Abstract:Temperature fluctuations of an optical resonator underlie a fundamental limit of its cavity stability. Here we show that the fundamental temperature fluctuations of a high-Q microresonator can be suppressed remarkably by pure optical means without cooling the device temperature. An optical wave launched into the cavity is able to produce strong photothermal backaction which dramatically suppresses the spectral intensity of temperature fluctuations and squeezes its overall level by orders of magnitude. The proposed photothermal temperature squeezing is expected to significantly improve the stability of optical resonances, with potentially profound impact on broad applications of high-Q cavities in sensing, metrology, and nonlinear and quantum optics.
Enhancing the Resonance Stability of a High-Q Micro/nanoresonator by an Optical Means

Abstract:High-quality optical resonators underlie many important applications ranging from optical frequency metrology, precision measurement, nonlinear/quantum photonics, to diverse sensing such as detecting single biomolecule, electromagnetic field, mechanical acceleration/rotation, among many others. All these applications rely essentially on the stability of optical resonances, which, however, is ultimately limited by the fundamental thermal fluctuations of the devices. The resulting thermo-refractive and thermo-elastic noises have been widely accepted for nearly two decades as the fundamental thermodynamic limit of an optical resonator, limiting its resonance uncertainty to a magnitude 10(-12) at room temperature.Here we report a novel approach that is able to significantly improve the resonance stability of an optical resonator. We show that, in contrast to the common belief, the fundamental temperature fluctuations of a high-Q micro/nanoresonator can be suppressed remarkably by pure optical means without cooling the device temperature, which we term as temperature squeezing. An optical wave with only a fairly moderate power launched into the device is able to produce strong photothermal backaction that dramatically suppresses the spectral intensity of temperature fluctuations by five orders of magnitudes and squeezes the overall level (root-mean-square value) of temperature fluctuations by two orders of magnitude. The proposed approach is universally applicable to various micro/nanoresonator platforms and the optimal temperature squeezing can be achieved with an optical Q around 10(6)-10(7) that is readily available in various current devices. The proposed photothermal temperature squeezing is expected to have profound impact on broad applications of high-Q cavities in sensing, metrology, and integrated nonlinear/quantum photonics.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here, we review the recent progress in fabrication of high-Q microresonators on glass and crystalline substrates by employing femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate the applications of the fabricated microresonators in generating low-threshold lasers, high-sensitivity chemical sensing and nonlinear optical wavelength conversion.

Abstract:We report on fabrication of microresonators of high quality (high-Q) factors in both glass and crystalline materials by femtosecond laser 3D micromachining. Based on this novel approach, we obtained high-Q microresonators of non-in-plane geometries in glass materials such as fused silica and Nd:glass and demonstrated lasing at a pump power as low as 69 microwatts. We also fabricated on-chip microresonators of sub-100 mu m diameters in crystalline materials including calcium fluoride and lithium niobate, and demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation using the high-Q lithium niobate microresonator. Furthermore, femtosecond laser 3D micromachining allows direct integration of the microresonators with other functional microcomponents, such as a microfluidic mixer and a microheater, leading to compact microdevices with enhanced functionalities. Our technique opens new avenues for fabricating high-Q microresonators with either 2D or 3D geometries on various types of dielectric materials.

Abstract:A novel scheme of low-frequency intensity noise suppression of optical source is provided. A high speed variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on PLZT transparent optic ceramic is employed to instantly compensate the low-frequency power fluctuation of light source. Through constructing a feed-forward and feed-backward control loop system with high-speed optical power monitoring and electric driving, the suppression of low-frequency intensity noise of light source is achieved and the effect caused by the hysteresis of PLZT and the temperature dependent response of VOA can be avoided. Experiment result shows that with 2.1 μs signal delay of the control loop, the fluctuation amplitude can be suppressed down to a level of less than 1% in the frequency range of 0~800 Hz.

Abstract:Extraneous thermal motion can limit displacement sensitivity and radiation pressure effects, such as optical cooling, in a cavity-optomechanical system. Here we present an active noise suppression scheme and its experimental implementation. The main challenge is to selectively sense and suppress extraneous thermal noise without affecting motion of the oscillator. Our solution is to monitor two modes of the optical cavity, each with different sensitivity to the oscillator's motion but similar sensitivity to the extraneous thermal motion. This information is used to imprint "anti-noise" onto the frequency of the incident laser field. In our system, based on a nano-mechanical membrane coupled to a Fabry-Pérot cavity, simulation and experiment demonstrate that extraneous thermal noise can be selectively suppressed and that the associated limit on optical cooling can be reduced.

Abstract:The ability to minimize the thermal conductivity of dielectrics with minimal structural intervention that could affect electrical properties is an important capability for engineering thermoelectric efficiency in low-cost materials such as Si. We recently reported the discovery of special arrangements for nanoscale pores in Si that produce a particularly large reduction in thermal conductivity accompanied by strongly anticorrelated heat current fluctuations, a phenomenon that is missed by the diffuse adiabatic boundary conditions conventionally used in numerical Boltzmann transport models. This manuscript presents the results of molecular dynamics simulations and a Monte Carlo ray tracing model that teases apart this phenomenon to reveal that special pore layouts elastically backscatter long-wavelength heat-carrying phonons. This means that heat carriage by a phonon before scattering is undone by the scattered phonon, resulting in an effective mean-free-path that is significantly shorter than the geometric line-of-sight to the pores. This effect is particularly noticeable for the long-wavelength, long mean-free-path phonons whose transport is impeded drastically more than is expected purely from the usual considerations of scattering defined by the distance between defects. This super-suppression of the mean-free-path below the characteristic length scale of the nanostructuring offers a route for minimizing thermal conductivity with minimal structural impact, while the stronger impact on long wavelengths offers possibilities for the design of band-pass phonon filtering. Moreover, the ray tracing model developed in this paper shows that different forms of correlated scattering imprint a unique signature in the heat current autocorrelation function that could be used as a diagnostic in other nanostructured systems.

Abstract:Thermal noise generally greatly exceeds quantum noise in optomechanical devices unless the mechanical frequency is very high or the thermodynamic temperature is very low. This paper addresses the design concept for a novel optomechanical device capable of ultrahigh quality factors in the audio frequency band with negligible thermal noise. The proposed system consists of a minimally supported millimeter scale pendulum mounted in a double end-mirror sloshing cavity that is topologically equivalent to a membrane-in-the-middle cavity. The radiation pressure inside the high-finesse cavity allows for high optical stiffness, cancellation of terms which lead to unwanted negative damping and suppression of quantum radiation pressure noise. We solve the optical spring dynamics of the system using the Hamiltonian, find the noise spectral density and show that stable optical trapping is possible. We also assess various loss mechanisms, one of the most important being the acceleration loss due to the optical spring. We show that practical devices, starting from a centre-of-mass pendulum frequency of 0.1 Hz, could achieve a maximum quality factor of (1014) with optical spring stiffened frequency 1–10 kHz. Small resonators of mass 1 g or less could achieve a Q-factor of (1011) at a frequency of 100 kHz. Applications for such devices include white light cavities for improvement of gravitational wave detectors, or sensors able to operate near the quantum limit.
Thermal noise cancellation for optomechanically induced nonreciprocity in a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator

Abstract:Magnetic-free optomechanically induced nonreciprocity may stimulate a wide range of practical applications in quantum technologies. However, how to suppress the thermal noise flow from the mechanical reservoir is still a difficulty encountered in achieving optomechanically nonreciprocal effects on a few- and even single-photon level. Here, we show how to realize thermal noise cancellation by quantum interference for optomechanically induced nonreciprocity in a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonator. We find that both nonreciprocal transmission and amplification can be achieved in the WGM microresonator when it coupled to two coupled mechanical resonators. More interestingly, the thermal noise can be suppressed when the two coupled mechanical resonators couple to a common thermal reservoir. The thermal noise cancellation is induced by the destructive quantum interference between the two flow paths of the thermal noises from the common reservoir. The scheme of quantum interference induced thermal noise cancellation can be applied in both sideband resolved and unresolved regimes, even with strong backscattering taken into account. Our work provides an effective way to achieve nonreciprocal effects on a few- or single-photon level without precooling the mechanical mode to the ground state.

Abstract:The thermal nonlinear effects in whispering-gallery-mode resonators are characterized by oscillatory behavior in the transmission spectrum. Although the thermal linewidth broadening is proven to be practical in mode-locking and dynamic control of the optical path, the oscillatory behavior always leads to instability of mode-locking and influences the control accuracy. We theoretically and experimentally illustrate the thermal oscillatory behavior using a model that combines slow and fast thermal relaxation processes of the microsphere and fluctuations of the pump wavelength. We also report dynamic modulation of the refractive index based on the fast thermal relaxation process.

Abstract:To mitigate the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency in microcavities, athermal photonic devices have been developed by incorporating materials with an opposite thermo-optical coefficient (TOC). Here, we conduct an experimental demonstration of the athermal effect in a microbubble resonator, employing an aluminum (Al) holder for its mounting. By converting the thermal expansion of the holder into controlled geometry adjustments in the microbubble resonator, we achieve athermal optical modes at a specific temperature. The athermal compensation is accomplished by counterbalancing the pulling force resulting from the thermal expansion of the Al holder against the thermal characteristics of the material, specifically SiO2. Especially, the optical modes located around the equator are particularly susceptible to the influence of the pulling force exerted by the Al holder. This temperature-insensitive feature of the resonance establishes a new avenue towards athermal microresonator through this special structure.
High-Efficiency Low-Noise Optomechanical Crystal Photon-Phonon Transducers

Abstract:Optomechanical crystals (OMCs) enable coherent interactions between optical photons and microwave acoustic phonons, and represent a platform for implementing quantum transduction between microwave and optical signals. Optical absorption-induced thermal noise at cryogenic (millikelvin) temperatures is one of the primary limitations of performance for OMC-based quantum transducers. Here, we address this challenge with a two-dimensional silicon OMC resonator that is side-coupled to a mechanically detached optical waveguide, realizing a six-fold reduction in the heating rate of the acoustic resonator compared to prior state-of-the-art, while operating in a regime of high optomechanical-backaction and millikelvin base temperature. This reduced heating translates into a demonstrated phonon-to-photon conversion efficiency of 93.1 $\pm$ 0.8% at an added noise of 0.25 $\pm$ 0.01 quanta, representing a significant advance toward quantum-limited microwave-optical frequency conversion and optically-controlled quantum acoustic memories.

Abstract:Suspended optical microresonators are promising devices for on-chip photonic applications such as radio-frequency oscillators, optical frequency combs, and sensors. Scaling up these devices demand the capability to tune the optical resonances in an integrated manner. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate integrated on-chip thermo-optic tuning of suspended microresonators by utilizing suspended wire bridges and microheaters. We demonstrate the ability to tune the resonance of a suspended microresonator in silicon nitride platform by 9.7 GHz using 5.3 mW of heater power. The loaded optical quality factor (QL ~ 92,000) stays constant throughout the detuning. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by completely turning on and off the optical coupling between two evanescently coupled suspended microresonators.

Abstract:Ground state cooling of massive mechanical objects remains a difficult task restricted by the unresolved mechanical sidebands. We propose an optomechanically-induced-transparency cooling scheme to achieve ground state cooling of mechanical motion without the resolved sideband condition in a pure optomechanical system with two mechanical modes coupled to the same optical cavity mode. We show that ground state cooling is achievable for sideband resolution ω m / κ as low as ∼ 0.003. This provides a new route for quantum manipulation of massive macroscopic devices and high-precision measurements.
All-optical thermal control for second-harmonic generation in an integrated microcavity

Abstract:Nonlinear optical effects in integrated microcavities have been studied extensively with the advantages of strong light-matter interaction, great scalability, and stability due to the small mode volume. However, the pump lasers stimulating nonlinear effects impose obstacles for practical applications, since the material absorption causes thermal resonance drift and instability. Here we experimentally demonstrate an all-optical control of the thermal behavior in optical microcavities for tunable doubly-resonant second-harmonic (SH) generation on an integrated photonic chip. Through an auxiliary control laser, the temperature of a selected microring can be efficiently changed, thus allowing precise frequency tuning of the doubly-resonant wavelength while eliminating the distortion of the lineshape induced by the thermo-optic effect. Although the phase-matching conditions will limit the tuning range of 55GHz, the technique is still potential to achieve a larger tuning range in combination with temperature regulation. Additionally, this approach has the advantage of quick reconfiguration, showing a fast modulation rate up to about 256 kHz. The theoretical model behind our experimental scheme is universal and applicable to other microcavity-enhanced nonlinear optical processes, and our work paves the way for controlling and utilizing the thermal effect in the applications of microcavities.
Compensation of Thermal Refraction Effect in High-Q Toroidal Microresonator by Polydimethylsiloxane Coating

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically characterize the thermal refraction effect in a silica microtoroid and demonstrate that such effect can be reduced or even eliminated by applying a thin layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to the surface of the silica resonator. By increasing the coating thickness, the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) experience a transition from redshift to blueshift induced by thermal absorption. Experiment results demonstrate that at the thickness of 0.52 μm, the fundamental WGM with observed Q factor of 1.5×106 shows no shift with the input optical power since the thermal refraction of the silica for this mode is compensated completely by the PDMS layer, which has an opposite thermal refraction effect. This work shows that the PDMS layer could be used to reduce thermal noise in high-Q silica microcavities for applications in sensing, lasing, and nonlinear optics.
Nanoscale imaging of super-high-frequency microelectromechanical resonators with femtometer sensitivity

Abstract:Implementing microelectromechanical system (MEMS) resonators calls for detailed microscopic understanding of the devices, such as energy dissipation channels, spurious modes, and imperfections from microfabrication. Here, we report the nanoscale imaging of a freestanding super-high-frequency (3 – 30 GHz) lateral overtone bulk acoustic resonator with unprecedented spatial resolution and displacement sensitivity. Using transmission-mode microwave impedance microscopy, we have visualized mode profiles of individual overtones and analyzed higher-order transverse spurious modes and anchor loss. The integrated TMIM signals are in good agreement with the stored mechanical energy in the resonator. Quantitative analysis with finite-element modeling shows that the noise floor is equivalent to an in-plane displacement of 10 fm/√Hz at room temperatures, which can be further improved under cryogenic environments. Our work contributes to the design and characterization of MEMS resonators with better performance for telecommunication, sensing, and quantum information science applications.

Abstract:Microcavity lasers have received widespread attention because of their miniaturization and low threshold characteristics. Based on the theoretical analysis of modified semiclassical Langevin equations and the dynamic response of a microcavity Raman laser under constant injection of external feedback light, optical feedback technology is proposed as an effective method for suppressing the relaxation oscillation noise of microcavity lasers. By controlling the optical feedback level, an overall suppression on the laser intensity spectrum around the relaxation oscillation frequency by approximately 24 dB is implemented experimentally. The phase portrait merging feature and the relaxation linewidth narrowing of the microcavity laser is also observed. The theoretical predictions, confirmed by numerical resolutions, are in good agreement with the experimental results. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to study the optical feedback effect in the miniaturized microcavity lasers. The all-optical technique offers a simple and effective method for relaxation oscillation noise reduction in microcavity lasers without active control system. From the applied point of view, since the relaxation oscillation, and consequently the intensity noise of the microcavity laser can be modified by applying the optical feedback, it opens up new perspectives for ultrasensitive detection in a low noise microcavity-based laser system.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics provides a unique platform for controlling micromechanical systems by means of optical fields that crosses the classical-quantum boundary to achieve solid foundations for quantum technologies. Currently, optomechanical resonators have become promising candidates for the development of precisely controlled nano-motors, ultrasensitive sensors and robust quantum information processors. For all these applications, a crucial requirement is to cool the mechanical resonators down to their quantum ground states. In this paper, we present a novel cooling scheme to further cool a micromechanical resonator via the noise squeezing effect. One quadrature in such a resonator can be squeezed to induce enhanced fluctuation in the other, "heated" quadrature, which can then be used to cool the mechanical motion via conventional optomechanical coupling. Our theoretical analysis and numerical calculations demonstrate that this squeeze-and-cool mechanism offers a quick technique for deeply cooling a macroscopic mechanical resonator to an unprecedented temperature region below the zero-point fluctuations.
