Abstract:To explore the mechanism of nucleate pool boiling of cryogenic fluids, an experimental apparatus was built to conduct a visualization study and verify the CFD boiling model. Apart from the general measurements of the super-heat and heat flux, the influences of super-heat on bubble departure diameters were specially analyzed. Based on the observations, the whole nucleate boiling process from bubble formation to departure from the heated wall can be divided into three stages: low heat flux stage; transitional stage; fully developed nucleate boiling (FDNB) stage. CFD simulations with several existing correlations and the attained values from the experiments for the bubble diameter were finally conducted, and the results fitted well with the present experimental data.

Abstract:In this study, the transient three-dimensional numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with the non-empirical boiling and condensation model have been conducted for isolated boiling bubble behaviour in a subcooled pool. The effects of the wettability on the heating surface for the subcooled bubble departure behaviour were investigated. The numerical results showed in very good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, resulting from the wall heat flux evaluation, it was found that the wall heat flux near the contact line at the bottom of the bubble just before the bubble departing from the heating surface increases with increases of the degree of subcooling.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of flowing and boiling in micro channels are presented, including the modeling of bubble dynamics of nucleate boiling, and a description of the interface of two phases with the volume-of-fluid (VOF). The two calculated cases are compared with related experimental data in literature. Some simulated results are found corresponding well to the experimental data. The simulated results also show the details of 3-dimensional heat transfer and the flow in micro channels, which are helpful to the investigation of the mechanism of two-phase heat transfer and flow in micro channels.

Abstract:The latest version of the newly developed liquid-vapor phase-change lattice Boltzmann method, with a conjugate thermal boundary condition imposed at the solid-fluid interface, is applied to simulate numerically pool boiling from smooth, infinitely long, upward-facing, horizontal heated surfaces under controlled wall temperature conditions. A parametric study is carried out to investigate effects of wettability as well as heater and fluid physical properties on pool boiling curves, from onset of nucleation to critical heat flux (CHF) through transition boiling to stable film boiling. It is found that although a heater's wettability has no effect on film boiling, it has important effects on nucleate boiling and transition boiling. Decreasing heater wettability shifts the nucleate and transition boiling curves to the left, decreases the maximum heat flux, decreases the minimum heat flux (MHF), and lowers the Leidenfrost temperature. With the increase of the heater's thermal conductivity, both the MHF and the Leidenfrost temperature decrease, but this has no effect on nucleate boiling, CHF, or film boiling. On the other hand, increasing the vapor's thermal conductivity has no effect on nucleate boiling, but it increases the MHF and decreases the Leidenfrost temperature in transition boiling as well as in film boiling.

Abstract:High heat flux electronic devices put forward new requirements for heat dissipation, and boiling heat transfer technology is widely used because of its higher heat dissipation capacity. In this study, the volume of fluid method was employed, along with the incorporation of the Lee phase-change mass transfer model, to investigate two-phase flow and heat transfer in vertical upward rectangular microchannels. The heat flux was varied within the range of 10–40 kW/m2, while the mass flux was varied within the range of 200–600 kg/m2 s. With the increase in heat flux, bubble flow, slug flow, churn flow, and annular flow were found successively. A phase diagram was established to predict the flow pattern transition during the boiling process. When the flow pattern changes to the churn and the annular flow, the active nucleation site density increases obviously with the Boiling number (Bo). A new correlation was proposed for two-phase flow boiling heat transfer, suitable for vertical upward channels in microscale fluids. The friction factor obtained using the Darcy friction factor equation agrees well with the simulation results at a high-pressure drop. The instability in microchannels increases with the increase in heat flux, particularly in annular flow, resulting in more severe wall temperature fluctuations.

Abstract:An average bubble number density (ABND) model was formulated and numerically resolved for the subcooled flow boiling of liquid nitrogen. The effects of bubble coalescence and breakup were taken into account. Some new closure correlations describing bubble nucleation and departure on the heating surface were selected as well. For the purpose of comparison, flow boiling of liquid nitrogen was also numerically simulated using a modified two-fluid model. The results show that the simulations performed by using the ABND model achieve encouraging improvement in accuracy in predicting heat flux and wall temperature of a vertical tube. Moreover, the influence of the bubble coalescence and breakup is shown to be great on predicting overall pressure beyond the transition point.

Abstract:This article presents a 2-D numerical simulation on nucleate boiling using the VOSET method. Heat transfer through a liquid microlayer around a three-phase contact point is incorporated by a multiscale system method. A temperature interpolation method is presented for solving temperature field in cells containing liquid-vapor interface. Apart from the single-bubble model, computations are carried out for two-bubble and bubble merger models. Heat fluxes predicted by simulation are compared with experimental correlations and good agreement is obtained. In addition, simulation results of bubble's behavior also verify some boiling mechanisms.

Abstract:Bubble growth during nucleate boiling in a large pool of liquid was modeled by numerically solving the unsteady Navier-Stokes laminar flow equations with the energy equation to predict the vapor and liquid flow fields. The analysis assumed two-phase, transient, three-dimensional, laminar flow with the Boussinesq approximation for the buoyancy. The volume of fluid method was used with the level set method to predict the bubble interface motion. The numerical investigations studied the dynamics and heat transfer rates associated with the coalescence of bubbles generated on two microheaters. The results for various wall superheats and liquid subcoolings illustrate the bubble growth and interaction dynamics throughout the coalescence process and the wall heat fluxes associated with the bubble nucleation and coalescence. In some cases, the bubble coalescence traps an evaporating liquid layer between the bubbles that then quickly evaporates, resulting in high heat fluxes. In other cases, the bubbles very quickly coalescence while the bubbles are still in the fast inertial controlled growth regime and the liquid layer between the bubbles is pushed out without evaporating, resulting in low heat fluxes as the surfaces are covered with vapor. These results show how similar conditions can lead to very different heat fluxes during coalescence as has been seen experimentally.

Abstract:In this study, in order to clarify the heat transfer characteristics of the subcooled pool boiling and to discuss its mechanism, the boiling and condensation model for numerical simulation on subcooled boiling phenomena has been developed. In this paper, the three dimensional numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with the boiling and condensation model which consisted of the improved phase-change model and the relaxation time based on the quasi-thermal equilibrium hypothesis have been conducted for the subcooled pool boiling phenomena especially regarding to the bubble departure behavior from the heated surface. The results of the numerical simulations were compared with the experimental data obtained by the high-speed camera (Phantom 7.1) with the Cassegrain optical system, and then the influence of the degree of subcooling for the bubble departing behaviors including their shape changes from the heated surface were numerically predicted. As the results, the numerical results of the bubble departing behavior from the heated surface showed in good agreement with the experimental observations quantitatively.

Abstract:This paper presents a revision for VOSET,to make it applicable to two-phase flow with phase change.With this method,film boiling on horizontal surface is simulated.Nu number obtained by our simulation agrees well with Klimenko's correlation.The results show that in low heat flux,vapor departs from the wall in the form of bubbles,while in higher heat flux,vapor departs in shape of ribbon.

Abstract:In this study, in order to establish a numerical boiling and condensation model on subcooled pool boiling, the numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi‐interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with a phase‐change model including bubble growth and condensation processes are performed. As a result, it is found that the numerical results of both bubble growth and condensation rates are very slow compared with the experimental results and the existing analytical models. In order to solve this discrepancy, the original boiling and condensation model is improved by introducing the following models; (1) the phase‐change model in the original enthalpy method based on a mass fraction is replaced to that based on a volume fraction (i.e., the improved phase‐change model); (2) a relaxation time derived by considering unsteady heat conduction is introduced into the improved phase‐change model. Resulting from the numerical simulation with the improved phase change model combined with the relaxation time of the phase‐change process, the numerical results in both bubble growth and condensation processes show in good agreement with the trend of experimental result and the existing analytical models. Moreover, In order to further progress the numerical simulations of bubble growth process, the patch‐work calculations with changing grid size have been performed in this study.

Abstract:Bubble formation in saturated flow boiling in 2D microchannels, generated from a microheater under constant wall heat flux or constant wall temperature conditions, is studied numerically based on a newly developed lattice Boltzmann model for liquid-vapor phase change. Simulations are carried out to study effects of inlet velocity, contact angle, and heater size on saturated flow boiling of water under constant wall heat flux conditions. Important information, such as effects of static contact angle on nucleation time and nucleation temperature, which was unable to be obtained by other numerical simulation methods, is obtained. Furthermore, effects of inlet velocity, contact angle, and superheat on nucleate boiling heat transfer in steady flow boiling of water under constant wall temperature conditions are also presented. It is found that the nucleate boiling heat transfer at the microheater is higher if the heater surface is more hydrophilic, because the superheated vapor at the hydrophilic wall has a thinner thermal boundary layer and a larger thermal conductivity.

Abstract:The pool boiling on the micro-pin-finned surfaces was numerically investigated using the curvilinear coupled Volume of Fluid and level set method (VOSET) with phase change. The information interaction problem on the boundary of a complex domain was solved by the partition identification function and unstructured storage. The experiment and simulation of single bubble growth on the micro-pin-finned surface were conducted, whose results agree with each other and validate the accuracy of the numerical method. The bubble characteristics such as bubble shape, temperature distribution, pressure field and micro flow were analyzed and compared with that on the smooth surface, which demonstrates that the vortex near the three-phase contact line plays a significant role in the bubble growth and boiling heat transfer. The effects of wall superheat, gravity level, contact angle and the height of micro-pin-fins were investigated. With the increase of superheat, the average heat flux and bubble diameter increase while the departure time decreases. Under microgravity, the bubble diameter and departure time are larger compared with terrestrial gravity, which deteriorates the heat transfer performance. The fin height basically has no effect on the initial bubble growth. However, there exists a critical fin height leading to the smallest departure diameter and time. Besides, the double bubble coalescence on the micro-pin-finned surface was also investigated. The bubble growth rate reduces after the coalescence. During the coalescence, the surface energy converts into kinetic energy causing the violent deformation of the bubble shape, which promotes the liquid supply and increases the wall heat flux. Abstract:In order to study the heat transfer on flow boiling and bubble behavior in vertical tubes,the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method was used to simulate the flow and heat transfer processes respectively by the improved pseudo potential model and the thermal model.The simulation results were compared with the empirical relationships to verify the correctness of the model.The influence of bubble behavior on boiling heat transfer coefficient was investigated.The results show that the heat transfer coefficient presents periodic fluctuations with the nucleation,growth,slip and detachment of bubbles.Finally,the effect of gravity acceleration on bubble behavior and boiling heat transfer was investigated.The larger the gravity,the shorter the growth cycle of the bubble,the greater the boiling heat transfer coefficient.

Abstract:The closure equations of the two-fluid model for heat and mass transfers between liquid phase and vapor phase during boiling flow of liquid nitrogen were developed.The formulas of the interfacial area concentration and the bubble departure diameter were modified for accurate prediction.The equations were incorporated into the two-fluid model and the commercial CFD code CFX-4.3.Two-dimensional numerical simulations of subcooled boiling flow of nitrogen in a vertical tube were performed by using the modified CFD code.The numerical results showed encouraging agreement with the experimental data available in the literature.Detailed distributions of the void fraction,heat transfer coefficient and liquid temperature difference were obtained,leading to better understanding of the basic mechanisms of boiling flow and related cooling systems.
