Abstract:The Pt-Cu alloy/C (AC-PtCu-4/C) with uniform nanoparticles and high density of surface defects was synthesized by the microwave-polyol technique following acid-treatment. The AC-PtCu-4/C contained much higher density of surface defects than did the commercial Pt/C. Electrochemical characterization demonstrated that the AC-PtCu-41C exhibited mass activity and surface activity 4.8 and 3.9 times higher than those of Pt/C for ethanol oxidation. Moreover, the AC-PtCu-4/C can enhance the C-C bond cleavage of ethanol to generate CO2 2.47 times more than that of Pt/C under the same conditions, as evidenced by in situ FTIR reflection spectroscopy. Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of multimetallic nanostructures (NSs) with rich defects are of significant importance for their diverse applications, including their promising usage as high-efficiency catalysts for alcohol oxidation reaction as a fuel source. Here, we report the synthesis of defect-rich, candied haws-shaped AuPtNi NSs using presynthesized gold (Au) nanowires as templates. The ternary AuPtNi NSs possess rich defects such as twins, stacking faults, and atomic steps. Impressively, the AuPtNi NSs exhibited excellent mass and specific activities toward methanol and ethanol oxidation reactions under acidic conditions. Our current work paves the way for the rational design and controlled synthesis of defect-rich multimetallic NSs to boost their performances in catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Constructing an appealing architecture is of great significance to improving the electrocatalytic activity and stability of Pt-based nanocatalysts. In this work, we successfully synthesized porous Pd@PdPt core/shell nanocrystals via a facile one-pot method, which possess several architectural and compositional advantages, involving porous outer, ultrathin branches, an open mesoporous skeleton, a core/shell structure, and an alloyed composition. These morphological features and the synergistic effect between different components in the alloy endow the Pd@PdPt nanostructures with abundant active sites, effective mass transfer, strain in the particle, and the electronic coupling effect. The Pd@PdPt nanoalloy therefore exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performances in alcohol oxidation reactions. Impressively, the Pd5Pt4 nanocubes exhibit a higher mass/specific activity of 3.225 A mgPt+Pd –1/34.49 A m–2 for the ethanol oxidation reaction, which is even 4.00-/2.39-fold as high as that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the Pd5Pt4 nanocubes also show a superior mass activity of 2.824 A mgPt+Pd –1/37.66 A m–2 toward the methanol oxidation reaction, which is up to 4.20/2.40 times that of the commercial Pt/C. The Pd@PdPt also has enhanced electrocatalytic stability. More importantly, the porous Pt5Pd4 nanocubes still demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activities of 0.259, 1.19, 2.65, and 2.76 A mgPt+Pd –1 for the oxidation of glucose, isopropyl alcohol, glycerol, and ethylene glycol, respectively. We therefore believe that these universal electrocatalysts have the potential to promote practical applications in fuel cells.

Abstract:Abundant surface structural defects can endow electrocatalysts with extraordinary physical and chemical characteristics. Herein, metastable Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with abundant twin boundaries (TBs) and atomic steps (ASs) anchored on a carbon substrate (TS-Pd/C) are directly synthesized by a solid-state thermal shock (TS) strategy. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that the transient super cooling procedure after the TS synthesis can boost the formation of TBs. Benefitting from the abundant TBs and ASs, these metastable Pd NPs can serve as an advanced electrocatalyst for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) with superior reactivity, stability, and CO tolerance in alkaline solutions, which far exceeds that of commercial Pd/C. The first-principles calculations suggest that the defect structure dominated by TBs can achieve the spatial separation of the optimal adsorption sites for CO and OH. The CO can concentrate at optimal surface sites to minimize the number of poisoned active sites. The strong adsorption of OH can accelerate the EOR process and jointly promote the improvement of electrocatalytic reactivity.

Abstract:Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes enclosed by high-index facets were synthesized in ethylene glycol (EG) containing H2PtCl6 and Na2PdCl4 with ascorbic acid (AA) and KBr as reducing and capping agents, respectively. We found that the combination of bromide-induced galvanic replacement and co-reduction was responsible for the formation of these alloy concave nanocubes. The composition of the Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes was also tuned by varying the molar ratio of Pd to Pt salt precursors fed in the reaction. In addition, the variation in composition had a great impact on the rate of galvanic replacement, and thus the concave content of such alloy nanocrystals. These Pd-Pt alloy concave nanocubes showed composition-dependent catalytic activity for methanol oxidation, with Pd40Pt60-based catalysts exhibiting the highest activity. Compared to the commercial Pt/C, the Pd40Pt60 alloy concave nanocubes showed much improved tolerance toward CO poisoning, together with 4.6 times enhancement in specific activity for methanol oxidation due to possible synergetic effects between Pd and Pt and the unique surface structure associated with high-index facets.

Abstract:Pt-based nanomaterials have been proven to be effective catalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Specifically, the ternary nanoalloys (NAs) composed of Pt with other noble metals and transition metals can not only reduce the component of Pt but also enhance the electrocatalytic property and durability for alcohol oxidation. Herein, ternary PdPtCu NAs were synthesized through the solvothermal method using ethylene glycol as the solvent and reducing agent. The morphology and composition of PdPtCu NAs can be effectively controlled via selecting suitable surfactants and adjusting the proportion of precursors. The three-dimensional (3D) PdPtCu NAs with spiny rambutan-like morphology were obtained using the triblock copolymer Pluronic F-127 (PF-127) as the surfactant and adding three precursors with an equal molar ratio. The unique structure of PdPtCu NAs and the synergistic effect between the components significantly improved the electrocatalytic activity toward ethanol oxidation. Compared with different atomic ratio binary or ternary nanomaterials, 3D PdPtCu NAs manifested the best electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Controlled construction of bimetallic nanostructures with a well-defined heterophase is of great significance for developing highly efficient nanocatalysts and investigating the structure-dependent catalytic performance. Here, a wet-chemical synthesis method is used to prepare Au@Pd core-shell nanorods with a unique fcc-2H-fcc heterophase (fcc: face-centered cubic; 2H: hexagonal close-packed with a stacking sequence of "AB"). The obtained fcc-2H-fcc heterophase Au@Pd core-shell nanorods exhibit superior electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation performance with a mass activity as high as 6.82 A mgPd-1, which is 2.44, 6.96, and 6.43 times those of 2H-Pd nanoparticles, fcc-Pd nanoparticles, and commercial Pd/C, respectively. The operando infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy reveals a C2 pathway with fast reaction kinetics for the ethanol oxidation on the prepared heterophase Au@Pd nanorods. Our experimental results together with density functional theory calculations indicate that the enhanced performance of heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can be attributed to the unconventional 2H phase, the 2H/fcc phase boundary, and the lattice expansion of the Pd shell. Moreover, the heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can also serve as an efficient catalyst for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol. Our work in the area of phase engineering of nanomaterials (PENs) opens the way for developing high-performance electrocatalysts toward future practical applications.

Abstract:Tuning the chemical composition and surface structure of electrodes is demonstrated as a feasible and effective strategy to tailor advanced catalysts for energy electrocatalysis. In this work, hierarchical palladium-silver alloy nanosheets (PdAg NS) with the thickness ~7 atoms and rich atomic defects are successfully prepared, using the carbon monoxide (CO) confinement approach. The optimized Pd7Ag3 NS/C exhibits 8.8 times higher catalytic peak current density and much better stability toward ethanol electrooxidation than Pd NS/C catalyst. The catalytic enhancement mechanism could be attributed to the synergetic effects among optimized electronic structure of Pd, novel architecture, and rich atomic defects.

Abstract:Low-dimensional noble-metal materials (LDNMs) with different structural advantages have been considered as the high-performance catalysts for C2 alcohol electrooxidation. However, it is still a great challenging to precisely construct nanomaterials with low-dimensional composite structure thus to take advantages of various dimension, especial without the surfactant participation. Most studies focus on the modulation of the single dimensional nanocatalysts, the correlation between electrocatalytic performances and low-dimension composite have been rarely reported. Herein, we engineered a simple one-step approach to design multi-low-dimensional PdPt nanomaterials by using different Pd precursors. The low-dimensional PdPt nanocrystals (NCs) composed of zero dimension (0D) dendrite-like nanoparticles and two dimension (2D) nanosheets were obtained by using Pd(OAc)2, and meanwhile the 2D PdPt nanosheet assemblies (NAs) were synthesized by the introduction of NaPdCl4. Specifically, benefitting from the unique low-dimension structures with fast electron/mass transfer, and optimized electronic and synergistic effect, the multi-low-dimensional 0D-2D PdPt NCs showed the highest ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR)/ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) mass activities, which were much higher than 2D PdPt NAs. The 0D-2D PdPt NCs also exhibited the highest structural stability. Generally, this work could inspire more advanced designs for surfactant-free synthesis and promote the fundamental engineering on nanocatalysts with low-dimension composite structure for electrocatalytic fields.

Abstract:Hollow alloyed nanoparticles (NPs) represent one kind of promising fuel cell electrocatalyst. However, the formation of single-cavity hollow structures by a dealloying process is quite challenging owing to the random leaching/dissolution of transition metals, surface passivation and the limited diffusion distance of the noble metals. Here we present a facile method to prepare hollow PtPdCu NPs derived from monodisperse alloy NPs by an acetic acid-assisted dealloying process. Here, acetic acid not only acts as a chemical etching agent but also plays an important role in the removal of the residual surfactants for colloidal NPs. Our findings rectify the current knowledge that hollow alloyed NPs cannot be prepared by a dealloying strategy and provide further understanding of the dealloying process in a ternary system. Such unique hollow ternary PtPdCu NPs exhibit outstanding durability and improved catalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction.
Au/Pt Bimetallic Nanowires with Stepped Pt Sites for Enhanced C-C Cleavage in C2+ Alcohol Electro-oxidation Reactions

Abstract:Efficient C-C bond cleavage and oxidation of alcohols to CO2 is the key to developing highly efficient alcohol fuel cells for renewable energy applications. In this work, we report the synthesis of core/shell Au/Pt nanowires (NWs) with stepped Pt clusters deposited along the ultrathin (2.3 nm) stepped Au NWs as an active catalyst to effectively oxidize alcohols to CO2. The catalytic oxidation reaction is dependent on the Au/Pt ratios, and the Au1.0/Pt0.2 NWs have the largest percentage (∼75%) of stepped Au/Pt sites and show the highest activity for ethanol electro-oxidation, reaching an unprecedented 196.9 A/mgPt (32.5 A/mgPt+Au). This NW catalyst is also active in catalyzing the oxidation of other primary alcohols, such as methanol, n-propanol, and ethylene glycol. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy are used to characterize the catalyst structure and to identify key reaction intermediates, providing concrete evidence that the synergy between the low-coordinated Pt sites and the stepped Au NWs is essential to catalyze the alcohol oxidation reaction, which is further supported by DFT calculations that the C-C bond cleavage is indeed enhanced on the undercoordinated Pt-Au surface. Our study provides important evidence that a core/shell structure with stepped core/shell sites is essential to enhance electrochemical oxidation of alcohols and will also be central to understanding electro-oxidation reactions and to the future development of highly efficient direct alcohol fuel cells for renewable energy applications.

Abstract:The development of ultrathin porous nanostructures contributes a new opportunity to optimize the activity and stability of electrocatalysts, especially for those complicated alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs). Herein, a series of porous PdPtNi nanosheets with adjustable compositions were designed and synthesized to achieve highly active and stable electrocatalysis towards methanol and ethanol oxidation reactions (MOR and EOR) in alkaline electrolyte containing the corresponding alcohol molecules. Benefited from the ultrathin structures, abundant step atoms and optimized electronic structures, the optimized Pd 45 Pt 42 Ni 13 /C exhibits the mass and specific activities of 16.2 A mg PGM −1 and 12.7 mA cm −2 , respectively, much higher than those of commercial Pt/C and PdPt-based catalysts. In addition, the Pd 45 Pt 42 Ni 13 /C also displays desirable stability with the highest retained current density after long-term durability tests. We also demonstrate that the porous PdPtNi nanosheets can serve as high-efficiency electrocatalysts towards EOR, confirming the versatility of improved electrocatalytic performance of AORs with multi-electron transfer. By maximizing the number of electrocatalytically active sites and enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity of single sites, this work provides a class of high-performance Pt-based anodic catalyst for DAFCs via introducing porosity into ultrathin Pt- or Pd-based nanostructures.

Abstract:Pt-based multi-metallic electrocatalysts containing hetero-junctions are found to have superior catalytic performance to composition-equivalent counterparts. However, in bulk solution, controllable preparation of Pt-based hetero-junction electrocatalyst is an extremely random work owing to the complexity of solution reactions. Herein, we develop an interface-confined transformation strategy, subtly achieving Au/PtTe hetero-junction-abundant nanostructures by employing interfacial Te nanowires as sacrificing templates. By controlling the reaction conditions, composition-varied Au/PtTe can be easily obtained, such as Au 75 /Pt 20 Te 5 , Au 55 /Pt 34 Te 11 , and Au 5 /Pt 69 Te 26 . Moreover, each Au/PtTe hetero-junction nanostructure appears to be an array consisting of side-by-side Au/PtTe nanotrough units and can be directly used as a catalyst layer without further post-treatment. All Au/PtTe hetero-junction nanostructures show better catalytic activity towards ethanol electrooxidation than commercial Pt/C because of the combining contributions of Au/Pt hetero-junctions and the collective effects of multi-metallic elements, where Au 75 /Pt 20 Te 5 exhibits the best electrocatalytic performance among three Au/PtTe nanostructures owing to its optimal composition. This study may provide technically feasible guidance for further maximizing the catalytic activity of Pt-based hybrid catalysts.

Abstract:Optimization of the morphology and composition of noble metal architectures is essential to construct cathode electrocatalyst for fuel cells with high catalytic activity. Ultrathin nanowires with unique physical and chemical properties have attracted increasing research interest for a broad range of applications in electrochemical catalysis. Here, we report a simple preparation method of ultrafine alloy AuPd nanowires (AuPd NWs) with Boerdijk–Coxeter structure within 2 min for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M KOH. The AuPd NWs have numerous exposed surface atoms and abundant structural defects that act as catalytic active sites, effectively enhanced ORR kinetics and charge transfer. Compared with AuPd nanoparticles and Pt/C catalysts, the constructed AuPd NWs exhibit excellent electrochemical ORR activity and stability. This work provides a feasible and novel strategy for the design and construction of defect-rich ultrafine bimetallic nanowires toward promising electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Using ultrathin, high aspect ratio Te nanowires as a template, we demonstrated a facile method to synthesize high-quality AuPtPd trimetallic alloy nanowires in aqueous solution at room temperature within one hour. More importantly, the obtained AuPtPd trimetallic alloy nanowires exhibited significantly enhanced activity towards ethanol electrooxidation in alkaline medium, demonstrating the potential of applying these Pd-based alloy nanowires as effective electrocatalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells. Considering the important role of one-dimensional trimetallic alloy nanostructures in catalytic systems, the present AuPtPd alloy nanowires may also find applications in other fields, such as fuel cells (formic acid, methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reaction) and electrochemical biosensors.

We provide herein the first selective synthesis of narrowly sized small (21 nm) Au@Pd concave nanocubes enclosed with high-index Pd facets by deposition of Pd atoms on truncated-octahedral Au seeds. Moreover, further controlled deposition of Pt onto these Au@Pd concave nanocubes produces sub-30 nm trimetallic Pt-on-(Au@Pd) nanostructures having jagged Pt-rich surfaces. The as-prepared Au@Pd and Pt-on-(Au@Pd) nanostructures are found highly active and fairly stable when employed as anode catalysts for ethanol electrooxidation, their activity normalized to the mass of Pd or Pd plus Pt being 7-9 times higher than conventional Pd black catalyst. These data may echo the importance of innovative small multimetallic nanostructures for highly efficient catalysts that depend critically on use of precious metals, for applications in energy, environmental, and chemical technologies.

Abstract:Tuning the composition and surface structure of the metal nanocrystals offered viable avenues for enhancing catalytic performances. Herein, we report a facile one-pot strategy for the formation of PdAg porous alloy nanostructures (PANs) with a concave surface. Due to their highly open nanostructures and tunable d-band center features, PdAg PANs exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability than Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and Pd/C for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media. Our results provide a feasible and efficient approach for the controlled synthesis of high-performance Pd-based nanomaterials for alkaline MOR.

Abstract:In this paper, porous flowerlike Pt-based (Pt, PdPt, RhPt and RhPdPt) nanocrystals were successfully achieved by a simple, economic, environmentally friendly route under the same synthetic conditions at 85 °C. The electrocatalytic properties of these flowerlike Pt-based nanocrystals toward alcohols (glycol, glycerol, methanol and ethanol) oxidation were investigated and they displayed enhanced catalytic performance compared with commercial Pt black. Among them, porous Pd45.5Pt54.5 nanoflowers showed the best catalytic performance with significant mass activity and long-term stability. More importantly, the current synthesis strategy can be easily amplified to gram-scale production.
