Abstract:Three commercial ion-exchange resin based catalysts were compared under different temperature and liquid-volume hourly space velocity (LHSV) in the isobutene (IB, C4) dimerization reaction using a plug flow reactor in the absence of any selectivity enhancing component. High IB conversion for all catalysts was obtained at or higher than 50°C. But, diisobutene (DIB, C8) selectivity decreased with the increase of temperature. High C8 selectivity was observed with LHSV higher than 1.5 at 50°C. The best catalytic performance of the three resins did not show obvious differences. The effect of the selectivity enhancers on the stability of the resins was also studied. Desulfonation was observed in the C4 dimerization reaction when water or the commonly used enhancer tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) was added to the feed. The deactivation of catalyst resulted in decrease of both IB conversion and C8 selectivity. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy showed that desulfonation happened in both para and ortho positions of the sulfonated benzene rings. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013

Abstract:A new kinetic model for commercial unit of toluene disproportionation and C9-armatiocs transalkylation is developed based on the reported reaction scheme. A time based catalyst deactivation function taking weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) into account is incorporated into the model, which reasonably accounts for the loss in activity because of coke deposition on the surface of catalyst during long-term operation. The kinetic parameters are benchmarked with several sets of balanced plant data and estimated by the differential variable metric optimization method. Sets of plant data at different operating conditions are applied to make sure validation of the model and the results show a good agreement between the model predictions and plant observations. The simulation analysis of key variables such as temperature and WHSV affecting process performance is discussed in detail, giving the guidance to select suitable operating conditions.

Abstract:The main technical challenges for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with plasma-assisted catalysis in industrial applications are large volume plasma generation under atmospheric pressure, byproduct control, and aerosol collection. To solve these problems, a back corona discharge (BCD) configuration has been designed to evenly generate nonthermal plasma in a honeycomb catalyst. Voltage-current curves, discharge images, and emission spectra have been used to characterize the plasma. Grade particle collection results and flow field visualization in the discharge zones show not only that the particles can be collected efficiently, but also that the pressure drop of the catalyst layer is relatively low. A three-stage plasma-assisted catalysis system, comprising a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) stage, BCD stage, and catalyst stage, was built to evaluate toluene treatment performance by BCD. The ozone analysis results indicate that BCD enhances the ozone decomposition by collecting aerosols and protecting the Ag-Mn-O catalyst downstream from aerosol contamination. The GC and FTIR results show that BCD contributes to toluene removal, especially when the specific energy input is low, and the total removal efficiency reaches almost 100%. Furthermore, this removal results in the emission of fewer byproducts.

Abstract:Species and contents of various constituents,especially sulfides in light benzol are analyzed by gas chromatogram-mass spectrometry (GC-MS),gas chromatogram-flame ionization detector(GC-FID),and gas chromatogram-flame photometric detector(GC-FPD).The results show that the total content of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzol,toluene etc.in the light benzol is up to 94.90%;other impurities mainly include sulfide,nitride and olefin etc.,among which removal of thiophene and alkyl thiophene is the vital question in hydro-refining of the light benzol.By comparison of various benzol hydro-refining technologies abroad,it is considered that the low-temperature benzol hydro-refining technology is the preferable benzol refining process for coking enterprises in China.Finally,the development of technologies and catalysts for the crude benzol hydro-refining in China is introduced,and improvements for low-temperature benzol hydro-refining and corresponding catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:The thermal stability of five commercial ion-exchange resin catalysts was studied by means of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) at elevated temperatures of up to 600 degrees C and isothermal temperatures in the range of 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C. Resin samples with different initial water contents were also investigated. The study indicated that TGA, as a complementary evaluating method for the plug flow reactor system approach, could be used as a fast analyzing means for study on the thermal stability of ion-exchange resin catalysts. The stoichiometric calculation of the isothermally treated resin catalysts based on the FTIR analysis and acid capacity confirmed that the weight loss of the resins at 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C was caused by the desulfonation process and that desulfonation occurred mainly at the para-position of the benzene ring in the resins. H+ ions and moisture played an important role in the desulfonation process.

Abstract:The performance of ion-exchange resin catalysts during isobutene (IB) dimerization was investigated under different IB contents, temperatures and liquid-volume hourly space velocity (LHSV) using a plug flow reactor in the absence of any selectivity enhancing component. High IB content and temperature resulted in a high conversion and C(12) selectivity but low C(8) selectivity. The influence of LHSV was related with the IB content: LHSV had great effect at high IB content, while the performance of ion-exchange resin changed little with LHSV if IB content was low. The effect of water on the stability of resins was also studied. Desulfonation was observed during the C(4) dimerization reaction when water was added to the feed. Chlorinated resin was more stable than conventional polystyrene-based resins during the test.

Furthermore, the degradation of the higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs was easier compared to the lower chlorinated ones in the presence of the VWTi catalysts, which was primarily driven by the tendency of the higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs to be adsorbed on the surface of the catalyst and further destructed due to their lower vapor pressure. In addition, powdered catalysts should be preferred over the honeycomb shaped ones as they exposed higher PCDD/Fs degradation efficiencies under equal reaction conditions. The chemical composition and a range of the relevant to the study properties of the catalysts, such as surface area, crystallinity, oxidation ability, and surface acidity, were analyzed. The study ultimately supports the identification of the preferred characteristics of the VWTi catalysts for the most efficient degradation of toxic PCDD/Fs and elucidates the corresponding deactivation reasons of the catalysts.

Abstract:Distillation residue is an important byproduct in industrial distillation process and was identified as hazardous waste (HW), with an anual production of over 5 million tons in China. Recent experiments found different emission characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in a same hazardous waste incinerator (HWI) due to feeding HWs. Studies on different HWs found that PCDD/Fs concentrations formed from distillation residue were significantly higher than that of other HWs, indicating a risk of PCDD/Fs excessive emission in HWIs when mixed in the feeds. In this study, a comprehensive research on distillation residue was conducted. The distillation residue had low activation energy and lost weight rapidly at 215 °C. Volatiles were mainly pyrolyzed into organics such as chloroneb (C8H8Cl2O2). Thus PCDD/Fs could be rapidly formed through precursor synthesis. Abstract:A gas-solid two-phase flow reaction model was developed to evaluate the performance of a novel catalytic cracking reactor in the residue-to-chemicals (RTC) process. Coupled TFM, EMMS drag, and 12-lump kinetic models were employed to simulate the flow reaction process. The reaction temperature and product yields at the reactor exit aligned well with real industrial RTC reactor test results, indicating the reliability and effectiveness of the coupling model. Catalyst particles formed an internal circulation structure in the reactor, increasing the instantaneous catalyst-to-oil ratio. The reactor exhibited low axial and radial temperature gradients with higher reaction temperatures, accelerating the catalytic cracking rate and enhancing the selectivity for high-value products. The effects of the catalyst-to-oil ratio, catalyst inlet temperature, and feedstock mass flow rate on the flow reaction process were optimized. Results showed that both the catalyst-to-oil ratio and catalyst inlet temperature influenced the overall catalyst velocity distribution. Within the limit range, increasing the catalyst-to-oil ratio increased feedstock conversion, gasoline, LPG, dry gas, and coke yields, but decreased diesel yield. Conversely, increasing the feedstock mass flow rate showed opposite trends. Different trends in product yields were observed with varying inlet catalyst temperatures, with optimal product distribution at 973.15 K.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a technology capable of producing sustainable hydrocarbon fuels from wet waste, reducing volumes of that waste as an added benefit. However, sustainable fuel production through HTL has yet to reach commercial scale and opportunities for improvements to process safety remain. This work describes low-pressure, low-temperature, two-stage solvent extraction and separation of HTL products utilizing naphtha range hydrocarbons. The similar qualitative solubility behavior of bitumen and biocrude (BC) with respect to paraffin versus naphthene or aromatic solvent composition allows us to examine a process comparable to solvent processing of bitumen. Lab-scale experiments were carried out to demonstrate the basic process and evaluate key parameters. The laboratory work indicates that using aliphatic/aromatic solvent mixtures at 80 °C results in a recovery of nearly 100% of the biocrude from the product mixture with reduced carbon content on the hydro-char. The findings illustrate the potential of solvent extraction for HTL biocrude processing. On a commercial scale, such a process may de-risk HTL, improving prospects for commercialization, opening the door to widespread conversion of wet-waste and waste biomass to sustainable fuels by HTL.

Abstract:The slurry phase hydrocracking was carried out in a 150 kg/d pilot plant with a change of reaction temperature and different feedstocks including vacuum residue (VR), thermal cracking residue (TCR), 58% VR + 42% DOA (VRD) and 32% VR + 27% DOA + 41% TCR (VRDT). The results demonstrated that the conversions of residue and asphaltene, and hydrogen consumption had a linear relationship with the increment of reaction temperature. The TCR, VRD and VRDT with high content of asphaltene had the characteristic of higher asphaltene conversion and coke yield, but the coke yield was still low, and less than 1.3%. In addition, the removal rate of sulfur was much higher than that of nitrogen, while that of nickel and vanadium reach above 77 and 88%, respectively. The light liquid fraction product could further transform into high value-added chemical materials or clean transport fuel, and the heavy liquid fraction product could utilized as a very good raw material for high quality products as needle coke and carbon-based materials.

Abstract:Residue catalytic hydrogenation was carried out in a two-stage downflow fixed-bed reactor system, with a HDM catalyst in the first stage and HDS catalyst in the second one, to mimic the industrial operation. The experiments were run at five sets of temperatures (395 °C (first reactor)/405 °C (second reactor), 400 °C/410 °C, 405 °C/415 °C, 410 °C/420 °C, and 420 °C/430 °C). It was found that the initial stage deactivation was mainly caused by the rapid deposition of coke. Gradually, the deposition of metal sulfides leads to a slow deactivation in the middle stage of operation. A deactivation model that considers the catalyst activity as a function of TOS was proposed and applied to the hydrotreating reaction. The deactivation parameters of HDCCR, HDS, HDNi, and HDV in the two reactors were obtained by fitting the experimental data at the outlet of the two reactors. According to the deactivation curves of catalysts, it is proposed that the deactivation of HDM catalyst is faster than that of HDS catalyst, and multi-bed hydrogenation can effectively increase the catalyst life.

Abstract:This work reports preliminary results on the fluid dynamic simulation using ANSYS CFD software of a pilot scale reactor experimentally tested for the removal of VOCs (toluene, ethylbenzene, methyl ethyl ketone and xylenes). The reactor is constructed from the modification of a commercial air stripper and has been successfully evaluated for the removal of VOCs using Mn, Ce and Pt based catalysts on ceramic monoliths (bentonite). By means of ANSYS CFD simulation it was possible to represent the flow in the reactor (validating with experimental data) and to simulate the flow in the monolith channels. This information will allow us to have a better understanding of the fluid dynamics in the catalysts and to simulate the reactions with different VOCs by combining ANSYS CFD with ChemKin-PRO.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a study of the conversion of vacuum residue in the presence of finely dispersed regenerated spent aluminum-cobalt-molybdenum hydrotreating catalysts in oxide and sulfide forms, as well as manganese acetylacetonate and cobalt acetylacetonate. The value of the yield of light fractions was chosen as the factor determining the efficiency of the process. The proposed catalyst samples are capable of exhibiting catalytic activity in the direction of intermolecular hydrogen transfer reactions, which presumably can lead to an increase in the yield of light fractions by suppressing the formation of compaction products. The experiments were carried out in an autoclave at an atmospheric pressure of 0.1 MPa, with a contact time of 30 min and temperatures of 440 and 460°C. The yield and composition of hydrocarbon gas were analyzed, the yield of narrow fractions of the process was analyzed, and the physicochemical properties of the resulting narrow fractions were determined, such as density, sulfur content, iodine number, kinematic viscosity of diesel fractions, and cetane index of diesel fractions. Material balances of the processes carried out are presented. A comparative analysis of the influence of the proposed catalyst samples on the results of the vacuum residue cracking process in the presence of a suspended catalyst was performed. The increase in the yield of light fractions relative to thermal processes at corresponding temperatures was calculated for each catalyst sample. The rate constants for the formation of light fractions, normalized to the number of moles of the active component of the catalyst samples, are given. The obtained values were compared, and the operating efficiency of each catalyst sample was analyzed. Conclusions are drawn about the prospects for using the proposed catalyst samples in thermodestructive processes of processing heavy oil residues at oil refineries.

Abstract:Abstract The characterization of heavy petroleum fractions is essential for the design and improvement of cracking plants converting heavy feedstock into valuable “white” products. Conventional simulated distillation methods using packed columns are unsuitable for this purposes, being limited to boiling points up to about 600°C. The method presented is able to cover a boiling points interval ranging from about 150°C up to around 800°C. It employs a short, nonpolar, highly thermostable capillary column routinely operated at temperatures around 430°C. The analytical system is based on a high temperature versions of a fully automatic, capillary dedicated gas chromatograph. The experimental data demonstrate that cold on‐column injection is the sole sampling system suitable for such heavy compounds. The conversion of the retention times into boiling points, based on the use of low molecular weight polyethylenes, is extremely reliable, as demonstrated by the excellent retention time reproducibilities. The lower part (up to 550–600°C TBP) of the boiling point distribution curves of heavy petroleum fractions obtained on capillary columns fits well with the corresponding distribution curves based on packed column data. For the petroleum fractions fully eluted from the column the quantitative results obtained either using internal standards or by direct processing of the elution curves are in excellent agreement (less than 0.3 weight% differences). The method has been applied to the determination of the true boiling points corresponding to short path vacuum distillation (DISTACT) cut points over 300°C.

Abstract:Steam cracking in fluidized beds offers an alternative to conventional steam cracking for sustainable hydrocarbon production. This approach has gained interest, particularly in the context of recycling plastics to generate valuable hydrocarbons. Integrating this process into existing petrochemical clusters necessitates a thorough characterization of the products derived from this new feedstock. This work focuses on addressing the challenges associated with species quantification and characterization time for assessing the product mixture resulting from a steam cracking process. The experiments were conducted in a semi-industrial scale dual fluidized bed steam cracker, utilizing polyethylene as the feedstock. To sample species spanning from C1 to C18, cooling, scrubbing, and adsorption were introduced. These steps were integrated with GC-VUV (Gas Chromatography with Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy) and other widely recognized analytical methods to quantify the sampled species. The primary focus was on GC-VUV analysis as a suitable characterization method for identifying and quantifying C4 to C18 species, which can constitute up to 35% of the product mixture obtained from polyethylene steam cracking (750 °C to 850 °C). Quantifying C6 to C18 hydrocarbons becomes the time-critical step, with GC-VUV potentially achieving this in 1/6th of the analysis time and with relatively optimal quantification compared to the traditional characterization methods.

In this investigation, the experimental distillation of crude oil (RP), low-temperature coal tar (MT), and high-temperature coal tar (HT) were investigated by using the TBPD apparatus, simulated distillation based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and Py (pyrolyzer)-GC/MS, and thermogravimetry with a self-modified crucible (TG-Distillation). GC–MS calibration curves were calibrated using alkane and aromatic external standards. Several parameters for simulated distillation were calibrated, and the dependence of alkane and aromatic components on column temperature was examined. An in-depth analysis and comparison were conducted on TBPD, GC–MS, Py-GC/MS, and TG-Distillation methods. The results show that the difference in TBPD between GC–MS and Py-GC/MS is less than 10 %. Aromatics have a stronger temperature-dependence than alkane components, and the column heating rate of 5 °C/min is better than 10 °C/min. The resolution of oils (especially aromatic-rich coal tar) by GC–MS and Py-GC/MS can be effectively improved by calibrating the components with multiple parameters. TG-Distillation can achieve good distillation and separation effects comparable to that of GC–MS after adjusting the reflux ratio. At the heating rate of 5 °C/min, the TG-Distillation effect is close to the results of TBPD, especially the RP, with a difference of less than 10 %. Adjusting the height of the crucible lid achieves a wider boiling point distribution examination. Additionally, a conversion method was employed to accurately convert TG linearizable data into data from other simulated distillation methods, and predict boiling point distribution up to 400 °C with a prediction deviation of less than 5 % (R 2 > 0.98).

Abstract:Based on long-term accumulated technology and customer demand,a series of high efficiency catalysts for resid hydrotreating were developed and commercialized.The commercial results demonstrated that the new catalysts possessed higher activity and selectivity for HDS,HDM and HDCCR as well as high asphaltene and resin conversion,and high hydrogen content in hydrotreated resid.The activity and stability of new catalysts were much higher than that of reference catalysts.At the same time,due to the decrease of production cost,new catalysts were more competitive in market.
