Abstract:It is important to further improve the strength properties of chemithermo mechanical pulp (CTMP) for extending its application in more paper grades. In this work, aspen CTMP was pretreated by xylanase, and its strength properties and fiber characteristics were investigated. The treated fibers were analyzed by fiber quality analyzer (FQA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), environment scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that, for xylanase pretreated pulp, the tensile or tear index increased by 13% compared with that of untreated pulp. Meanwhile, the fines content and kink index decreased to some extent after the enzyme treatment. The total carboxyl content, crystallinity index and water retention value of the pulp increased significantly. In addition, the surface lignin of the xylanase-treated fiber decreased significantly and the C-1/C-2 ratio decreased. The xylanase treatment led to the peeling of pulp fibers and higher porosity. The improvement of strength properties can be ascribed to the increase in carboxyl groups and crystallinity, and the decrease in fines content and kink index, as well as to the removal of a portion of xylan and lignin on the fiber surfaces.
