Abstract:In this article, large Au@Pd core-porous shell nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters of between 20 and 60 nm were synthesized by the seed-mediated growth method. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, used as a surfactant and structure-directing agent, plays an important role in determining the morphology and nanoporous shell structure of Au@Pd core-porous shell NPs. The resulting size of the Au@Pd core-porous shell NPs can be readily tuned by varying the volume of the Au seeds. The Au@Pd core-porous shell NPs were further characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometry. An ultrathin layer of PdO/PdO2 is formed on the surface of the porous Pd shell, which has a significant effect on the electrochemical properties. The electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation performances of Au@Pd core-porous shell NPs of different sizes were subsequently investigated. The observed volcano-shaped trend in the high electrocatalytic activity is linked to the nanoporous structure of the Pd/PdOx shell. The current research will further promote Pd-based nanocatlyst applications in direct-ethanol fuel cells.

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Lattice engineering on specific facets of metal catalysts is critically important not only for the enhancement of their catalytic performance but also for deeply understanding the effect of facet-based lattice engineering on catalytic reactions. Here, we develop a facile two-step method for the lattice expansion on specific facets, i.e., Pt(100) and Pt(111), of Pt catalysts. We first prepare the core–shell nanoparticles exposed with the Pt(100) and Pt(111) facets, respectively, via the Pd-seeded epitaxial growth, and then convert the Pd core to PdH0.43 by hydrogen intercalation. The lattice expansion of the Pd core induces the lattice enlargement of the Pt shell, which can significantly promote the alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) on both Pt(100) and Pt(111) facets. Impressively, Pt mass specific activities of 32.51 A mgPt–1 for methanol oxidation and 14.86 A mgPt–1 for ethanol oxidation, which are 41.15 and 25.19 times those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, respectively, have been achieved on the Pt(111) facet. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the remarkably improved catalytic performance on both the Pt(100) and the Pt(111) facets through lattice expansion arises from the enhanced OH adsorption. Abstract:Combining core-shell construction with an alloying effect is effective for optimizing the electronic and lattice strain effects for achieving highly catalytic efficiency for a given electrochemical reaction. Here, we report the use of core-shell Au@FePd nanoparticles with an Au core and a sub-nano FePd alloy shell to demonstrate this concept. The Au core modifies the electronic configuration of Pd atoms, while the Fe component in thin shells reduces the lattice expansion of Pd induced by the Au core, both of which endow the Pd shell with an appropriate d-band center, favorable for the electrooxidation of ethanol through the C-1 pathway. In particular, the as-prepared core-shell Au@FePd nanoparticles at an optimized Fe:Pd ratio exhibit a mass activity of 13.3 A mg(-1) and a specific activity of 20.2 mA cm(-2) for the ethanol electrooxidation in an alkaline medium, which outperform those of a majority of the recently reported Pd-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Combining the core-shell structure with the optimization of surface composition and structure in the shell is a fantastic strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performances. Here, we synthesized trimetallic Au@PtxSny core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition and structure of Pt-Sn alloyed shells. Impressively, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs with hexagonal PtSn alloyed shells exhibited the highest mass activity and specific activity toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline electrolyte, which are 13.0 and 12.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs displayed the best stability compared to commercial Pt/C, with only 44.8% loss vs. 86.8% loss in mass activity after 1,000 s due to the stronger anti-poisoning ability for reaction intermediates. The theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Au core and alloying Pt with Sn both endow Pt with an appropriate d-band center, and thus effectively boosting the EOR activity.

Abstract:Controlled construction of bimetallic nanostructures with a well-defined heterophase is of great significance for developing highly efficient nanocatalysts and investigating the structure-dependent catalytic performance. Here, a wet-chemical synthesis method is used to prepare Au@Pd core-shell nanorods with a unique fcc-2H-fcc heterophase (fcc: face-centered cubic; 2H: hexagonal close-packed with a stacking sequence of "AB"). The obtained fcc-2H-fcc heterophase Au@Pd core-shell nanorods exhibit superior electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation performance with a mass activity as high as 6.82 A mgPd-1, which is 2.44, 6.96, and 6.43 times those of 2H-Pd nanoparticles, fcc-Pd nanoparticles, and commercial Pd/C, respectively. The operando infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy reveals a C2 pathway with fast reaction kinetics for the ethanol oxidation on the prepared heterophase Au@Pd nanorods. Our experimental results together with density functional theory calculations indicate that the enhanced performance of heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can be attributed to the unconventional 2H phase, the 2H/fcc phase boundary, and the lattice expansion of the Pd shell. Moreover, the heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can also serve as an efficient catalyst for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol. Our work in the area of phase engineering of nanomaterials (PENs) opens the way for developing high-performance electrocatalysts toward future practical applications.

Abstract:Geometric structure and chemical composition are two critical factors that determine the electronic properties of an active metal favorable for a given catalytic reaction. In this scenario, we develop a wet-chemistry method to construct core–shell nanoentities consisting of a CuPd alloy core and a NiPd alloy shell, termed as CuPd@NiPd, which involves the synthesis of CuNi alloy seeds, and a subsequent galvanic replacement reaction with Pd2+ precursors in an organic medium at elevated temperature. In these unique core–shell nanostructures, the compressive lattice strain between core and shell regions and the electronic interaction between Pd and transitional elements could be coupled together to lead to a downshift of the d-band center of Pd sites, thus endowing them with good activity for catalyzing ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In particular, at an appropriate Pd/Cu precursor ratio of 1/1, the as-prepared core–shell CuPd@NiPd nanoparticles exhibit a mass activity of 5.1 A mg–1 for EOR and a half-wave potential of 0.91 V for ORR at room temperature in an alkaline medium, outperforming alloy CuPd, NiPd counterparts, commercial Pd/C, and the vast majority of recently reported Pd-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Pd is a highly active non-Pt anode in direct ethanol fuel cells, and its morphology and structural composition heavily influence its electrocatalytic efficiency. In this study, three-dimensional (3D)-hollow Au microspheres (HNPs-Au) as a support for the Pd monolayer () were synthesized using a simple template method and galvanic replacement reaction. The experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the presence of HNPs-Au enhances the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in alkaline media, improving the electroactivity of metallic Pd. Benefiting from the 3D-hollow-porous structure and the significant synergistic impact between Au and Pd (balancing the adsorption energy of the intermediate and reactant molecules), achieves a 10.8-fold mass activity and a 3.3-fold enhancement of the specific activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction when compared to commercial Pd/C. Abstract:Resemblin, g core-shell electrocatalysts consisting of a Au core and Pd shell (Au@Pd) are synthesized via a Cu underpotential deposition (UPD)-Pd-displacement method. The Pd shell is non-uniform consisting of tiny Pd clusters with a coverage of 0.5–0.6. The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity of this kind of structure is much higher than Pd/C in an alkaline solution. The forward peak current density of Au@Pd is 5.4 times higher than that of Pd/C. Furthermore, the onset potential for EOR of the former is ∼100 mV more negative. An interesting particle size dependent EOR activity is also observed. With increasing the Au particle size (2.9, 5.8 and 6.5 nm), the EOR activity increases. The strain and ligand effects from the Au core, together with the bifunctional reaction mechanism in the Au–Pd system may be reasons for the enhanced activity in Au@Pd catalysts.

Abstract:Phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) offers a promising route to rationally tune the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials and further enhance their performance in various applications. However, it remains a great challenge to construct well‐defined crystalline@amorphous core–shell heterostructured nanomaterials with the same chemical components. Herein, the synthesis of binary (Pd‐P) crystalline@amorphous heterostructured nanoplates using Cu3−χP nanoplates as templates, via cation exchange, is reported. The obtained nanoplate possesses a crystalline core and an amorphous shell with the same elemental components, referred to as c‐Pd‐P@a‐Pd‐P. Moreover, the obtained c‐Pd‐P@a‐Pd‐P nanoplates can serve as templates to be further alloyed with Ni, forming ternary (Pd‐Ni‐P) crystalline@amorphous heterostructured nanoplates, referred to as c‐Pd‐Ni‐P@a‐Pd‐Ni‐P. The atomic content of Ni in the c‐Pd‐Ni‐P@a‐Pd‐Ni‐P nanoplates can be tuned in the range from 9.47 to 38.61 at%. When used as a catalyst, the c‐Pd‐Ni‐P@a‐Pd‐Ni‐P nanoplates with 9.47 at% Ni exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity toward ethanol oxidation, showing a high mass current density up to 3.05 A mgPd−1, which is 4.5 times that of the commercial Pd/C catalyst (0.68 A mgPd−1).

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of ternary Au@PdNi core-shell nanoparticles (C-SNPs). Au NPs with 15 nm in diameter served as seeds, Pd2+ and Ni2+ were co-reduced on the surface of Au NPs to obtain C-SNPs. These C-SNPs exhibited outstanding catalytic performance (5891 mA mg(Pd)(-1)) and stability for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The activity was 9.48 times higher than the commercial Pd/C (20% wt). The catalytic mechanism was investigated, and the enhanced catalytic performance of Au@PdNi C-SNPs was mainly attributed to electronic effects between Pd and Au/Ni, and the unique core-shell nanostructure. Abstract:The electrocatalytic performance of the noble metal-based nanocatalysts greatly depends on the structure/morphology and composition, which can be precisely tailored by the control over synthetic parameters. In this study, a simple one-step fabrication of hierarchically trimetallic core-shell Au@PdAuCu mesoporous nanospheres (MNSs) was realized via the successive reduction and growth of metal nanocrystals on an assembled surfactant template of dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) in an aqueous solution. Through the change of Au precursor added, core-shell Au@PdAuCu MNSs with tailored core sizes and shell compositions and cylindrically opened mesochannels were obtained. Owing to the synergistically structural and compositional advantages, the resulting trimetallic core-shell Au@PdAuCu MNSs exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability toward the ethanol oxidation reaction in an alkaline condition, comparable to the mesoporous multimetallic counterparts or commercial Pd nanoparticles. Our successful synthesis of multimetallic core-shell mesoporous nanocrystals thus provides a new avenue for the construction of complex nanoarchitectures for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Direct and complete electro-oxidation of ethanol to CO2 is highly desirable for the commercialization of the direct ethanol fuel cells but is challenging. Current electrocatalysts (mainly Pt, Pd) for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), unfortunately, still suffer from low CO2 selectivity and rapid performance deterioration. In this study, a new Pt/alpha-PtOx/WO3 electrocatalyst containing amorphous PtOx structures is successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction following Ar atmosphere annealing. The migration of lattice oxygens in the WO3 during the annealing process is confirmed as the mechanism for the formation and manipulation of amorphous interfaces containing PtOx species in the Pt/alpha-PtOx/WO3 electrocatalyst. The obtained Pt/alpha-PtOx/WO3 with tunable amorphous PtOx interfaces favors the desorption of poisoning EOR intermediates (such as CO) and high CO2 selectivity. Therefore, the state-of-art of the Pt/alpha-PtOx/WO3 exhibits excellent EOR activity (2.76 A mg(-1)), stability (47.99% of the initial activity preserved after 3600 s), and particularly high CO2 selectivity (reached 21.9%, higher than most reported values for Pt or other noble metals based EOR catalysts). This study may provide a new strategy to improve the EOR performance of metal-based catalysts and to rationally design and prepare other high-performing electrocatalysts via engineering the amorphous interfaces.
Laser-assisted Synthesis of PtPd Alloy for Efficient Ethanol Oxidation

Abstract:The inefficiency of ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) presents a significant obstacle in harnessing renewable biofuels with high energy density into electricity. Despite efforts, most Pt-based catalysts still suffer from drawbacks such as poor activity and susceptibility to CO poisoning, particularly in acidic conditions. Herein, we employed a physical laser-assisted approach to synthetize a PtPd alloy with a 1:1 atomic ratio. This alloy demonstrates remarkable performance in acidic EOR, boasting a high mass activity of 1.86 A·mgPt−1 and competitive resistance to poisoning. Combining in situ synchrotron radiation infrared spectroscopy with theoretical calculations, we reveal that the synergic interaction between Pt and Pd enhances both the adsorption of OH* intermediate and the dehydrogenation ability of ethanol. This work will prove the feasibility of synthesizing bimetallic alloys by a physical laser-assisted strategy and promote the development of advanced alloy electrocatalysts.
High-Yield Synthesis of Crystal-Phase-Heterostructured 4h/fcc Au@Pd Core-Shell Nanorods for Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Abstract:Noble-metal nanomaterials are attracting increasing research interest due to their promising applications in electrochemical catalysis, for example. Although great efforts have been devoted to the size-, shape-, and architecture-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanomaterials, their crystal-phase-controlled synthesis is still in its infancy. Here, for the first time, this study reports high-yield synthesis of Au nanorods (NRs) with alternating 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal-phase heterostructures via a one-pot wet-chemical method. The coexistence of 4H and fcc phases is relatively stable, and the 4H/fcc Au NRs can serve as templates for crystal-phase-controlled epitaxial growth of other metals. As an example, bimetallic 4H/fcc Au@Pd core-shell NRs are synthesized via the epitaxial growth of Pd on 4H/fcc Au NRs. Significantly, the 4H/fcc Au@Pd NRs show superior mass activity toward the ethanol oxidation reaction, i.e., 6.2 and 4.9 times those of commercial Pd black and Pt/C catalysts, respectively. It is believed that this new synthetic strategy can be used to prepare other novel catalysts for various promising applications.
Hierarchical AgAu Alloy Nanostructures for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Abstract:The ethanol oxidation reaction is a significant anodic reaction for direct alcohol fuel cells. The most commonly used catalysts for this reaction are Pt-based materials; however, Pt-based electrocatalysts cause carbon monoxide poisoning with intermediates before the complete transformation of alcohol to CO2. Herein, we present hierarchical AgAu bimetallic nanoarchitectures for ethanol electrooxidation, which were fabricated via a partial galvanic reduction reaction between Ag and HAuCl4. The ethanol electrooxidation performance of the optimal AgAu nanohybrid was increased to 1834 mA mg−1, which is almost 10 times higher than that of the pristine Au catalyst (190 mA mg−1) in alkaline solutions. This was achieved by introducing Ag into the Au catalyst and controlling the time of the replacement reaction. The heterostructure also presents a higher current density than that of commercial Pt/C (1574 mA mg−1). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the enhanced activity and stability may stem from unavoidable defects on the surface of the integrated AgAu nanoarchitectures. Ethanol oxidation reactions over these defects are more energetically favorable, which facilitates the oxidative removal of carbonaceous poison and boosts the combination with radicals on adjacent Au active sites.
