Abstract:We report an in situ liquid cell scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) study of the heterogeneous deposition of palladium (Pd) on spherical gold (Au) nanoparticles in solution.The dynamic processes observed here revealed different behaviors of Pd deposition on Au nanoparticles.Under irradiation by an energetic electron beam,Pd was reduced and selectively deposited on Au nanoparticles through the island deposition mode.The deposition processes were accompanied with structural relaxation and surface migration of the Pd islands,and the size of the Au-Pd composite particles showed oscillatory growth behavior.In contrast,the Pd coverage on Au increased monotonically.In addition,we also captured the formation of Pd clusters through homogeneous nucleation and growth,and the subsequent coalescence of Pd clusters with islands on the Au-Pd heterostructures.The associated heterogeneous deposition mechanisms were proposed and quantitatively analyzed.The shapes and structures of the Au-Pd composite particles were characterized by highresolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),which revealed the deposited Pd on the Au spherical nanoparticles was polycrystalline and contained several Pd crystallites with random orientations.The results presented here will serve as an important reference to understand heterogeneous growth in liquid solutions.

Abstract:We proposed a highly reproducible method that enables atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations of the dynamics of nanoparticles in liquids. An ultrathin liquid layer was established as a result of formation of bubbles that was initiated and tuned by beam radiation. Abstract:Oxidative etching possesses an enriched flexibility and atomic-level accuracy in tailoring the size, morphology, surface structure, and composition of colloidal nanocrystals toward their catalytic and sensing applications. In this work, we choose one-dimensional penta-twinned Pd nanorods as a model system and apply liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) to investigate the detailed nanoscale etching process under different solution environments, which are DI water/e-beam (weakly oxidative), sodium chloride (NaCl) solution/e-beam (moderately oxidative), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution/e-beam (strongly oxidative), respectively. Increasing the oxidative strength of solution alone accelerates the dissolution kinetics and drives the system from the (near)-equilibrium etching, where nanorods appear in flat and low-indexed ends (for DI water/e-beam) to nonequilibrium etching with slender tips formed as intermediate products (for FeCl3/e-beam). Under a nonequilibrium etching condition, both symmetric and asymmetric etching occurred, that is, the penta-twinned structure either retained (for symmetric etching) or dissolved to a fourfold-, threefold-, and twofold-twinned and single-crystalline structure (for asymmetric etching), depending on the structural defects-induced strain distribution. The formation of slender tips of different structures can be further understood via energetic analysis and strain relaxation. In particular, in situ LCTEM results were successfully reproduced by flask system-based etching experiments; hence, direct correlations were built between LCTEM and conventional colloidal etching reactions. This work comprehends the present understanding on the synergetic roles of structure characteristics and solution chemistry for the etching of multiply twinned nanoparticles toward their precise controlled synthesis and practical applications.

Abstract:The surface oxidation of palladium nanocrystals plays an important role in changing the active sites and subsequently influencing the catalytic reactivity. Such a microscopy study on surface oxidation, down to the atomic scale, is essential for understanding the structure-property correlations of palladium nanocrystal based catalysts. Herein, we present an in situ atomic scale study on the surface oxidation behavior of palladium nanocrystals, which is induced by electron beam irradiation under low oxygen partial pressure and at room temperature inside an environmental transmission electron microscope. We found that: (i) surface oxidation initially started at the edge sites with atomic steps or vertex sites, which served as active sites for oxidation; (ii) the oxidation reaction proceeded with a much faster rate on the {111} surface, indicating a certain crystallography preference; (iii) nanometer-sized palladium monoxide islands were formed on the surfaces eventually. The results from our in situ studies provide insightful knowledge, and will be of certain importance for the design of improved functional catalysts in future.

Abstract:Bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles have received considerable attention for their unique optical, magnetic and catalytic properties. However, these properties will be dramatically modified under ambient conditions by their structure and/or composition change. Thus, it is of primary importance to study the complex transformation pathway of core-shell nanoparticles at an elevated temperature. In this work, by using an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray mapping system, the complete transformation process from a well-designed Pd@Au core-shell nanoparticle to a uniform alloy particle was visualized. It is revealed that this transformation process went through three steps, i.e., surface refacetting, particle resphering and complete alloying. Combining with a developed atomic kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we found that surface energy is the driving force for shape variation, and the different atomic activation barriers of surface diffusion and bulk migration result in the multistep transformation pathway. Our results offered important information for understanding the structure evolution of bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles, which is beneficial for the rational design of nanoparticles with kinetic stability.

Abstract:Deciphering the three-dimensional atomic structure of solid-solid interfaces in core-shell nanomaterials is the key to understand their catalytical, optical and electronic properties. Here, we probe the three-dimensional atomic structures of palladium-platinum core-shell nanoparticles at the single-atom level using atomic resolution electron tomography. We quantify the rich structural variety of core-shell nanoparticles with heteroepitaxy in 3D at atomic resolution. Instead of forming an atomically-sharp boundary, the core-shell interface is found to be atomically diffuse with an average thickness of 4.2 Å, irrespective of the particle's morphology or crystallographic texture. The high concentration of Pd in the diffusive interface is highly related to the free Pd atoms dissolved from the Pd seeds, which is confirmed by atomic images of Pd and Pt single atoms and sub-nanometer clusters using cryogenic electron microscopy. These results advance our understanding of core-shell structures at the fundamental level, providing potential strategies into precise nanomaterial manipulation and chemical property regulation.
Uncovering the Three-Dimensional Structure of Upconverting Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Multislice Electron Ptychography

Abstract:In photon upconverting core-shell nanoparticles, structure strongly dictates performance. Conventional imaging in scanning transmission electron microscopy has sufficient resolution to probe the atomic structure of these nanoparticles, but contrast, dose, and projection limitations make conventional imaging modes insufficient for fully characterizing these structures. Phase retrieval methods provide a promising alternative imaging mode, and in particular, multislice electron ptychography can recover depth-dependent information. Here, we study beam-sensitive photon upconverting core-shell nanoparticles with a multislice ptychography approach using a low electron dose to avoid damage. Large strain fields arise in these heterostructures due to the mismatch in lattice parameter between the core and the shell. We reconstruct both a nanoparticle that appears defect-free and one that has a large break in the side and map the distribution of strain in 3D by computing distortion fields from high-resolution potential images of each slice. In the defect-free nanoparticle, we observe twisting of the shell, while in the broken nanoparticle we measure the 3D position of the crack, the core, and dislocations. These results highlight the advantage of multislice electron ptychography to recover 3D information from a single scan, even under strict electron dose requirements from beam-sensitive samples.

Abstract:Oxidative etching has widely prevailed in the synthesis of a crystal and played a critical role in determining the final growth behavior. In this Letter, we report an in situ microscopic study on the oxidative etching of palladium cubic nanocrystals by liquid cell scanning transmission electron microscopy. The etching was realized with oxidative radiation reactants from electron-water interaction in the presence of Br- ions. Dissolution dynamics of monodispersed and aggregated nanocrystals were both investigated and compared. Analyses on the dissolution kinetics of nanocrystals and the diffusion kinetics of the dissolved agents were carried out based on the scanning transmission electron microscopy characterizations. The results presented here pave a way toward the quantitative understanding of the oxidative etching reaction and its application in the functionally orientated fabrication of nanocrystals with certain sizes, structures, and morphologies.
