Abstract:The enhancement of yield stress of NaY/insulating oil electrorheological (ER) fluid is found by adding a liquid crystal additive with a higher dielectric constant than that of the carrier fluid. The yield stress increases with additive's concentration and saturates at high concentrations. A polarization model has been suggested to understand the role of the additives. The theoretical calculations agree with our experiments very well. We show that adding a small amount of additive with a high dielectric constant can drastically improve the yield stress even in a 'dry' ER fluid if the conductivity or dielectric constant of the additive is still much smaller than that of the dispersed particles.

Abstract:Based on conduction model and cubic particle model, the relationship between current density and shear yield stress of electrorheological (ER) fluids was calculated and compared with some reported experimental results. The conductivity of the insulating oils is found to have been changed by the mixed particles. Several ways to decrease insulating liquid conductivity and increase the conductivity ratio of ER fluids have been proposed to prepare ER fluids with high shear yield stresses but low current densities.

Abstract:By incorporating polar fibers into the design of electrorheological (ER) fluids, a 130% performance improvement can be achieved with the addition of only 0.8 vol% of polar long fibers. We quantitatively analyzed the impact of relatively long fibers on improving ER performance by measuring the yield stress, shear stress, and current density after adding fibers. Both optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to observe and analyze the interaction between ER particles and polar fibers. The results indicate that, under the influence of an electric field, the fibers transform the one-dimensional chain-like structure into a two-dimensional mesh structure, greatly improving the ER performance. The transformation of structure induced by the polar fibers in the ER fluids amplifies the ER effect. However, the inclusion of non-polar fibers does not contribute to this enhancement, as a point of comparison. Moreover, to ensure the universality of this method, we used two different types of ER fluids in experiments. The utilization of this method offers a straightforward, environmentally friendly, and highly effective approach. Furthermore, this study provides a novel technical solution aimed at enhancing the performance of ER fluids.

Abstract:The electrorheology (ER) of suspensions based on polystyrene/polyaniline (PS/PANI) core/shell structured microspheres and those based on disk-like zeolite particles at different electric fields and particle volume fractions have been studied, respectively. Both types of ER fluids showed abrupt shear thickening under high electric fields and low shear rates, as well as shear thinning when the shear rate increased. A normalized method that considers the effects of electric field strength, shear rate and particle volume fraction was proposed to compare the rheological curves of the two ER fluids. The curves evaluated from the normalization method showed similar shear thinning at low shear rates and the hydrodynamic effect at high shear rates. Shear thinning represents the structure destroyed by shearing, and shear thickening at low shear regions indicates the dramatic structure change. The particle volume fraction and structure factor effects demonstrate that the mechanical contact between particles and the wall of the electrodes is crucial to the shear strength of ER fluids, indicating an electric/magnetic field modulated friction mechanism of the ER and magnetorheological (MR) effects.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the relations among electrorheological (ER) effects of ER fluids, zero-field dispersity of colloidal particles and particle wettability, and find that well dispersed particles resulting from particle wettability have much stronger attraction than those aggregated into different clusters. We reveal that, to achieve ER effects, besides improving dielectric properties of ER particles, it is also helpful to reduce the surface tension of liquids, which leads to higher wettability of suspended particles and thus better zero-field dispersity of the particles due to lyophilic repulsive forces between them. Our theoretical results are applied to explain qualitatively the experiments by others. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Shear tests of an electrorheological fluid with pre-applied electric field and compression along the field direction are carried out. The results show that pre-compressions can increase the shear yield stress up to ten times. Under the same external electric field strength, a higher compressive strain corresponds to a larger shear yield stress enhancement but with slight current density decrease, which shows that the particle interaction potentials are not increased by compressions but the compression-induced chain aggregation dominates the shear yield stress improvement. This pre-compression technique might be useful for developing high performance flexible ER or magnetorheological couplings.

Abstract:Much attention has been given to electrorheological (ER) fluids because of the ER effect, which has been described by a large number of researchers as a notable increase in the apparent viscosity of a fluid upon the application of an electric field. The description of ER effects is, however, not accurate at high shear rates. To clarify the discrepancy, we analyze and compute the apparent viscosity as a function of shear rate for ER fluid flow between rotating coaxial cylinders in the presence of an electric field. The theoretical predictions show that the increase of electric intensity contributes little to the apparent viscosity enhancement at high shear rates, while ER effects for ER fluids with a higher polarization rate still exist and ER devices possess controllability in this regime. Description of the ER effect by the apparent viscosity leads to an unrealistic conclusion that ER effects disappear at high shear rates, because the apparent viscosity of ER fluids approaches the value for Newtonian fluids. Therefore, it is concluded that the proper description of ER effects, i.e., one that holds uniformly for any strain rate when ER effects exist, is manifested by a remarkable increase in the extra stress rather than in the apparent viscosity of ER fluids.

Abstract:We investigated the relations between the yield stress of polar-molecule dominated electrorheological (PM-ER) fluids and the shape of ellipsoidal particles of the fluids. It is found that, when the short axis of an ellipsoidal particle is along an external electric field while the volume of the particle keeps constant, the shorter of the short axis is, the stronger the attraction between the two adjacent particles would be. The equipment used for yield stress determination, the experiment and calculation of the condition under which the sample are short-axis chained, the detailed process of sample preparation and sample characterization will be described and discussed in an extended form of this paper.

Abstract:Macroscopic properties of electrorheological (ER) fluids are often determined by the spatial arrangement of the suspended particles. We investigate the microstructure of polydisperse ER fluids at low concentrations in a DC electric field. Optical microscopy reveals that the particles with polydispersity in size or in both size and dielectric property are mixed in stable single particle width chains, showing different spatial arrangement. This qualitatively agrees with the theoretical results obtained from an energy approach based on the finite element analysis. Thus, it seems possible to achieve various microstructures and hence desired macroscopic properties of ER fluids, by choosing appropriate polydispersity.

Abstract:The yield stress induced by external electric field generally of the order of kV mm(-1) is an important parameter for an electrorheological (ER) fluid. An ultrahigh yield stress of over 100 kPa of a general ER fluid in a slow compressive flow under an electric field of less than 0.6 kV mm(-1) has been achieved in this study, while its shear yield stress tested on a shear rheometer is only 0.6 kPa. A lower compressive velocity results in a higher yield stress under the same electric field. The large difference between the yield stresses is ascribed to the chain aggregation caused by the two-phase flow of liquid and particles during the slow compression. The viscous force acting on particles decreases as the compressive velocity increases, while the force acting from the neighboring particles to squeeze particles out increases. The increased particle-particle interaction established more interconnectivities among chain structures and greatly enhanced the yield strength of the ER fluid. The achieved result seems to deviate from the prediction of the Deborah number at a lower test velocity. The chain structure aggregation causing much longer relaxation times under slow compression has been employed to account for this deviation and the proper calculation of the Deborah number.
Polar-molecules-driven Enhanced Colloidal Electrostatic Interactions and Their Applications in Achieving High Active Electrorheological Materials

Abstract:We have fabricated a class of colloidal electrorheological (ER) fluids, in which suspended TiO 2 particles were synthesized by a sol-gel method and modified by 1,4-butyrolactone molecules with a permanent molecular dipole moment of 4.524 D. Compared with pure TiO 2 ER fluids, the quasi-static yield stress of the polar- molecules-modified ER fluid is enhanced as high as 48.1 kPa when subjected to an external electric field of 5 kV/mm. Also, it possesses other attractive characters such as low current density (<14 μA/cm 2 ) and low sedimentation. Based on a Green’s function method, we present a first-principles approach to investigate colloidal electrostatic interactions. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory has been shown for the enhancement ratio of quasi-static yield stress, which quantitatively reveals that enough polar molecules oriented within the field-directed gap between the colloidal particles can unexpectedly enhance the interactions, thus yielding the unusual enhancement. This shows a promising and flexible direction for achieving more highly active ER materials.

Abstract:The behavior of zeolite-based electrorheological fluids is influenced by the type and the number of cations, the pore-opening size and other structure properties of zeolites. It has been confirmed that the crystal polarization resulted from the migration of cations under high electric field is the foundation of the electrorheological effects of zeolites M and A. For these types of zeolites, higher cation content and larger pore opening size are more favorable for obtaining good electrorheological properties. Differed from all the other zeolites, NaZSM-5-based electrorheological fluid displays extraordinary strong static yield stress and very small leak current at high electric field. A new mechanism for the pentasil-type zeolite crystal polarization under high electric field, i.e., the framework deformation mechanism, has been suggested.

Abstract:Electrorheological (ER) fluid based on zeolite and silicone oil under elongation, compression, and shearing was investigated at room temperature. Dc electric fields were applied on the ER fluid when elongation and compression were carried out on a self-constructed test system. The shear yield stress, presenting the macroscopic interactions of particles in the ER fluid along the direction of shearing and perpendicular to the direction of the electric field, was also obtained by a HAAKE RV20 rheometer. The tensile yield stress, presenting the macroscopic interactions of particles in the ER fluid along the direction of the electric field, was achieved as the peak value in the elongating curve with an elongating yield strain of 0.15-0.20. A shear yield angle of about 15 degrees -18.5 degrees reasonably connected tensile yield stress with shear yield stress, agreeing with the shear yield angle tested well by other researchers. The compressing tests showed that the ER fluid has a high compressive modulus under a small compressive strain lower than 0.1. The compressive stress has an exponential relationship with the compressive strain when it is higher than 0.1, and it is much higher than shear yield stress.

Abstract:A rotating particle in electrorheological (ER) fluid leads to a displacement of its polarization charges on the surface which relax toward the external applied field E0, resulting in a steady-state polarization at an angle with respect to E0. This dynamic effect has shown to affect the ER fluid properties dramatically. In this paper, we develop a dynamic effective medium theory (EMT) for a system containing rotating particles of finite volume fraction. This is a generalization of established EMT to account for the interactions between many rotating particles. While the theory is valid for three dimensions, the results in a special two-dimensional configuration show that the system exhibits an off-diagonal polarization response in addition to a diagonal polarization response, which resembles the classic Hall effect. The diagonal response monotonically decreases with increasing rotational speed, whereas the off-diagonal response exhibits a maximum at a reduced rotational angular velocity omega0, compared to the case of isolated rotating particles. This implies a way of measurement on the interacting relaxation time. The dependencies of the diagonal and off-diagonal responses on various factors, such as omega0, the volume fraction, and the dielectric contrast, are discussed.

Abstract:The associated effects of polarization strength, polarization rate, and dielectric loss on ER performance ware studied by means of the correlation of rheological properties of carbon-doped TiO2 ER fluids with experimental results of flow-modified permittivity (FMP). We prepared ER fluids with carbon-doped TiO2 powders of different conductivity via controlling carbonization temperature and organic contents. The experiments present the optimum organic contents of 4.6% to 9.2% and the optimum carbonization temperature of around 673 K for the better ER activity. The role of conductivity in ER performance is testified. FMP measurements of fluids were performed under weak and strong exciting fields respectively. Under weak exciting field, FMP effects are hardly detectable; while under high exciting field, FMP effects become significant which reflect ER particle configurations, particle orientations, and limited dielectric response time in the combined electric and shear fields. The shear field strength, exciting field strength and Frequency are the three main factors influencing the FMP effects. The FMP data can be modeled and qualitatively explained by introducing two characteristic shear rates of D-c1 and D-c2, J=J(0)+J(1)exp(-D/D-c1)+ (J2)exp(-D/D-c2) with D being shear rate.
Structure factor of electrorheological fluids in compressive flow

Abstract:This paper examines the chain structure factor evolution of electrorheological (ER) fluids in compressive flow. The yield strength of ER fluids was modeled based on a single pair electrostatic interaction between particles and the structure factor, which includes all the effects except the single pair electrostatic interaction between particles presented by the local electric field strength between particles. Both the mechanical and electrical properties of ER fluids in compressive flow have been experimentally determined. The nominal shear yield stress of the ER fluid in compressive flow was derived by assuming that it was a transformed shear flow of a Bingham fluid. The single pair particle interaction strength is related to the measured electric current, which reflects the local electric field strength between particles. The structure factor evolution in compressive flow was derived by comparing the nominal shear yield stress and the single pair particle interaction strength. As expected, the calculated structure factor increased significantly using this method, much higher than that described by the many-body effect and the difference of dipole-dipole interaction and multi-dipole interaction between particles. Direct mechanical contacts and frictional forces between particles are thought to contribute significantly to the high structure factor and nominal shear yield stress of the ER fluid in compressive flow. This behavior might be similar in magnetorheological (MR) fluids.

Abstract:Tensile behaviors of electrorheological (ER) fluids over a wide applied field range have been determined. Normalized tensile stress and the normalized electric field have been proposed to compare the elongations of ER fluids under different conditions. This clearly showed the nature of the stress-strain curves under different initial electric fields and the structure effect during the elongations. Corresponding to the tensile behavior change, the exponent of tensile yield stress versus electric field was also found to vary in different initial field range.

Abstract:Electrorheological fluid (ER) microstructures were observed during chain forming, flow and yield after chain forming, and structural changes during shearing with various high voltages to investigate the relationship between the ER microstructure and the ER macro-mechanical properties, such as the viscosity and the shear yield stress. The results show that the ER micro-chain structure changes with changing electric fields and motion states, which affects the mechanical properties. The results also show that the ER micro-chain structure slips and yields mainly around the plate electrode, and that single chains form discrete zonal structures during shearing.
