Abstract:Phase-separation is commonly observed in multimetallic nanomaterials, yet it is not well understood how immiscible elements distribute in a thermodynamically stable nanoparticle. Herein, we studied the phase-separation of Au and Rh in nanoparticles using electron microscopy and tomography techniques. The nanoparticles were thermally annealed to form thermodynamically stable structures. HAADF-STEM and EDS characterizations reveal that Au and Rh segregate into two domains while their miscibility is increased. Using aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM and atomic electron tomography, we show that the increased solubility of Au in Rh is achieved by forming Au clusters and single atoms inside the Rh domains and on the Rh surface. Furthermore, based on the three-dimensional reconstruction of a AuRh nanoparticle, we can visualize the uneven interface that is embedded in the nanoparticle. Abstract:We report on thermal stability and phase transition behaviors of triangular Au nanoprisms through in situ heating transmission electron microscopy. With rising temperature, Au nanoprisms exhibit fluctuating surface reconstructions at the corner regions. When a quasi-melting state is reached at the temperature below bulk melting points, the evaporation is initiated commonly at a corner with low curvature and containing sharp intersection points. The subsequent annealing process leads to the gradual evaporation, which, in the absence of thick carbon coverages, is accompanied by marked shape reconstructions. The thermal stability and evaporation behaviors are not evidently regulated by nanoprism aggregations.

Abstract:Understanding the mixing behaviour of elements in a multielement material is important to control its structure and property. When the size of a multielement material is decreased to the nanoscale, the miscibility of elements in the nanomaterial often changes from its bulk counterpart. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and quantitative experimental insight into this process. Here we explored how the miscibility of Au and Rh evolves in nanoparticles of sizes varying from 4 to 1 nm and composition changing from 15% Au to 85% Au. We found that the two immiscible elements exhibit a phase-separation-to-alloy transition in nanoparticles with decreased size and become completely miscible in sub-2 nm particles across the entire compositional range. Quantitative electron microscopy analysis and theoretical calculations were used to show that the observed immiscibility-to-miscibility transition is dictated by particle size, composition and possible surface adsorbates present under the synthesis conditions. Nanoparticles containing immiscible elements can be synthesized under certain experimental conditions.
Thermal stability and its effects on the mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-Ti alloys

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of the rapidly solidified (RS) Al-Ti alloy after thermal exposure treatment have been investigated. It is revealed that the Al3Ti particle, which disperses homogeneously within the Al matrix, is coarsened via a volume diffusion controlled growth mechanism described by the LSW equation. The coarsening rate increases with increasing volume fraction of the particle. The Young’s modulus of the Al-Ti alloy increases with increasing particle volume fraction, which can be predicted by the Halpin–Tsai equation and the Eshelby method. The modified shear lag model used to estimate Young’s modulus of the particulate reinforced composite is hereby re-modified to give a more precise evaluation. The yield strength of the RS Al-Ti alloy is found to increase with increasing volume fraction and decreasing particle size of the reinforcement. It is indicated that the continuum strengthening mechanism (the modified shear lag model and the Eshelby model) fails to explain the increased yield strength. Therefore, strengthening mechanisms based on dislocation movement have been taken into account. Considering microstructure changes in the matrix due to the presence of the reinforcement, the Eshelby type model is believed to give the yield strength of the RS Al-Ti alloy quite accurately.

The Thermal Stability of Asymmetric Separated Configurations inside Alloy Nanoparticles: Atomic-Scale Modeling of Pd-Ir Nanophase Diagrams

Abstract:Compared to alloy bulk phase diagrams, the experimental determination of phase diagrams for alloy nanoparticles (NPs), which are useful in various nanotechnological applications, involves significant technical difficulties, making theoretical modeling a feasible alternative. Yet, being quite challenging, modeling of separation nanophase diagrams is scarce in the literature. The task of predicting comprehensive nanophase diagrams for Pd-Ir face-centered cubic-based three cuboctahedra is facilitated in this study by combining the computationally efficient statistical-mechanical Free-energy Concentration Expansion Method, which includes short-range order (SRO) with coordination-dependent bond-energy variations as part of the input and with rotationally symmetric site grouping for extra efficiency. This nanosystem has been chosen mainly because of the very small atomic mismatch that simplifies the modeling, e.g., in the assessment of vibrational entropy contributions based in this work on fitting to the Pd-Ir experimental bulk critical temperature. This entropic effect, together with SRO, leads to significant destabilization of low-T Quasi-Janus (QJ) asymmetric configurations of the NP core, which transform to symmetric partially mixed nanophases. First-order and second-order intracore transitions are predicted for dilute and intermediate-range compositions, respectively. Caloric curves computed for the former case yield the NP-size dependent transition latent heat, and in the latter case critical temperatures exhibit a specific scaling behavior. The computed separation diagrams and intracore solubility diagrams reflect enhanced elemental mixing in smaller QJ nanophases. In addition to these diagrams, the revealed near-surface compositional variations are likely to be pertinent to the utilization of Pd-Ir NPs, e.g., in catalysis.

Abstract:<p>Bimetallic Janus nanostructures (JNs) have attracted much interest because of their promising potential applications induced by unique interface effects, especially in catalysis. Catalytic stability acts a role as significant as catalytic efficiency in the potential applications of catalysts. However, the response of bimetallic JNs to high temperature has been poorly investigated due to their complex structure and sublimation kinetics. Herein, the thermal stability and sublimation mechanisms of CuAg JNs are studied through in situ annealing experiments performed in an aberration-corrected FEI Titan 80-300 transmission electron microscope operated at 300 kV. It is proven that CuAg JNs begin to sublimate until the temperature increases to 800 °C, although Ag nanostructures can always begin to sublimate at temperatures as low as 500 °C. Interestingly, Cu and Ag atoms sublimate simultaneously with a molar ratio likely to preserve at approximately 1 because Cu partially dissolves into the Ag phase at higher temperatures. Furthermore, a rational atomic motion mechanism is proposed to explain the phase transition in which the solid solution forms and the whole special sublimation process. These in situ observations promise to be helpful for understanding the evolutionary behaviors of bimetallic JNs under high temperatures arising in catalytic processes and other applications.</p>

Abstract:In this study, we used an in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) heating system to investigate the sublimation-induced morphological changes of cubic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Ag-based core-shell structures and the influence of shell coverage on the thermal stability. In contrast to previous research performed with small Ag nanoparticles (<30 nm), here we found that large-particle Ag NPs (>50 nm) underwent a three-stage sublimation-induced morphological change at 800 °C, in the sequence uniform (I)-nonuniform (II)-uniform (III) sublimation. The (110) and (100) planes were the main sublimation planes during stages I and II. When the reaction reached stage III, the sublimation rate decreased as a result of an increase in the sublimation energy barrier. For core-shell NPs, the sublimation process began with stage II. For Ag NPs presenting TiO2 shells, the sublimation process was initiated at a relatively low temperature (700-750 °C) because of a local heating effect; for Ag NPs with carbon shells, the reaction was suppressed through surface atom passivation, thereby enhancing the thermal stability.

Abstract:The chemical and physical properties of nanomaterials ultimately rely on their crystal structures, chemical compositions and distributions. In this paper, a series of AuCu bimetallic nanoparticles with well-defined architectures and variable compositions has been addressed to explore their thermal stability and thermally driven behavior by molecular dynamics simulations. By combination of energy and Lindemann criteria, the solid-liquid transition and its critical temperature were accurately identified. Meanwhile, atomic diffusion, bond order, and particle morphology were examined to shed light on thermodynamic evolution of the particles. Our results reveal that composition-dependent melting point of AuCu nanoparticles significantly departs from the Vegard's law prediction. Especially, chemically disordered (ordered) alloy nanoparticles exhibited markedly low (high) melting points in comparison with their unary counterparts, which should be attributed to enhancing (decreasing) atomic diffusivity in alloys. Furthermore, core-shell structures and heterostructures demonstrated a mode transition between the ordinary melting and the two-stage melting with varying Au content. AuCu alloyed nanoparticles presented the evolution tendency of chemical ordering from disorder to order before melting and then to disorder during melting. Additionally, as the temperature increases, the shape transformation was observed in AuCu nanoparticles with heterostructure or L10 structure owing to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of elements and/or of crystalline orientations. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding on thermodynamic behavior and stability of metallic nanoparticles, offering theoretical insights for design and application of nanosized particles with tunable properties.

Abstract:The catalytic and plasmonic properties of bimetallic gold-palladium (Au-Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) critically depend on the distribution of the Au and Pd atoms inside the nanoparticle bulk and at the surface. Under operating conditions, the atomic distribution is highly dynamic, strongly impacting the NPs functional properties. Analyzing gas induced redistribution kinetics at operating temperatures is key in designing and understanding the behavior of Au-Pd nanoparticles for applications in thermal and light-driven catalysis, but requires the development of advanced in situ characterization strategies. In this work, we achieve the in situ analysis of the gas dependent alloying kinetics in bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles at elevated temperatures through a combination of CO-DRIFTS and gas-phase in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), providing direct insight in both the surface- and nanoparticle bulk redistribution dynamics. Specifically, we employ a well-defined model system consisting of colloidal Au-core Pd-shell NPs, monodisperse in size and composition, and quantify the alloying dynamics of these NPs in H2 and O2 under isothermal conditions. By extracting the alloying kinetics from in situ TEM measurements, we show that the alloying behavior in Au-Pd NPs can be described by a simple diffusion model based on Fick’s law. Overall, our results indicate that exposure to reactive gases strongly affects the surface composition and surface alloying kinetics, but has a smaller effect on the alloying dynamics of the nanoparticle bulk. Both our in situ methodology as well as the quantitative insights on restructuring phenomena can be extended to a wider range of bimetallic nanoparticle systems and are relevant in understanding the behavior of nanoparticle catalysts under operating conditions.

Synthesis of Ag@Au nanoparticles and their characterization of high temperature in-situ XAFS

Abstract:Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized via chemical liquid phase reduction method. They were characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The Ag@Au nanoparticles are of uniform and stable monodisperse, with an average size of the Ag core of about 8 nm, and the Au shell thickness of about 3.5 nm. DSC spectra show that core-shell particles are the most dramatic diffusion in the alloying process around 300°C, and the alloy is completely formed at 500°C. From the high temperature in-situ XAFS and the RSF curves, significant changes are clearly seen in the local structure of Au atoms in the alloying process. By fitting the data with replacement method, the Au-Au bond length gradually becomes longer from 2.86 Å to 2.89 Å and the coordination bond from 8.0 to 6.1, with 2.1 Au-Ag coordination bonds and increased degree of disorder, at the alloy formation. The alloy process is mainly based on subrogation diffusion.

Abstract:Gibbs-Thompson effect is the general term referring to the influence of interfaces on the course of phase transformations such as precipitation or solidification. Whilst attention is most often focused on the Gibbs-Thomson effect on nucleation, growth and coarsening, the present study considers the reverse process of precipitate dissolution in a nickel-base superalloy during in situ TEM observation. The presence of several distinct populations of gamma-prime precipitates (primary, secondary, tertiary and grain boundary) allows the differences due to particle size to be quantified and interpreted. Important implications arise for the selection of heat treatment schedules for nickel-base superalloys and other alloy systems.

Abstract:Targeted doping of grain boundaries has been widely pursued as a pathway for combating thermal instabilities in nanocrystalline metals. However, certain dopants predicted to produce grain boundary segregated nanocrystalline configurations instead form small nanoprecipitates at elevated temperatures that act to kinetically inhibit grain growth. In this study, thermodynamic modeling is implemented to select the Mo‐Au system for exploring the interplay between thermodynamic and kinetic contributions to nanostructure stability. Using nanoscale multilayers and in situ transmission electron microscopy thermal aging, evolving segregation states and corresponding phase transitions are mapped with temperature. The microstructure is shown to evolve through a transformation at lower homologous temperatures (< 600°C) where solute atoms cluster and segregate to the grain boundaries, consistent with predictions from thermodynamic models. An increase in temperature to 800°C is accompanied by coarsening of the grain structure via grain boundary migration but with multiple pinning events uncovered between migrating segments of the grain boundary and local solute clustering. Direct comparison between the thermodynamic predictions and experimental observations of microstructure evolution thus demonstrates a transition from thermodynamically preferred to kinetically inhibited nanocrystalline stability and provides a general framework for decoupling contributions to complex stability transitions while simultaneously targeting a dominant thermal stability regime. Abstract:By employing classic molecular dynamics simulations, we have systematically investigated the thermal stability of Cu–Ag bimetallic nanoparticles with different configurations, as well as the kinetic behavior of nanoparticles with different thermal stability during the sintering process. Our results show that the trend of thermal stability is Janus > core@shell > alloy and further investigations on the effect of thermal stability on the sintering indicate that nanoparticles with better thermal stability could effectively suppress the formation and disappearance of sintering necks at low temperature, presenting an inherent barrier to the sintering process.
