Abstract:In analogy to the impurity levels of semiconductors, optical cavities are created if irregular regions are introduced into the perfect photonic crystals. Photonic crystal single defect cavity is expected to obtain nearly thresholdless laser because it can create wavelength-scale small resonant mode with high-quality factors and high spontaneous emission coupling. In this paper, we have studied a new type of defect called annular microcavity created by drilling a circular hole in a usual defect cylinder in two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal by using the supercell method. The hole within the rod greatly modifies the defect modes by controlling filling fraction of dielectric material from the inner of the defect and lowering symmetry of the defect. It is found that the annular defect provides extra two more variables due to the hole (radius and refractive index) that can be utilized to alter the properties of the defect. And this opens up a new method to achieve and tune acceptor-mode cavity. Moving the hole can split the degenerate modes. The departure displacement determines the splitting space and the departure angle determines symmetry of distributions of electric fields. These results exhibit more advantages over the conventional defects and may be utilized to single-mode operation of microcavity laser.

Abstract:A new type nonplanar ring laser,which consists of only two spherical mirrors,was presented and analyzed.One of the mirrors is coated on the curved surface of the laser crystal,so a more compact cavity is formed.The laser beam is reflected several times on the same cavity mirror in a round trip to provide the possibility to be multi-end-pumped,which can significantly reduce the thermal effect for a given total pumping power.The modes of the nonplanar ring laser were given and the mirror separations of different modes were calculated and the beam paths were simulated.Operations of different modes were performed and the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model.

Abstract:In this paper, output characteristics of single-longitudinal-mode Ho: YLF ring laser are firstly investigated in double corner cubes configuration. Single-longitudinal-mode laser output is realized by a faraday rotator and a half-wave plate, and an F-P etalon is inserted into the cavity to realize wavelength tuning. The principle of unidirectional operation of the Ho: YLF ring laser with double corner cubes is firstly analyzed with the method of optic matrix and transition matrix. A highest single-longitudinal-mode power of 733 mW at 2065.68 nm is achieved and the slope efficiency is 12%. The tunable range is about 238 GHz and M-2 factor is 1.21. The results show that the single-longitudinal-mode Ho: YLF ring cavity with double corner cubes is a potential way to improve the misalignment sensitivity.

Abstract:A multi-end-pumped two-mirrors nonplanar ring laser with output on single point was demonstrated.The beam propagated along a nonplanar loop within the cavity consisting of two mirrors,one of which was coated on the curved surface of the laser crystal.The laser provides the capability in being easily multi-end-pumped to reduce thermal induced effects and scale output power.Two important parameters of beam loops were described,and simulation diagrams of the beam loops were shown.Using the output coupler with the fan-shaped distribution of reflectivity,the output on single point was achieved.Double-end-pumped operations of different modes with output on single point were performed and the experimental results were given.

Abstract:A novel multi-end-pumped nonplanar ring Nd:YAG laser with two-mirror cavity, was demonstrated. A model was developed for attaining all beam loop modes of the laser cavity and calculating the mirror separation of each mode. With single-diode laser pumping, the operations of different modes at 1.064 mu m were performed and the experimental results are in excellent agreement with the model. Using three laser diodes as the pumping sources led to over threefold increase in output power.

Abstract:A novel tunable laser which can achieve mode-hop-free single-electrode tuning based on a ring coupled cavity is proposed. The device comprises of a passive ring resonator coupled to two optical waveguides, two far ends of which are terminated by partially reflecting mirrors to constitute a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity. The waveguide in the ring resonator is divided into a tuning segment and a bias segment. The FP cavity contains an active gain waveguide and passive waveguide segments. A tuning electrode covers the tuning segment inside the ring resonator and the passive waveguide segments in the FP cavity. Mode-hop-free operation with a single-electrode tuning is achieved by properly designing the tuning electrode lengths within the FP cavity and within the ring resonator. Numerical analysis shows that a large mode-hop-free tuning range (>6 nm) with a very high single-mode selectivity can be achieved with an injection current less than 100 mA.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate types of silicon ring reflectors on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform. These reflectors are used for realizing the silicon hybrid external cavity lasers. A suspended edge coupler is used to connect the reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) chip and the reflectors. The properties of the reflectors and the hybrid external cavity lasers with these reflectors are illustrated. The experimental results show that all of those reflectors have a high reflectivity and the highest reflectivity can up to be 95%. The lowest insertion loss can be as low as 0.4dB. The output power of the hybrid external cavity lasers with these reflectors can reach mW magnitude and the highest output power is 6.1mW. Over 30dB side mode suppression ratio is obtained.

Abstract:The matrix eigenvalues method is used to analyze the laser cavity in which the traditional spherical mirror is replaced by the phase type diffraction optical elements. The authors analyze, the characteristics of the modes under the conditions of different Frenesl number. The results show that this laser cavity can enhance the discrimination between spatial modes effectively and can be used to design the output laser beam.

Abstract:A tunable laser based on double-ring external resonant cavity is designed, fabricated and tested. The double-ring resonator external cavity consists of a silicon waveguide ring resonator, a p-i-n doped silicon ring resonator, and a superluminescent diode (SLED). The laser is fabricated on a SOI wafer and the wavelength is tuned by injecting electrical currents to p-i-n structures. In the experiment, it measures 45.8 nm wavelength tuning with 110 GHz channel spacing and the average output power is approximately -8 dBm. It advances in high tuning speed, large side mode suppression ratio, and low manufacture cost, such has potential applications in high speed WDM networks.

Abstract:A multi-end-pumped nonplanar ring laser with a two-mirror resonator has been demonstrated. Two important parameters of the beam loops are described, and simulation diagrams of the beam loops are shown. Using an output coupler with a fan-shaped distribution in reflectivity, multi-end-pumped operation with the output beam from a single point has been achieved, and the experimental results show that the laser could be multi-end-pumped to reduce thermal effects and multiply the fracture limit of the laser crystal.

Abstract:We explored experimentally the mode-locking (ML) evolution mechanism of a dual-ring fiber laser. Increase of the total pump power up to 860 mW allowed the observation of the state changes from single-ring ML, dual-ring ML, to dual-ring self-starting ML. Moreover, a group of wave plates and a fixed polarization beam splitter were applied in each subring as precise attenuators. Rotation of each wave plate for an entire turn allowed the investigation of the ML evolution of the two subrings based on the intracavity power variation in each subring. The variation periodicity of the output power was analyzed for each subring and was found to be consistent with the theoretical results. Furthermore, the ML detachment threshold in each subring was estimated to explain the ML evolution. Our study provides a deeper understanding of the ML evolution in dual-ring fiber lasers and can aid their future optimal design for dual comb applications.

Abstract:The optical feedback characteristics in a short cavity dual modes HeNe laser are studied under different modes strength condition. Modes competition can be obviously observed during optical feedback. The whole laser intensity curve has intensity branches and its leaning direction is related to the moving direction of the external feedback mirror. There are two cross points at different voltage levels between the two orthogonally polarized lights in a period of the optical feedback fringe and the order that the cross points come out is different when the feedback mirror moves at different direction which can be used for direction discrimination. Sometimes there are two peaks of the same size in a period of the optical feedback curve which can be used to improve the resolution of an optical feedback system.
Theoretical and Experimental Studies of Output Coupling Ratio Tunable Double-Corner-cube-retroreflector Ring Cavity

Abstract:The polarization state in a double-corner-cube-retroreflector (DCCR) ring cavity is analyzed using Jones matrix. Based on the analysis results, an output coupling ratio tunable DCCR ring cavity created by employing a polarization beam splitter, and wave plates (including λ / 2 plate and λ / 4 plate) is studied theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical output coupling ratio tuning ranges are calculated as 0.01 % ∼ 80.86 % by rotating the λ / 2 plate, 0 ∼ 89.32 % by rotating the λ / 4 plate, and 2.71 % ∼ 81.37 % by rotating corner-cube retroreflector (CCR). The experimental measurement results are consistent with theoretical expectations. An output coupling ratio tunable Er:YAG laser with a DCCR ring cavity is also set up to verify the beneficial effect of output coupling ratio tuning. At given pump power, by tuning the output coupling ratio, the laser obtains optimum operation efficiency and realizes wavelength conversion between 1645 and 1617 nm.

Abstract:A new type of CO2 laser resonator with hole-coupling output is presented in this paper. The laser beam in the resonator is focused into the reflector assembly system composed of a reflector with a small central hole and an output mirror with a central coupling hole. According to the theory of diffraction optics, the laser optical field distribution in the cavity and the far-field distribution are analyzed by numerical calculation. In the experiment, the variations of the laser output power with continuous current discharged is measured. The maximum laser output power is 14.5W at the discharge current 12mA. The laser power distribution of the output beam at the distance of 1m is measured, and the result is in good accordance with numerical calculation. The laser cavity with hole-coupling can be used in intracavity pumped THz laser output and other types of intracavity pumped lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the controllable laser output of cylindrical vector (CV) beams, which feature flexibility, high efficiency, and good beam quality. Particularly, the CV laser beams have negligible radial components, distinguishing themselves from the extra-cavity-generated CV beams. The output state is controlled by an intra-cavity vortex half-wave plate (VWP). By changing the topological charge (l) of VWP, we produce l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams for example. Through rotating the half-wave plate inside the cavity, the laser outputs arbitrary CV beams around the equator of the corresponding high-order Poincaré spheres. For l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams, the polarization purities are as high as 97.8% and 96.7%, the sloping efficiencies are 15.5% and 5.4%, and the beam quality factors are 2.10 and 3.31, respectively. Our result provides a reliable CV laser source for advanced applications in optical imaging and optical manipulation.

Abstract:The cat's eye resonator is designed with a cat's eye reflector as the resonator mirror. The configuration of the cat's eye reflector is described. The relation between the focal length of the cat's eye reflector and the distance between the convex lens and the concave mirror of the cat's eye reflector is indicated. Through controlling that distance in the cat's eye reflector, laser transverse mode is selected to ensure fundamental transverse mode output. In Newton-Cotes method based on the diffractive integral equation of the laser, laser transverse mode of the cat's eye cavity laser under variable parameters is analyzed. The eigenvalue ηmn and power loss which every transverse mode corresponds with are calculated. The parameter assuring fundamental transverse mode output obtained is well accordant to the experimental results. Therefore, a new convenient on-line means for the control and selection of the laser transverse mode is discovered.
