand canonical ensemble fails; while carefully following the classic approach based on Boltzmann's microcanonical {\em equal probability a priori} produces the correct statistics: One does not need to invoke quantum mechanics; and there is no Gibbs paradox. MaxEnt and related minimum relative entropy principle are based on the mathematical theorem concerning large deviations of rare fluctuations. As a scientific method, it requires classic mechanics, or some other assumptions, to provide meaningful {\em prior distributions} for the expected-value based statistical inference. A naive assumption of uniform prior is not valid in statistical mechanics.

Abstract:It has long been known that, fundamentally different from a large body of rarefied gas, when a Knudsen gas is immersed in a thermal bath, it may never reach thermal equilibrium. The root cause is nonchaoticity: as the particle-particle collisions are sparse, the particle trajectories tend to be independent of each other. Usually, this counterintuitive phenomenon is studied through kinetic theory and is not considered a thermodynamic problem. In current research, we show that if incorporated in a compound setup, such an intrinsically nonequilibrium behavior has nontrivial consequences and cannot circumvent thermodynamics: cold-to-hot heat transfer may happen spontaneously, either continuously (with an energy barrier) or cyclically (with time-dependent entropy barriers). It allows for production of useful work by absorbing heat from a single thermal reservoir without any other effect. As the system obeys the first law of thermodynamics, the refrigeration statement and the heat-engine statement of the second law of thermodynamics cannot be applied. The basic principle of maximum entropy is adhered to.
