Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.

Abstract:The reaction-induced phase separation process of polyethersulfone- and polyetherimide-modified (PES- and PEI-modified) epoxy systems was investigated by using transmission electronic microscopes (TEM) and a rheometry instrument. The morphologies of cured blends alter considerably with the PES content and molecular weight at the same content of total thermoplastics. Compared with the PEI-modified systems, many complex phase separation mechanisms are observed due to the introduction of PES, but similar relationships between melt viscosity change behaviors and morphology developments are observed in the PES-added ternary systems. Dynamic mechanical analysis (dma) and mechanical studies show that neither heat resistance nor toughness of the resultant blends is obviously influenced by the addition of PES.

Abstract:In this work, we perform a series of tests to characterize the mechanical properties of polystyrene foam (EPS), including uniaxial compression tests, uniaxial tension tests and three point bending tests. EPS exhibits a ductile to brittle transition when the loading mode changes from compression to tension. The elastic modulus in tension is nearly one order larger than that measured in compression. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique is used to measure the strain distribution. A homogenous deformation can be observed in uniaxial deformation tests, where EPS exhibits a near-zero Poisson's ratio. For the three point bending tests, DIC can capture the strain localization behavior of specimens with a prefabricated crack. Based on the experimental observations, a simple phenomenological model is developed and further implemented for finite element analysis. The simulation results show reasonable agreement with experimentally measured strain distribution in the bending tests.

Abstract:Polymer films must be thermally stable and mechanically strong to operate durably under extreme conditions (e.g., high temperature and tension). Herein we report the preparation of mesoporous films from poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ether imide)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP-b-PEI-b-P4VP) triblock copolymers. Owing to the high-performance engineering plastic PEI block, the mesoporous films are thermally stable up to 150 degrees C and show much higher mechanical strength than existing polystyrene-based films. Importantly, with a molecular weight of 27.7 kDa, the porous block copolymer films showed a tensile strength at break of 10.5 MPa and toughness of 0.68 MPa. The P4VP-b-PEI-b-P4VP films had predominant mesopores of tunable sizes and high specific surface areas, better than the commercial poly(ether sulfone) and polyamide films. The development of poly(ether imide)-based porous films provides an effective method for preparing thermally stable and mechanically strong membranes for extreme-condition operations.

Abstract:The elastic properties of a fully aromatic polyimide were measured for the first time by Brillouin scattering in a high-pressure diamond anvil cell. Its isothermal compressibility and pressure dependence of mechanical moduli (K-s, E, and G) were studied and determined up to 6.4 GPa. Further, piezochromic behavior of the polyimide film was observed and studied in detail by spectroscopic analysis. Pressure-induced red shift of the absorption edge and a hysteretic phenomenon were found, due to an enhancement of the van der Waals interaction upon decreasing the interchain distances and partially collapsing the free volume under extreme pressure. A comprehensive study of elastic properties and piezochromism behavior of polyimide film under high pressure will provide useful information for developing pressure sensitive coatings, pressure sensors, pressure resistance parts and components. Abstract:Simultaneous measurements of microscopic infrared (MiGIR) dichroism, mesoscale deformation, and macroscopic stress during uniaxial stretching are made to four microphase-separated poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) films quenched form melt. Before the onset of microstructural alterations, poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) blocks in soft domains undergo affine deformation, and the true stress-strain relationship on the mesoscale of 500 mum can be described using an interpenetrating network model combining the Matsuoka viscoelastic constitutive equation and the affine deformation equation for mechanically hard and soft networks, respectively. Beyond a threshold strain at which PTMO blocks in the soft network are fully extended, plastic deformation occurs in the hard domain composed of polyamide-12 (PA), which is accompanied by depression of the true stress toward values lower than the prediction of the interpenetrating network model and also by deviation of the molecular orientation of PTMO blocks in the soft domain from the affine deformation mode. The deformation in the hard domain is characterized by a three-stage molecular orientation of hard PA blocks being present in either a fibrillar or a lamellar form. Alignment of PTMO blocks along the draw axis is predominantly observed for the sample with the lowest PA fraction, followed by rotation of the lamellae and then by the plastic deformation leading to fibrillation at high strains.
Study of Elastic Modulus and Yield Strength of Polymer Thin Films Using Atomic Force Microscopy

Abstract:Nanometer-scale elastic moduli and yield strengths of polycarbonate (PC) and polystyrene (PS) thin films were measured with atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation measurements. By analysis of the AFM indentation force curves with the method by Oliver and Pharr, Young's moduli of PC and PS thin films could be obtained as 2.2 ± 0.1 and 2.6 ± 0.1 GPa, respectively, which agree well with the literature values. By fitting Johnson's conical spherical cavity model to the measured plastic zone sizes, we obtained yield strengths of 141.2 MPa for PC thin films and 178.7 MPa for PS thin films, which are ∼2 times the values expected from the literature. We propose that it is due to the AFM indentation being asymmetric, which was not accounted for in Johnson's model. A correction factor, ε, of ∼0.72 was introduced to rescale the plastic zone size, whereupon good agreement between theory and experiment was achieved.

Abstract:In this work, the mechanical and dynamic thermomechanical properties of PEEK based on FDM are experimentally investigated and evaluated comprehensively. The tensile failure mechanism of PEEK prepared by FDM and extrusion modeling (EM) was analyzed by fracture morphology observation. By conducting a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test, the crystallinity of PEEK prepared by FDM and EM was measured. The dynamic thermomechanical properties of PEEK were tested and analyzed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). For FDM-prepared PEEK samples, the yield strength and elongation were 98.3 ± 0.49 MPa and 22.86 ± 2.12%, respectively. Compared with the yield strength of PEEK prepared by EM, the yield strength of PEEK prepared by FDM increased by 65.38%. The crystallinity of FDM-prepared and EM-prepared samples was calculated as 34.81% and 31.55%, respectively. Different processing methods resulted in differences in the microscopic morphology and crystallinity of two types of PEEK parts, leading to differences in mechanical properties. The internal micropores generated during the FDM processing of PEEK significantly reduced the elongation. Moreover, according to the DMA results, the glass transition activation energy of PEEK was obtained as ΔE = 685.07 kJ/mol based on the Arrhenius equation. Due to the excellent mechanical properties of PEEK prepared by FDM processing, it is promising for high-performance polymer applications in different fields.

Abstract:The influence of process parameters, including placement speed, laser power, tooling temperature, compaction force and tape tension, on the interlaminar shear strength of CF/PEEK components in-situ consolidated by laser- assisted automated fiber placement was systematically investigated. To examine both the individual and interactive effects of these parameters, two sets of orthogonal experiments were formulated and conducted, yielding a maximum ILSS of 70.3 MPa. Analysis of variance revealed that the interaction between laser power and placement speed had the most significant effect, followed by tooling temperature, compaction force and tape tension. Furthermore, the concept of linear energy density of consolidated segments (LEDCS) was introduced to characterize and quantify the relationship between laser power and placement speed. ILSS values exceeding 50 MPa were predicted within the LEDCS range of 1.58 J/mm to 3.75 J/mm. Finally, the failure modes of the samples were elucidated through scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Nanoindentation technique and scanning force microscopy have been used to measure directly the polyethylene modulus along the chain axis. Single crystals of polyethylene were employed in order to obtain well-aligned chain segments. To minimize effects of scanner creep, a Z scan rate of 3Hz was employed. The “X Rotate” value of 25° was selected to eliminate effects of lateral tip motion. The results were analyzed by the Oliver–Pharr method for which direct observation and measurement of the contact area are not required. Considering the influence of tip roundness on the projected contact area, the nanoindentation results were analyzed by the Sawa method. The chain modulus obtained from the thinner polyethylene single crystal sample was 204±21GPa by the Oliver–Pharr method and 168±17GPa by the Sawa method. The lower values than expected were due to substrate effects and anisotropy of chain deformation during nanoindentation. An extrapolation of the chain modulus obtained by various strains to zero nanoindentation eliminated the effect of substrate and anisotropy of chain deformation. The corresponding chain modulus obtained from the thicker sample was 278GPa by the Oliver–Pharr method and 267GPa by the Sawa method, respectively, in better agreement with the value of 340GPa determined theoretically.

Abstract:Hard-elastic polyethylene (HEPE) cast films are the key intermediate product for producing PE microporous membranes (dry process) used as separators in Lithium battery. The effects of temperature on the deformation mechanisms of HEPE cast films are systematically studied with in-situ synchrotron radiation small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques during stretching in a wide temperature range from 25 to 135 degrees C. The structural evolutions and mechanical behaviors show three distinct features, which contribute to the rough divisions of the temperature space into three regions (I/II/III) with alpha-I relaxation temperature (T alpha-I) and the onset melting temperature (T-onset) as the boundaries. On the basis of the evolutions of the structural parameters like long period (L-m), micro-strain (epsilon(m)), orientation parameter (f(200)), crystallinity (X-c) and etc., lamellar separation is the main deformation mode in the linear elastic strain zone. And microphase separation of interlamellar amorphous, lamellar crystal slipping and melt-recrystallization are proposed to determinate the later non-linear mechanical behaviors in the three temperature regions, respectively. The full view of deformation mechanisms in the 2D temperature-strain space aids to deepen the understanding of the nonequilibrium structural evolutions in hard-elastic polyethylene films and guide the manufacture of high-performance microporous membranes with dry process.
An Experimental Study on the Thermomechanical Coupling Effects of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone under Dynamic Impact

Abstract:Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites are widely utilized in aerospace, medical devices, and automotive industries, renowned for their superior mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance. Despite these advantages, the thermomechanical coupling behavior of CF/PEEK under dynamic loading conditions is not well understood. This study aims to explore the thermomechanical coupling effects of CF/PEEK at elevated strain rates, employing Hopkinson bar impact tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for detailed characterization. Our findings indicate that an increase in temperature led to significant reductions in the yield strength, peak stress, and specific energy absorption of CF/PEEK, while fracture strain had no significant effect. For instance, at 200 °C, the yield strength, peak stress, and specific energy absorption decreased by 39%, 37%, and 38%, respectively, compared to their values at 20 °C. Furthermore, as the strain rate increased, the yield strength, peak stress, specific energy absorption, and fracture strain all exhibited strain-hardening effects. However, as the strain rate further increased, above 4000 s-1, the enhancing effect of the strain rate on the yield strength and peak stress gradually diminished. The interaction of the temperature and strain rate significantly affected the mechanical performance of CF/PEEK under high-speed impact conditions. While the strain rate generally enhanced these properties, the strain-hardening effect on the yield strength weakened as the temperature increased, and both the temperature and strain rate contributed to the increase in specific energy absorption. Microdamage mechanism analysis revealed that interface debonding and sliding between the fibers and the matrix were more pronounced under static compression than under dynamic compression, thereby diminishing the efficiency of stress transfer. Additionally, higher temperatures caused the PEEK matrix to soften and exhibit increased viscoelastic behavior, which in turn affected the material's toughness and the mechanisms of stress transfer. These insights hold substantial engineering significance, particularly for the optimization of CF/PEEK composite design and applications in extreme environments.

Abstract:Better understanding of how thermoplastics like polyether ether ketone (PEEK) spread on fiber surfaces within a composite, or themselves during fused filament fabrication is crucial for high-quality part production. Yet, due to its high melting temperature, the properties of molten PEEK have been rarely investigated. In this study, the viscosity, surface tension, and spreading dynamic behavior of molten PEEK on different substrates (glass, silicon wafer, and steel) were systematically explored. The analysis of the contact angle dynamics showed that both the classical hydrodynamics approach (HD) and molecular-kinetic theory (MKT) could model the experimental data satisfactorily. The relative contribution of the viscosity, as depicted by the MKT, to the energy dissipation process was found to dominate the contact-line friction contribution. In addition, a good agreement was found when calculating the physical work of adhesion between PEEK and the substrates in three different ways: at high temperatures (molten state), at room temperature (solid state), and using a combination of both states. This is a promising result indicating that the bonding ability of PEEK during processing could be predicted by characterizing its surface properties in the solid state.

Abstract:Carbon fiber fabric-reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (CFF-PEEK) composites exhibit exceptional mechanical properties, and their flexibility and conformability make them a promising alternative to traditional prepregs. However, the formation of the CFF-PEEK composite is trapped in the high viscosity of PEEK, the smooth surface, and tightly interwoven bundles of CFF. It is more difficult for the resin to flow through the fibers of complex textile structures. Here, a simple film stacking method using the hot-pressing process of plain-woven CFF-PEEK thermoplastic composites is discussed. The uniform distribution of PEEK resin between each layer of CFF reduces the flow distance during the molding process, preventing defects in the composite material effectively. Four process parameters, including molding temperature (370, 385, 400, and 415 °C), molding pressure (1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 MPa), molding time (10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 90 min), and pre-compaction process, are considered. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), tensile strength, and flexural strength of CFF/PEEK composites are evaluated to optimize the process parameters. Moreover, ultrasonic scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are employed to observe the formation quality and microscopic failure modes of CFF/PEEK composites, respectively. The ultimate process parameters are a molding temperature of 410 °C, molding pressure of 10 MPa, molding time of 60 min, and the need for the pre-compaction process. Under the best process parameters, the ILSS is 62.5 MPa, the flexural strength is 754.4 MPa, and the tensile strength is 796.1 MPa. This work provides valuable insight for studying the process parameters of fiber fabric-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composites and revealing their impact on mechanical properties.

Abstract:Process parameters, as the core factor to control the forming quality of composites, are crucial for the processing of composites. In this paper, plain‐woven carbon fiber fabric reinforced polyether ether ketone (CFF/PEEK) thermoplastic composites are fabricated by hot‐pressing process. Influence of the critical process parameters, including molding temperature, molding pressure and holding time, on mechanical properties of CFF/PEEK composites are investigated. The tensile, flexural and short‐beam shear properties of CFF/PEEK composites fabricated by different process parameters were tested as evaluation indicators to achieve the optimization of process parameters. Most importantly, to deeply and systematically reveal the influence mechanism of process parameters, the high‐temperature contact angle of CFF‐PEEK and the viscosity‐temperature characteristics of PEEK were observed and analyzed. In addition, the forming quality and microscopic failure modes of CFF/PEEK composites were observed by optical, metallographic and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. This work provides a research idea and technical route for studying the process parameters of fiber reinforced polymer composites and revealing their influence mechanism on mechanical properties.

Abstract:The mechanical characteristics of PEEK-based layered composites with unidirectional carbon fibers fabricated under various compression molding conditions have been investigated. It has been shown that it is possible to increase the modulus of elasticity in transverse bending (up to 60 GPa) and bending at maximum load (up to 770 MPa) by changing the molding pressure (using pre-pressing up to 6.5 MPa at intervals). Composites made at a constant pressure of 8 MPa (170 kJ/m2) have the maximum impact toughness.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of 3D-printed polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (PEEK CF20) composites. Using a specifically optimized 3D printing process parametric condition, samples of pure PEEK and PEEK CF20 (containing 20% carbon fiber) were fabricated. Mechanical properties were estimated by tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests, performed as per ISO and DIN standards. Results indicated that PEEK CF20 exhibits significantly enhanced mechanical properties compared to pure PEEK. The tensile strength of PEEK CF20 was 81.069 MPa, compared to 76.070 MPa for pure PEEK. Maximum load values were 1456.608 N for PEEK CF20 and 1286.137 N for pure PEEK, while ILSS values were 15.76 MPa for PEEK CF20 and 11.82 MPa for pure PEEK. Microstructural analysis through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed that PEEK CF20 had better fiber-matrix bonding and fewer defects compared to pure PEEK.

Abstract:Continuous carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites have excellent mechanical properties, but their processing techniques are limited. Therefore, we promoted a braiding method based on the hybrid fiber method by hot-compacting CF/PEEK plain weave fabrics to solve the problem of difficult wetting between CF and PEEK. Four parameters—melting temperature, molding pressure, crystallization temperature and the resin contents—were investigated for optimized fabrication. After studying the melting range, thermal stability and the contact angle of PEEK under different temperatures, the melting temperature was set at 370 °C. An ultra-depth-of-field 3D microscope was adopted to investigate the effects of molding pressure in the melting stage. The tensile strength or modulus along and perpendicular to the carbon fiber direction and crystallinity under different crystallization temperatures were analyzed. As a result, the sample crystalized at 300 °C showed an excellent tensile properties and crystallinity. The increased mass ratio of PEEK ranging from 50.45% to 59.07% allowed for much stronger interfacial strength; however, the higher resin content can lead to the dispersion of CFs, loss of resin and the formation of defects during processing. Finally, the optimal resin mass content was 59.07%, with a tensile strength of 738.36 ± 14.49 MPa and a flexural strength of 659.68 ± 57.53 MPa. This paper studied the optimized processing parameters to obtain better properties from CF/PEEK plain weave fabrics and to further broaden the specific applications of CF/PEEK composites, demonstrating a new direction for its fabrication.

Abstract:The impact resistance of UHMWPE is related to temperature and strain rate. In order to determine the compressive mechanical properties of UHMWPE, quasi-static and dynamic compression tests were conducted on UHMWPE using an MTS universal testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar equipment, respectively. Stress–strain curves for UHMWPE over the temperature range of −40 °C~100 °C and strain rate range of 0.001~3300 s−1 was generated. By comparing the stress–strain curves of UHMWPE with molecular weights (MWs) of 3, 6 and 9 million in a quasi-static state, it was found that UHMWPE with a MW of 6 million had better compressive mechanical properties than other UHMWPE samples. Using the stress–strain curves for UHMWPE with a MW of 6 million at different strain rates and temperatures, the yield strength of UHMWPE increased with an increasing strain rate and decreased with increasing temperature were obtained. Based on the quasi-static and dynamic experimental results for UHMWPE with a MW of 6 million, a constitutive model of plasticity at different temperatures and strain rates was established. This model agreed well with the experimental results. This study provides both theoretical and empirical reference for the study of the mechanical properties of UHMWPE materials.

Bi-directional regulatable mechanical properties of 3D braided polyetheretherketone (PEEK)

Abstract:Fabricating adjustable mechanical properties of biomaterials at different level remains an important challenge in obtaining suitable bone substitutes with stiffness at micro scale and toughness at macro level. In this study, the changes in structure and properties of three dimension braided polyetheretherketone (3D-braided PEEK) after hot-pressed at 345 °C, 355 °C and 365 °C were investigated. The hyperfield 3D microscopy images and DSC revealed more compact macrostructure and lower crystallinity of 3D braided PEEK at higher hot-pressing temperature. The depth-sensing indentation data exhibited a reduction in elastic modulus of 3D braided PEEK with increasing the hot-press temperature, but its strength and toughness measured via universal material experiment machine increased. These results suggested that the micro-mechanics properties of braided PEEK matrix can be adjusted by altering its intrinsic crystal structure that governed by the hot-pressing temperature, whereas its macro-mechanics characteristics by changing its macrostructure that depended on textile structure. Present findings made a breakthrough in simultaneously regulating the micro- and macro-mechanics properties of PEEK in an opposite manner, which should have promising application in the development of customized orthopedic implants.
