Abstract:The GLES Open Science Challenge 2021 was a pilot project aimed at demonstrating that registered reports are an appropriate and beneficial publication format in quantitative political science that helps to increase transparency and replicability in the research process and thus yields substantial and relevant contributions to our discipline. The project resulted in the publication of this special issue, which includes seven registered reports based on data from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) collected in the context of the 2021 German federal election. This concluding article of the special issue brings together the perspectives of the participating authors, reviewers, organizers, and editors in order to take stock of the different experiences gained and lessons learned in the course of the project. We are confident that future projects of a similar nature in political science, as well as authors, reviewers, and editors of registered reports, will benefit from these reflections.

Abstract:Over the past decade, computing power has increased, new sensing technologies have been developed, and our understanding of how we interact with the earth has evolved, leading to new opportunities and priorities in geophysical research. These changes have been more rapid in some areas than others, and new topics have emerged as well. It is challenging for geophysicists, including junior staff and undergraduates starting their geophysics journeys, to stay abreast of scientific and industrial trends. Thus, the Early Career Subcommittee of the SEG Research Committee (RC) thought it imperative to survey members of the RC in 2022. To that end, a survey was conducted, and responses were collected from 43 RC members.

Environmental Geochemistry and Health

Abstract:Emerging from the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is time to ground ourselves and retrospectively assess the recent achievements of SEGH over the past years. This editorial serves as a comprehensive report on the progress made in comparison to the aspirations and goals set by the society's board in 2019 (Watts et al., Environ Geochem Health 42:343–347, 2019) (Fig. 1) and reflects on the state of the SEGH community as it reached its 50th anniversary at the close of 2021 (Watts et al. Environ Geochem Health 45:1165–1171, 2023). The focus lies on how the SEGH community navigated through the extraordinary challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020, and to what extent the 2023 targets have been met.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Debates about presidential greatness have been with us for decades, facilitated in part by numerous systematic surveys of scholars with expertise in American history and politics. Nevertheless, the voice of political scientists in this debate has been relatively muted when compared particularly with the role that historians have had in making these determinations. This article introduces and assesses results of a recent effort to capture the attitudes of political science presidency experts about presidential greatness. By surveying the membership of the APSA Presidents and Executive Politics section, we could identify and then compare specifically the attitudes of political scientists against the growing body of ratings and rankings of a phenomenon with long-standing interest and importance.

Abstract:The AGU Fellows Committee takes its role seriously and makes every effort to eliminate any bias in the Fellows selection process. Gender imbalance is an issue that continues to concern the committee.The following information may help put this problem into perspective. The total number of Fellows selected in any year cannot exceed 0.1% of the membership at the end of the previous year. For 2004 this limit was 41 Fellows. Although women represent 17% of the total AGU membership, the percent of members over the age of 40 that are women is only 11% (most Fellows are over 40 at election). The total number of women nominated was 13 (7% of nominations). The total number of men nominated was 127 (93% of nominations).

Climate Change Task Force Report for the American Astronomical Society

Abstract:The AAS Strategic Plan for 2021-26 called for the creation of a task force to identify how the AAS can meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The AAS and its membership recognize the danger climate change represents to humanity and our world, and to astronomy -- as a profession, a hobby, and a cultural good. Our profession in general -- and the AAS in particular -- should work to make it possible for all astronomers to have an equal opportunity to be successful without needing to incur high carbon emissions, and to preserve astronomy for future generations. A study was completed of the carbon emissions associated with the AAS, finding that 84% of total AAS-related emissions are from in-person conferences. We also conducted a survey of AAS members to determine their attitudes about climate change. Respondents overwhelmingly (97%) think that the AAS should reduce its carbon footprint. Our task force created a list of fourteen recommendations, with two ranked as top priorities: The AAS should not schedule additional in-person meetings before 2030 and it should work to innovate the AAS conference model. Based upon our analysis it is clear that online interaction is the only way to increase participation while meaningfully decreasing emissions. Our recommendations are aligned with the Astro2020 Decadal Survey as well as AAS values to disseminate our scientific understanding of the universe, and to do our work in an ethically responsible way. Because of their other benefits -- particularly in making our society more welcoming to those who traditionally have been excluded -- we feel that these are sound decisions, worthy of implementation even if the AAS wasn't trying to reduce its carbon footprint. They simply make sense as steps towards a professional society that better serves a broader membership, as our profession evolves to be greener, more inclusive, and more productive.

Abstract:THE annual general meeting of the Chemical Society was held in London on April 19, the president, Prof. W. N. Haworth, in the chair. During the business portion of the meeting, Prof. Haworth referred to a letter he had received from N. Derzhavin, conveying greetings from men of science in Latvia and directing attention to the crimes committed by the German invaders on the Latvian people, and his proposed reply was read and endorsed. Prof. Haworth also agreed to convey the deep sympathy of the Council to the American Chemical Society on the loss of their great national leader, and also greetings to the Belgian, French and Russian Chemical Societies, expressing joy at the liberation of their countries from the foreign invader. In presenting the Report of Council for 1944, reference was made to the retirement of the general secretary and to the following resolution passed by the Council: "The Council has received with profound regret the news of the coming retirement of Mr. S. E. Carr from the office of General Secretary. It desires to place on record its deep feeling of gratitude for the great services he has rendered to the Society over a period of forty-two years." It was declared that Prof. H. V. A. Briscoe had been elected honorary secretary, and the following as new members of Council: as Vice-Presidents, Prof. A. J. Allmand, Prof. J. W. Cook and Prof. I. M. Heilbron; as Elected Ordinary Members of Council, Prof. Wilson Baker, Mr. R. P. Bell, Prof. H. T. S. Britton, Dr. D. H. Hey, Dr. B. Jones, Dr. R. J. W. Le Fèvre, Prof. J. M. Robertson, Dr. F. S.
