Abstract:This paper reports on an integrative approach to a fingerprint sensor for an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). By redesigning the current driver hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin-film transistor (TFT) in the display pixel and making it a dual-gate photosensitive TFT with pi-shape channel, a fingerprint-sensor-integrated display pixel can be enabled with a potentially high sensitivity through properly biasing the TFT into the subthreshold region. We designed, fabricated and characterized the single-pixel TFT followed by the demonstration of a 4 x 4 sensor array along with capturing the first images.

Abstract:A highly transparent, capacitive-type fingerprint-sensing panel is demonstrated using an active sensor matrix based on zinc oxide (ZnO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). In particular, the ZnO TFTs are used in each pixel not only as select switches but also for pre-amplification of signals. Compared to the select switch scheme, the pre-amplifier scheme shows significantly enhanced signals. It produces clear 50x50 size and 254 dpi fingerprint images, from which the minutia features are extracted. Furthermore, the sensor panel exhibits stable operations under the illumination of white light. This letter may open up potential applications of on-display transparent electronics that involve active circuits.

Abstract:We developed a large area and low cost optical fingerprint recognition product based on LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) process. A high efficient a‐Si pin sensor is introduced, the quantum efficiency under white light is 70% and the dark state current density is E‐10 A / mm2. The “one‐to‐one” and “one to multiple” structures of sensor and micro lens are compared, and the “one‐to‐one” optical path structure is systematically analyzed and evaluated. The optical path focal length is about 100 μm. The fingerprint recognition effect is significantly improved by adding a BM shading layer, and this scheme can effectively avoid the screen burning problem caused by the high luminous intensity of pixels in the fingerprint unlocking area.

Abstract:An in‐screen ultra‐thin optical waveguide fingerprint sensing technology was demonstrated as an example of glass photonics (vs silicon photonics). It can be seamlessly integrated with OLED displays of phone devices or any other transparent surfaces for large area (or even full screen) in‐screen fingerprint sensing. Due to its unique optical designs with sensors facing the opposite side of the cover glasses, the fingerprint sensors can measure undistorted images with very high resistance to ambient light. The theory of optical designs and the system architecture of sensors are explained. A 1.1 inch sensor arrays were fabricated and integrated to OLED displays and transparent surfaces to verify the performances of the new fingerprint sensing technologies. It shows that the proposed system can successfully acquire the fingerprint images under 100,000Lux ambient light intensity.

Abstract:A thorough study on the gate driver integrated with hydrogenated amorphous-silicon thin-film transistors (a-Si:H TFTs) for active-matrix flat-panel display (AM-FPD) is carried out in this work. The single stage circuit of the a-Si: H gate driver consists of input, pull-up, pull-down, and low-level holding units. The operation principle of the driver is described in detail. The subtle static and dynamic characteristics of the a-Si: H TFT based circuit are analyzed systematically for the first time. The long term reliability issue is also addressed. Design equations for determining the device sizes of the circuit are derived. The TFT-LCD panels integrated with the designed gate driver are fabricated to verify the design efficiency.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted much attention in recent years, due to their promise in large‐area light sensing applications. Here, high‐resolution slot‐die‐coated large‐area bulk heterojunction organic photodiode (OPD) arrays are reported. The OPD uses a novel electron transport layer, indium gallium zinc oxide in combination with a molybdenum oxide top‐electrode. Together, these effectively reduce dark current densities to very low levels of ≈10−7 mA cm−2 at −2 V. The OPDs show linear behavior in a wide range of light intensities and high detectivity values under reverse bias conditions. When coated on a 508 ppi TFT backplane, a high‐quality optical fingerprint scanner capable of imaging in reflection is realized. The optical and electrical properties of the fingerprint sensor are characterized and high‐resolution fingerprint images are obtained.

Abstract:A hybrid thin film transistor (TFT) technology is proposed and demonstrated, which features a simultaneous fabrication of amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFTs with low off-current and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) TFTs with high carrier mobility on one substrate in one single process. For the a-Si TFT fabrication, the active film is the as-deposited LPCVD a-Si film, whereas, for the poly-Si TFT fabrication, the poly-Si active film is the locally crystallized LPCVD a-Si film. The localized crystallization is realized via using metal-induced lateral crystallization (MILC) method. This proposed technology is applicable to active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) pixel circuits where switching TFTs and driving TFTs are required to be with low off-current and high on-current, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we designed and fabricated an optical filter structure applied to the FoD (Fingerprint on Display) technology of the smartphone, which contains the microlens array, black matrix, and photodetector to recognize the fingerprint on a full touchscreen. First, we used optical ray tracing software, ZEMAX, to simulate a smartphone with FoD and a touching finger. We then further discussed how the aperture and microlens influence the fingerprint image in this design. Through numerical analysis and process constraint adjustment to optimize the structural design, we determined that a modulation transfer function (MTF) of 60.8% can be obtained when the thickness of the black matrix is 4 μm, allowing successful manufacturing using photolithography process technology. Finally, we used this filter element to take fingerprint images. After image processing, a clearly visible fingerprint pattern was successfully captured.

Abstract:In today's technology driven world, it is essential to build secure systems with low faulty behavior. Authentication is one of the primary means to gain access to secure systems. Users need to be authenticated in order to gain access to the services and sensitive information contained within the system. Due to the surge in the number of touch based smart devices, there arises a need for a compatible authentication system. Historically, fingerprints have served in its fullest capacity to establish the uniqueness of an individual's identity. It can be detected using capacitive sensing techniques. In this paper we present a novel unified device using transparent electronics for both fingerprint scan and multi-touch interaction. We discuss a high resolution transparent touch sensitive device and a read out circuit that drives the capacitive sensor array for touch interactions at low resolutions and for fingerprint sensing at higher resolutions. Using circuit simulation and custom Verilog-A model for transparent thin-film transistors, we verified that our design can sense fingerprints in 8.25 ms and detect touches in 0.6ms with an efficient power consumption of 1 mW. The results show that such a device can be realized and can serve as a very efficient means of user authentication. Furthermore, from the usability aspect, the proposed device is essential as it provides user transparent and non intrusive authentication.

Abstract:AbstractDue to the surge in the number of touch based smart devices, there is a growing need for touch based authentication. Historically, fingerprint has been one of the most effective ways for establishing the uniqueness of an individual's identity. Motivated by the fact that both touch sensing and fingerprint scan can be based on the same capacitive sensing principle, one can design a single unified sensing device that can support both multi‐touch interactions and identity sensing based on fingerprint biometrics. Such design will not only enable user friendly mobile identity solutions, but also support more elegant and compact physical design of future smart mobile devices. In this paper, we present and explore three approaches for creating such a device. They are, transparent fingerprint readers on‐top of a touch panel ‐ fingerprint reader on‐panel, unified touch‐fingerprint panel, and touch‐fingerprint in‐cell TFT‐LCD. Further, we discuss the challenges faced by each approach, compare the pros and cons of each approach, and propose solutions accordingly. Finally, we conduct evaluations using state‐of‐the‐art modeling tools and perform quantitative studies.

Abstract:This letter reports on a photosensitive dual-gate amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin-film transistor (TFT) for low-level light detection. It differs from a conventional dual-gate TFT in that a 760-nm π -shape channel layer is implemented instead of a typically thin a-Si:H layer of 50 ~ 100 nm in the conventional TFTs. Not only such a device improves the photoabsorption, it also preserves the transfer characteristics of the TFT. Upon the low-level light exposure, the photosensitivity can be multiplied by operating the device in the subthreshold region. In addition, resetting the device can minimize the residual photocurrent and improves the photoresponse. The device can be, therefore, sensitive and fast enough to enable optical applications, such as low-dose indirect-conversion X-ray imaging and large-area document scanning.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel active-matrix self-capacitance touch panel circuit. Each touch pixel contains only one thin film transistor. The principle of the touch event detection is to detect the voltage change, which is caused by the change of electrode capacitance. The voltage sensing by capacitance sensor is converted to capacitive digital data which compare with default value to judge whether the touch event is touched or not. The simplest structure increase maximizes the sensing pad area and reduce the parasitic effects. An array of $5\times 5$ capacitive sensing active-matrix self-capacitive touch panel based on the proposed solution is designed and implemented. The potential for high precision and high reliability is proven in the measurement results.

Abstract:In this paper, an integrated hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a‐Si:H) thin‐film transistor (TFT) gate driver circuit design with the time division driving method is demonstrated for in‐cell touch display panels. The design can avoid long‐term biasing of the pull‐up TFT in the conventional gate driver circuits and address the issues due to leakage current at Q node in the circuit during the touch sensing period. Therefore, the overall reliability of the circuit is improved. The design of the circuit is also simple without needing any additional signal inputs. As a result, the proposed circuit design can be used to pause display operation to perform touch sensing operation several times per frame, which can realize 60 Hz display scanning and 120 Hz touch reporting rate.

Abstract:A under-display optical fingerprint CMOS image sensor (CIS) is proposed and was prototyped using 0.11- CIS technology. Two analog storage nodes that act as a ping-pong buffer are embedded in each pixel of the global-shutter CIS, rendering a digital buffer unnecessary and increasing the operating frame rate. A processor with automatic exposure (AE) and black-level correction is embedded in the CIS to shorten the data transmission time. The AE and dynamic range enhancement functions are initiated to increase the success rate of fingerprint recognition. The full well capacity and sensitivity of the global-shutter CIS are 9 ke− and 21 V/(lux s), respectively. A prototype of the fingerprint sensor consumed only 26 mW with a 3.3-V supply voltage. An imaging lens and the CIS were combined to form the prototype of a compact camera module (CCM). Each pixel size is , equivalent to a panel resolution of 747 dots per inch with an optical ratio of 5. The sensor chip size is mm2, and the sensing area is mm2, occupying 40.5% of the chip. The prototype CCM was successfully embedded in a mobile phone, and the performance of the CIS was validated in the temperature range of −20°C to 50°C. Even when the interrupt interval for the serial peripheral interface communication was 300 ms, the CIS as a slave device could capture the fingerprint images clearly.

Abstract:Thin-film transistor (TFT) active matrix (AM) arrays have been developed to achieve many applications, including flat panel displays, digital x-rays, digital microfluidics (DMF) and high-throughput biosensors. Here, we focus on a review on TFT array technologies for biological sensing systems, which are regarded as one of the most promising emerging application fields of TFTs. As an important part of the biological sensing system, the DMF chip will be introduced. In particular, development of the TFT-based AM DMF (AM-DMF) chips, which possess the characteristics of higher throughput and higher flexibility of manipulating liquid samples, will be discussed in details. Further, the developed TFT array based biological sensing systems will be summarized and discussed as well. Finally, we present prospects for AM-DMF chips and biosensors, along with a brief conclusion.

Abstract:So far traditional fingerprint recognition platform uses CPU to realize algorithm. This kind of platform cannot meet the demands of market concerning power consumption and portability. With the occurrence of standard CMOS technology fingerprint sensor chip which is integrated with SPI, USB and parallel data interfaces, as well as the wide application of DSP in the field of image processing, an embedded fingerprint recognition architecture based on DSP becomes absolutely the research direction of future fingerprint recognition system. The paper presents the solution to build a hardware platform for an embedded fingerprint recognition system based on DSP. It explains the control method and the image sampling of the sensor. It analyzes the performance features of DSP. Finally it analyzes the control method to get image with the highest quality. This system has good flexibility. It not only provides a solid hardware structure for future fingerprint recognition software, but also has huge reference value for future research and development of embedded fingerprint recognition system that requires high speed, low cost and high recognition rate.
