Abstract:Stress analysis of flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels (FSRWPVs) is very difficult because they have a special discrete structure and complex pretensions exit in the flat steel ribbons, which are wound around the inner shell layer by layer. An analytical multilayered model for stress analysis is presented in this paper, which involves the effect of prestress in every flat steel ribbon layer as well as in the inner shell. Based on this model, an optimal design method for FSRWPV is suggested, which can assure a reasonable stress level and distribution along the wall thickness during the operation. A practical example of a large FSRWPV is finally given for illustration.

Abstract:Tensile behaviors of electrorheological (ER) fluids over a wide applied field range have been determined. Normalized tensile stress and the normalized electric field have been proposed to compare the elongations of ER fluids under different conditions. This clearly showed the nature of the stress-strain curves under different initial electric fields and the structure effect during the elongations. Corresponding to the tensile behavior change, the exponent of tensile yield stress versus electric field was also found to vary in different initial field range.

Abstract:The yield stress induced by external electric field generally of the order of kV mm(-1) is an important parameter for an electrorheological (ER) fluid. An ultrahigh yield stress of over 100 kPa of a general ER fluid in a slow compressive flow under an electric field of less than 0.6 kV mm(-1) has been achieved in this study, while its shear yield stress tested on a shear rheometer is only 0.6 kPa. A lower compressive velocity results in a higher yield stress under the same electric field. The large difference between the yield stresses is ascribed to the chain aggregation caused by the two-phase flow of liquid and particles during the slow compression. The viscous force acting on particles decreases as the compressive velocity increases, while the force acting from the neighboring particles to squeeze particles out increases. The increased particle-particle interaction established more interconnectivities among chain structures and greatly enhanced the yield strength of the ER fluid. The achieved result seems to deviate from the prediction of the Deborah number at a lower test velocity. The chain structure aggregation causing much longer relaxation times under slow compression has been employed to account for this deviation and the proper calculation of the Deborah number.

Abstract:Compressions of electrorheological (ER) fluids have been carried out under different initial gap distances and different applied voltages. The nominal yield stresses of the compressed ER fluid under different conditions, according to the mechanics of compressing continuous fluids considering the yield stress of the plastic fluid, have been calculated. Curves of nominal yield stress under different applied voltages at an initial gap distance of 4 mm overlapped well and were shown to be proportional to the square of the external electric field and agree well with the traditional description. With the decrease of the initial gap distance, the difference between the nominal yield stress curves increased. The gap distance effect on the compression of ER fluids could not be explained by the traditional description based on the Bingham model and the continuous media theory. An explanation based on the mechanics of particle chain is proposed to describe the gap distance effect on the compression of ER fluids.

Abstract:Shear tests of an electrorheological fluid with pre-applied electric field and compression along the field direction are carried out. The results show that pre-compressions can increase the shear yield stress up to ten times. Under the same external electric field strength, a higher compressive strain corresponds to a larger shear yield stress enhancement but with slight current density decrease, which shows that the particle interaction potentials are not increased by compressions but the compression-induced chain aggregation dominates the shear yield stress improvement. This pre-compression technique might be useful for developing high performance flexible ER or magnetorheological couplings.

Abstract:Stepwise compression of electrorheological (ER) fluids based on zeolite and silicone oil under constant voltages was experimentally investigated. The difference between peak compressive stress and stable compressive stress obtained during the stepwise compression changed with the change of applied voltages and compressive strains. The decay ratio of compressive stress, which may depict the solidification level of ER fluids under external electric fields, decreased with the increase of electric field and compressive strains. Also both the peak compressive stress and the stable compressive stress were shown to be determined by the electric field under low applied voltages. With the increase of the applied voltage, ER fluids were shown to be described by the mechanics of compressing a continuous fluid. At a much stronger ER effect, a deviation from the prediction of the continuous media theory occurred, and structure strengthening of ER fluids by compression should be considered.

Abstract:The dependence of the normal stress on the shear rate and magnetic field strength in the shear flow of magnetorheological (MR) fluids has been studied experimentally. An obvious normal stress could be observed when the applied magnetic field was higher than a critical value. The normal stress increases considerably with increase of the shear rate and magnetic field, and decreases suddenly and significantly upon the onset of shear thickening in MR fluids. The ratio of shear stress to normal stress, an analogue of the friction coefficient, increases with increase of the shear rate, but decreases with increase of the applied magnetic field. Along with the shear stress, the normal stress in MR fluids could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the MR effect, and the evolution of the particle structure in shear flow, and may have important implications for preparing high performance magnetostrictive elastomers with high force output along the magnetic field direction.

Abstract:A series of unidirectional compression tests on electrorheological fluids has been carried out with different plate sizes, initial plate separations, and applied voltages. Experimental results of compression pressure were compared with the continuum non-Newtonian squeeze-flow theory in a normalized form. It was found that the compression resistance of the electrorheological fluid in an electric field was much higher than that predicted by the theory when the fluid was compressed to some extent and/or when the initial plate separation was relatively small. Characteristics of the pressure variation with the reduction in electrode gap width have been analyzed, and the compression behaviors under different experimental conditions have been discussed in terms of the morphology of particle aggregations under compression.
Experimental Investigation of Compression Speed Influence on the Compressive Resistance of Electrorheological Fluids

Abstract:The compression speed is a very important parameter in applications of electrorheological (ER) fluids based on their compression resistance. The design and control of ER devices will fail without consideration of the influence of the compression speed. Experiments showed that with the same external applied voltage, the compressive resistance of ER fluids decreased significantly with increasing compression speed, which is similar to the influence of shear rate on the shear strength of ER fluids. The current intensity flowing through the ER fluid during compression varies in a similar trend as the compression stress, which indicates that the destruction of the chain structures in the fluid become more severe with increasing compression speed. The decrease of the compression resistance is ascribed to the decrease of the ratio of the polarization to the viscous forces, which prevents reconstruction of the chain structure and reduces the average local electric field strength between particles.

Abstract:This paper examines the chain structure factor evolution of electrorheological (ER) fluids in compressive flow. The yield strength of ER fluids was modeled based on a single pair electrostatic interaction between particles and the structure factor, which includes all the effects except the single pair electrostatic interaction between particles presented by the local electric field strength between particles. Both the mechanical and electrical properties of ER fluids in compressive flow have been experimentally determined. The nominal shear yield stress of the ER fluid in compressive flow was derived by assuming that it was a transformed shear flow of a Bingham fluid. The single pair particle interaction strength is related to the measured electric current, which reflects the local electric field strength between particles. The structure factor evolution in compressive flow was derived by comparing the nominal shear yield stress and the single pair particle interaction strength. As expected, the calculated structure factor increased significantly using this method, much higher than that described by the many-body effect and the difference of dipole-dipole interaction and multi-dipole interaction between particles. Direct mechanical contacts and frictional forces between particles are thought to contribute significantly to the high structure factor and nominal shear yield stress of the ER fluid in compressive flow. This behavior might be similar in magnetorheological (MR) fluids.

Abstract:Electrorheological (ER) fluid based on zeolite and silicone oil under elongation, compression, and shearing was investigated at room temperature. Dc electric fields were applied on the ER fluid when elongation and compression were carried out on a self-constructed test system. The shear yield stress, presenting the macroscopic interactions of particles in the ER fluid along the direction of shearing and perpendicular to the direction of the electric field, was also obtained by a HAAKE RV20 rheometer. The tensile yield stress, presenting the macroscopic interactions of particles in the ER fluid along the direction of the electric field, was achieved as the peak value in the elongating curve with an elongating yield strain of 0.15-0.20. A shear yield angle of about 15 degrees -18.5 degrees reasonably connected tensile yield stress with shear yield stress, agreeing with the shear yield angle tested well by other researchers. The compressing tests showed that the ER fluid has a high compressive modulus under a small compressive strain lower than 0.1. The compressive stress has an exponential relationship with the compressive strain when it is higher than 0.1, and it is much higher than shear yield stress.

Abstract:This work is concerned with an experimental and theoretical study on compression properties of magnetorheological fluids under the nonuniform field. Experimental tests of unidirectional monotonic compression were firstly carried out under constant area operation using a commercial plate–plate magneto-rheometer where the magnetic field radial distribution was nonuniform. Normal forces increased with decreasing of the gap distance, and two regions were found through the normal force versus gap distance curves: elastic deformation and plastic flow. High normal forces could be obtained in the case of high magnetic field, high compression velocity, low initial gap distance, high volume fraction, and high medium viscosity. In the plastic flow region, the normal force with the gap distance could be fitted with a power law relation \(F_{\textrm {N}} \propto h^n\), and the index n was around well in the range (−3, −2). Taking nonuniform magnetic field into account, the theoretical modeling in the plastic flow was then developed to calculate the normal force under compression based on the continuum media theory. Compared to the uniform field, there existed a magnetic field gradient-induced normal force under nonuniform field. Considering the sealing and squeeze strengthening effect, the gap distance-dependent shear yield stress was proposed, and a good correspondence between the theoretical and experimental results was obtained.

Abstract:Digital simulation of contacting process between the teeth was performed and the stress analysis of stream setting vessel was made by elastic finite element method.The researchers evaluated the fatigue life and stress intensity of the dangerous cross-section.Considering the yielding possibility of the teeth,the elastic-plasticity finite element analysis of the model was conducted and compared with the elastic solution.The results of the two methods are very similar,and both of which show that the contact pressure reduces progressively from both edges of the tooth to the middle and distributes along the radial direction like a parabola.The max stress appears at the root of top flange teeth.This demonstrates that the solution that is computed based upon the elastic assumption is reasonable.A lot of engineering experiences have proved that this kind of machines analyzed by elastic contact element method can meet the requirements on structure strength and fatigue life.

Abstract:Based on normal mechanics model of thermal elasto-plastic contact adopting anisotropic fractal geometrical theory, three parameters were used as argument, then the extended fractal model of thermal elasto-plastic contact of rough surfaces was established for the problem of ignoring the effect of surface roughness in mechanical parts modeling.The theoretical values of normal load in the internal combustion engine cylinder head-cylinder head gasket joints were calculated with constant properties and variable properties, respectively.Then, these theoretical values were analyzed and compared with simulation values which resulted from the four-body contact simplified model composed of cylinder head-cylinder head gasket-engine block-bolts.The results clearly show that in the cylinder ring near the two exhaust valves, whether considering the variable properties or not has a significant impact on the results.Contact surface roughness has an impact on the normal contact load.The results calculated from smooth surface finite element modeling has great deviation from the actual situation.

Abstract:The effect of the boundary friction coefficient on the rheological properties of the electrorheological (ER) fluids in quasistatic and dynamic states is investigated by computer simulation. The relation between the shear stress and the boundary friction coefficient in quasistatic and dynamic states is discussed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the trend matches the previously reported experimental results well. The flow curves of ER fluids, under different friction coefficients, are calculated, and it is found that the friction coefficient affects the flow curves. In two dimensions, the transitions in structure corresponding to the shear stress variations are presented to understand the mechanism of ER fluids.

Abstract:The electrorheology (ER) of suspensions based on polystyrene/polyaniline (PS/PANI) core/shell structured microspheres and those based on disk-like zeolite particles at different electric fields and particle volume fractions have been studied, respectively. Both types of ER fluids showed abrupt shear thickening under high electric fields and low shear rates, as well as shear thinning when the shear rate increased. A normalized method that considers the effects of electric field strength, shear rate and particle volume fraction was proposed to compare the rheological curves of the two ER fluids. The curves evaluated from the normalization method showed similar shear thinning at low shear rates and the hydrodynamic effect at high shear rates. Shear thinning represents the structure destroyed by shearing, and shear thickening at low shear regions indicates the dramatic structure change. The particle volume fraction and structure factor effects demonstrate that the mechanical contact between particles and the wall of the electrodes is crucial to the shear strength of ER fluids, indicating an electric/magnetic field modulated friction mechanism of the ER and magnetorheological (MR) effects.

Abstract:Dynamic viscoelasticity of electrorheological fluids based on microcrystalline cellulose/castor oil suspensions was experimentally investigated in squeeze flow. The dependence of storage modulus G′ and loss modulus G″ parallel to external electric field on electric fields and strain amplitudes is presented. The experiments show that, when external electric field is higher than the critical field, the viscoelasticity of the ER fluids converts from linear to nonlinear, and the ER fluids transfer from solid-like state to fluid state with the growth of strain amplitude. The influences of strain amplitude and oscillatory frequency on the nonlinearity of viscoelasticity were also studied.

Abstract:It is known that macroscopic properties of colloidal suspensions are often determined by the microstructure of the particles in the suspensions, depending on the interparticle, Brownian, and hydrodynamic ( if any) forces. We take electrorheological (ER) fluids as an example. By using a computer simulation and an experimental approach, we investigate the structure of ER fluids subjected to both an electric field and a shear flow. The microstructure evolution from random structure, to chains, and then to stable lamellar patterns, observed in the experiments, agrees very well with that obtained in the simulations. It is shown that the formation of such lamellar patterns originates from the difference between the dipole moment induced in the particles suspended in the ER fluids without shear and the one with shear. The results on the relaxation process of structural formation and the internal structure of layers are also presented. Thus, it seems possible to achieve various structures and hence desired macroscopic properties of colloidal suspensions by adjusting external fields and, simultaneously, a shear flow.
