Abstract:The Gibbs paradox of the first kind (GP1) refers to the false increase in entropy which, in statistical mechanics, is calculated from the process of combining two gas systems S1 and S2 consisting of distinguishable particles. Presented in a somewhat modified form, the GP1 manifests as a contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics. Contrary to popular belief, this contradiction affects not only classical but also quantum statistical mechanics. This paper resolves the GP1 by considering two effects. (i) The uncertainty about which particles are located in S1 and which in S2 contributes to the entropies of S1 and S2. (ii) S1 and S2 are correlated by the fact that if a certain particle is located in one system, it cannot be located in the other. As a consequence, the entropy of the total system consisting of S1 and S2 is not the sum of the entropies of S1 and S2.

Abstract:We prove that information-theoretic maximum entropy (MaxEnt) approach to canonical ensemble is mathematically equivalent to the classic approach of Boltzmann, Gibbs and Darwin-Fowler. The two approaches, however, "interpret" a same mathematical theorem differently; most notably observing mean-energy in the former and energy conservation in the latter. However, applying the same MaxEnt method to grand canonical ensemble fails; while carefully following the classic approach based on Boltzmann's microcanonical {\em equal probability a priori} produces the correct statistics: One does not need to invoke quantum mechanics; and there is no Gibbs paradox. MaxEnt and related minimum relative entropy principle are based on the mathematical theorem concerning large deviations of rare fluctuations. As a scientific method, it requires classic mechanics, or some other assumptions, to provide meaningful {\em prior distributions} for the expected-value based statistical inference. A naive assumption of uniform prior is not valid in statistical mechanics.
Resolving Bertrand's Probability Paradox

Abstract:In this article we resolve Bertrand’s probability paradox and show why it has perplexed researchers for 120 years. This paradox appears to have three equally plausible, yet incompatible, solutions. We begin by showing two facts, the random chords referred to in Bertrand’s paradox are homogeneously distributed and there is no disagreement among people on this point. Based on these facts, we rigorously prove that two of the three alleged answers are not sound because of their false assumptions and that only one solution is correct. The paradox is therefore no longer paradoxical. We also reveal two significant stumbling blocks that have persistently caused puzzles with regard to this paradox: 1) misunderstanding of the nature of homogeneously distributed chords, and 2) a disparity between the problem as originally conceived in the mind and its subsequent representation. We conclude by presenting our reflections on the subtleties of the paradox and on some prevalent misconceptions that have historically plagued attempts to resolve it.

Abstract:The article reveals the error that in classical thermodynamics leads to the Gibbs paradox. The essence of the error lies in the fact that the entropy of an ideal gas is attributed to additive quantities, but it is not correct. The value of an additive quantity for a whole object is equal to the sum of its values for the parts of the object in any division of the object into parts. The entropy of an ideal gas in classical thermodynamics is expressed by the equation that contains the term Rnln(V/n), where n is the number of moles of gas, V is the volume of gas, R is the universal gas constant, or by equations equivalent to it. As a result, the entropy of an ideal gas is equal to the sum of the entropies of its parts only if the parts of the gas are in different places (separated by an impermeable partition). If the parts of the gas form a mixture, then the sum of the entropies of the parts is not equal to the entropy of the gas. Despite this, the entropy of an ideal gas is considered to be an additive quantity. This gives rise to a series of inexplicable conclusions known as various formulations of the Gibbs paradox.

Abstract:Information (I) is defined as the amount of the data after data compression. The first law of information theory: the total amount of data L (the sum of entropy S and information I) of an isolated system remains unchanged. The second law of information theory: Information I of an isolated system decreases to a minimum at equilibrium. The third law of information theory: For a solid structure of perfect symmetry (e.g., a perfect crystal), the information I is zero and the (information theory) entropy (called by me as static entropy for solid state) S is at the maximum. Gibbs Paradox has been resolved. Spontaneously mixed substances at gaseous state can be spontaneously separated at condensed phases (solid or liquid states), driving only by information loss or by the increase in (information theory) entropy. None of the typical pure mixing or separation processes are driving by free energy minimization and the free energy (or total amount of chemical potential) has no change during the processes of ideal mixture formation or ideal mixture separation. The thermodynamic entropy change for the formation of ideal mixtures of gases, liquids or solids is always zero.

Abstract:The classical Gibbs paradox concerns the entropy change upon mixing two gases. Whether an observer assigns an entropy increase to the process depends on their ability to distinguish the gases. A resolution is that an "ignorant" observer, who cannot distinguish the gases, has no way of extracting work by mixing them. Moving the thought experiment into the quantum realm, we reveal new and surprising behaviour: the ignorant observer can extract work from mixing different gases, even if the gases cannot be directly distinguished. Moreover, in the macroscopic limit, the quantum case diverges from the classical ideal gas: as much work can be extracted as if the gases were fully distinguishable. We show that the ignorant observer assigns more microstates to the system than found by naive counting in semiclassical statistical mechanics. This demonstrates the importance of accounting for the level of knowledge of an observer, and its implications for genuinely quantum modifications to thermodynamics.

Resolving the Debate Between Boltzmann and Gibbs Entropy: Relative Energy Window Eliminates Thermodynamic Inconsistencies and Allows Negative Absolute Temperatures

Abstract:Small systems consisting of a few particles are increasingly technologically relevant. In such systems, an intense debate in microcanonical statistical mechanics has been about the correctness of Boltzmann's surface entropy versus Gibbs' volume entropy. Both entropies have shortcomings -- while Boltzmann entropy predicts unphysical negative/infinite absolute temperatures for small systems with unbounded energy, Gibbs entropy entirely disallows negative absolute temperatures, in disagreement with experiments. We consider a relative energy window, motivated by the Heisenberg energy-time uncertainty principle and eigenstate thermalization in quantum mechanics. The proposed entropy ensures positive, finite temperatures for systems without a maximum limit on their energy and allows negative absolute temperatures in bounded energy systems, e.g., with population inversion. It also closely matches canonical ensemble predictions for prototypical systems, thus correctly describing the zero-point energy of an isolated quantum harmonic oscillator. Overall, we enable accurate thermodynamic models for isolated systems with few degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We analyze a contrasting dynamical behavior of Gibbs-Shannon and conditional Kullback-Leibler entropies, induced by time-evolution of continuous probability distributions. The question of predominantly purpose-dependent entropy definition for non-equilibrium model systems is addressed. The conditional Kullback-Leibler entropy is often believed to properly capture physical features of an asymptotic approach towards equilibrium. We give arguments in favor of the usefulness of the standard Gibbs-type entropy and indicate that its dynamics gives an insight into physically relevant, but generally ignored in the literature, non-equilibrium phenomena. The role of physical units in the Gibbs-Shannon entropy definition is iscussed.

Abstract:Generalized entropy, that has been recently proposed, puts all the known and apparently different entropies like The Tsallis, the Rényi, the Barrow, the Kaniadakis, the Sharma-Mittal and the loop quantum gravity entropy within a single umbrella. However, the microscopic origin of such generalized entropy as well as its relation to thermodynamic system(s) is not clear. In the present work, we will provide a microscopic thermodynamic explanation of generalized entropy(ies) from canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. It turns out that in both the canonical and grand-canonical descriptions, the generalized entropies can be interpreted as the statistical ensemble average of a series of microscopic quantity(ies) given by various powers of $\left(-k\ln{\rho}\right)^n$ (with $n$ being a positive integer and $\rho$ symbolizes the phase space density of the respective ensemble), along with a term representing the fluctuation of Hamiltonian and number of particles of the system under consideration (in case of canonical ensemble, the fluctuation on the particle number vanishes).

Abstract:J. Willard Gibbs' Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics was the definitive work of one of America's greatest physicists. Gibbs' book on statistical mechanics establishes the basic principles and fundamental results that have flowered into the modern field of statistical mechanics. However, at a number of points, Gibbs' teachings on statistical mechanics diverge from positions on the canonical ensemble found in more recent works, at points where seemingly there should be agreement. The objective of this paper is to note some of these points, so that Gibbs' actual positions are not misrepresented to future generations of students.

Abstract:This letter presents a new, solely thermodynamical argument for considering the states of the quantum isolated horizon of a black hole as distinguishable. We claim that only if the states are distinguishable, the thermodynamic entropy is an extensive quantity and can be well-defined. To show this, we make a comparison with a classical ideal gas system whose statistical description makes only sense if an additional 1/N!-factor is included in the state counting in order to cure the Gibbs paradox. The case of the statistical description of a quantum isolated horizon is elaborated, to make the claim evident.

Abstract:Thermodynamics as limiting behaviors of statistics is generalized to arbitrary systems with probability a priori where the thermodynamic infinite-size limit is replaced by a multiple-measurement limit. A duality symmetry between Massieu's and Gibbs's entropy arises in the limit of infinitely repeated observations, yielding the Gibbs equation and Hill-Gibbs-Duhem equation (HGDE) as a dual pair. If a system has a thermodynamic limit satisfying Callen's postulate, entropy being an Eulerian function, the symmetry is lost: the HGDE reduces to the Gibbs-Duhem equation. This theory provides a de-mechanized foundation for classical and nanothermodynamics and offers a framework for distilling emergence from large data, free from underlying details.

Abstract:We use the theory of probability to show that, as the fraction $X_n/Y\to 0$, the conditional probability for $X_n$, given $X_n+Y \in h_{\delta}:=[h, h+\delta]$, has a limit law $f_{X_n}(x)e^{-\psi_n(h_\delta)x}$, where $\psi_n(h_\delta) $ equals to $[\partial \ln P(Y \in y_\delta)/\partial y]_{y=h}$ plus an additional term, contributed from the strong correlation between $X_n$ and bath $Y$. Since $\delta$ is infinitesimal, the theory shows a logic equivalence between the conditional probability setup and traditional energy conservation in dynamics. We obtain the state space density for a system strongly coupled to a heat bath. A discrete version of the theorem yields the grand canonical distribution without the Gibbs paradox. In terms of certain invariant criteria with respect to $h_\delta$, the concept of a thermodynamic reservoir is given.

Abstract:In order to undestand how the complex concept of entropy emerged,we propose a trip towards the past reviewing the works of Clausius, Boltzmann, Gibbs and Planck. In particular, since the Gibbs's work is not very well known, we present a detailed analysis, recalling the three definitions of the entropy that Gibbs gives. May be one of the most important aspect of the entropy is to see it as a thermodynamic potential like the other thermodynamic potentials as proposed by Callen. We close with some remarks on entropy and irreversibility.

Abstract:In this paper we build on the work of \cite{kaber} where it was shown that the one-parameter family of Gegenbauer Polynomials (GP) exhibit a Gibbs Phenomenon at a jump discontinuity. We show that the one-parameter family of Generalized Laguerre Polynomials (GLP) also exhibit a Gibbs Phenomenon. Among many differences, a major one is that the GLP are orthogonal on a non-compact subset of $\R$, while the GP are orthogonal on $[-1,1]$. Our strategy follows that of \cite{kaber} and we use entirely elementary methods to arrive at our result. As a special case we show that the Hermite Polynomials also possess a Gibbs Phenomenon. We conclude with a numerical example exhibiting the rate of convergence to the Gibbs constant and a conjectured identity for special values of the GLP.

Abstract:The paradox of Bose-Einstein condensation is that phenomena such as the $\lambda$-transition heat capacity and superfluid flow are macroscopic, whereas the occupancy of the ground state is microscopic. This contradiction is resolved with a simple derivation for ideal bosons that shows Bose-Einstein condensation is into multiple low-lying states, not just the ground state.

Abstract:When at equilibrium, large-scale systems obey conventional thermodynamics because they belong to microscopic configurations (or states) that are typical. Crucially, the typical states usually represent only a small fraction of the total number of possible states, and yet the characterization of the set of typical states -- the typical set -- alone is sufficient to describe the macroscopic behavior of a given system. Consequently, the concept of typicality, and the associated Asymptotic Equipartition Property allow for a drastic reduction of the degrees of freedom needed for system's statistical description. The mathematical rationale for such a simplification in the description is due to the phenomenon of concentration of measure. The later emerges for equilibrium configurations thanks to very strict constraints on the underlying dynamics, such as weekly interacting and (almost) independent system constituents. The question naturally arises as to whether the concentration of measure and related typicality considerations can be extended and applied to more general complex systems, and if so, what mathematical structure can be expected in the ensuing generalized thermodynamics. In this paper we illustrate the relevance of the concept of typicality in the toy model context of the "thermalized" coin and show how this leads naturally to Shannon entropy. We also show an intriguing connection: The characterization of typical sets in terms of Renyi and Tsallis entropies naturally leads to the free energy and partition function, respectively, and makes their relationship explicit. Finally, we propose potential ways to generalize the concept of typicality to systems where the standard microscopic assumptions do not hold.

Conserved quantities for Generalized Gibbs Ensemble from Entanglement

Abstract:Relaxed quantum systems with conservation laws are believed to be approximated by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which incorporates the constraints of certain conserved quantities serving as integrals of motion. By drawing analogy between reduced density matrix and GGE, we demonstrate for free fermions a generic entanglement Hamiltonian superdensity matrix (EHSM) framework for determining the set of conserved quantities in GGE. The framework proposes that such conserved quantities are linear superposition of eigenstate entanglement Hamiltonians of a larger auxiliary system, where the eigenstates are Fock states occupying the common eigenmodes. For 1D homogeneous free fermions with periodic boundary condition, which maps to 1D hardcore bosons, these conserved quantities lead to an non-Abelian GGE, which predicts the relaxation of both fermion and boson bilinears more accurately than the conventional Abelian GGE. Generalization of the framework to interacting models may provide novel numerical insights for quantum integrability.

Abstract:Gibbsian statistical mechanics (GSM) is the most widely used version of statistical mechanics among working physicists. Yet a closer look at GSM reveals that it is unclear what the theory actually says and how it bears on experimental practice. The root cause of the difficulties is the status of the Averaging Principle, the proposition that what we observe in an experiment is the ensemble average of a phase function. We review different stances toward this principle, and eventually present a coherent interpretation of GSM that provides an account of the status and scope of the principle.
