Abstract:Since it was first proposed one and a half decades ago, the coordinate transformation method of Chandezon et al.1 (the C method) for analyzing surface-relief gratings has gone through many stages of improvement and extension.2-10 By now, it is truly one of the most efficient and versatile theoretical tools for modeling gratings of arbitrary permittivity and (reasonably) arbitrary profiles. The most distinctive features of the C method, not shared with any other rigorous grating methods, are its virtually uniform convergence with respect to the incident polarization (TE, TM, or conical) and the medium permittivity (dielectric or metal), and its perfect suitability for modeling multilayer-coated gratings.

Abstract:A simple variable transformation that consists of two joined straight-line segments per grating period is proposed for the parameterized coordinate transformation method (the C method). With this bilinear parameterization, the C method can produce convergent numerical results for gratings of deep and smooth profiles with a groove depth-to-period ratio as high as 10, which to date has been far out of reach of the C method. Abstract:The coordinate transformation method for modeling surface-relief gratings is reformulated with use of the recent results [J. Opt. Sec. Am. A 13, 1870 (1996)] on the Fourier factorization of products that contain discontinuous periodic functions. The matrix operator of the eigenvalue problem in the traditional formulation is modified following the correct Fourier factorization procedures. In addition, a new and simpler matrix operator is derived. Both the modified old operator and the new operator greatly improve the convergence of the coordinate transformation method for gratings whose profiles have sharp edges. Abstract:Gratings are key components in many optical systems such as spectrometers. Improving their dispersion is very important for their applications, but improving the single-order diffraction efficiency of an ultrahigh dispersion grating is still very challenging. Here, we propose an analytical approach for the design of a new type of grating named hybrid grating, which consists of a subwavelength grating and a non-subwavelength grating. The proposed analytical approach is based on a physical model in which the non-subwavelength grating acts as an ultrathin reflection grating and the subwavelength grating acts as an antireflection coating. Using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically demonstrate that multiple hybrid gratings designed at different wavelengths using the proposed analytical approach show a diffraction efficiency of greater than 95 % in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light, an angular dispersion of greater than 0.8 mrad/nm and a deflection angle of greater than 80 degrees. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that by using a combined approach to optimize the parameters of a hybrid grating, the diffraction efficiency in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light can be increased to more than 97 % under the condition that the angular dispersion and the deflection angle of the hybrid grating remain unchanged. Our work provides an avenue for rapid design of gratings with high angular dispersion, large deflection angle and high diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:We reformulate the coordinate transformation method (C method) for gratings with a vertical facet or overhanging profile (overhanging gratings), in which no tensor concept is involved, only the knowledge of elementary mathematics and Maxwell's equations in the rectangular coordinate system is used, and we provide a detailed recipe for programming. This formulation is easy to understand and implement. It adopts the strategy of a rotating coordinate system from Plumey et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A14, 610 (1997)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.14.000610] and expresses it with the method of changing variables from Li et al. [Appl. Opt.38, 304 (1999)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.38.000304]. We investigate several typical overhanging gratings by the reformulated C method, and we validate and compare the results with the Fourier modal method, which shows that it is superior, especially for metal deep smooth gratings. This reformulation can facilitate the research in light couplers for optical engineers.
Numerical Stability of the C Method and a Perturbative Preconditioning Technique to Improve Convergence.

Abstract:The translational coordinate transformation method (the C method) in grating theory is studied numerically and analytically. We first study the convergence characteristics of the C method by numerical computations in high floating-point data precisions. Guided by insights gained from this numerical study we analytically studied condition numbers of the most important eigenvalues of the eigenvalue problem of the C method. Asymptotic estimates of condition numbers of these eigenvalues and estimates of convergence rate of the error in satisfying the Helmholtz equation by the eigenvectors are derived. These theoretical results explain well many observed numerical phenomena of the C method. Using the first-order perturbation theory of simple eigenvalues we analyze the effects of round-off errors on eigenvalue distribution and condition numbers. This leads to an extremely simple perturbative preconditioning technique that significantly improves the numerical stability of the C method with as little as just one line of code modification. The performance of the perturbatively preconditioned C method is not inferior to the C method preconditioned by the multilinear parameterization technique. We recommend it as the preferred method for modeling deep and smooth gratings.

Abstract:We present two piecewise linear parameterization schemes for the parameterized coordinate transformation method (the C method) to enable it to model gratings of deep and smooth grooves. This work generalizes and elaborates our previous work [Opt. Lett. 39(23), 6644 (2014)]. The previous bilinear transformation is replaced with a general multi-linear transformation. This gives us flexibility to handle more general grating profiles while retaining the simplicity of the linear transformation. We give some general, simple, and empirical rules on composing the piecewise linear transformation function. Both enlarged convergence range and increased groove depth-to-period ratio, which can be at least 10, are achieved with the parameterized C method for a wide class of smooth grating profiles.

Abstract:We propose a new subdivision technique directly subdividing the grating stripe by using complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) microscopic imaging system combined with image processing. The corresponding optical system, subdivision principle, and image processing methods are illuminated. The relations of systemic resolution to subdivision number, grating period, magnifying power and tilt angle axe theoretically discussed and experimentally checked on the Abbe comparator. The measurement precision for displacement of the proposed subdivision system is tested in the range of 5 mm. and the maximum displacement error is less than 0.4 mu m. The factors contributing to the systemic error are also discussed.

Abstract:I report significant improvements to the differential method of Chandezon et al. [J. Opt. Soc, Am, 72, 839-846 (1982)]. The R-matrix propagation algorithm is used to remove completely the previously existing limitations on the total coating thickness and on the total number of coated layers. I analyze the symmetry properties of the eigenvalue problem that arises in the differential formalism and use them to speed up the numerical computation. The time needed for computing the eigensolutions of coated gratings in a conical mount is reduced to Little more than what is needed for gratings in a classical mount. For gratings with dielectric coatings or gratings with symmetrical profiles the need to invert certain matrices appearing in the formalism is eliminated. Numerical results show that it is possible to make nearly 100% efficient surface-relief reflection gratings in a Littrow mount by the use of dielectric materials only.

Abstract:We recently found that the coordinate transformation method (the C method) equipped with well-established recursive algorithms for solving the system of linear equations is numerically instable when it is applied to thinly coated gratings. The origin of this new kind of numerical instability is not the exponential dependence of the field in the coated layers but the ill condition of the eigenvector matrix of the C method when the truncation number is high. Two simple and effective methods to circumvent the new instability are recommended. We also found that the popular recursive matrix algorithms have different (poor) immunities to the new instability, and they all perform inferiorly to the full matrix (nonrecursive) algorithm.

Abstract:A formulation of the Chandezon method for modeling one-dimensionally periodic, multilayer, inhomogeneous, anisotropic diffraction gratings is presented. The formulation is based on an oblique Cartesian coordinate system so that blazed surface-relief profiles and slanted volume permittivity variations can be treated simultaneously. The permittivity tensors of the anisotropic materials can be arbitrary, but their spatial variations are assumed to have the same period as the surface corrugations. Some of the previous authors' works in the above individual aspects of the subject are improved on in regard to clarity, simplicity, and generality. Most important, the theory of Fourier factorization is applied throughout the analysis to ensure fast convergence of the numerical method when the permittivity tensors or the derivatives of the grating's surface-profile functions have discontinuities. Abstract:The coordinate-transformation-based differential method developed by Chandezon et al. is recognized as one of the simplest and most versatile approaches for modeling surface-relief gratings. In this study, we present a novel numerical solution using Legendre polynomial expansion, enabling us to deal efficiently with faceted gratings. Additionally, we introduce an oblique coordinate transformation to analyze overhanging faceted gratings. Notably, the C-method with polynomial expansion (CPE) demonstrates a dramatic improvement in convergence speed compared to the Fourier Modal Method (FMM).

Abstract:Among the many existing rigorous methods for analyzing diffraction of electromagnetic waves by diffraction gratings, the coupled-wave approach1 stands out because of its versatility and simplicity. It can be applied to volume gratings and surface relief gratings, and its numerical implementation is much simpler than others. In addition, its predictions have been experimentally validated in several cases2-4. These facts explain the popularity of the coupled-wave approach among many optical engineers in the field of diffractive optics. However, a comprehensive analysis of the convergence of the model predictions has never been presented, although several authors5,6 have recently reported convergence difficulties with the model when it is used for metallic gratings in TM polarization.

Abstract:An improved composite Fourier transform profilometry (ICFTP) is proposed through optimizing the composite grating. Compared with the composite Fourier transform profilometry (CFTP), the frequencies of the two sinusoidal images modulated along the orthogonal direction in the optimized composite grating are not equal. The overlapping degree of Fourier spectrum of the optimized grating is lowered. The measuring accuracy is improved because two frequencies are used to calculate phase more accurately. By using a more advantageous flat image extracted ingeniously from the optimized grating, the zero component of the lower frequency sinusoidal image in the Fourier spectrum can be eliminated. So the measuring range is extended the same as that by the π phase shifting technique. Both numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Numerical evidence is presented that shows that, for metallic lamellar gratings in TM polarization, the coupled-wave method formulated by Moharam and Gaylord [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 3, 1780 (1986)] converges slowly. (In some cases, for achieving a relative error of less than 1% in diffraction efficiencies, the number of spatial harmonics retained in the computation must be much greater than 100.) By classification of the modal methods for analyzing diffraction gratings into two distinct categories, the cause for the slow convergence is analyzed and attributed to the use of Fourier expansions to represent the permittivity and the electromagnetic fields in the grating region. The eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the modal fields in the grating region, whose accurate determination is crucial to the success of the coupled-wave method, are shown to converge slowly as a result of the use of these Fourier expansions. Despite its versatility and simplicity, the coupled-wave method should be used with caution for metallic surface-relief gratings in TM polarization.

Abstract:This work reduces the computation cost of the C method by taking into account the symmetries of grating grooves. All one-dimensionally periodic, single-interface, surface-relief gratings are classified into five categories according to the symmetries of the planar periodic curves describing the interface. The five categories are reflection symmetry, inversion symmetry, reflection-translation symmetry, complete symmetry (i.e., simultaneous existence of all three aforementioned symmetries), and no symmetry. Reductions of the eigenvalue problem in the C method are first carried out in real space and then in Fourier space by taking advantage of the four types of symmetries. The reflection-translation symmetry can be used without any restriction on the incident angle, but the other symmetries require a Littrow mounting; simultaneous use of the reflection-translation symmetry with any other symmetry further requires an even-order Littrow mounting. The types of eigenfunctions to be solved and boundary conditions to be matched, as well as the time reduction ratios in solving the eigenvalue problem, are given for all possible combinations of groove symmetries and incident configurations. The time reduction ratios range from 1/4 to 1/64. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A new improved method based on active controlling of phase-shifting is proposed.Five frames of sinusoidal gratings with exactly the same known phase-shifting value are programmed actively.While the five gratings are projected to the measured object one by one,five frames of distorted fringes are captured by CCD camera synchronously.If the known phase-shifting value substitute for the phase-shifting value calculated from distorted fringes in Stoilov's algorithm,the accuracy of the 3D profile reconstruction may be improved obviously.The experiments show that the average Absolute error is less than 0.07,and the mean square error is less than 0.07.
