Abstract:Owing to its remarkable physical attributes, aluminum matrix composites strengthened by silicon carbide particles (SiCp/Al) are extensively utilized in optoelectronics, aerospace, defense, and other advanced technology sectors. However, the force variations may result from the SiCp/Al machining process's unpredictability in the SiC particles and the Al matrix, which results in surface quality that falls short of the required standards. It has been shown that the quality of the machining process can be greatly improved by employing ultrasonic vibration-assisted machining technology. Multi-dimensional ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling (MUVAM) is proposed. Through the theoretical analysis of the tool and workpiece's extrusion friction in ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling (UVAM) in different dimensions, as well as the MUVAM test found that compared with normal milling, UVAM produces much smaller force fluctuations and much smaller milling forces. In 3D UVAM, the surface roughness achieved by 3D UVAM is higher than that of 2D UVAM but lower than that of 1D UVAM and conventional milling, with an even lesser milling force. MUVAM reduces the milling force in three directions by about 50% and reduces the surface roughness by a maximum of 47.32% compared to ordinary milling.
