Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report a mode-locked fiber laser working at a 1 GHz fundamental repetition rate. The laser delivers a 600 mW average power at a pump power of 1800 mW. The pulse spectrum bandwidth was 23 nm to support 64 fs near-transform-limited pulses. An octave-spanning supercontinuum from 590 to 1350 nm was generated in a tapered photonic crystal fiber solely with the mode-locked fiber-laser output, without amplifiers. A 30 dB f(ceo) beat signal was detected via f-to-2f interferometer.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked Yb3+-doped fiber laser with a fundamental repetition rate of 5 GHz and wavelength tunable performance is demonstrated. A piece of heavily Yb3+-doped phosphate fiber with a high net gain coefficient of 5.7 dB/cm, in conjunction with a fiber mirror by directly coating the SiO2/Ta2O5 dielectric films on a fiber ferrule is exploited for shortening the laser cavity to 2 cm. The mode-locked oscillator has a peak wavelength of 1058.7 nm, pulse duration of 2.6 ps, and the repetition rate signal has a high signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB. Moreover, the wavelength of the oscillator is found to be continuously tuned from 1056.7 to 1060.9 nm by increasing the temperature of the laser cavity. Simultaneously, the repetition rate correspondingly decreases from 4.945874 to 4.945496 GHz. Furthermore, the long-term stability of the mode-locked operation in the ultrashort laser cavity is realized by exploiting temperature controls. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest fundamental pulse repetition rate for 1-μm mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber Yb:fiber frequency comb with a nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror-based Yb:fiber laser oscillator. The fiber-spliced hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber was used as dispersion compensator, which was also directly spliced to a piece of tapered photonic crystal fiber for an octave-spanning spectrum. The spectrum of the compressed 107 fs laser pulses was broadened, covering 600 nm to 1300 nm in a high-nonlinearity tapered fiber for f to 2f beating. The signal-to-noise ratio of offset frequency was measured to be 22 dB.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We report direct generation of 500MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb. The offset frequency was stabilized more than 6 hours in an open air environment. The stabilized repetition rate has an in-loop tracking stability of 4.46×10-13/τ1/2.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fundamentally mode-locked Yb-fiber laser with 3 GHz repetition rate and ∼206 fs pulse duration. The laser incorporates two enabling technologies: a 1 cm heavily Yb-doped phosphate glass fiber as the gain medium and a high-dispersion (-1300 fs2) output coupler to manage cavity dispersion. The oscillator self-starts and generates up to 53 mW average power.

Abstract:Multi-color ultrashort pulses with GHz repetition rates are promising for spectroscopic and four-wave-mixing-based applications that specifically require both fast transient response and fast refresh rate. Among existing technologies for generating multi-color ultrashort pulses, actively synchronizing multiple lasers operating at different wavelengths advances in the technical simplicity, and shows a high coherence. However, for GHz repetition rates, the short cavity design, on one hand, is sensitive to environmental perturbations that change the cavity length (thus the repetition rate); on the other hand, it challenges the active repetition-rate synchronization by adding extra free-space components. In this work, we demonstrate long-term stable synchronization between a Yb-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser and an Er-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser. The stable active synchronization is realized by using the phase-locked-loop technology that is implemented for short fiber cavities. The repetition rates of the two short fiber laser cavities can be stably locked with millihertz precision and a timing jitter of about 20 fs.

Abstract:We demonstrate 503MHz fundamental high repetition rate operation in a ring cavity passively mode-locked Yb:fiber laser incorporating a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing collimator and a piece of all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. The Yb doped fiber was directly fabricated as one fiber pigtail into the functional collimator, greatly shortening the cavity length and facilitating the splicing operation. A 5cm long photonic bandgap fiber with abnormal dispersion at the lasing wavelength (centered at 1030nm) decreases the net dispersion for shorter output pulses. The spectral bandwidth of the pulse was 34nm. The direct output pulse was measured to be 156fs and the dechirped pulse was about 76fs. With this innovative Yb:fiber pigtailed WDM collimator, the ring cavity laser has the potential to work at a repetition rate up to GHz.

Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:Many applications require GHz femtosecond pulses with the center wavelength tunable over a broad range. Recently we have demonstrated a 3-GHz, femtosecond Yb-fiber laser system with >12-W average power using the pre-chirp management method. Nonlinear wavelength conversion based on this powerful laser source has enabled us to derive 3-GHz femtosecond sources at other useful wavelengths: using stimulated Raman scattering inside photonic crystal fibers, we have implemented a femtosecond Raman soliton source tunable between 1.06-1.35 mu m; using fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation, we have demonstrated a 14-fs source centered at 850 nm with >300-mW average power.

Abstract:An optical frequency comb based on Yb: ring fiber laser was demonstrated. This is the first time, to our knowledge, f(ceo) has been generated directly from the oscillator without further amplifications above 500 MHz repetition rate. The signal-to-noise ratio of the offset frequency was above 40 dB at 300 kHz resolution bandwidth, which supports easy stabilization. The offset frequency was stabilized for more than 6 h in an open air environment without temperature control.
