Abstract:2609 Objectives To systematically study the effect of Time of Flight (TOF) and Point Spread Function (PSF) reconstruction algorithms on the image quality of integrated PET/MR. Methods All phantom measurements were performed on an integrated PET/MR (GE SIGNA PET/MR and AW4.6 workstation). The NEMA IQ phantom was filled with water and a total activity of 4.14mCi (1.53×108Bq) of 18F-FDG. The sphere-to-background activity concentration ratio was 4:1. The phantom was kept aside for 260 minutes before scan. At the beginning of scan, the activity concentration of the 4 hot spheres was 0.32μCi/cc (1.18×104Bq/ml). Multiple PET data blocks were acquired in LIST MODEL and the scan time was 11 minutes. MRAC was used for attenuation correction. The respective PET images were reconstructed with the following parameters: sinogram of 11 min in duration, 28 subsets, 192×192 image matrix size. Different reconstruction algorithms (TOF + PSF,non TOF + PSF,TOF + non PSF and non TOF + non PSF) were used. And different iterations (2, 3, and 4) were used for TOF + PSF algorithm to study its effect on image quality. The obtained PET images were quantitatively evaluated following the NEMA IQ protocol, investigating contrast recovery (CR), background variability (BV), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of hot spheres, and the residual error in attenuation and scatter corrections. Results By visual judgments, there was hot artifact in the lung area of the phantom images reconstructed by non TOF. TOF eliminates this hot artifact significantly. For reconstruction algorithms quantitative evaluation, the results of non TOF + non PSF were used as reference. CR of hot spheres increased 20.94% when TOF was used alone, 7.61% when PSF was used alone, and 40.17% when TOF and PSF were used in combination. CR of cold spheres increased 11.29% with TOF alone and 12.32% with TOF + PSF. PSF alone almost did not affect the CR of cold spheres. The average residual error in attenuation and scatter corrections decreased 91.90% with TOF. The average BV for hot spheres decreased 16.20% with TOF alone, 3.44% with PSF alone, and 27.19% with TOF + PSF. The average BV for cold spheres decreased 31.90% with TOF alone and 35.70% with TOF + PSF. The SNR increased 44.28% with TOF alone, 11.52% with PSF alone, and 92.70% with TOF + PSF. For number of iterations evaluation, images were reconstructed by TOF + PSF. The average CR and the average BV of spheres increased with increasing iterations. The average residual error in attenuation and scatter corrections decreased with decreasing iterations. The SNR decreased with increasing iterations. Conclusions The phantom study results show that TOF eliminates hot artifact in lung area significantly. This conclusion reminds valid in patient images. Both TOF and PSF can improve the overall image quality, especially when they are used in combination. TOF has been the essential technique for eliminating interference between PET and MRI, achieving synchronous scan, and improving the PET image quality.
