Abstract:To evaluate the impact sintering additives have on the processing and performance of 8mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ), the 25–1525°C sintering kinetics, phase purity, microstructure, and electrical properties of a single batch of 8YSZ powder surface-coated with 1, 3 and 5mol% of barium, bismuth, calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, lithium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, strontium or zinc were investigated via constant heating rate dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and AC impedance spectroscopy. For electrochemical applications where dense 8YSZ is required, iron was found to give the best combination of 8YSZ cubic zirconia phase stability, high oxygen ion conductivity, and enhanced densification kinetics. 5mol% iron was found to reduce the 8YSZ sintering temperature by ~150°C.
Properties of Yttria Doped Zirconia Electrolyte with Li2O Additive

Abstract:The zirconia doped with yttria of 8%(mole fraction,the same below)(8YSZ) is a widely used electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs).The crystal structure,lattice parameter,sintering ability,microstructure,conductivity and cell performance of 8YSZ with various Li2O contents(i.e.,n% of Li2OYSZ,where n = 0,0.25,0.50,1.00,1.50,1.70,2.00,2.50 and 3.00) were investigated.The results show that the lithium ions can dissolve into the ZrO2cubic lattice and reduce its lattice parameter due to small radius of lithium ions.The YSZ remained its cubic lattice until Li2O addition of 1.70%.Li2O addition of 0.25% and 0.50% enhanced both the density and electrical conductivity of the YSZ samples.The conductivities obtained at Li2OYSZ of 0.25% and 0.50% and 800 ℃ were 0.030 2 S/cm and 0.027 6 S/cm,which were 1.35 and 1.24 times greater than that of pure YSZ,respectively.The density of the YSZ samples reduced gradually when the Li2O addition was greater than 1.00%.The dense ceramic with the pure cubic phase could be obtained at sintering temperature of 〉 1 400 ℃ and Li2OYSZ of ≥1.70%.The SOFCs with Li2OYSZ of 0.25% and 0.50% electrolyte displayed open circuit voltages of 〉 1.0 V at 800 ℃,indicating the absence of electronic conductivity,and exhibiting the maximum power densities that are greater than those of the cell with pure YSZ electrolyte.It was demonstrated that a small amount of Li2O addition into YSZ electrolyte could be a desirable modification approach for zirconia-based SOFC.

Abstract:The effects of ZnO sintering additive on the sintering behavior and electrochemical properties of YSZ-based solid electrolyte were investigated. With the addition of 3 mol% ZnO, the linear shrinkages of YSZ at 1200 degrees C increased from 7.1% to 15%, and the relative density at 1200 degrees C increased from 82% to 94.6%. XRD confirmed that a small amount of Zn can be incorporated into the fluorite lattice, and EDX result showed that ZnO mainly distributed at the grain boundary. ZnO modified YSZ had denser structure and fewer pores than YSZ. The increased densification of YSZ by ZnO addition can significantly increase the grain and total conductivities. Compared with YSZ, the total conductivity of 2 mol% ZnO modified YSZ increased from 0.013 to 0.021 S.cm(-1) at 800 degrees C.

Abstract:This study aimed to enhance the sinterability and conductivity of yttria fully stabilized zirconia electrolyte through co-doping by 2 mol% of ZnO and different contents of MnO 2 (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 mol%) at two sintering temperatures of 1300 and 1400 °C. Phase composition identification, density, microstructure, and conductivity of the samples were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Archimedes' method, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. The XRD results revealed that ZnO and MnO 2 are successfully doped in the fluorite structure of YSZ sintered at 1400 °C, and the cubic structure is completely preserved. However, at a sintering temperature of 1300 °C, the (111) peaks of doped samples were slightly split, which implied a slight phase transformation of YSZ from cubic to a tetragonal structure. The co-doped samples, at both sintering temperatures, showed higher relative density and grain size compared with pure YSZ. The addition of 2 mol% of ZnO and 0.5 mol% of MnO 2 at 1400 °C increased the relative density of YSZ from 81.6% to 95.1%. The increase in relative density and grain size, while maintaining the cubic structure, caused an increase in the conductivity of the mentioned sample. Compared with pure YSZ, the sample's total conductivity increased from 7.37 to 10.03 S m −1 at 800 °C. The proposed composition showed better sintering behavior, lower activation energy of grain conductivity, and higher conductivity than pure YSZ. This behavior is thought to be due to the facilitating rearrangement of atoms during sintering and an increase in oxygen ion vacancy concentration due to co-doping with the appropriate amount of ZnO and MnO 2 .

Abstract:Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3)-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were prepared via the solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction spectroscopy results indicate that doping with 2 mol% Bi2O3 and adding 10 mol% yttria result in a stable zirconia cubic phase. Adding Bi2O3 as a dopant increases the density of zirconia to above 96%, while reducing its normal sintering temperature by approximately 250 degrees C. Moreover, electrical impedance analyses show that adding Bi2O3 enhances the conductivity of zirconia, improving its capability as a solid electrolyte for intermediate or even lower temperatures.

Abstract:The properties of yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ) related to the sintering process were discussed. YSZ nano-powders about 40–100 nm as raw material, the sub-micrometer grain sizes such as 0.4–3 μm in YSZ were gotten by sintering process at 1300 °C, which was performed at 1000 °C for 2 h, then raised the temperature at the rate of 50 °C/h to 1400 °C, then decreased directly to 1300 °C in 30 minutes, finally at 1300 °C for 5–20 hours. The ratio of bigger grain size becomes larger as the holding time increasing at 1300 °C. The grains less than 1 μm are about 50%, eg, 43.2%, 52.2% and 51.1% related to 1300 °C holding 5 hours, 8 hours and 10 hours, respectively. As YSZ grain size became small, the electrical conductivities did not decrease, even increased, about 0.20 s/cm at 1000 °C. The reduced sintering temperature and time were benefited to co-fire with the electrodes in electrode-supported SOFCs.

Abstract:In this study, investigations of sintering behavior and properties were performed on lithium-stabilized Na-beta ''-alumina (LiSBA) ceramics with and without 15 wt% 8 mol% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (8YSZ) addition synthesized by solid phase reaction. Changes of phase composition, relative density, and grain size in the ceramics sintered at different temperature were analyzed. It was shown that phase transformation in sintering ceramics was controlled by relationship between the Na2O evaporation and Li+ ions stabilization, while microstructure evolution was controlled by pore-boundary interaction. LiSBA with YSZ addition (Zr-LiSBA) showed more significant variation of beta '' phase fractions, slower grain growth and faster densification with increasing sintering temperature, which were caused by enhanced Na2O evaporation and gas transport by oxygen ion conductor ZrO2 as well as the drag effect by second phase particles of YSZ in Zr-LiSBA ceramics. Zr-LiSBA specimens sintered at optimized condition achieved higher Vickers microhardness and intermediate Na+ ion conductivity.

Abstract:Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte was fabricated by plaster casting method. The pure cubic fluorite structure can be obtained after the samples were sintered at the temperature of 1300 °C. Measuring and calculating results show that the crystal grain size increases and hole size decreases as the sintering temperature is raised. At the same temperature, the conductivity of grain is almost the same, but the grain boundary conductivity are different. The active energy of grain and grain boundary sintered at 1300 °C, 1400 °C and 1550 °C are 0.82, 0.66, 0.86 and 0.98 eV respectively.

Abstract:Yttria-doped zirconia (YSZ) is a remarkable functional material with wide applications, including solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen sensors, due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. However, the elevated operating temperatures using the conventional YSZ electrolytes for the solid ionic devices yield high cost and limited lifetime. Here we report YSZ nanowires with doping content rang of 0–10mol% prepared by electrospinning. The variety of tetragonal and cubic phases in the nanowires has been detected, which demonstrates that in comparison to bulk counterparts, the high-temperature phases in zirconia-based nanowires could be stabilized at lower doping levels, owing to the critical crystallite size effect. The electrical conductivity of uniaxially aligned nanowires with respect to yttria content has been investigated. The highest ionic conductivity of 0.01Scm−1 is achieved at a low temperature of 375°C for the YSZ nanowires with 6.5mol% yttria, which is 290 times enhancement over corresponding bulk.

Abstract:A ZrO2-based electrolyte, stabilized with 6 mol% CaO and 4 mol% Y2O3 was synthesized. This electrolyte consists of a single phase fluorite-type solid solution with cubic symmetry and exhibits a uniform microstructure. In the temperature range 1273–1673 K, the direct current (DC) conductivity of this electrolyte is higher than that of 12 mol% CaO-stabilized ZrO2 and comparable to that of 8 mol% Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2, prepared with the same processing procedure. It was suggested, by comparing the electrical behaviors of both binary systems ZrO2–CaO and ZrO2–Y2O3, that the enhancement of the ionic conductivity of mixed CaO/Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 at high temperature can be attributed to the increase in the concentration of the oxygen vacancies with weaker association energies.

Abstract:Li6.4La3Zr1.7W0.3O12 (LLZWO) garnet-type structure was prepared with SiO2 as sintering aid via solid-state reaction method. The prepared ceramic samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra to judge the structure. Microstructure, lithium-ion conductivity and electronic conductivity of all components were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiostatic polarization measurement, respectively. These investigations show that SiO2 was found to be a better additive to reduce the porosity and improve conductivity. The relative density and ionic conductivity increase first and then decrease with increasing SiO2 content. The relative density of 93.8% and ionic conductivity of 9.11 × 10−4 S cm−1 in the sample with 0.2 wt% SiO2 were obtained. In contrast, the activation energy reaches a minimum value of 0.38 eV.

Abstract:Improvements in phase stability and dielectric characteristics can broaden the applications of zirconia in ceramics. Herein, a series of Y2O3-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics are synthesized using solid-state sintering, followed by an investigation into their phase evolution, grain size, dielectric constant, and breaking field. As the Y2O3 content increases from 0 wt% to 4 wt%, the as-grown YSZ ceramics undergo a distinct phase transformation, transitioning from monoclinic to monoclinic + tetragonal and further to monoclinic + tetragonal + cubic, before finally returning to monoclinic + cubic. Significant changes occur in the internal microstructure and grain size of the ceramics as the phase composition alters, resulting in a reduction in grain size from 3.17 μm to 0.27 μm. Moreover, their dielectric constants exhibit an increasing trend as the Y2O3 content increases, rising from 3.92 to 13.2. Importantly, the dielectric breakdown field of these YSZ ceramics shows a similar variation to the phase evolution, ranging from 0.11 to 0.15 MV/cm. This study sheds light on the phase evolution and dielectric properties of YSZ ceramics, offering an efficient strategy for enhancing their dielectric performances.

Abstract:Yttria stabilized zirconia(yttria-stabilized zirconia,YSZ) was the most favorable material as the electrolyte in the SOFC.Thin YSZ electrolyte prepared by nano-powder as raw material was explored,its micro-structure was tested through X-ray diffraction(XRD),and conductivity of ceramic body was measured by AC four-terminal method.Experiments showed that the optimal sintering temperature was 1300 ℃.In this temperature,electrolyte had less content of porosity,grain size distribution and high conductivity,and at 800 ℃,it's conductivity can reach 0.08 S.m-1,which was the ideal high-temperature electrolyte materials.

Abstract:Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (8 mol%Y2O3-ZrO2, 8YSZ) ceramics was fabricated by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting process. At a fixed solid loading of 10 vol% of the initial slurry, the influence of sintering temperature on the porosity, open porosity, pore size distribution and microstructure was discussed. The relationship between compressive strength, room temperature thermal conductivity and microstructure was also discussed. Porous 8YSZ ceramics with high porosity ranging from 65% to 74% was fabricated by adjusting sintering temperature. A uniform pore size distribution was observed, and the mean pore size ranged from 0.68 to 1.82 μm. The compressive strengths of porous 8YSZ ceramics were between 7.92 and 13.15 MPa.The thermal conductivity of porous 8YSZ ceramics at room temperature (as low as 0.053 W/m·K) was one order of magnitude lower than that of dense 8YSZ ceramics (~2.2 W/m·K), and decreased with increasing sintering temperature.

Abstract:The effects of CaF2 addition on the phase constitutions and electrical properties of 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia were investigated. Three samples were prepared, one being doped with 10 mol% CaF2 and sintered at 1473 K and the other two doped with 20 mol% CaF2 and sintered at 1473 and 1673 K, respectively. Single phased fluorite-type solid solution with cubic symmetry was observed for each sample. However, F ion exists only in the sample doped with 20 mol% CaF2 and sintered at 1273 K. Electrical measurements showed that addition of CaF2 may enhance the ionic conductivity of the yttria-stabilized zirconia.

Abstract:Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics were fabricated by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting method for potential applications in heat-insulation materials. The effect of sintering temperature on compressive strength of porous YSZ ceramics was investigated on the basis of measurements linear shrinkage, porosity and pore size. As the sintering temperature increased from 1350 to 1550°C, a decrease of porosity from 77 to 65%, a decrease of average pore size from and an increase of linear shrinkage from 15.4 to 31.8% were observed. The compressive strength increased remarkably from 3 to 27MPa with increasing sintering temperature from 1350 to 1550°C, which was related to the corresponding change of linear shrinkage, porosity, pore size and microstructure. A remarkable decrease of compressive strength with increasing porosity was observed. The compressive strength decreased also with increasing pore size.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and phase transformation in lanthanum zirconate/yttria stabilized zirconia (LZ/YSZ) composites was studied. The phase stability of tetragonal YSZ was found to be decreased with the increase in sintering temperature along with the increase in volume fraction of LZ in LZ/YSZ composites. The addition of LZ in YSZ resulted in the phase transformation from tetragonal YSZ to monoclinic YSZ at high temperatures. Minor fraction of monoclinic phase was found in YSZ matrix of 30LZ and 50LZ composites after sintering at 1473K for 200h. The fraction of cubic phase was also found to increase with the increase in sintering time and temperature. However, no correlation of cubic phase was found to exist with the addition of LZ content. Coherent growth between LZ/YSZ interface was observed using transmission electron microscopy. Due to different expansion coefficients of LZ and YSZ, the largest thermal stress appeared (during cooling process) across the LZ/YSZ interface. Thermal stress promoted the phase transformation (tetragonal to monoclinic) in YSZ and distorted the grains. In LZ/YSZ composites, the average tensile stress increased with the increase in LZ content and temperature. At all sintering temperatures, the YSZ exhibited tensile stress while a compressive stress exited in LZ matrix. In all three (30LZ, 50LZ and 70LZ) composites, the maximum average stress was present in the LZ/YSZ matrix at sintering temperature of 1675K.

Abstract:Composite tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) sinters with Al2O3 contents of 0, 1, 5, 10 and 15 mol% were obtained from a 3-YSZ powder prepared using the gelatin method, and the influence of alumina addition on the mechanical and electrical properties of the obtained sinters was investigated. Al2O3 was added via two different methods, namely during the preparation of the 3-YSZ powder and via impregnation using an alcohol solution of aluminum nitrate. The obtained green bodies were sintered for 2 h in air at 1773 K. The structure and morphology of the two series of sinters were investigated using XRD and SEM-EDS, their electrical properties were determined using impedance spectroscopy, and their hardness and critical stress intensity factor were measured using the Vickers indentation test. We established that both the amount of alumina and the method used to introduce it into the 3Y-TZP matrix significantly affect the physicochemical properties of the obtained polycrystalline material. The 3-YSZ/10 mol% Al2O3 sinter that had Al2O3 introduced during the preparation of the 3-YSZ powder was found to exhibit the most advantageous mechanical and electrical properties while still having sufficiently low porosity.

Abstract:The potential of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) as a solid electrolyte material for all-solid-state batteries is widely recognized. The bottleneck size of Li ion migration and the microstructure greatly affect the ionic conductivity of LLZO. This study aims to examine the impact of Y doping on the crystal structure, microstructure, and ionic conductivity of Fe-modified LLZO ceramic. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Y doping shrinks the bottleneck size and lattice constant. SEM results demonstrate that the incorporation of Y not only suppresses the abnormal grain growth but also improves the densification of Fe modified LLZO ceramic.
