Abstract:The classical thermodynamics reflects the significant relationship between the heat and the temperature. On the basis of the relationships, according to the mathematical derivation, this paper structures the conceptions of generalized heat, generalized thermodynamic temperature, generalized entropy and so on. The series of conceptions in the classical thermodynamics is merely a special case of the generalized thermodynamics. Based on these conceptions of generalized thermodynamics, this paper presents the new expressions of the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, these expressions are endued with new explanations. The Eq. LZ = kTS given by this paper provides theoretical basis for these new expressions.

Abstract:At its origins, thermodynamics was the study of heat and engines. Carnot transformed it into a scientific discipline by explaining engine power in terms of transfer of “caloric”. That idea became the second law of thermodynamics when Thomson and Clausius reconciled Carnot’s theory with Joule’s conflicting thesis that power was derived from the consumption of heat, which was determined to be a form of energy. Eventually, Clausius formulated the 2nd-law as the universal entropy growth principle: the synthesis of transfer vs. consumption led to what became known as the mechanical theory of heat (MTH). However, by making universal-interconvertibility the cornerstone of MTH their synthesis-project was a defective one, which precluded MTH from developing the full expression of the second law. This paper reiterates that universal-interconvertibility is demonstrably false—as the case has been made by many others—by clarifying the true meaning of the mechanical equivalent of heat. And, presents a two-part formulation of the second law: universal entropy growth principle as well as a new principle that no change in Nature happens without entropy growth potential. With the new principle as its cornerstone replacing universal-interconvertibility, thermodynamics transcends the defective MTH and becomes a coherent conceptual system.

Abstract:Entanglement is central both to the foundations of quantum theory and, as a novel resource, to quantum information science. The theory of entanglement establishes basic laws, such as the non-increase of entanglement under local operations, that govern its manipulation and aims to draw from them formal analogies to the second law of thermodynamics. However, while in the second law the entropy uniquely determines whether a state is adiabatically accessible from another, the manipulation of entanglement under local operations exhibits a fundamental irreversibility which prevents the existence of such an order. Here we show that a reversible theory of entanglement and a rigorous relationship with thermodynamics may be established when one considers all non-entangling transformations. The role of the entropy in the second law is taken by the asymptotic relative entropy of entanglement in the basic law of entanglement. We show the usefulness of this new approach to general resource theories and to quantum information theory.

Abstract:It has previously been shown that it is more common to describe the evolution of the universe based on the emergence of space and the energy balance relation. Here we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the universe described by such a model. We show that the first law of thermodynamics and the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) are both satisfied and the weak energy condition are also fulfilled for two typical examples. Finally, we examine the physical consistency for the present model. The results show that there exists a good thermodynamic description for such a universe.

Abstract:The challenges and claims of hypothetical violations of the Second Law of thermodynamics have been a topic of many scientific, philosophical and social publications, even in the most prestigious scientific journals. Fascination with challenging the Second Law has further accelerated throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, and information theory. It is phenomenologically reasoned here that non-equilibrium, useful work-energy potential is always dissipated to heat, and thus thermodynamic entropy (a measure of thermal disorder, not any other disorder) is generated always and everywhere, at any scale without exception, including life processes, open systems, micro-fluctuations, gravity or entanglement. Furthermore, entropy cannot be destroyed by any means at any scale (entropy is conserved in ideal, reversible processes and irreversibly generated in real processes), and thus, entropy cannot overall decrease, but only overall increase. Creation of ordered structures or live species always dissipate useful energy and generate entropy, without exception, and thus without Second Law violation. Entropy destruction would imply spontaneous increase in non-equilibrium, with mass-energy flux displacement against cause-and-effect, natural forces, as well as negate the reversible existence of the very equilibrium. In fact, all resolved challengers’ paradoxes and misleading violations of the Second Law to date have been resolved in favor of the Second Law and never against. We are still to witness a single, still open Second Law violation, to be confirmed.

Abstract:We investigate the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) in generalized theories of gravity. We examine the total entropy evolution with time including the horizon entropy, the non-equilibrium entropy production, and the entropy of all matter, field and energy components. We derive a universal condition to protect the generalized second law and study its validity in different gravity theories. In Einstein gravity, (even in the phantom-dominated universe with a Schwarzschild black hole), Lovelock gravity, and braneworld gravity, we show that the condition to keep the GSL can always be satisfied. In $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity, the condition to protect the GSL can also hold because the gravity is always attractive and the effective Newton constant should be approximate constant satisfying the experimental bounds.

Abstract:The universal validity of the second law of thermodynamics is widely attributed to a finely tuned initial condition of the universe. This creates a problem: why is the universe atypical? We suggest that the problem is an artefact created by inappropriate transfer of the traditional concept of entropy to the whole universe. Use of what we call the relational $N$-body problem as a model indicates the need to employ two distinct entropy-type concepts to describe the universe. One, which we call entaxy, is novel. It is scale-invariant and decreases as the observable universe evolves. The other is the algebraic sum of the dimensionful entropies of branch systems (isolated subsystems of the universe). This conventional additive entropy increases. In our model, the decrease of entaxy is fundamental and makes possible the emergence of branch systems and their increasing entropy. We have previously shown that all solutions of our model divide into two halves at a unique `Janus point' of maximum disorder. This constitutes a common past for two futures each with its own gravitational arrow of time. We now show that these arrows are expressed through the formation of branch systems within which conventional entropy increases. On either side of the Janus point, this increase is in the same direction in every branch system. We also show that it is only possible to specify unbiased solution-determining data at the Janus point. Special properties of these `mid-point data' make it possible to develop a rational theory of the typicality of universes whose governing law, as in our model, dictates the presence of a Janus point in every solution. If our self-gravitating universe is governed by such a law, then the second law of thermodynamics is a necessary direct consequence of it and does not need any special initial condition.

Abstract:Materials that are constantly driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium, such as active and living systems, typically violate the Einstein relation. This may arise from active contributions to particle fluctuations which are unrelated to the dissipative resistance of the surrounding medium. We show that in these cases the widely used relation between informatic entropy production and heat dissipation does not hold. Consequently, fluctuation relations for the mechanical work, such as the Jarzynski and Crooks theorems, are invalid. We relate the breaking of the correspondence between entropy production and heat dissipation to departure from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We propose a temperature-like variable which restores this correspondence and gives rise to a generalized second law of thermodynamics, whereby the dissipated heat is necessarily nonnegative and vanishes at equilibrium. The Clausius inequality, Carnot maximum efficiency theorem, and relation between the extractable work and the change of free energy are recovered as well.

Abstract:The dynamics of molecular collisions in a macroscopic body are encoded by the parameter Thermodynamic entropy - a statistical measure of the number of molecular configurations that correspond to a given macrostate. Directionality in the flow of energy in macroscopic bodies is described by the Second Law of Thermodynamics: In isolated systems, that is systems closed to the input of energy and matter, thermodynamic entropy increases. The dynamics of the lower level interactions in populations of replicating organisms is encoded by the parameter Evolutionary entropy, a statistical measure which describes the number and diversity of metabolic cycles in a population of replicating organisms. Directionality in the transformation of energy in populations of organisms is described by the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution: In systems open to the input of energy and matter, Evolutionary entropy increases, when the energy source is scarce and diverse, and decreases when the energy source is abundant and singular. This article shows that when rho to 0, and N to infinity, where rho is the production rate of the external energy source, and N denote the number of replicating units, evolutionary entropy, an organized state of energy; and thermodynamic entropy, a randomized state of energy, coincide. Accordingly, the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution, is a generalization of the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics represents a universal principle applicable to all natural processes, physical systems, and engineering devices. Hatano and Sasa have recently put forward an extended form of the second law for transitions between nonequilibrium stationary states [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3463 (2001)]. In this paper we further extend this form to an instantaneous interpretation, which is satisfied by quite general time-dependent stochastic processes including master-equation models and Langevin dynamics without the requirements of the stationarity for the initial and final states. The theory is applied to several thermodynamic processes, and its consistence with the classical thermodynamics is shown.
Emergence of a second law of thermodynamics in isolated quantum systems

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time. This appears to conflict with the reversible evolution of isolated quantum systems under the Schrödinger equation, which preserves the von Neumann entropy. Nonetheless, one finds that with respect to many observables, expectation values approach a fixed value -- their equilibrium value. This ultimately raises the question: in what sense does the entropy of an isolated quantum system increase over time? For classical systems, one introduces the assumption of a low entropy initial state along with the concept of ignorance about the microscopic details of the physical system, leading to a statistical interpretation of the second law. By considering the observables through which we examine quantum systems, both these assumptions can be incorporated, building upon recent studies of the equilibration on average of observables. While the statistical behavior of observable expectation values is well-established, a quantitative connection to entropy increase has been lacking so far. In deriving novel bounds for the equilibration of observables, and considering the entropy of the system relative to observables, we recover a variant of the second law: the entropy with respect to a given observable tends towards its equilibrium value in the course of the system's unitary evolution. These results also support recent findings which question the necessity of non-integrability for equilibration in quantum systems. We further illustrate our bounds using numerical results from the paradigmatic example of a quantum Ising model on a chain of spins. There, we observe entropy increasing up to equilibrium values, as well as fluctuations which expose the underlying reversible evolution in accordance with the derived bounds.

Abstract:Sadi Carnot's ingenious reasoning of reversible cycles (1824) laid foundations for The Second Law before The First Law of energy conservation was even known (Joule 1843) and long before Thermodynamic concepts were established in 1850s. A century later, Bridgman (1941) ‘complained’ that “there are almost as many formulations of The Second Law as there have been discussions of it.” Even today, The Second Law remains so obscure, due to the lack of its comprehension, that it continues to attract new efforts at clarification, including this one. The Laws of Thermodynamics have much wider, including philosophical significance and implication, than their simple expressions based on the experimental observations—they are The Fundamental Laws of Nature: The Zeroth (equilibrium existentialism), The First (conservational transformationalism), The Second (irreversible directional transformationalism), and The Third (unattainability of emptiness). They are defining and unifying our comprehension of all existence and transformations in the universe. The forces, due to non‐equilibrium of mass‐energy in space (non‐uniform ‘concentrations’), causing the mass‐energy displacement, thus defining the process direction, are manifested by tendency of mass‐energy transfer in time towards common equilibrium—cause‐and‐effect forced tendency of equi‐partition of mass‐energy. It should not be confused with local creation of non‐equilibrium and/or ‘organized structures’ on expense of ‘over‐all’ non‐equilibrium, by spontaneous and irreversible conversion (dissipation) of other energy forms into the thermal energy, always and everywhere accompanied with entropy generation (randomized equi‐partition of energy per absolute temperature level). The fundamental laws of nature are considered to be axiomatic and many believe they could not be explained, proven or questioned. However, everything may and should be questioned, reasoned, explained and possibly proven. The miracles are until they are comprehended and understood.

Abstract:The importance of irreversible entropy production is emphasized. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are both expressed by equalities by giving due recognition to the irreversible production of entropy. By specialization and combination of these equations, an "efficiency equation" is derived, applicable to cyclical and steady-state processes, and useful in studying the efficiency of practical processes. The thermodynamic theory involved in determining amounts of entropy produced by irreversible processes is investigated, and six cases of irreversible entropy production are treated in detail. The "efficiency equation" is applied to four practical processes to illustrate its usefulness in analyzing the causes of inefficiency in practical situations. The first and second law equations are directly applied to two theoretical problems so selected as to illustrate differences in the theoretical importance of being able to express the second law in the form of an equality. The concept of temperature is discussed, and the extent of its validity under non-equilibrium situations is analyzed.

Abstract:Bridgman once reflected on thermodynamics that the laws of thermodynamics were formulated in their present form by the great founders of thermodynamics, Kelvin and Clausius, before all the essential physical facts were in, and there has been no adequate reexamination of the fundamentals since. Thermodynamics still has unknown possibilities waiting to be explored. This paper begins with a brief review of Clausius's work on the second law of thermodynamics and a reassessment of the content of Clausius's statement. The review tells that what Clausius originally referred to as the second law of thermodynamics was, in fact, the theorem of equivalence of transformations (TET) in a reversible cycle. On this basis, a new symmetric form of Clausius's TET is proposed. This theorem says that the two transformations, i.e., the transformation of heat to work and the transformation of work from high pressure to low pressure, should be equivalent in a reversible work-to-heat cycle. New thermodynamic cyclic laws are developed on the basis of the cycle with two work reservoirs (two pressures), which enriches the fundamental of the second law of thermodynamics.

Remarkable Evolutionary Laws of Absolute and Relative Entropies with Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The evolution of entropy is derived with respect to dynamical systems. For a stochastic system, its relative entropy $D$ evolves in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics; its absolute entropy $H$ may also be so, provided that the stochastic perturbation is additive and the flow of the vector field is nondivergent. For a deterministic system, $dH/dt$ is equal to the mathematical expectation of the divergence of the flow (a result obtained before), and, remarkably, $dD/dt = 0$. That is to say, relative entropy is always conserved. So, for a nonlinear system, though the trajectories of the state variables, say $\ve x$, may appear chaotic in the phase space, say $\Omega$, those of the density function $\rho(\ve x)$ in the new ``phase space'' $L^1(\Omega)$ are not; the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is always zero. This result is expected to have important implications for the ensemble predictions in many applied fields, and may help to analyze chaotic data sets.
Tracing the classical molecular nature of entropy generation

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics and the concept of positive entropy generation are analyzed following classical statistical mechanics methods. Previously, using the generalized Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy and its associated general entropy conservation relation, positive entropy generation expressions were obtained in agreement with phenomenological results and the work of Boltzmann and Gibbs. In this study, using the general approach, we formally and explicitly trace the specific entropy generation expressions to truncations in the full N-body description of the entropy state to a lower s-body description. Using higher-order superposition approximations, it is formally shown that the generalized Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy in the s-order state is always less than the corresponding Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy in the lower (s − 1)-order state. Using the general form of the entropy conservation equation, entropy generation is shown to be a required compensatory effect to ensure that all physical variables and physical processes associated with heat, work, temperature, etc., are independent of the particular entropy definition state.

Abstract:Many complex systems are characterized by non-Boltzmann distribution functions of their statistical variables. If one wants to -- justified or not -- hold on to the maximum entropy principle for complex statistical systems (non-Boltzmann) we demonstrate how the corresponding entropy has to look like, given the form of the corresponding distribution functions. By two natural assumptions that (i) the maximum entropy principle should hold and that (ii) entropy should describe the correct thermodynamics of a system (which produces non-Boltzmann distributions) the existence of a class of fully consistent entropies can be deduced. Classical Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy is recovered as a special case for the observed distribution being the exponential, Tsallis entropy is the special case for q-exponential observations.

Abstract:Most attempts to argue for the second law of thermodynamics fail because (1) they use the unviable frequency theory of probability and (2) they do not explain why the arrow of time seen in experiments is aligned with the thermodynamic arrow of time. I use the decision theoretic interpretation of quantum probability from the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics to solve the probability problem. I then derive a correlation between the knowledge arrow of time and the entropy arrow of time using physical constraints on knowledge creation imposed by Popper's evolutionary theory of knowledge and the many worlds interpretation.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics dictates that entropy tends to increase, leading to a notion of disorder in thermostatistics. This principle applies to both quantum thermostatistics, where the von Neumann entropy is used, and nonextensive quantum thermostatistics, which employs the Tsallis entropy. In this work, we provide operational characterizations of general entropy measures by utilizing catalytic transformations or dephasing operations on unknown states. We introduce a catalytic principle that aligns with the second law of thermodynamics, encompassing both quantum thermostatistics and nonextensive quantum thermostatistics. This principle uncovers novel features that go beyond the second law of thermodynamics by maximizing the cross-entropy during irreversible catalytic procedures. Our findings have practical implications for asymptotic tasks such as universal quantum source encoding, even when only incomplete information is available. We apply these results to single-shot state transitions.
