Abstract:Metal ternary nanoalloys or trimetallic nanoparticles have emerged, in recent years, as novel and relevant materials in different fields due to the synergy of three metals in a single system that leads to unique physicochemical properties as compared to mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles. In this study, the influence of composition on the structural and thermodynamic properties of Cu-Ag-Au nanoalloys with 5083 atoms is analyzed using molecular dynamics simulations. Relevant thermodynamic quantities are used to describe the melting and solidification behaviors of three models of Cu-Ag-Au nanoalloys. Our results indicate that the melting temperature presents linear and quadratic dependencies with the composition, i.e., for Cu33 Ag67−x Aux , Ag33 Cu67−x Aux , and Au33 Ag67−x Cux are Tm = 912.6 + 1.9x, Tm = 882.3 + 2.7x, and Tm = 1056.6 − 4.9x + 0.07x2, respectively. In addition, most Ag atoms segregate to the surface and the Au and Cu atoms are localized in the center of the nanoalloy during the heating process, and this trend is maintained in the cooling process. The solidification temperature does not have an explicit correlation with the composition. Furthermore, the structural analysis of cooled nanoalloys exhibits local FCC and HCP symmetries, and the excess energy shows that Cu33Ag27Au40, Au33Ag17Cu50, and Ag33Cu37Au30 are relatively more stable to form nanoalloys. Finally, the possibility of controlling the composition in these metal nanoalloys opens up potential applications in plasmonic, catalysis, and bactericidal (by Ag surface segregation) fields.

Abstract:By employing classic molecular dynamics simulations, we have systematically investigated the thermal stability of Cu–Ag bimetallic nanoparticles with different configurations, as well as the kinetic behavior of nanoparticles with different thermal stability during the sintering process. Our results show that the trend of thermal stability is Janus > core@shell > alloy and further investigations on the effect of thermal stability on the sintering indicate that nanoparticles with better thermal stability could effectively suppress the formation and disappearance of sintering necks at low temperature, presenting an inherent barrier to the sintering process.

Abstract:Nanotechnology plays an important role in the development of modern science and technology. In this paper, the alloying process of Cu and Au nanoparticles with different diameters (Cu(100 Å) and Au(70 Å), Au(100 Å) and Cu(70 Å), Au(100 Å) and Cu(50 Å) Cu(100 Å) and Au(50 Å)) was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Cu and Au nanoparticles contact each other at 300 K. The melting temperature of the Cu and Au system is about 1160 K in which the nanoparticles of the studied systems fuse rapidly. At the same time, the lattice structure of nanoparticles is also changed from face-centered cubic (FCC) to amorphous. Furthermore, shrinkage ratio and gyration radius as well as potential energy changed dramatically when the temperature reached 1160 K. The potential energy shows that more energy is needed for Cu(100 Å)/Au(70 Å) system to reach the melting temperature. Besides, the change of relative gyration radius is related to the radius of nanoparticles.

Abstract:Understanding the atomic diffusions at the nanoscale is important for controlling the synthesis and utilization of nanomaterials. Here, using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate a so far unexplored unidirectional diffusion from the Au shell to the Cu core in thermally alloying Cu@Au core@shell architecture of ca. 7.1 nm. The initial diffusion step at 423 K is found to be characterized by the formation of a diffusion layer composed of a Au-dilute substitutional CuAu-like intermetallic compound with short Cu-Au bond length (2.61 Å). The diffusion further happens by the migration of the Au atoms with large disorder into the interior Cu matrix at higher temperatures (453 and 553 K). These results suggest that the structural preference of a CuAu-like compound, along with the nanosized effect, plays a critical role in determining the atomic diffusion dynamics.
Molecular Dynamics Study on Structural and Atomic Evolution Between Au and Ni Nanoparticles Through Coalescence

Abstract:Motivated by the structure evolution experiments of Janus NiAu nanoparticles (NPs), we present a detailed study on the thermodynamic evolution of Ni and Au NPs with different ratios of Au and Ni through the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It is found that, for fixed Ni particle size (5.8 nm in diameter), the energy variation with the increasing temperature is related to the Au sizes (1.5–9.6 nm in diameter), due to the diverse atomic segregation modes. For a small Au particle, due to lattice induction, the structure will change from order to disorder and then to order. The interface defects of the merging NPs could be automatically eliminated by coalescence processes. The change in energy as the temperature increases is similar to that of monometallic NPs. For larger Au particles, the irregular variation of energy occurs and the atomic energy experience one or two reductions at least with the increase of the temperature. The segregation of Au atoms to the surface of Ni particle is dominant during the continuous heating process. The coalescence processes of Au atoms strongly determine the final morphology of the particles. Dumbbell-like, Janus and eccentric core–shell spherical structures could be obtained during the heating process. Our results will provide an effective approach to the design of novel materials with specific properties through thermal control.

Abstract:The composition- and temperature-dependent liquid structures in eight Alrich-Cu binary alloys (from hypoeutectic Al93Cu7 to hypereutectic Al70Cu30) have been experimentally and computationally studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The remarkable agreements of structure factors for all liquid Alrich-Cu alloys obtained from high-temperature high-energy XRD measurements and AIMD simulations have been achieved, which consolidates the analyses of structural evolutions in Alrich-Cu liquids during the cooling processing by AIMD simulations. The heat capacity of liquid Alrich-Cu alloys continuously increases and presents no abnormal peak when reducing the temperature, which differs from the reported prediction for 55-atom Alrich-Cu nanoliquids. The diffusivities of Al and Cu undergo an increasing deviation from Arrhenius behavior by tuning Cu concentration from 7 to 30 atomic percentages, correlated to the local ordering in these liquids by means of coordination number, bond-angle distribution, Honeycutt-Andersen index, bond-orientational order and Voronoi tessellation analyses. Upon cooling, the microstructure of the liquid Alrich-Cu alloys inclines to form Al2Cu crystal-like local atomic ordering, especially in the hypereutectic liquids. The favorable short-range ordering between Cu and Al atoms could cause the non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 to carbon-containing products carries considerable significance. Cu-Au alloys have been considered as potential bimetallic catalysts recently. However, the current theoretical study of obtaining Cu-Au alloys that could enhance the catalytic activity is insufficiently thorough. Herein, the structural properties and phase transition rules of Cu-Au nanoparticles are investigated utilizing molecular dynamics. The results indicate that the percentage of disordered atoms in Cu-Au nanoparticles decreases and the melting temperature increases with the growth of particle size. Moreover, the coordination number decreases with increasing radial distance. Cu-Au nanoparticles are coexisting in crystalline and amorphous states during melting. The structural properties of Cu-Au catalysts could be regulated by the phase transition rules, which provided a theoretical basis for the modification of surface activity.

Abstract:Melting is the most common phenomenon in nature and one of the most important properties of metallic materials. Exploring the size D and component x effects on the melting temperature T m of nanocrystals is of great significance for the design, fabrication, and application of quantum devices. In this work, a thermodynamic model without any adjustable parameters has been developed to describe the T m ( x , D ) function of bimetallic nanocrystals. The model is compared with the available experimental and simulation data and a consistent agreement is obtained, which verifies the accuracy of the prediction.

Abstract:In electronic packaging industry, it has been reported that compared with nano silver and nano copper, the complementation and coordination of Ag and Cu components enable bimetallic nanomaterials enhanced anti-electromigration and oxidation inhibition characteristics. Ag-Cu solid solution nanoparticles (ACDS NPs) has become an emerging substitution and garnered widespread attention. This research presents the investigation into the size-dependent melting behaviour of ACDS NPs and the effect of elevated temperature during the pressure-free sintering with Ag substrate through molecular dynamics simulations. The melting points of ACDS NPs turn out to be in accordance with Gibbs Thomson equation, based on which the suitable sintering temperatures have been determined within 473 and 773 K. As demonstrated by dynamic trajectories at cross section while sintering, coalescence between NPs occurs with the atomic surface diffusion at the sintering neck along the vacancy concentration gradient. 623 K is estimated to be a threshold temperature of complete integration of NPs at which the crystallographic structure collapses during sintering and recrystallizes at the late sintering stage. The dominant sintering mechanisms transferred from surface diffusion and dislocation-based plastic deformation below 573 K to atomic diffusion above 623 K. Furthermore, the results present incontrovertible dominance of Shockley dislocations and interaction energy on determining mechanical properties of sintered atomistic system. It is also revealed that the systems sintered below 673 K yield significantly lower thermal conductivity attributing to the strong localization of heat carriers for intrinsic amorphous structure than crystalline counterparts above 723 K.

Abstract:The density and the specific heat of liquid Au–Cu alloy above and below the melting temperature are investigated in a wide composition range via constant temperature and constant pressure molecular dynamics simulations. The atomic interaction of the alloy is described with the embedded-atom method (EAM). The equilibrium melting temperature is evaluated from the change in the growth direction of a crystal–liquid sandwich structure under annealing. The simulated density of the Au–Cu alloy increases linearly with decrease of the temperature, whereas the specific heat remains constant over the entire temperature range of 900–1900 K. The excess volume is calculated according to the predicted density of Au–Cu alloy. The negative value of the excess volume and the exponential concentration dependence of the specific heat indicate that the Neumann–Kopp rule does not apply to the Au–Cu binary alloy system.
Size-dependent cohesive energy, melting temperature, and Debye temperature of spherical metallic nanoparticles

Abstract:It is necessary to theoretically evaluate the thermodynamic properties of metallic nanoparticles due to the lack of experimental data. Considering the surface effects and crystal structures, a simple theoretical model is developed to study the size dependence of thermodynamic properties of spherical metallic nanoparticles. Based on the model, we have considered Co and Cu nanoparticles for the study of size dependence of cohesive energy, Au and Cu nanoparticles for size dependence of melting temperature, and Cu, Co and Au nanoparticles for size dependence of Debye temperature, respectively. The results show that the size effects on melting temperature, cohesive energy and Debye temperature of the spherical metallic nanoparticles are predominant in the sizes ranging from about 3 nm to 20 nm. The present theoretical predictions are in agreement with available corresponding experimental and computer simulation results for the spherical metallic nanoparticles. The model could be used to determine the thermodynamic properties of other metallic nanoparticles to some extent.

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoparticles are often superior candidates for a wide range of technological and biomedical applications, thanks to their enhanced catalytic, optical, and magnetic properties, which are often better than their monometallic counterparts. Most of their properties strongly depend on their chemical composition, crystallographic structure, and phase distribution. However, little is known of how their crystal structure, on the nanoscale, transforms over time at elevated temperatures, even though this knowledge is highly relevant in case nanoparticles are used in, e.g., high-temperature catalysis. Au-Fe is a promising bimetallic system where the low-cost and magnetic Fe is combined with catalytically active and plasmonic Au. Here, we report on the in situ temporal evolution of the crystalline ordering in Au-Fe nanoparticles, obtained from a modern laser ablation in liquids synthesis. Our in-depth analysis, complemented by dedicated atomistic simulations, includes a detailed structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy as well as atom probe tomography to reveal elemental distributions down to a single atom resolution. We show that the Au-Fe nanoparticles initially exhibit highly complex internal nested nanostructures with a wide range of compositions, phase distributions, and size-depended microstrains. The elevated temperature induces a diffusion-controlled recrystallization and phase merging, resulting in the formation of a single face-centered-cubic ultrastructure in contact with a body-centered cubic phase, which demonstrates the metastability of these structures. Uncovering these unique nanostructures with nested features could be highly attractive from a fundamental viewpoint as they could give further insights into the nanoparticle formation mechanism under non-equilibrium conditions.

Abstract:Supported nanoparticles (NPs) are an intense field of research in both industry and academia due to their unique catalytic properties in particular. Yet, establishing relationships between structure and activity has remained a challenge due to multiple possible compositions, interfaces, and even alloy formation. This is especially pronounced for bimetallic NPs used in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, where the structure responds dynamically to the chemical potential of the reactants and products, resulting in distinct surface structures depending on the exact reaction conditions. These phenomena have been highlighted by combining ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) and Metadynamics (MTD) in conjunction with in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, chemisorption, and CO-IR. Here, we aim to understand how particle size and simulation temperature influence the structure and dynamics of small Cu NPs using the diffusion coefficients and the radial distribution function/atomic pair density function as descriptors using unbiased AIMD simulations. We found that decreasing the particle size or increasing the simulation temperature results in increased atom mobility, highlighted by the increased metal diffusion and resulting in decreased particle crystallinity. We also find that alloying Cu with Ga significantly increases the diffusion of both elements in the particle compared to the monometallic ones, while such diffusion lies in between the individual elements composing the CuZn particles.

Abstract:In recent years, bimetallic and trimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) have become attractive materials for many researchers especially in the field of catalysis due to their interesting physical and chemical properties. These unique properties arise mainly from simultaneous effects of two different metal atoms in their structure. In this review, recent theoretical studies on these NPs using molecular dynamics simulation are presented. Since investigation of thermodynamic stabilities of metallic NPs is a critical factor in their construction for catalytic applications, our focus in this review is on the thermal stability of bimetallic and trimetallic NPs. The melting behavior of these materials with different atomic arrangements including core–shell, three-shell, crown-jewel, ordered and disordered alloy, and Janus materials are discussed. Other factors including stress, strain, atomic radius, thermal expansion coefficient, cohesive energy, surface energy, size, composition, and morphology are described in detail, because these properties lead to complexity in the melting behavior of bimetallic and trimetallic NPs.

Abstract:The relative stability of fcc and bcc solid solutions and amorphous phase with different compositions in the Cu-Al system is studied by molecular dynamics simulations with n-body potentials. For Cu1-xAlx. alloys, the calculations show that the fcc solid solution has the lowest energies in the composition region with x < 0.32 or x > 0.72, while the bcc solid solution has the lowest energies in the central composition range, in agreement with the ball-milling experiments that a single bcc. solid solution with 0.30 < x < 0.70 is obtained. The evolution of structures in solid solutions and amorphous phase is studied by the coordination number (CN) and bond-length analysis so as to unveil the underlying physics. It is found that the energy sequence among three phases is determined by the competition in energy change originating from the bond length and CNs (or the number of bonds).
[Thermography of the testicle. Preliminary study].

Abstract:The preliminary study is concerned with 25 cases that have been examined using thermography in planes to check the conditions of temperature of the testes in normal and pathological states. Normal testicular thermography is characterised by a symmetrical and constant thermographic picture, the temperature staying between 32.5 and 34.5 degrees. In the pathological states of oligoasthenospermia plate thermography shows up a particular thermic picture associated with a varicocoele whether this is clinical or subclinical. The picture is one of hyperthermia and lack of symmetry in the case of a unilateral lesion. In these cases tyeing off the spermatic vein shows a rapid return to a normal thermographic picture. These positive results have led to a more extensive and deep study which is at present in progress.

Abstract:Metallic nanoparticles have been widely studied because of their unique and potentially useful optical properties, and they are expected to be applied to high-performance photocatalyst and sensing applications. In particular, nanoparticles of noble metals, such as Au, Ag, and Cu, exhibit optical resonances based on surface plasmons, which can efficiently generate hot electrons. One strategy to fully tune the optical properties of these noble metal nanoparticles is to engineer the dielectric properties by alloying, which however is not trivial due to the existence of interphase and thermodynamic phase separation. In this study, we propose a new approach for designing and tuning the nanoparticles through thermodynamic processes. We fabricated Au–Ag–Cu ternary alloy nanoparticles through dewetting by thermally annealing thin films and investigated the optical properties and structures by transmission electron microscopy. The fabricated Au–Ag–Cu nanoparticles exhibited single or double plasmonic resonances depending on the elemental composition of samples, mainly determined by phase separation. The optical properties change accordingly, depending on element distribution and phase separation. Abstract:Metal nanoparticles have been widely used as functional materials in physics, chemistry, and biology. Understanding their unique thermodynamic properties is essential both for practical applications and from a fundamental point of view. This perspective article is an overview of recent progresses on the nanothermodynamics of metal nanoparticles and it especially highlights as examples our own studies on the structural stability, phases, phase changes, and thermodynamic functions of aluminum nanoparticles. We discuss using statistical sampling by Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics algorithms to calculate nanoparticle properties, nanophase properties, free energies, and nucleation rates, and we tried to understand the results in terms of energy landscapes by using exhaustive enumeration of the multiple structures of Al nanoparticles from all sizes up to N = 65 plus selected larger calculations.

Abstract:The coalescence and melting process of different sizes and arrangements of Ag and Cu nanoparticles is studied through the molecular dynamics (MD) method. The results show that the twin boundary or stacking fault formation and atomic diffusion of the nanoparticles play an important role in the different stages of the heating process. At the beginning of the simulation, Cu and Ag nanoparticles will contact to each other in a very short time. As the temperature goes up, Cu and Ag nanoparticles may generate stacking fault or twin boundary to stabilize the interface structure. When the temperature reaches a critical value, the atoms gain a strong ability to diffuse and eventually melt into one liquid sphere. The coalescence point and melting temperature increase as cluster diameter increases. Moreover, the arrangement of Cu and Ag nanoparticles has a certain effect on the stability of the initial joint interface, which will affect subsequent coalescence and melting behavior.

Structural Optimization and Melting Behavior Investigation of Pd-Ag Bimetallic Nanoparticles by Molecular Simulations

Abstract:Pd-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles have been researched among many fields due to their excellent electronic, catalytic and optical properties. It’s of great significance to learn about the corresponding structural characteristics with respect to the shape, the composition and the size from atomic scale. In present work, improved genetic algorithm accompanied by molecular statics simulations is applied to investigate the structural stability of Pd-Ag nanoparticles systematically. Specifically, the atomic arrangements of eight typical shaped Pd-Ag nanoparticles with different compositions and sizes are studied. Indicators based on energetics are used to characterize the structural stability. It has shown that the Pd-Ag nanoparticles with icosahedral shape are the most stable. Besides, the melting behavior of Pd-Ag nanoparticles is explored using molecular dynamics simulations and Lindemann index is employed to indicate the melting point. It is found that the melting points increase as the size increases and the icosahedral shape of Pd-Ag nanoparticles have the highest melting points.
